Reversible and non-reactive cellulose separations from ionic liquid mixtures with compressed carbon dioxide.

ABSTRACT: A novel physical (non-reactive) separation of cellulose from an ionic liquid (IL)/cosolvent mixture by compressed carbon dioxide is presented. The precipitation is completely reversible and rapid within small changes of pressure i.e. liquid phase CO2 composition. High pressure phase equilibrium, high pressure NMR, and solid state NMR have been utilized to understand the separation phenomena.

Significant cation effects in carbon dioxide-ionic liquid systems.

Project description:Carbon dioxide-ionic liquid systems are of great current interest, and significant efforts have been made lately to understand the intermolecular interactions in these systems. In general, all the experimental and theoretical studies have concluded so far that the main solute-solvent interaction takes effect through the anion, and the cation has no, or only a secondary role in solvation. In this theoretical approach it is shown that this view is unfounded, and evidence is provided that, similarly to the benzene-CO(2) system, dispersion interactions are present between the solute and the cation. Therefore, this defines a novel site for tailoring solvents to tune CO(2) solubility.

Triphilic Ionic-Liquid Mixtures: Fluorinated and Non-fluorinated Aprotic Ionic-Liquid Mixtures.

Project description:We present here the possibility of forming triphilic mixtures from alkyl- and fluoroalkylimidazolium ionic liquids, thus, macroscopically homogeneous mixtures for which instead of the often observed two domains-polar and nonpolar-three stable microphases are present: polar, lipophilic, and fluorous ones. The fluorinated side chains of the cations indeed self-associate and form domains that are segregated from those of the polar and alkyl domains. To enable miscibility, despite the generally preferred macroscopic separation between fluorous and alkyl moieties, the importance of strong hydrogen bonding is shown. As the long-range structure in the alkyl and fluoroalkyl domains is dependent on the composition of the liquid, we propose that the heterogeneous, triphilic structure can be easily tuned by the molar ratio of the components. We believe that further development may allow the design of switchable, smart liquids that change their properties in a predictable way according to their composition or even their environment.

Reversible electrodeposition and stripping of magnesium from solvate ionic liquid-tetrabutylammonium chloride mixtures.

Project description:The physicochemical properties of three new magnesium-containing solvate ionic liquids are reported. The solvation structures were analysed by Raman spectroscopy, revealing a solvent separated ion pair structure at room temperature. The reversible electrodeposition and stripping of magnesium from mixtures of these solvate ionic liquids and tetra-n-butylammonium chloride is described. The electrolytes are significantly less volatile than similar dilute electrolytes, even at elevated temperatures and the deposition current densities exceed 1 A dm-2 at 80 °C. The influence of the chloride concentration on magnesium deposition was studied with cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry. It was found that the stripping of magnesium is governed by two competing reactions, and the addition of tetrabutylammonium chloride to the solvate ionic liquids was necessary to prevent passivation and efficiently strip the deposited magnesium.

Aryloxy Ionic Liquid-Catalyzed Homogenous Esterification of Cellulose with Low-Reactive Acyl Donors.

Project description:Ionic liquids (ILs) are recyclable, non-volatile, and can dissolve cellulose, a natural polymer that is insoluble in versatile solvents. Therefore, ILs have been used to modify cellulose. However, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EmimOAc), a commercially available IL often used to dissolve and modify cellulose to prepare cellulose-based materials, causes the undesired introduction of an acetyl group derived from the acetate anion of EmimOAc onto the hydroxy group of cellulose during esterification. In this study, for cellulose esterification, we prepared aryloxy ILs as non-carboxylate-type and basic ILs, which can theoretically prevent the undesired introduction of an acyl group from the IL onto the hydroxy group of cellulose. The optimized 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium 2-pyridinolate (Emim2OPy) and mixed solvent system achieved rapid cellulose esterification (within 30 min) with an excellent degree of substitution (DS) value (up to >2.9) derived from the employed low-reactive vinyl esters and bio-based unsaturated aldehydes, without any undesired substituent introduction from side reactions.

Capsules of Reactive Ionic Liquids for Selective Capture of Carbon Dioxide at Low Concentrations.

Project description:The task-specific ionic liquid (IL), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium 2-cyanopyrolide ([EMIM][2-CNpyr]), was encapsulated with polyurea (PU) and graphene oxide (GO) sheets via a one-pot Pickering emulsion, and these capsules were used to scrub CO2 (0-5000 ppm) from moist air. Up to 60 wt % of IL was achieved in the synthesized capsules, and we demonstrated comparable gravimetric CO2 capacities to zeolites and enhanced absorption rates compared to those of bulk IL due to the increased gas/liquid surface-to-volume area. The reactive IL capsules show recyclability upon mild temperature increase compared to zeolites that are the conventional absorber materials for CO2 scrubbing. The measured breakthrough curves in a fixed bed under 100% relative humidity establish the utility of reactive IL capsules as moisture-stable scrubber materials to separate CO2 from air, outperforming zeolites owing to their higher selectivity. It is shown that thermal stability, CO2 absorption capacity, and rate of uptake by IL capsules can be further modulated by incorporating low-viscosity and nonreactive ILs to the capsule core. This study demonstrates an alternative and facile approach for CO2 scrubbing, where separation from gas mixtures with extremely low partial pressures of CO2 is required.

Reduction of Carbon Dioxide to Formate at Low Overpotential Using a Superbase Ionic Liquid.

Project description:A new low-energy pathway is reported for the electrochemical reduction of CO2 to formate and syngas at low overpotentials, utilizing a reactive ionic liquid as the solvent. The superbasic tetraalkyl phosphonium ionic liquid [P66614][124Triz] is able to chemisorb CO2 through equimolar binding of CO2 with the 1,2,4-triazole anion. This chemisorbed CO2 can be reduced at silver electrodes at overpotentials as low as 0.17 V, forming formate. In contrast, physically absorbed CO2 within the same ionic liquid or in ionic liquids where chemisorption is impossible (such as [P66614][NTf2]) undergoes reduction at significantly increased overpotentials, producing only CO as the product.

A physicochemical investigation of ionic liquid mixtures.

Project description:Ionic liquids have earned the reputation of being 'designer solvents' due to the wide range of accessible properties and the degree of fine-tuning afforded by varying the constituent ions. Mixtures of ionic liquids offer the opportunity for further fine-tuning of properties. A broad selection of common ionic liquid cations and anions are employed to create a sample of binary and reciprocal binary ionic liquid mixtures, which are analysed and described in this paper. Physical properties such as the conductivity, viscosity, density and phase behaviour (glass transition temperatures) are examined. In addition, thermal stabilities of the mixtures are evaluated. The physical properties examined for these formulations are found to generally adhere remarkably closely to ideal mixing laws, with a few consistent exceptions, allowing for the facile prediction and control of properties of ionic liquid mixtures.

Anions as Dynamic Probes for Ionic Liquid Mixtures.

Project description:Ionic liquid (IL) mixtures have been proposed as a viable alternative to rationally fine-tune the physicochemical properties of ILs for a variety of applications. The understanding of the effects of mixing ILs on the properties of the mixtures is however only in the very early stages. Two series of ionic liquid mixtures, based on the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium cations, and having a common anion (tetrafluoroborate or bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide), have been prepared and deeply characterized via multiple NMR techniques. Diffusion and relaxation methods combined with 2D ion-ion correlation (nuclear Overhauser enhancement) experiments have been used for a better understanding of the interplay between dynamics and structure of IL mixtures. A crucial role of the anion in driving the mixture's behavior emerged, making them important "dynamic probes" for gaining information of the polar and nonpolar regions of ionic liquids and their mixtures.

Plasmonic photosynthesis of C1-C3 hydrocarbons from carbon dioxide assisted by an ionic liquid.

Project description:Photochemical conversion of CO2 into fuels has promise as a strategy for storage of intermittent solar energy in the form of chemical bonds. However, higher-energy-value hydrocarbons are rarely produced by this strategy, because of kinetic challenges. Here we demonstrate a strategy for green-light-driven synthesis of C1-C3 hydrocarbons from CO2 and H2O. In this approach, plasmonic excitation of Au nanoparticles produces a charge-rich environment at the nanoparticle/solution interface conducive for CO2 activation, while an ionic liquid stabilizes charged intermediates formed at this interface, facilitating multi-step reduction and C-C coupling. Methane, ethylene, acetylene, propane, and propene are photosynthesized with a C2+ selectivity of ~50% under the most optimal conditions. Hydrocarbon turnover exhibits a volcano relationship as a function of the ionic liquid concentration, the kinetic analysis of which coupled with density functional theory simulations provides mechanistic insights into the synergy between plasmonic excitation and the ionic liquid.

Electrophoretic separations in poly(dimethylsiloxane) microchips using mixtures of ionic, nonionic and zwitterionic surfactants.

Project description:The use of surfactant mixtures to affect both EOF and separation selectivity in electrophoresis with PDMS substrates is reported, and capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection is introduced for EOF measurement on PDMS microchips. First, the EOF was measured for two nonionic surfactants (Tween 20 and Triton X-100), mixed ionic/nonionic surfactant systems (SDS/Tween 20 and SDS/Triton X-100), and finally for the first time, mixed zwitterionic/nonionic surfactant systems (TDAPS/Tween 20 and TDAPS/Triton X-100). EOF for the nonionic surfactants decreased with increasing surfactant concentration. The addition of SDS or TDAPS to a nonionic surfactant increased EOF. After establishing the EOF behavior, the separation of model catecholamines was explored to show the impact on separations. Similar analyte resolution with greater peak heights was achieved with mixed surfactant systems containing Tween 20 and TDAPS relative to the single surfactant system. Finally, the detection of catecholamine release from PC12 cells by stimulation with 80 mM K(+) was performed to demonstrate the usefulness of mixed surfactant systems to provide resolution of biological compounds in complex samples.
