ABSTRACT: A study of cyclopropanations of oxy-substituted ethenes with ethyl ?-diazoaroyl acetates is described. Whereas trimethylsilyl vinyl ether and ethyl vinyl ether gave dihydrofuran products, stable cyclopropanes were isolated when vinyl acetate was used. Yields ranged from 0-87%, depending on the nature and position of the aryl ring substituent.

Project description:A palladium-catalyzed intermolecular cascade (4+3) cyclocondensation of salicylaldehydes and vinylcyclopropanes is reported. A key feature of the reaction is the use of a phosphonate group as an acceptor moiety on the cyclopropane, exploiting its propensity to undergo olefination with aldehydes. Subsequent O-allylation enabled the formation of a range of substituted benzoxepinsWith a novel chiral ligand, the products were obtained in generally good yield and with reasonable enantioselectivity.

Ferrocenyl-substituted tetrahydrothiophenes via formal [3 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions of ferrocenyl thioketones with donor-acceptor cyclopropanes.

Project description:Ferrocenyl thioketones reacted with donor-acceptor cyclopropanes in dichloromethane at room temperature in the presence of catalytic amounts of Sc(OTf)3 yielding tetrahydrothiophene derivatives, products of formal [3 + 2]-cycloaddition reactions, in moderate to high yields. In all studied cases, dimethyl 2-arylcyclopropane dicarboxylates reacted with the corresponding aryl ferrocenyl thioketones in a completely diastereoselective manner to form single products in which (C-2)-Ar and (C-5)-ferrocenyl groups were oriented in a cis-fashion. In contrast, the same cyclopropanes underwent reaction with alkyl ferrocenyl thioketones to form nearly equal amounts of both diastereoisomeric tetrahydrothiophenes. A low selectivity was also observed in the reaction of a 2-phthalimide-derived cyclopropane with ferrocenyl phenyl thioketone.

Ring-Opening 1,3-Aminochalcogenation of Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes: A Three-Component Approach.

Project description:A 1,3-aminothiolation was realized by reacting 2-substituted cyclopropane 1,1-dicarboxylates with sulfonamides and N-(arylthio)succinimides. Under Sn(OTf)2 catalysis the transformation proceeded smoothly to the corresponding ring-opened products bearing the sulfonamide in the 1-position next to the donor and the arylthio residue in the 3-position next to the acceptor. The procedure was extended to the corresponding selenium analogues by employing N-(phenylseleno)succinimides as an electrophilic selenium source.

Polarity inversion of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes: disubstituted ?-lactones via enantioselective iridium catalysis.

Project description:The coupling of carbonyl electrophiles at the donor position of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes is described, representing an inversion of polarity with respect to conventional reactivity modes displayed by these reagents. Specifically, upon exposure of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes to alcohols in the presence of a cyclometalated iridium catalyst modified by (S)-BINAP, catalytic C-C coupling occurs, providing enantiomerically enriched products of carbonyl allylation. Identical products are obtained upon isopropanol-mediated transfer hydrogenation of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes in the presence of aldehydes. The reaction products are directly transformed to cis-4,5-disubstituted ?-lactones.

Lewis-Acid-Catalyzed (3+2)-Cycloadditions of Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes with Thioketenes.

Project description:The reactivity of donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes towards thioketenes was investigated. In a (3+2)-cycloaddition using Sc(OTf)3 as a Lewis acidic catalyst, the corresponding exocyclic thioenol ethers (2-methylidene tetrahydrothiophenes) were formed in moderate to good yields. Unsymmetrical thioketenes provided E/Z mixtures at the double bond, with the Z isomer being preferred.

Transition-Metal-Free [3+2] Dehydration Cycloaddition of Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes With 2-Naphthols.

Project description:A Brønsted acid-catalyzed domino ring-opening cyclization transformation of donor-acceptor (D-A) cyclopropanes and 2-naphthols has been developed. This formal [3+2] cyclization reaction provided novel and efficient access to the naphthalene-fused cyclopentanes in the absence of any transition-metal catalysts or additives. This robust procedure was completed smoothly on a gram-scale to afford the corresponding product with comparable efficiency. Furthermore, the synthetic application of the prepared product has been demonstrated by its transformation into a variety of synthetically useful molecules.

Donor-Acceptor Substituted Benzo-, Naphtho- and Phenanthro-Fused Norbornadienes.

Project description:The photochromic norbornadiene/quadricyclane (NBD/QC) couple has found interest as a molecular solar thermal energy (MOST) system for storage of solar energy. To increase the energy difference between the two isomers, we present here the synthesis of a selection of benzo-fused NBD derivatives that contain an aromatic unit, benzene, naphthalene or phenanthrene, fused to one of the NBD double bonds, while the carbon atoms of the other double bond are functionalized with donor and acceptor groups. The synthesis protocols involve functionalization of benzo-fused NBDs with bromo/chloro substituents followed by a subjection of these intermediates to a cyanation reaction (introducing a cyano acceptor group) followed by a Sonogashira coupling (introducing an arylethynyl donor group, -CCC6H4NMe2 or -CCC6H4OMe). While the derivatives have good absorption properties in the visible region (redshifted relative to parent system) in the context of MOST applications, they lack the ability to undergo NBD-to-QC photoisomerization, even in the presence of a photosensitizer. It seems that loss of aromaticity of the fused aromatics is too significant to allow photoisomerization to occur. The concept of destroying aromaticity of a neighboring moiety as a way to enhance the energy density of the NBD/QC couple thus needs further structural modifications, in the quest for optimum MOST systems.
