Multi-Order Investigation of the Nonlinear Susceptibility Tensors of Individual Nanoparticles.

ABSTRACT: We use Hyper Rayleigh Scattering and polarization resolved multiphoton microscopy to investigate simultaneously the second and third-order nonlinear response of Potassium Niobate and Bismuth Ferrite harmonic nanoparticles. We first derive the second-to-third harmonic intensity ratio for colloidal ensembles and estimate the average third-order efficiency of these two materials. Successively, we explore the orientation dependent tensorial response of individual nanoparticles fixed on a substrate. The multi-order polarization resolved emission curves are globally fitted with an analytical model to retrieve individual elements of susceptibility tensors.

Multi-State Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Switches Incorporating One to Three Benzazolo-Oxazolidine Units: A Quantum Chemistry Investigation.

Project description:This contribution employs quantum chemistry methods to describe the variations of the second nonlinear optical responses of molecular switches based on benzazolo-oxazolidine (BOX) units, connected by π-linkers, along their successive opening/closing. Under the fully closed forms, all of them display negligible first hyperpolarizability (β) values. When one BOX is opened, which is sketched as C→O, a push-pull π-conjugated segment is formed, having the potential to enhance β and to set the depolarization ratio (DR) to its one-dimensional-like value (DR = 5). This is observed when only one BOX is open, either for the monoBOX species (C→O) or for the diBOX (CC→CO) and triBOX (CCC→CCO) compounds, i.e., when the remaining BOXs stay closed. The next BOX openings have much different effects. For the diBOXs, the second opening (CO→OO) is associated with a decrease of β, and this decrease is tuned by controlling the conformation of the π-linker, i.e., the centrosymmetry of the whole compound because β vanishes in centrosymmetric compounds. For the triBOXs, the second opening gives rise to a Λ-shape compound, with a negligible change of β, but a decrease of the DR whereas, along the third opening, β remains similar and the DR decreases to the typical value of octupolar systems (DR = 1.5).

Hierarchical model of fibrillar collagen organization for interpreting the second-order susceptibility tensors in biological tissue.

Project description:The second-order nonlinear polarization properties of fibrillar collagen in various rat tissues (vertebrae, tibia, tail tendon, dermis, and cornea) are investigated with polarization-dependent second-harmonic generation (P-SHG) microscopy. Three parameters are extracted: the second-order susceptibility ratio, R = [Formula: see text] ; a measure of the fibril distribution asymmetry, |A|; and the weighted-average fibril orientation, <?>. A hierarchical organizational model of fibrillar collagen is developed to interpret the second-harmonic generation polarization properties. Highlights of the model include: collagen type (e.g., type-I, type-II), fibril internal structure (e.g., straight, constant-tilt), and fibril architecture (e.g., parallel fibers, intertwined, lamellae). Quantifiable differences in internal structure and architecture of the fibrils are observed. Occurrence histograms of R and |A| distinguished parallel from nonparallel fibril distributions. Parallel distributions possessed low parameter values and variability, whereas nonparallel distributions displayed an increase in values and variability. From the P-SHG parameters of vertebrae tissue, a three-dimensional reconstruction of lamellae of intervertebral disk is presented.

Efficient and accurate estimation of relative order tensors from lambda-maps.

Project description:The rapid increase in the availability of RDC data from multiple alignment media in recent years has necessitated the development of more sophisticated analyses that extract the RDC data's full information content. This article presents an analysis of the distribution of RDCs from two media (2D-RDC data), using the information obtained from a lambda-map. This article also introduces an efficient algorithm, which leverages these findings to extract the order tensors for each alignment medium using unassigned RDC data in the absence of any structural information. The results of applying this 2D-RDC analysis method to synthetic and experimental data are reported in this article. The relative order tensor estimates obtained from the 2D-RDC analysis are compared to order tensors obtained from the program REDCAT after using assignment and structural information. The final comparisons indicate that the relative order tensors estimated from the unassigned 2D-RDC method very closely match the results from methods that require assignment and structural information. The presented method is successful even in cases with small datasets. The results of analyzing experimental RDC data for the protein 1P7E are presented to demonstrate the potential of the presented work in accurately estimating the principal order parameters from RDC data that incompletely sample the RDC space. In addition to the new algorithm, a discussion of the uniqueness of the solutions is presented; no more than two clusters of distinct solutions have been shown to satisfy each lambda-map.

Analytical investigation of multi-layered rollable displays considering nonlinear elastic adhesive interfaces.

Project description:To design the multilayered structures of reliable rollable displays, finite element method (FEM) investigations are conducted at various rolling conditions. Given that the optically clear adhesive (OCA) is the only flexible component and interfacial layer that plays an important role in allowing flexibility in rollable displays, we investigated its nonlinear elastic properties in detail. Hereto, FEM of rollable displays have been limited and inaccurate because OCA has been assumed to be a linear elastic material. In addition, despite the fact that rolling deformation exhibits complex bending characteristics, unlike folding, the mechanical behaviors over the entire area of rollable displays at all positions have not yet been addressed. In this study, we describe the dynamic and mechanical characteristics of rollable displays at all positions considering the hyperelastic and viscoelastic properties of OCA. The maximum normal strain of the rollable displays was applied about 0.98%, and the maximum shear strain of the OCA was shown to be around 720%. To assess the stability of the rollable displays, normal and yield strains were compared to each layer and investigated. Consequently, mechanical modeling of the rollable displays was conducted and stable rolling behaviors that did not cause permanent deformation were investigated.

Experimental investigation of rotating nodal line of MEMS-based nonlinear multi-mode resonators.

Project description:Nonlinear phenomenon is presently attracting considerable attention in the field of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). By adjusting a controllable tuning voltage, the nonlinearity of microdevices, especially on microactuators, can be precisely manipulated. To trap and separate small particles, generating a large and stable rotation force is critical in micromanipulations. Here, we report a simple and potential angular momentum cell comprising a piezoelectric MEMS-based nonlinear multi-mode resonator with integrated electrodes. A nonlinear rotating nodal line has been observed in specific frequency bands by applying a controllable low voltage of sub 5 V on a 4-port resonator made of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films. The magnitude of the actuated voltage is Complementary-Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible and easy to integrate with the circuit. Furthermore, the real-time rotation motion of the MEMS-based nonlinear multi-mode resonator is also verified by a laser doppler vibrometer (LDV) at both chirp and single input frequencies, respectively. Therefore, this angular momentum cell shows great potential in the application of micromanipulation.

Higher-Order Linearization and Regularity in Nonlinear Homogenization.

Project description:We prove large-scale C? regularity for solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations with random coefficients, thereby obtaining a version of the statement of Hilbert's 19th problem in the context of homogenization. The analysis proceeds by iteratively improving three statements together: (i) the regularity of the homogenized Lagrangian L¯ , (ii) the commutation of higher-order linearization and homogenization, and (iii) large-scale C0,1 -type regularity for higher-order linearization errors. We consequently obtain a quantitative estimate on the scaling of linearization errors, a Liouville-type theorem describing the polynomially-growing solutions of the system of higher-order linearized equations, and an explicit (heterogenous analogue of the) Taylor series for an arbitrary solution of the nonlinear equations-with the remainder term optimally controlled. These results give a complete generalization to the nonlinear setting of the large-scale regularity theory in homogenization for linear elliptic equations.

Second-order nonlinear optical imaging of chiral crystals.

Project description:Second-order nonlinear optical imaging of chiral crystals (SONICC) is an emerging technique for crystal imaging and characterization. We provide a brief overview of the origin of second harmonic generation signals in SONICC and discuss recent studies using SONICC for biological applications. Given that they provide near-complete suppression of any background, SONICC images can be used to determine the presence or absence of protein crystals through both manual inspection and automated analysis. Because SONICC creates high-resolution images, nucleation and growth kinetics can also be observed. SONICC can detect metastable, homochiral crystalline forms of amino acids crystallizing from racemic solutions, which confirms Ostwald's rule of stages for crystal growth. SONICC's selectivity, based on order, and sensitivity, based on background suppression, make it a promising technique for numerous fields concerned with chiral crystal formation.

Diffusion Tensors of Arbitrary-Shaped Nanoparticles in Fluid by Molecular Dynamics Simulation.

Project description:The anisotropic diffusive behavior of nanoparticles with complex shapes attracts great interest due to its potential applications in many fields ranging from bionics to aeronautic industry. Although molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used widely to investigate nanoparticle diffusion properties, universal methods to describe the diffusion process comprehensively are still lacking. Here, we address this problem by introducing diffusion tensor as it can describe translational and rotational diffusion in three dimensions both individually and their coupling. We take carbon triple sphere suspended in argon fluid as our model system. The consistency of our results and velocity autocorrelation function(VAF) method validates our simulations. The coupling between translational and rotational diffusion is observed directly from analyzing diffusion tensor, and quantified by coupling diffusion coefficient. Our simulation reveals non-trivial effect of some factors in diffusion at nanoscale, which was not considered in previous theories. In addition to introducing an effective method to calculate the diffusion tensor in MD simulations, our work also provides insights for understanding the diffusion process of arbitrary-shaped particles in nanoengineering.

Calculation of Diamagnetic Susceptibility Tensors of Organic Crystals: From Coronene to Pharmaceutical Polymorphs.

Project description:Understanding why crystallization in strong magnetic fields can lead to new polymorphs requires methods to calculate the diamagnetic response of organic molecular crystals. We develop the calculation of the macroscopic diamagnetic susceptibility tensor, ?cryst, for organic molecular crystals using periodic density functional methods. The crystal magnetic susceptibility tensor, ?cryst, for all experimentally known polymorphs, and its molecular counterpart, ?mol, are calculated for flexible pharmaceuticals such as carbamazepine, flufenamic acid, and chalcones, and rigid molecules, such as benzene, pyridine, acridine, anthracene, and coronene, whose molecular magnetic properties have been traditionally studied. A tensor addition method is developed to approximate the crystal diamagnetic susceptibility tensor, ?cryst, from the molecular one, ?mol, giving good agreement with those calculated directly using the more costly periodic density functional method for ?cryst. The response of pharmaceutical molecules and crystals to magnetic fields, as embodied by ?cryst, is largely determined by the packing in the crystal, as well as the molecular conformation. The anisotropy of ?cryst can vary considerably between polymorphs though the isotropic terms are fairly constant. The implications for developing a computational method for predicting whether crystallization in a magnetic field could produce a novel or different polymorph are discussed.

Detecting High-Order Epistasis in Nonlinear Genotype-Phenotype Maps.

Project description:High-order epistasis has been observed in many genotype-phenotype maps. These multi-way interactions between mutations may be useful for dissecting complex traits and could have profound implications for evolution. Alternatively, they could be a statistical artifact. High-order epistasis models assume the effects of mutations should add, when they could in fact multiply or combine in some other nonlinear way. A mismatch in the "scale" of the epistasis model and the scale of the underlying map would lead to spurious epistasis. In this article, we develop an approach to estimate the nonlinear scales of arbitrary genotype-phenotype maps. We can then linearize these maps and extract high-order epistasis. We investigated seven experimental genotype-phenotype maps for which high-order epistasis had been reported previously. We find that five of the seven maps exhibited nonlinear scales. Interestingly, even after accounting for nonlinearity, we found statistically significant high-order epistasis in all seven maps. The contributions of high-order epistasis to the total variation ranged from 2.2 to 31.0%, with an average across maps of 12.7%. Our results provide strong evidence for extensive high-order epistasis, even after nonlinear scale is taken into account. Further, we describe a simple method to estimate and account for nonlinearity in genotype-phenotype maps.
