Voltage assisted asymmetric nanoscale wear on ultra-smooth diamond like carbon thin films at high sliding speeds.

ABSTRACT: The understanding of tribo- and electro-chemical phenomenons on the molecular level at a sliding interface is a field of growing interest. Fundamental chemical and physical insights of sliding surfaces are crucial for understanding wear at an interface, particularly for nano or micro scale devices operating at high sliding speeds. A complete investigation of the electrochemical effects on high sliding speed interfaces requires a precise monitoring of both the associated wear and surface chemical reactions at the interface. Here, we demonstrate that head-disk interface inside a commercial magnetic storage hard disk drive provides a unique system for such studies. The results obtained shows that the voltage assisted electrochemical wear lead to asymmetric wear on either side of sliding interface.

Boosting contact sliding and wear protection via atomic intermixing and tailoring of nanoscale interfaces.

Project description:Friction and wear cause energy wastage and system failure. Usually, thicker overcoats serve to combat such tribological concerns, but in many contact sliding systems, their large thickness hinders active components of the systems, degrades functionality, and constitutes a major barrier for technological developments. While sub-10-nm overcoats are of key interest, traditional overcoats suffer from rapid wear and degradation at this thickness regime. Using an enhanced atomic intermixing approach, we develop a ~7- to 8-nm-thick carbon/silicon nitride (C/SiN x ) multilayer overcoat demonstrating extremely high wear resistance and low friction at all tribological length scales, yielding ~2 to 10 times better macroscale wear durability than previously reported thicker (~20 to 100 nm) overcoats on tape drive heads. We report the discovery of many fundamental parameters that govern contact sliding and reveal how tuning atomic intermixing at interfaces and varying carbon and SiN x thicknesses strongly affect friction and wear, which are crucial for advancing numerous technologies.

Designable ultra-smooth ultra-thin solid-electrolyte interphases of three alkali metal anodes.

Project description:Dendrite growth of alkali metal anodes limited their lifetime for charge/discharge cycling. Here, we report near-perfect anodes of lithium, sodium, and potassium metals achieved by electrochemical polishing, which removes microscopic defects and creates ultra-smooth ultra-thin solid-electrolyte interphase layers at metal surfaces for providing a homogeneous environment. Precise characterizations by AFM force probing with corroborative in-depth XPS profile analysis reveal that the ultra-smooth ultra-thin solid-electrolyte interphase can be designed to have alternating inorganic-rich and organic-rich/mixed multi-layered structure, which offers mechanical property of coupled rigidity and elasticity. The polished metal anodes exhibit significantly enhanced cycling stability, specifically the lithium anodes can cycle for over 200 times at a real current density of 2 mA cm-2 with 100% depth of discharge. Our work illustrates that an ultra-smooth ultra-thin solid-electrolyte interphase may be robust enough to suppress dendrite growth and thus serve as an initial layer for further improved protection of alkali metal anodes.

Ultra-smooth glassy graphene thin films for flexible transparent circuits.

Project description:Large-area graphene thin films are prized in flexible and transparent devices. We report on a type of glassy graphene that is in an intermediate state between glassy carbon and graphene and that has high crystallinity but curly lattice planes. A polymer-assisted approach is introduced to grow an ultra-smooth (roughness, <0.7 nm) glassy graphene thin film at the inch scale. Owing to the advantages inherited by the glassy graphene thin film from graphene and glassy carbon, the glassy graphene thin film exhibits conductivity, transparency, and flexibility comparable to those of graphene, as well as glassy carbon-like mechanical and chemical stability. Moreover, glassy graphene-based circuits are fabricated using a laser direct writing approach. The circuits are transferred to flexible substrates and are shown to perform reliably. The glassy graphene thin film should stimulate the application of flexible transparent conductive materials in integrated circuits.

Achieving Diamond-Like Wear in Ta-Rich Metallic Glasses.

Project description:Most metals and alloys suffer from high friction and wear due to their low hardness and lack of self-lubrication. Although plenty of strategies have been proposed, it is still a long-standing challenge to achieve diamond-like wear in metals. Metallic glasses (MGs) are supposed to possess low coefficient of friction (COF) because of their high hardness and fast surface mobility. However, their wear rate is larger than that of diamond-like materials. Here, this work reports the discovery of Ta-rich MGs that exhibit diamond-like wear. This work develops an indentation approach for high-throughput characterization of crack resistance. By employing deep indentation loading, this work is able to efficiently identify the alloys that exhibit better plasticity and crack resistance according to the differences of indent morphology. With high temperature stability, high hardness, improved plasticity, and crack resistance, the discovered Ta-based MGs exhibit diamond-like tribological properties, featured by COF as low as ≈0.05 for diamond ball test and ≈0.15 for steel ball test, and specific wear rate of only ≈10-7 mm3 N- 1 m-1 . The discovery approach and the discovered MGs exemplifie the promise to substantially reduce friction and wear of metals and may unleash the potential of MGs in tribological applications.

Ultra-thin and smooth transparent electrode for flexible and leakage-free organic light-emitting diodes.

Project description:A smooth, ultra-flexible, and transparent electrode was developed from silver nanowires (AgNWs) embedded in a colorless polyimide (cPI) by utilizing an inverted film-processing method. The resulting AgNW-cPI composite electrode had a transparency of >80%, a low sheet resistance of 8 ?/?, and ultra-smooth surfaces comparable to glass. Leveraging the robust mechanical properties and flexibility of cPI, the thickness of the composite film was reduced to less than 10??m, which is conducive to extreme flexibility. This film exhibited mechanical durability, for both outward and inward bending tests, up to a bending radius of 30??m, while maintaining its electrical performance under cyclic bending (bending radius: 500??m) for 100,000 iterations. Phosphorescent, blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated using these composites as bottom electrodes (anodes). Hole-injection was poor, because AgNWs were largely buried beneath the composite's surface. Thus, we used a simple plasma treatment to remove the thin cPI layer overlaying the nanowires without introducing other conductive materials. As a result, we were able to finely control the flexible OLEDs' electroluminescent properties using the enlarged conductive pathways. The fabricated flexible devices showed only slight performance reductions of <3% even after repeated foldings with a 30??m bending radius.

New Insight for Surface Chemistries in Ultra-thin Self-assembled Monolayers Modified High-voltage Spinel Cathodes.

Project description:The electrochemical properties of the interface between the spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4-δ (LNMO4-δ) cathodes and ethylene carbonate-dimethyl carbonate (EC-DMC) electrolyte containing 1 M of LiPF6 have been investigated to achieve high-voltage durability of LNMO4-δ/graphite full cells. Coating the LNMO4-δ crystal surface by a fluoroalkylsilane self-assembled monolayer with a thickness below 2 nm resulted in a capacity retention of 94% after 100 cycles at a rate of 1 C and suppression of capacity fading for both the cathode and anode of the full cell. The observed effect is likely caused by the inhibited oxidative decomposition of EC-DMC electrolyte and vinylene carbonate (VC) species at the LNMO4-δ crystal surface and formation of a stable VC solid electrolyte interface near the anode. Moreover, the results obtained via photoelectron spectroscopy and density-functional calculations revealed that the increase in the work function of the LNMO4-δ crystal surface due to the formation of Si-O-Mn species primary contributed to the inhibition of the oxidative decomposition of the electrolyte and VC molecules at the cathode/electrolyte interface.

Mesoscopic physical removal of material using sliding nano-diamond contacts.

Project description:Wear mechanisms including fracture and plastic deformation at the nanoscale are central to understand sliding contacts. Recently, the combination of tip-induced material erosion with the sensing capability of secondary imaging modes of AFM, has enabled a slice-and-view tomographic technique named AFM tomography or Scalpel SPM. However, the elusive laws governing nanoscale wear and the large quantity of atoms involved in the tip-sample contact, require a dedicated mesoscale description to understand and model the tip-induced material removal. Here, we study nanosized sliding contacts made of diamond in the regime whereby thousands of nm3 are removed. We explore the fundamentals of high-pressure tip-induced material removal for various materials. Changes in the load force are systematically combined with AFM and SEM to increase the understanding and the process controllability. The nonlinear variation of the removal rate with the load force is interpreted as a combination of two contact regimes each dominating in a particular force range. By using the gradual transition between the two regimes, (1) the experimental rate of material eroded on each tip passage is modeled, (2) a controllable removal rate below 5 nm/scan for all the materials is demonstrated, thus opening to future development of 3D tomographic AFM.

Fabrication of ultra-thin nanostructured bimetallic foils by Accumulative Roll Bonding and Asymmetric Rolling.

Project description:This paper reports a new technique that combines the features of Accumulative Roll Bonding (ARB) and Asymmetric Rolling (AR). This technique has been developed to enable production of ultra-thin bimetallic foils. Initially, 1.5 mm thick AA1050 and AA6061 foils were roll-bonded using ARB at 200°C, with 50% reduction. The resulting 1.5 mm bimetallic foil was subsequently thinned to 0.04 mm through four AR passes at room temperature. The speed ratio between the upper and lower AR rolls was 1:1.3. The tensile strength of the bimetallic foil was seen to increase with reduction in thickness. The ductility of the foil was seen to reduce upon decreasing the foil thickness from 1.5 mm to 0.14 mm, but increase upon further reduction in thickness from 0.14 mm to 0.04 mm. The grain size was about 140 nm for the AA6061 layer and 235 nm for the AA1050 layer, after the third AR pass.

Fabrication of Ultra-Thin Printed Organic TFT CMOS Logic Circuits Optimized for Low-Voltage Wearable Sensor Applications.

Project description:Ultrathin electronic circuits that can be manufactured by using conventional printing technologies are key elements necessary to realize wearable health sensors and next-generation flexible electronic devices. Due to their low level of power consumption, complementary (CMOS) circuits using both types of semiconductors can be easily employed in wireless devices. Here, we describe ultrathin CMOS logic circuits, for which not only the source/drain electrodes but also the semiconductor layers were printed. Both p-type and n-type organic thin film transistor devices were employed in a D-flip flop circuit in the newly developed stacked structure and exhibited excellent electrical characteristics, including good carrier mobilities of 0.34 and 0.21?cm(2) V(-1) sec(-1), and threshold voltages of nearly 0?V with low operating voltages. These printed organic CMOS D-flip flop circuits exhibit operating frequencies of 75?Hz and demonstrate great potential for flexible and printed electronics technology, particularly for wearable sensor applications with wireless connectivity.

The Wear Behavior of Textured Steel Sliding against Polymers.

Project description:Artificially fabricated surface textures can significantly improve the friction and wear resistance of a tribological contact. Recently, this surface texturing technique has been applied to polymer materials to improve their tribological performance. However, the wear behavior of textured tribo-pairs made of steel and polymer materials has been less thoroughly investigated and is not well understood; thus, it needs further research. The aim of this study is to investigate the wear properties of tribological contacts made of textured stainless steel against polymer surfaces. Three polymer materials were selected in this study, namely, ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), polyoxymethylene (POM) and (polyetheretherketone) PEEK. Wear tests were operated through a ring-on-plane mode. The results revealed that the texture features and material properties affected the wear rates and friction coefficients of the textured tribo-pairs. In general, PEEK/textured steel achieved the lowest wear rate among the three types of tribo-pairs investigated. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis revealed that the elements of C and O on the contacting counterfaces varied with texture features and indicated different wear behavior. Experimental and simulated results showed differences in the stress distribution around the dimple edge, which may influence wear performance. Wear debris with different surface morphologies were found for tribo-pairs with varying texture features. This study has increased the understanding of the wear behavior of tribo-pairs between textured stainless steel and polymer materials.
