Project description:This data paper presents the values of CO2 solubility at different temperatures and main compositional parameters (protein, fat, moisture, sugars and salt content) for food products from different categories: dairy products, fishes and meats. It is the result of an extensive meta-analysis gathering the results of different major papers published on the domain on the period of 1980 to 2021, presenting the composition of 81 different food products corresponding to 362 solubility measures. For each food product, the compositional parameters were either extracted directly from the original source, or extracted from open-source databases. This dataset has also been enriched with measurements made on pure water and oil for comparison purposes. In order to ease the comparison between different sources, data have been semantized and structured by an ontology enriched with domain vocabulary. They are stored in a public repository and can be retrieved through the @Web tool, a user-friendly interface allowing to capitalize and query the data.

Project description:Context.—The laboratory total testing process includes preanalytic, analytic, and postanalytic phases, but most laboratory quality improvement efforts address the analytic phase. Expanding quality improvement to preanalytic and postanalytic phases via use of medical data warehouses, repositories that include clinical, utilization, and administrative data, can improve patient care by ensuring appropriate test utilization. Cross-department, multidisciplinary collaboration to address gaps and improve patient and system outcomes is beneficial.Objective.—To demonstrate medical data warehouse utility for characterizing laboratory-associated quality gaps amenable to preanalytic or postanalytic interventions.Design.—A multidisciplinary team identified quality gaps. Medical data warehouse data were queried to characterize gaps. Organizational leaders were interviewed about quality improvement priorities. A decision aid with elements including national guidelines, local and national importance, and measurable outcomes was completed for each gap.Results.—Gaps identified included (1) test ordering; (2) diagnosis, detection, and documentation, and (3) high-risk medication monitoring. After examination of medical data warehouse data including enrollment, diagnoses, laboratory, pharmacy, and procedures for baseline performance, high-risk medication monitoring was selected, specifically alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, complete blood count, and creatinine testing among patients receiving disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. The test utilization gap was in monitoring timeliness (eg, >60% of patients had a monitoring gap exceeding the guideline recommended frequency). Other contributors to selecting this gap were organizational enthusiasm, regulatory labeling, and feasibility of a significant laboratory role in addressing the gap.Conclusions.—A multidisciplinary process facilitated identification and selection of a laboratory medicine quality gap. Medical data warehouse data were instrumental in characterizing gaps.

Project description:First principles calculations have been performed to comparatively reveal hydrogen solubility and diffusivity at grain boundaries of BCC and FCC PdCu phases. It is found that the temperature-dependent hydrogen solubility at BCC Σ3 (112) GB of PdCu seems much higher than that in BCC PdCu bulk, while hydrogen solubility in FCC Σ3 (111) GB of PdCu is much lower than that in its corresponding FCC bulk. Calculations also reveal that grain boundary has an important effect on hydrogen diffusion of BCC and FCC PdCu, i.e., hydrogen diffusivities of BCC Σ3 (112) and FCC Σ3 (111) grain boundaries of PdCu seem much smaller and bigger than those of its corresponding bulks, respectively. The predicted results could deepen the comprehension of hydrogen solubility and diffusion of PdCu phases.

Project description:Carbon fixation has a central role in determining cellular redox poise, increasingly understood to be a key parameter in cyanobacterial physiology. In the cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus-the most abundant phototroph in the oligotrophic oceans-the carbon-concentrating mechanism is reduced to the bare essentials. Given the ability of Prochlorococcus populations to grow under a wide range of oxygen concentrations in the ocean, we wondered how carbon and oxygen physiology intersect in this minimal phototroph. Thus, we examined how CO2:O2 gas balance influenced growth and chlorophyll fluorescence in Prochlorococcus strain MED4. Under O2 limitation, per-cell chlorophyll fluorescence fell at all CO2 levels, but still permitted substantial growth at moderate and high CO2. Under CO2 limitation, we observed little growth at any O2 level, although per-cell chlorophyll fluorescence fell less sharply when O2 was available. We explored this pattern further by monitoring genome-wide transcription in cells shocked with acute limitation of CO2, O2 or both. O2 limitation produced much smaller transcriptional changes than the broad suppression seen under CO2 limitation and CO2/O2 co-limitation. Strikingly, both CO2 limitation conditions initially evoked a transcriptional response that resembled the pattern previously seen in high-light stress, but at later timepoints we observed O2-dependent recovery of photosynthesis-related transcripts. These results suggest that oxygen has a protective role in Prochlorococcus when carbon fixation is not a sufficient sink for light energy.

Project description:In this work an array of chemical sensors for gas detection has been developed, starting with a commercial sensor platform developed by Microchip (GestIC), which is normally used to detect, trace, and classify hand movements in space. The system is based on electric field changes, and in this work, it has been used as mechanism revealing the adsorption of chemical species CO2 and O2. The system is composed of five electrodes, and their responses were obtained by interfacing the sensors with an acquisition board based on an ATMEGA 328 microprocessor (Atmel MEGA AVR microcontroller). A dedicated measurement chamber was designed and prototyped in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) using an Ultimaker3 3D printer. The measurement cell size is 120 × 85 mm. Anthocyanins (red rose) were used as a sensing material in order to functionalize the sensor surface. The sensor was calibrated using different concentrations of oxygen and carbon dioxide, ranging from 5% to 25%, mixed with water vapor in the range from 50% to 90%. The sensor exhibits good repeatability for CO2 concentrations. To better understand the sensor response characteristics, sensitivity and resolution were calculated from the response curves at different working points. The sensitivity is in the order of magnitude of tens to hundreds of µV/% for CO2, and of µV/% in the case of O2. The resolution is in the range of 10-1%-10-3% for CO2, and it is around 10-1% for O2. The system could be specialized for different fields, for environmental, medical, and food applications.

Project description:MitoMiner (http://mitominer.mrc-mbu.cam.ac.uk/) is a data warehouse for the storage and analysis of mitochondrial proteomics data gathered from publications of mass spectrometry and green fluorescent protein tagging studies. In MitoMiner, these data are integrated with data from UniProt, Gene Ontology, Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man, HomoloGene, Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes and PubMed. The latest release of MitoMiner stores proteomics data sets from 46 studies covering 11 different species from eumetazoa, viridiplantae, fungi and protista. MitoMiner is implemented by using the open source InterMine data warehouse system, which provides a user interface allowing users to upload data for analysis, personal accounts to store queries and results and enables queries of any data in the data model. MitoMiner also provides lists of proteins for use in analyses, including the new MitoMiner mitochondrial proteome reference sets that specify proteins with substantial experimental evidence for mitochondrial localization. As further mitochondrial proteomics data sets from normal and diseased tissue are published, MitoMiner can be used to characterize the variability of the mitochondrial proteome between tissues and investigate how changes in the proteome may contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction and mitochondrial-associated diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, obesity, diabetes, heart failure and the ageing process.

Project description:Diffusivity and solubility of cyclohexane in nanoscale bitumen films coated on hydrophilic substrates at ambient conditions were studied using a gravimetric analyzer. Three substrates were used, and they are as follows: sample A, monodisperse spherical glass beads; sample B, polydisperse spherical glass beads mixed with polydisperse irregular-shape kaolin clay particles; and sample C, irregular-shape residual solids generated from a solvent extraction process of an oil sand ore. All of the above samples had a mean diameter of 150 μm. Diffusion coefficients were determined based upon the initial rates of cyclohexane absorption when bitumen-coated samples at various amounts (thicknesses) were exposed to a carrier gas with cyclohexane vapors at two levels of relative saturations (RSs), and they were found to be in the range of 10-18 to 10-16 m2/s. A double-first-order kinetics model fits well to the absorption data, suggesting that there exists a concentration gradient of polar (or nonpolar) bitumen molecules in the nanoscale films. This is because the hydrophilic substrates attract the relatively polar fraction of bitumen molecules to the region close to the substrates and the nonpolar fraction resides in the region near the free surface. As a result, the measured diffusion coefficients exhibited positive thickness dependence when the thickness of the bitumen films was at the nanoscale. The molecules near the substrates tended to diffuse slower than those in the free surface region. However, diffusivity was insensitive to the cyclohexane RS. On the other hand, the measured solubility of cyclohexane in the nanoscale bitumen films exhibited no thickness dependence but strong cyclohexane RS dependence. These results suggest that solubility is not affected by the inhomogeneous distribution of bitumen molecules in the nanoscale films and that it follows more or less Henry's law.

Project description:BackgroundResearch addressing value in healthcare requires a measure of cost. While there are many sources and types of cost data, each has strengths and weaknesses. Many researchers appear to create study-specific cost datasets, but the explanations of their costing methodologies are not always clear, causing their results to be difficult to interpret. Our solution, described in this paper, was to use widely accepted costing methodologies to create a service-level, standardized healthcare cost data warehouse from an institutional perspective that includes all professional and hospital-billed services for our patients.MethodsThe warehouse is based on a National Institutes of Research-funded research infrastructure containing the linked health records and medical care administrative data of two healthcare providers and their affiliated hospitals. Since all patients are identified in the data warehouse, their costs can be linked to other systems and databases, such as electronic health records, tumor registries, and disease or treatment registries.ResultsWe describe the two institutions' administrative source data; the reference files, which include Medicare fee schedules and cost reports; the process of creating standardized costs; and the warehouse structure. The costing algorithm can create inflation-adjusted standardized costs at the service line level for defined study cohorts on request.ConclusionThe resulting standardized costs contained in the data warehouse can be used to create detailed, bottom-up analyses of professional and facility costs of procedures, medical conditions, and patient care cycles without revealing business-sensitive information. After its creation, a standardized cost data warehouse is relatively easy to maintain and can be expanded to include data from other providers. Individual investigators who may not have sufficient knowledge about administrative data do not have to try to create their own standardized costs on a project-by-project basis because our data warehouse generates standardized costs for defined cohorts upon request.
