Project description:We present a decentralised solution for managing scientific communication, based on distributed ledger technologies, also called blockchains. The proposed system aims to solve incentive problems displayed by traditional systems in scientific communication and publication. A minimal working model is presented, defining roles, processes, and expected results from the novel system. The proposed solution is viable, given the current status of blockchain technology, and should lead to a rethinking of current practices and their consequences for scientific communication.

Project description:Trust in science increases when scientists and the outlets certifying their work honor science's norms. Scientists often fail to signal to other scientists and, perhaps more importantly, the public that these norms are being upheld. They could do so as they generate, certify, and react to each other's findings: for example, by promoting the use and value of evidence, transparent reporting, self-correction, replication, a culture of critique, and controls for bias. A number of approaches for authors and journals would lead to more effective signals of trustworthiness at the article level. These include article badging, checklists, a more extensive withdrawal ontology, identity verification, better forward linking, and greater transparency.

Project description:Clinical trial consent for protocols and their revisions should be transparent for patients and traceable for stakeholders. Our goal is to implement a process allowing for collection of patients' informed consent, which is bound to protocol revisions, storing and tracking the consent in a secure, unfalsifiable and publicly verifiable way, and enabling the sharing of this information in real time. For that, we build a consent workflow using a trending technology called Blockchain. This is a distributed technology that brings a built-in layer of transparency and traceability. From a more general and prospective point of view, we believe Blockchain technology brings a paradigmatical shift to the entire clinical research field. We designed a Proof-of-Concept protocol consisting of time-stamping each step of the patient's consent collection using Blockchain, thus archiving and historicising the consent through cryptographic validation in a securely unfalsifiable and transparent way. For each protocol revision, consent was sought again. We obtained a single document, in an open format, that accounted for the whole consent collection process: a time-stamped consent status regarding each version of the protocol. This document cannot be corrupted and can be checked on any dedicated public website. It should be considered a robust proof of data. However, in a live clinical trial, the authentication system should be strengthened to remove the need for third parties, here trial stakeholders, and give participative control to the peer users. In the future, the complex data flow of a clinical trial could be tracked by using Blockchain, which core functionality, named Smart Contract, could help prevent clinical trial events not occurring in the correct chronological order, for example including patients before they consented or analysing case report form data before freezing the database. Globally, Blockchain could help with reliability, security, transparency and could be a consistent step toward reproducibility.

Project description:The science on controversial topics is often heatedly discussed on social media, a potential problem for social-media-based science communicators. Therefore, two exploratory studies were performed to investigate the effects of science-critical user comments attacking Facebook posts containing scientific claims. The claims were about one of four controversial topics (homeopathy, genetically modified organisms, refugee crime, and childhood vaccinations). The user comments attacked the claims based on the thematic complexity, the employed research methods, the expertise, or the motivations of the researchers. The results reveal that prior attitudes determine judgments about the user comments, the attacked claims, and the source of the claim. After controlling for attitude, people agree most with thematic complexity comments, but the comments differ in their effect on perceived claim credibility only when the comments are made by experts. In addition, comments attacking researchers' motivations were more effective in lowering perceived integrity while scientists' perceived expertise remained unaffected.

Project description:Nowadays, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are widely used for collecting, communicating, and sharing information in various applications. Due to its limited resources in terms of computation, power, battery lifetime, and memory storage for sensor nodes, it is difficult to add confidentiality and integrity security features. It is worth noting that blockchain (BC) technology is one of the most promising technologies, because it provides security, avoids centralization, and a trusted third party. However, to apply BCs in WSNs is not an easy task because BC is typically resource-hungry for energy, computation, and memory. In this paper, the additional complication of adding BC in WSNs is compensated by an energy minimization strategy, which basically depends on minimizing the processing load of generating the blockchain hash value, and encrypting and compressing the data that travel from the cluster-heads to the base station to reduce the overall traffic, leading to reduced energy per node. A specific (dedicated) circuit is designed to implement the compression technique, generate the blockchain hash values and data encryption. The compression algorithm is based on chaotic theory. A comparison of the power consumed by a WSN using a blockchain implementation with and without the dedicated circuit, illustrates that the hardware design contributes considerably to reduce the consumption of power. When simulating both approaches, the energy consumed when replacing functions by hardware decreases up to 63%.

Project description:BackgroundIntegrating pervasive computing with blockchain's ability to store privacy-protected mobile health (mHealth) data while providing Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance is a challenge. Patients use a multitude of devices, apps, and services to collect and store mHealth data. We present the design of an internet of things (IoT)-based configurable blockchain with different mHealth apps on iOS and Android, which collect the same user's data. We discuss the advantages of using such a blockchain architecture and demonstrate 2 things: the ease with which users can retain full control of their pervasive mHealth data and the ease with which HIPAA compliance can be accomplished by providers who choose to access user data.ObjectiveThe purpose of this paper is to design, evaluate, and test IoT-based mHealth data using wearable devices and an efficient, configurable blockchain, which has been designed and implemented from the first principles to store such data. The purpose of this paper is also to demonstrate the privacy-preserving and HIPAA-compliant nature of pervasive computing-based personalized health care systems that provide users with total control of their own data.MethodsThis paper followed the methodical design science approach adapted in information systems, wherein we evaluated prior designs, proposed enhancements with a blockchain design pattern published by the same authors, and used the design to support IoT transactions. We prototyped both the blockchain and IoT-based mHealth apps in different devices and tested all use cases that formed the design goals for such a system. Specifically, we validated the design goals for our system using the HIPAA checklist for businesses and proved the compliance of our architecture for mHealth data on pervasive computing devices.ResultsBlockchain-based personalized health care systems provide several advantages over traditional systems. They provide and support extreme privacy protection, provide the ability to share personalized data and delete data upon request, and support the ability to analyze such data.ConclusionsWe conclude that blockchains, specifically the consensus, hasher, storer, miner architecture presented in this paper, with configurable modules and software as a service model, provide many advantages for patients using pervasive devices that store mHealth data on the blockchain. Among them is the ability to store, retrieve, and modify ones generated health care data with a single private key across devices. These data are transparent, stored perennially, and provide patients with privacy and pseudoanonymity, in addition to very strong encryption for data access. Firms and device manufacturers would benefit from such an approach wherein they relinquish user data control while giving users the ability to select and offer their own mHealth data on data marketplaces. We show that such an architecture complies with the stringent requirements of HIPAA for patient data access.

Project description:Trust is an important component of the doctor-patient relationship and is associated with improved patient satisfaction and health outcomes. Previously, we reported that patient feelings of trust and similarity toward their clinician predicted reductions in evoked pain in response to painful heat stimulations. In the present study, we investigated the brain mechanisms underlying this effect. We used face stimuli previously developed using a data-driven computational modeling approach that differ in perceived trustworthiness and superimposed them on bodies dressed in doctors' attire. During functional magnetic resonance imaging, participants (n = 42) underwent a series of virtual medical interactions with these doctors during which they received painful heat stimulation as an analogue of a painful diagnostic procedure. Participants reported increased pain when receiving painful heat stimulations from low-trust doctors, which was accompanied by increased activity in pain-related brain regions and a multivariate pain-predictive neuromarker. Findings suggest that patient trust in their doctor may have tangible impacts on pain and point to a potential brain basis for trust-related reductions in pain through the modulation of brain circuitry associated with the sensory-discriminative and affective-motivational dimensions of pain.

Project description:In Ethereum, miners are responsible for expanding the blockchain ledger by appending new blocks of transactions in exchange for incentives. Within the current Ethereum incentive mechanism, miners can still receive a significant amount of reward when creating non-full or even empty blocks, despite their negative impact on the system performance. We provide an extensive data-driven analysis of the impact of non-full blocks on the system performance, with the help of the BlockSim simulation tool. We collect the data for 500,000 Ethereum blocks and fit the appropriate probability distributions to the data to provide input suitable for the simulator. We show that the performance of Ethereum can be improved by over 50% if all blocks were filled with transactions. We propose an adjustment to the current Ethereum incentive model to assure the received incentive is always proportional to the block utilization level. Using our proposed approach, the incentive for non-full blocks is significantly reduced, making this behavior less attractive for miners. This implies that miners would be enforced to fill their blocks with transactions, and thus the performance is pushed to its optimal level. We show that our approach can work in practice without any crucial security issues.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Data security issues still constitute the main reason for the sluggish dissemination of electronic health records (EHRs). Given that blockchain technology offers the possibility to verify transactions through a decentralized network, it may serve as a solution to secure health-related data. Therefore, we have identified stakeholder-specific requirements and propose a blockchain-based architecture for EHRs, while referring to the already existing scientific discussions on the potential of blockchain for use in EHRs. OBJECTIVE:This study aimed to introduce blockchain technology for EHRs, based on identifying stakeholders and systematically eliciting their requirements, and to discuss the key benefits (KBs) and key challenges (KCs) of blockchain technology in the context of EHRs. METHODS:The blockchain-based architecture was developed in the framework of the design science research paradigm. The requirements were identified using a structured literature review and interviews with nine health care experts. Subsequently, the proposed architecture was evaluated using 4 workshops with 15 participants. RESULTS:We identified three major EHR stakeholder groups and 34 respective requirements. On this basis, we developed a five-layer architecture. The subsequent evaluation of the artifact was followed by the discussion of 12 KBs and 12 KCs of a blockchain-based architecture for EHRs. To address the KCs, we derived five recommendations for action for science and practice. CONCLUSIONS:Our findings indicate that blockchain technology offers considerable potential to advance EHRs. Improvements to currently available EHR solutions are expected, for instance, in the areas of data security, traceability, and automation by smart contracts. Future research could examine the patient's acceptance of blockchain-based EHRs and cost-benefit analyses.

Project description:Medical healthcare centers are envisioned as a promising paradigm to handle the massive volume of data for COVID-19 patients using artificial intelligence (AI). Traditionally, AI techniques require centralized data collection and training models within a single organization. This practice can be considered a weakness as it leads to several privacy and security concerns related to raw data communication. To overcome this weakness and secure raw data communication, we propose a blockchain-based federated learning framework that provides a solution for collaborative data training. The proposed framework enables the coordination of multiple hospitals to train and share encrypted federated models while preserving data privacy. Blockchain ledger technology provides decentralization of federated learning models without relying on a central server. Moreover, the proposed homomorphic encryption scheme encrypts and decrypts the gradients of the model to preserve privacy. More precisely, the proposed framework: (i) train the local model by a novel capsule network for segmentation and classification of COVID-19 images, (ii) furthermore, we use the homomorphic encryption scheme to secure the local model that encrypts and decrypts the gradients, (iii) finally, the model is shared over a decentralized platform through the proposed blockchain-based federated learning algorithm. The integration of blockchain and federated learning leads to a new paradigm for medical image data sharing over the decentralized network. To validate our proposed model, we conducted comprehensive experiments and the results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed scheme.
