The phosphotransacetylase-acetate kinase (Pta-AckA) pathway is thought to be a vital ATP generating pathway for Staphylococcus aureus. Disruption of the Pta-AckA pathway during overflow metabolism causes significant reduction in growth rate and viability, albeit not due to intracellular ATP depletion.
