Plastic anisotropy and dislocation trajectory in BCC metals.

ABSTRACT: Plasticity in body-centred cubic (BCC) metals at low temperatures is atypical, marked in particular by an anisotropic elastic limit in clear violation of the famous Schmid law applicable to most other metals. This effect is known to originate from the behaviour of the screw dislocations; however, the underlying physics has so far remained insufficiently understood to predict plastic anisotropy without adjustable parameters. Here we show that deviations from the Schmid law can be quantified from the deviations of the screw dislocation trajectory away from a straight path between equilibrium configurations, a consequence of the asymmetrical and metal-dependent potential energy landscape of the dislocation. We propose a modified parameter-free Schmid law, based on a projection of the applied stress on the curved trajectory, which compares well with experimental variations and first-principles calculations of the dislocation Peierls stress as a function of crystal orientation.

Repulsion leads to coupled dislocation motion and extended work hardening in bcc metals.

Project description:Work hardening in bcc single crystals at low homologous temperature shows a strong orientation-dependent hardening for high symmetry loading, which is not captured by classical dislocation density based models. We demonstrate here that the high activation barrier for screw dislocation glide motion in tungsten results in repulsive interactions between screw dislocations, and triggers dislocation motion at applied loading conditions where it is not expected. In situ transmission electron microscopy and atomistically informed discrete dislocation dynamics simulations confirm coupled dislocation motion and vanishing obstacle strength for repulsive screw dislocations, compatible with the kink pair mechanism of dislocation motion in the thermally activated (low temperature) regime. We implement this additional contribution to plastic strain in a modified crystal plasticity framework and show that it can explain the extended work hardening regime observed for [100] oriented tungsten single crystal. This may contribute to better understanding the increase in ductility of highly deformed bcc metals.

Mild-to-wild plastic transition is governed by athermal screw dislocation slip in bcc Nb.

Project description:Plastic deformation in crystals is mediated by the motion of line defects known as dislocations. For decades, dislocation activity has been treated as a homogeneous, smooth continuous process. However, it is now recognized that plasticity can be determined by long-range correlated and intermittent collective dislocation processes, known as avalanches. Here we demonstrate in body-centered cubic Nb how the long-range and scale-free dynamics at room temperature are progressively quenched out with decreasing temperature, eventually revealing intermittency with a characteristic length scale that approaches the Burgers vector itself. Plasticity is shown to be bimodal across the studied temperature regime, with conventional thermally-activated smooth plastic flow ('mild') coexisting with sporadic bursts ('wild') controlled by athermal screw dislocation activity, thereby violating the classical notion of temperature-dependent screw dislocation motion at low temperatures. An abrupt increase of the athermal avalanche component is identified at the critical temperature of the material. Our results indicate that plasticity at any scale can be understood in terms of the coexistence of these mild and wild modes of deformation, which could help design better alloys by suppressing one of the two modes in desired temperature windows.

Statistics of dislocation avalanches in FCC and BCC metals: dislocation mechanisms and mean swept distances across microsample sizes and temperatures.

Project description:Plastic deformation in crystalline materials consists of an ensemble of collective dislocation glide processes, which lead to strain burst emissions in micro-scale samples. To unravel the combined role of crystalline structure, sample size and temperature on these processes, we performed a comprehensive set of strict displacement-controlled micropillar compression experiments in conjunction with large-scale molecular dynamics and physics-based discrete dislocation dynamics simulations. The results indicate that plastic strain bursts consist of numerous individual dislocation glide events, which span over minuscule time intervals. The size distributions of these events exhibit a gradual transition from an incipient power-law slip regime (spanning [Formula: see text] 2.5 decades of slip sizes) to a large avalanche domain (spanning [Formula: see text] 4 decades of emission probability) at a cut-off slip magnitude [Formula: see text]. This cut-off slip provides a statistical measure to the characteristic mean dislocation swept distance, which allows for the scaling of the avalanche distributions vis-à-vis the archetypal dislocation mechanisms in face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) metals. Our statistical findings provide a new pathway to characterizing metal plasticity and towards comprehension of the sample size effects that limit the mechanical reliability in small-scale structures.

Shockwave generates < 100 > dislocation loops in bcc iron.

Project description:The formation mechanism of < 100 > interstitial dislocation loops in ferritic steels stemming from irradiation remains elusive, as their formations are either too short for experiments, or too long for molecular dynamics simulations. Here, we report on the formation of both interstitial and vacancy dislocation loops in high energy displacement cascades using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations with up to 220 million atoms. Riding the supersonic shockwave generated in the cascade, self-interstitial atoms are punched out to form < 100 > dislocation loops in only a few picoseconds during one single cascade event, which is several orders of magnitude faster than any existing mechanisms. The energy analysis suggests that the formation of the interstitial loops depends on kinetic energy redistribution, where higher incidence energy or larger atom mass could improve the probability of the direct nucleation of interstitial dislocation loops.

Mechanisms for <100> interstitial dislocation loops to diffuse in BCC iron.

Project description:The mobility of dislocation loops in materials is a principle factor in understanding the mechanical strength, and the evolution of microstructures due to deformation and radiation. In body-centered cubic (BCC) iron, the common belief is that <100> interstitial dislocation loops are immobile once formed. However, using self-adaptive accelerated molecular dynamics (SSAMD), a new diffusion mechanism has been discovered for <100> interstitial dislocation loops. The key aspect of the mechanism is the changing of the habit planes between the {100} plane and the {110} plane, which provides a path for the <100> loops to diffuse one-dimensionally. The migration behavior modeled with SSAMD is further confirmed by in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements, and represents a significant step for understanding the formation of <100> loop walls and the mechanical behavior of BCC Fe under irradiation.

Plastic flow anisotropy drives shear fracture.

Project description:Fracture of initially crack-free bodies often occurs due to plastic instabilities known as shear bands. Previous computer simulations advanced a myriad of mechanisms to rationalize shear banding. However, they were restricted to planar geometries. We investigate the relevance of anisotropic plasticity by picking an axisymmetric tensile test rig, in which shear localization is rarely observed. The three-dimensional finite-element simulations of shear banding in this type of specimens are the first of their kind. The micromechanical modeling covers a range of competing mechanisms believed to be responsible for such failure. We show that anisotropic plasticity can effectively trigger shear bands thereby causing failure of ductile solids. Our results enable shear fracture to be rationalized in ductile rocks and mitigated against in designing advanced materials.

"Conjugate channeling" effect in dislocation core diffusion: carbon transport in dislocated BCC iron.

Project description:Dislocation pipe diffusion seems to be a well-established phenomenon. Here we demonstrate an unexpected effect, that the migration of interstitials such as carbon in iron may be accelerated not in the dislocation line direction ξ, but in a conjugate diffusion direction. This accelerated random walk arises from a simple crystallographic channeling effect. c is a function of the Burgers vector b, but not ξ, thus a dislocation loop possesses the same everywhere. Using molecular dynamics and accelerated dynamics simulations, we further show that such dislocation-core-coupled carbon diffusion in iron has temperature-dependent activation enthalpy like a fragile glass. The 71° mixed dislocation is the only case in which we see straightforward pipe diffusion that does not depend on dislocation mobility.

Local electronic descriptors for solute-defect interactions in bcc refractory metals.

Project description:The interactions between solute atoms and crystalline defects such as vacancies, dislocations, and grain boundaries are essential in determining alloy properties. Here we present a general linear correlation between two descriptors of local electronic structures and the solute-defect interaction energies in binary alloys of body-centered-cubic (bcc) refractory metals (such as W and Ta) with transition-metal substitutional solutes. One electronic descriptor is the bimodality of the d-orbital local density of states for a matrix atom at the substitutional site, and the other is related to the hybridization strength between the valance sp- and d-bands for the same matrix atom. For a particular pair of solute-matrix elements, this linear correlation is valid independent of types of defects and the locations of substitutional sites. These results provide the possibility to apply local electronic descriptors for quantitative and efficient predictions on the solute-defect interactions and defect properties in alloys.

Electronic descriptors for dislocation deformation behavior and intrinsic ductility in bcc high-entropy alloys.

Project description:Controlling the balance between strength and damage tolerance in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) is central to their application as structural materials. Materials discovery efforts for HEAs are therefore impeded by an incomplete understanding of the chemical factors governing this balance. Through first-principles calculations, this study explores factors governing intrinsic ductility of a crucial subset of HEAs-those with a body-centered cubic (bcc) crystal structure. Analyses of three sets of bcc HEAs comprising nine different compositions reveal that alloy chemistry profoundly influences screw dislocation core structure, dislocation vibrational properties, and intrinsic ductility parameters derived from unstable stacking fault and surface energies. Key features in the electronic structure are identified that correlate with these properties: the fraction of occupied bonding states and bimodality of the d-orbital density of states. The findings enhance the fundamental understanding of the origins of intrinsic ductility and establish an electronic structure-based framework for computationally accelerated materials discovery and design.

Collision cascades interact with an edge dislocation in bcc Fe: a molecular dynamics study.

Project description:The interactions of an edge dislocation (ED) with collision cascades induced by 5 keV primary knocked-on atoms (PKAs) towards the ED in bcc Fe are studied using classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. It is found that the number and distribution of the residual point defects are related to the distance between the initial PKAs and the ED. Based on this result, we provide a comprehensive summary of four characteristic phenomena for cascade-ED interactions, including few interactions, the formation of a vacancy cluster, the sink effect for point defects, and the sub-cascade area affection, depending on the overlap of the peak cascades' area with the ED line. Then a qualitative model is proposed to clearly elucidate the underlying mechanisms of the four situations. Considering that dislocations constitute an essential part of the micro-structure of crystalline solids, our work demonstrates that: the pre-existing dislocations in crystalline materials could induce diverse effects under irradiation environments, which should be taken into account for designing and improving the radiation resistant materials.
