ABSTRACT: Luminescent liquid crystals have received significant research interest due to their wide range of applications. Here, new pyridine derivatives were designed as liquid crystalline materials. They were successfully synthesized via appropriate synthetic routes, their structures confirmed by various spectral techniques, and finally characterized for their mesogenic, optical and optoelectronic properties.

New Nitro-Laterally Substituted Azomethine Derivatives; Synthesis, Mesomorphic and Computational Characterizations.

Project description:Two new homologues series, based on two rings of the azomethine central group bearing the terminal alkoxy group of various chain lengths, were prepared. The alkoxy chain length varied between 6 and 16 carbons. The other terminal wing in the first series was the F atom, and the compound is named N-4-florobenzylidene-4-(alkoxy)benzenamine (In). The second group of compounds included a lateral NO2 substituent in addition to the terminal F atom, named N-(4-fluoro-3-nitrobenzylidene)-4-(alkyloxy)aniline (IIn). Mesomorphic and optical properties were carried out via differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Elemental analyses, FT-IR, and NMR spectroscopy were carried out to elucidate the molecular structures of the synthesized groups. Mesomorphic investigations indicated that all the synthesized homologues (In) were monomorphic, possessing the smectic A (SmA) phase monotropically, while the second group (IIn) members were non-mesomorphic. The experimental data indicated that the formation of the mesophase is affected by the protrusion of the lateral nitro group. The disruption of the mesophase in the second group was attributed to the increase of its molecular width, which affects its lateral intermolecular interactions. The computational simulations were in agreement with the experimental data. On the other hand, the location of NO2 group within the molecular geometry increased the melting temperature of the molecule, and thus, affected their thermal and physical properties. By discussing the estimated parameters, it was found that the molecular architecture, the dipole moment, and the polarizability of the investigated compounds are highly affected by the electronic nature and position of the terminal and lateral substituents as well as their volumes.

Synthesis and Mesomorphic and Electrical Investigations of New Furan Liquid Crystal Derivatives.

Project description:New homologues set liquid crystalline materials, based on furfural derivatives, namely, (E)-4-((furan-2-ylmethylene)amino)phenyl 4-alkoxybenzoate (F n), were synthesized and investigated for their mesomorphic and optical characteristics. The prepared homologues series constitutes three derivatives that bear different terminal flexible alkyl chain lengths that vary between 6 and 12 carbons and attached to the phenyl ring linked to the ester group. A furfural moiety is introduced into the other terminal of the molecular structure. Mesomorphic characterizations of the prepared derivatives were measured using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Molecular structures were elucidated via elemental analyses, FTIR, and NMR spectroscopy. DSC and POM showed that all the synthesized furfural derivatives are purely nematogenic, exhibiting an enantiotropic nematic (N) mesophase, except for the longest chain derivative (F 12) that is dimorphic possessing a monotropic smectic A phase and an enantiotropic N mesophase. Results indicated that the incorporation of the heterocyclic furfural ring into the molecular skeleton affected both the mesophase range and stability of investigated homologue. Analysis of the optical properties revealed that the shortest chain compound (F 6) possesses two direct band gaps, at 2.73 and 3.64 eV, in addition to higher absorption than the higher homologues, F 10 and F 12. On the other hand, all the synthesized homologues (F n) showed Ohmic behaviors, with electric resistances in the GΩ range. The values of the electrical resistances are 103.71, 12.91, and 196.85 GΩ at 0.05 V for F 6, F 10, and F 12, respectively.

Design, Synthesis, Characterization, and Insecticidal Bioefficacy Screening of Some New Pyridine Derivatives.

Project description:A lot of insecticides are found nowadays, but neonicotinoids are considered the most famous. So, a series of pyridine derivatives neonicotinoids analogues, namely, 3-cyano-4,6-dimethylpyridine-2(1H)-one (1), 2-chloro-3-cyano-4,6-dimethylpyridine (2), 3-cyano-4,6-dimethylpyridine-2(1H)-thione (3), 3-cyano-4,6-distyrylpyridine-2(1H)-thione (4), 2-((3-cyano-4,6-distyrylpyridin-2-yl)thio)-N-phenylacetamide (5), 3-amino-N-phenyl-4,6-distyrylthieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carboxamide (6), 2-((3-cyano-4,6-distyrylpyridin-2-yl)thio)-N-(p-tolyl)acetamide (7), 3-amino-4,6-distyryl-N-(p-tolyl)thieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carboxamide (8), 2-((3-cyano-4,6-distyrylpyridin-2-yl)thio)-N-(4-methoxyphenyl)acetamide (9), and 3-amino-N-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4,6-distyrylthieno[2,3-b]pyridine-2-carboxamide (10), have been designed and synthesized in pure state, and their agricultural bioefficacy as insecticides against cowpea aphid Aphis craccivora Koch was screened. The structures of the synthesized compounds were verified by means of spectroscopic and elemental analyses. Insecticidal bioefficacy data illustrated that some compounds are excellent against cowpea aphid, and the bioefficacy of the rest of the tested compounds ranged from good to moderate against the same insects.

Novel Discotic Boroxines: Synthesis and Mesomorphic Properties.

Project description:A new synthetic approach to highly substituted triphenylboroxines 11 is described. Their mesomorphic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (SAXS, WAXS). The tris(3,4,5-trialkyloxy)phenyl functionalized derivatives 11b-e showed broad mesophases for a minimum alkyl chain length of C9. The phase widths ranged from 110 K to 77 K near room temperature, thus decreasing with enhanced alkyl chain lengths. Textures observed under POM indicated a columnar hexagonal (Colh) mesophase symmetry that was confirmed by X-ray diffraction experiments.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Antiproliferative Properties of New Bio-Inspired Xanthylium Derivatives.

Project description:Xanthylium derivatives are curcumin analogs showing photochromic properties. Similarly, to anthocyanins, they follow the same multistate network of chemical species that are reversibly interconverted by external stimuli. In the present work, two new asymmetric monocarbonyl analogues of curcumin, 4-(4-hydroxy-3-metoxybenzylidene)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroxanthylium chloride (compound 3) and 4-(4-hydroxybenzylidene)-6-methoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroxanthylium chloride (compound 4) were synthesized, and their photochromic and biological properties were investigated. The UV-Vis spectroscopy and the direct and reverse pH-jumps studies confirmed the halochromic properties and the existence of different molecular species. A network of chemical reactions of these species was proposed. Furthermore, the antiproliferative properties of both compounds were evaluated using P19 murine embryocarcinoma cells and compared with each other. The results demonstrate that both new xanthylium derivatives modify the progression through the cell cycle of P19 cells, which translates into a significant antiproliferative effect. The effect of the methoxy group position is discussed and several checkpoint proteins are advanced as putative targets.

Synthetic, Mesomorphic, and DFT Investigations of New Nematogenic Polar Naphthyl Benzoate Ester Derivatives.

Project description:Four new non-symmetrical derivatives based on central naphthalene moiety, 4-((4-(alkoxy)phenyl) diazenyl)naphthalen-1-yl 4-substitutedbenzoate (In/x), were prepared, and their properties were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The synthesized materials bear two wing groups: an alkoxy chain of differing proportionate length (n = 6 and 16 carbons) and one terminal attached to a polar group, X. Their molecular structures were elucidated via elemental analyses and FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM) were carried out to evaluate their mesomorphic properties. The results of the experimental investigations revealed that all the synthesized analogues possess only an enantiotropic nematic (N) mesophase with a high thermal stability and broad range. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were in accordance with the experimental investigations and revealed that all prepared materials are to be linear and planar. Moreover, the rigidity of the molecule increased when an extra fused ring was inserted into the center of the structural shape, so its thermal and geometrical parameters were affected. Energy gap predictions confirmed that the I16/c derivative is more reactive than other compounds.

Synthesis and Characterization of Bis-Triazolyl-Pyridine Derivatives as Noncanonical DNA-Interacting Compounds.

Project description:Besides the well-known double-helical conformation, DNA is capable of folding into various noncanonical arrangements, such as G-quadruplexes (G4s) and i-motifs (iMs), whose occurrence in gene promoters, replication origins, and telomeres highlights the breadth of biological processes that they might regulate. Particularly, previous studies have reported that G4 and iM structures may play different roles in controlling gene transcription. Anyway, molecular tools able to simultaneously stabilize/destabilize those structures are still needed to shed light on what happens at the biological level. Herein, a multicomponent reaction and a click chemistry functionalization were combined to generate a set of 31 bis-triazolyl-pyridine derivatives which were initially screened by circular dichroism for their ability to interact with different G4 and/or iM DNAs and to affect the thermal stability of these structures. All the compounds were then clustered through multivariate data analysis, based on such capability. The most promising compounds were subjected to a further biophysical and biological characterization, leading to the identification of two molecules simultaneously able to stabilize G4s and destabilize iMs, both in vitro and in living cells.

Synthesis and mesomorphic properties of calamitic malonates and cyanoacetates tethered to 4-cyanobiphenyls.

Project description:4-Cyano-1,1'-biphenyl derivatives bearing ω-hydroxyalkyl substituents were reacted with methyl 3-chloro-3-oxopropionate or cyanoacetic acid, giving liquid-crystalline linear malonates and cyanoacetates. These compounds formed monotropic nematic phases at 62 °C down to ambient temperature upon cooling from the isotropic liquid. The mesomorphic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction (WAXS).

Two New Fluorinated Phenol Derivatives Pyridine Schiff Bases: Synthesis, Spectral, Theoretical Characterization, Inclusion in Epichlorohydrin-β-Cyclodextrin Polymer, and Antifungal Effect.

Project description:It has been reported that the structure of the Schiff bases is fundamental for their function in biomedical applications. Pyridine Schiff bases are characterized by the presence of a pyridine and a phenolic ring, connected by an azomethine group. In this case, the nitrogen present in the pyridine is responsible for antifungal effects, where the phenolic ring may be also participating in this bioactivity. In this study, we synthesized two new pyridine Schiff Bases: (E)-2-[(3-Amino-pyridin-4-ylimino)-methyl]-4,6-difluoro-phenol (F1) and (E)- 2-[(3-Amino-pyridin-4-ylimino)-methyl]-6-fluoro-phenol (F2), which only differ in the fluorine substitutions in the phenolic ring. We fully characterized both F1 and F2 by FTIR, UV-vis, 1H; 13C; 19F-NMR, DEPT, HHCOSY, TOCSY, and cyclic voltammetry, as well as by computational studies (DFT), and NBO analysis. In addition, we assessed the antifungal activity of both F1 (two fluorine substitution at positions 4 and 6 in the phenolic ring) and F2 (one fluorine substitution at position 6 in the phenolic ring) against yeasts. We found that only F1 exerted a clear antifungal activity, showing that, for these kind of Schiff bases, the phenolic ring substitutions can modulate biological properties. In addition, we included F1 and F2 into in epichlorohydrin-β-cyclodextrin polymer (βCD), where the Schiff bases remained inside the βCD as determined by the ki , TGA, DSC, and SBET. We found that the inclusion in βCD improved the solubility in aqueous media and the antifungal activity of both F1 and F2, revealing antimicrobial effects normally hidden by the presence of common solvents (e.g., DMSO) with some cellular inhibitory activity. The study of structural prerequisites for antimicrobial activity, and the inclusion in polymers to improve solubility, is important for the design of new drugs.

Elemental analyses, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy were carried out to elucidate the molecular structures of the prepared derivatives. Mesomorphic results indicated that all the synthesized homologs (An) are monomorphic possessing the nematic (N) phase enantiotropically with wide thermal stability. Computational simulations were measured via density functional theory (DFT) theoretical calculation tool. The estimated thermal and geometrical parameters are in agreement with the experimental data. By discussing the estimated parameters, it was found that the molecular architecture, dipole moment and the polarizability of the investigated compounds are highly affected by the length of the attached terminal flexible chain and the location of the nitrogen atom in the other terminal aromatic ring. Binary phase diagrams of two corresponding homologs with different proportionating terminals were constructed, and their binary phase physical properties were discussed in terms of the temperature range and stability of the N phase.
