A Primer for Developing Measures of Science Content Knowledge for Small-Scale Research and Instructional Use.

ABSTRACT: The credibility of conclusions made about the effectiveness of educational interventions depends greatly on the quality of the assessments used to measure learning gains. This essay, intended for faculty involved in small-scale projects, courses, or educational research, provides a step-by-step guide to the process of developing, scoring, and validating high-quality content knowledge assessments. We illustrate our discussion with examples from our assessments of high school students' understanding of concepts in cell biology and epigenetics. Throughout, we emphasize the iterative nature of the development process, the importance of creating instruments aligned to the learning goals of an intervention or curricula, and the importance of collaborating with other content and measurement specialists along the way.

Cultivating inclusive instructional and research environments in ecology and evolutionary science.

Project description:As we strive to lift up a diversity of voices in science, it is important for ecologists, evolutionary scientists, and educators to foster inclusive environments in their research and teaching. Academics in science often lack exposure to research on best practices in diversity, equity, and inclusion and may not know where to start to make scientific environments more welcoming and inclusive. We propose that by approaching research and teaching with empathy, flexibility, and a growth mind-set, scientists can be more supportive and inclusive of their colleagues and students. This paper provides guidance, explores strategies, and directs scientists to resources to better cultivate an inclusive environment in three common settings: the classroom, the research laboratory, and the field. As ecologists and evolutionary scientists, we have an opportunity to adapt our teaching and research practices in order to foster an inclusive educational ecosystem for students and colleagues alike.

Using Gagne’s “Instructional Design” to teach clinically applicable knowledge in small groups

Project description:Background Anesthesia trainees are expected to perform tasks under non-direct supervision as soon as possible in their clinical training. Often they rely on only superficial rote learning, which might lead to medical errors. We have developed a lesson plan that is based on this educational need using Gagné’s Instructional Design for the example of teaching the complex preoperative management of diabetic patients. Our aim was to use Gagne’s approach successfully for the teaching of non-procedural skills. Methods We implemented a comprehensive lesson plan that was developed on the example of a clinical pattern – the preoperative assessment of diabetic patients - using Gagné’s systematic nine-step model of instruction design. After the lesson, we analysed the trainees’ opinions with the use of a standardized questionnaire. Results Nine trainees with 2.1 ± 0.8 years of anesthesia experience attended the lesson. The assessment of knowledge revealed in 82% the correct answers to the treatment options, and the residents’ overall view on the lecture concept were 4.8 ± 0.3 for lecture concept and realization and 4.7 ± 0.5 regarding motivation, participation and climate. Conclusions Applying Gagné’s Instructional Design model guides seems to effectively guide the development of a comprehensive lesson plan to teach non-procedural skills in a small group setting.

Instructional interventions for improving COVID-19 knowledge, attitudes, behaviors: Evidence from a large-scale RCT in India.

Project description:Seeking ways to encourage broad compliance with health guidelines during the pandemic, especially among youth, we test two hypotheses pertaining to the optimal design of instructional interventions for improving COVID-19-related knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. We randomly assigned 8376 lower-middle income youth in urban India to three treatments: a concentrated and targeted fact-based, instructional intervention; a longer instructional intervention that provided the same facts along with underlying scientific concepts; and a control. Relative to existing efforts, we find that both instructional interventions increased COVID-19-related knowledge immediately after intervention. Relative to the shorter fact-based intervention, the longer intervention resulted in sustained improvements in knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported behavior. Instead of reducing attention and comprehension by youth, the longer scientific based treatment appears to have increased understanding and retention of the material. The findings are instrumental to understanding the design of instruction and communication in affecting compliance during this and future pandemics.

How repeated exposure to informal science education affects content knowledge of and perspectives on science among incarcerated adults.

Project description:Over two million men, women, and youth are incarcerated in the United States. This large and ethnically diverse population has, in general, more limited exposure to education, particularly in scientific fields, than the general public. Formal educational programs for the incarcerated can be expensive and logistically difficult to initiate and maintain, but informal science education (ISE) approaches have the potential to significantly improve inmates' view of science and of themselves as science learners. However, "dosage effects"-how repeated exposure to educational experiences may affect listeners-are poorly documented. In this study, we evaluated the longitudinal effects of an ISE program in Utah, which provided a monthly lecture series delivered by academic scientists on a range of science topics. Science content knowledge, self-perception as a science learner, interest in science, and a desire to seek out more scientific information all significantly improved for inmates attending lectures. We also found that seeing a greater number of lectures is positively associated with a desire to seek out additional information. We documented an inverse relationship between education background and the increase in a desire to learn more, suggesting that those with more limited exposure to science manifest the greatest increase in seeking out more information. These results suggest that ISE for the incarcerated significantly improves their knowledge of, and relationship with, science; that some of these effects carry over across months or years; and that ISE programs can have the largest impact by focusing on those with more limited prior exposure to science.

Exploring the Complementarity of Measures of Instructional Practices.

Project description:The assessment of instructional quality has been and continues to be a desirable, yet difficult endeavor in higher education. The development of new teaching evaluation frameworks along with instruments to measure various aspects of teaching practices holds promise. The challenge rests in the implementation of these frameworks and measures in authentic settings. Part of this challenge is for instructors, researchers, and administrators to parse through and select a meaningful set of tools from the plethora of existing instruments. In this study, we aim to start clarifying the landscape of measures of instructional practice by exploring the complementarity of two existing instruments: the Classroom Observation Protocol for Undergraduate STEM (COPUS) and the Learner-Centered Teaching Rubrics (LCTR). We collected classroom observations and course artifacts from 28 science instructors from research-intensive institutions across the United States. Results show the need to use both instruments to capture nuanced and comprehensive description of a faculty member's instructional practice. This study highlights the messiness of measuring instructional quality and the need to explore the implementation of teaching evaluation frameworks and measures of instructional practices in authentic settings.

Design, Development, and Evaluation of a Teacher Workshop Enhanced with DNA Instructional Cases to Impact Content Knowledge and Confidence.

Project description:In an effort to address K-8 teacher confidence in STEM and increase basic genetics knowledge to a level consistent with its importance in society, we have developed, implemented, and evaluated a 7-day teacher professional development workshop. The overarching goal of our workshop is to facilitate the implementation of innovative DNA-based classroom activities in K-8 classrooms by (i) increasing teacher content knowledge, (ii) increasing teacher confidence in teaching STEM, and (iii) developing teacher interest in using engaging activities, so they are empowered to teach new content in compelling ways. We relied on case-based learning to provide relevance and context to scientific content that was not initially familiar to many of the teachers. Here we describe the workshop and its evaluation. Overall results suggest positive gains in teacher learning, confidence, and interest in the scientific content, as well as the intention to incorporate the scientific content and activities into their teaching.

Developing research knowledge and capability in undergraduate nurses: evaluation of targeted placements.

Project description:BackgroundThere are few opportunities for undergraduate nurses to undertake experiential learning about research design and conduct. The project aim was to implement and evaluate a placement to support the development of research knowledge and skills.MethodsEstablishment of a four-week placement, with allocation to a registered quality improvement/service evaluation project. Evaluation was obtained through questionnaires; student experience (pre, post and one year), supervisor experience and organisational impact (presentations, conference and grant submissions).Results24 students (five cohorts) were allocated to 17 projects (2017-2019). 100% of students enjoyed the placement, gained research knowledge and insight into clinical care. At one year (n = 15), 88% of students would consider undertaking a service evaluation and 65% (n = 11) would consider further post-graduate study. All supervisors (n = 20) reported the initiative valuable for student development. All project results were shared with relevant local teams to enable service planning and results from five projects been presented at eight national and international conferences. Three projects have contributed directly to further research grant submissions.ConclusionThe programme supports the development of undergraduate nurses to be research ready and facilitates organisations to address high-priority safety and quality topics. Further resources are required to be able to increase placement capacity.

Draw me Science: Multi-level and multi-scale reconstruction of knowledge dynamics with phylomemies.

Project description:In 1751, Jean le Rond d'Alembert had a dream: "to make a genealogical or encyclopedic tree which will gather the various branches of knowledge together under a single point of view and will serve to indicate their origin and their relationships to one another". In this paper, we address the question identifying the branches of science by taking advantage of the massive digitization of scientific production. In the framework of complex systems studies, we first formalize the notion of level and scale of knowledge dynamics. Then, we demonstrate how we can reconstruct a reasonably precise and concise multi-scale and multi-level approximation of the dynamical structures of Science: phylomemies. We introduce the notion of phylomemetic networks-projections of phylomemies in low dimensional spaces that can be grasped by the human mind-and propose a new algorithm to reconstruct both phylomemies and the associated phylomemetic networks. This algorithm offers, passing, a new temporal clustering on evolving semantic networks. Last, we show how phylomemy reconstruction can take into account users' preferences within the framework of embodied cognition, thus defining a third way between the quest for objective "ground truth" and the ad-hoc adaptation to a particular user's preferences. Assessing the STEM landscape: the current instructional climate survey and the evidence-based instructional practices adoption scale.

Project description:BackgroundThe efficacy of active learning within STEM education is clear, and many institutions are working to help faculty adopt evidence-based instructional practices (EBIPs) which can promote active learning. In order to know the current status of our campus regarding these goals, measures of current instructional climate and the adoption of evidence-based instructional practices (EBIPs) are desired.ResultsUsing a campus-wide online survey approach with remuneration for faculty participants, the 28-item current instructional climate survey (CICS) and the 6-item EBIP adoption scale were developed. When CICS and EBIP adoption scale outcomes are compared, patterns emerge which reflect the climate, conditions, and personal characteristics of faculty at different stages of EBIP adoption.ConclusionsAlthough not causal relationships, understanding both climate and personal change characteristics can be helpful to campus change agents in assessing the current STEM landscape of faculty practices.
