Multiscale conformal pattern transfer.

ABSTRACT: We demonstrate a method for seamless transfer from a parent flat substrate of basically any lithographic top-down or bottom-up pattern onto essentially any kind of surface. The nano- or microscale patterns, spanning macroscopic surface areas, can be transferred with high conformity onto a large variety of surfaces when such patterns are produced on a thin carbon film, grown on top of a sacrificial layer. The latter allows lifting the patterns from the flat parent substrate onto a water-air interface to be picked up by the host surface of choice. We illustrate the power of this technique by functionalizing broad range of materials including glass, plastics, metals, rough semiconductors and polymers, highlighting the potential applications in in situ colorimetry of the chemistry of materials, anti-counterfeit technologies, biomolecular and biomedical studies, light-matter interactions at the nanoscale, conformal photovoltaics and flexible electronics.

Reflow transfer for conformal three-dimensional microprinting.

Project description:From microcircuits to metamaterials, the micropatterning of surfaces adds valuable functionality. For nonplanar surfaces, incompatibility with conventional microlithography requires the transfer of originally planar micropatterns onto those surfaces; however, existing approaches accommodate only limited curvatures. A microtransfer approach was developed using reflowable materials that transform between solid and liquid on demand, freely stretching to yield transfers that naturally conform down to nanoscale radii of curvature and arbitrarily complex topographies. Such reflow transfer helps generalize microprinting, extending the reach of precision planar microlithography to highly nonplanar substrates and microstructures. With gentle water-based processing, reflow transfer can be applied to a range of materials, with microprinting demonstrated onto metal, plastic, paper, glass, polystyrene, semiconductor, elastomer, hydrogel, and multiple biological surfaces.

Thermal Release Transfer Printing for Stretchable Conformal Bioelectronics.

Project description:Soft neural electrode arrays that are mechanically matched between neural tissues and electrodes offer valuable opportunities for the development of disease diagnose and brain computer interface systems. Here, a thermal release transfer printing method for fabrication of stretchable bioelectronics, such as soft neural electrode arrays, is presented. Due to the large, switchable and irreversible change in adhesion strength of thermal release tape, a low-cost, easy-to-operate, and temperature-controlled transfer printing process can be achieved. The mechanism of this method is analyzed by experiments and fracture-mechanics models. Using the thermal release transfer printing method, a stretchable neural electrode array is fabricated by a sacrificial-layer-free process. The ability of the as-fabricated electrode array to conform different curvilinear surfaces is confirmed by experimental and theoretical studies. High-quality electrocorticography signals of anesthetized rat are collected with the as-fabricated electrode array, which proves good conformal interface between the electrodes and dura mater. The application of the as-fabricated electrode array on detecting the steady-state visual evoked potentials research is also demonstrated by in vivo experiments and the results are compared with those detected by stainless-steel screw electrodes.

Multiscale co-simulation design pattern for neuroscience applications.

Project description:Integration of information across heterogeneous sources creates added scientific value. Interoperability of data, tools and models is, however, difficult to accomplish across spatial and temporal scales. Here we introduce the toolbox Parallel Co-Simulation, which enables the interoperation of simulators operating at different scales. We provide a software science co-design pattern and illustrate its functioning along a neuroscience example, in which individual regions of interest are simulated on the cellular level allowing us to study detailed mechanisms, while the remaining network is efficiently simulated on the population level. A workflow is illustrated for the use case of The Virtual Brain and NEST, in which the CA1 region of the cellular-level hippocampus of the mouse is embedded into a full brain network involving micro and macro electrode recordings. This new tool allows integrating knowledge across scales in the same simulation framework and validating them against multiscale experiments, thereby largely widening the explanatory power of computational models.

Bridging scales in a multiscale pattern-forming system.

Project description:Self-organized pattern formation is vital for many biological processes. Reaction-diffusion models have advanced our understanding of how biological systems develop spatial structures, starting from homogeneity. However, biological processes inherently involve multiple spatial and temporal scales and transition from one pattern to another over time, rather than progressing from homogeneity to a pattern. To deal with such multiscale systems, coarse-graining methods are needed that allow the dynamics to be reduced to the relevant degrees of freedom at large scales, but without losing information about the patterns at small scales. Here, we present a semiphenomenological approach which exploits mass conservation in pattern formation, and enables reconstruction of information about patterns from the large-scale dynamics. The basic idea is to partition the domain into distinct regions (coarse grain) and determine instantaneous dispersion relations in each region, which ultimately inform about local pattern-forming instabilities. We illustrate our approach by studying the Min system, a paradigmatic model for protein pattern formation. By performing simulations, we first show that the Min system produces multiscale patterns in a spatially heterogeneous geometry. This prediction is confirmed experimentally by in vitro reconstitution of the Min system. Using a recently developed theoretical framework for mass-conserving reaction-diffusion systems, we show that the spatiotemporal evolution of the total protein densities on large scales reliably predicts the pattern-forming dynamics. Our approach provides an alternative and versatile theoretical framework for complex systems where analytical coarse-graining methods are not applicable, and can, in principle, be applied to a wide range of systems with an underlying conservation law.

Compact conformal tattoo-polymer antenna for on-body wireless power transfer.

Project description:This paper presents a 35.0 × 35.0 × 2.7 mm3 compact, low-profile, and lightweight wearable antenna for on-body wireless power transfer. The proposed antenna can be easily printed on a piece of flexible tattoo paper and transformed onto a PDMS substrate, making the entire antenna structure conform to the human body for achieving a better user experience. Here, a layer of frequency selective surface (FSS) is inserted in between the antenna and human tissue, which has successfully reduced the loading effects of the tissue, with 13.8 dB improvement on the antenna gain. Also, the operating frequency of the rectenna is not affected much by deformation. To maximize the RF-DC conversion efficiency, a matching loop, a matching stub, and two coupled lines are integrated with the antenna for tuning the rectenna so that a wide bandwidth (~ 24%) can be achieved without the use of any external matching networks. Measurement results show that the proposed rectenna can achieve a maximum conversion efficiency of 59.0% with an input power of 5.75 μW/cm2 and can even exceed 40% for a low input power of 1.0 μW/cm2 with a 20 kΩ resistive load, while many other reported rectennas can only achieve a high PCE at a high power density level, which is not always practical for a wearable antenna.

Pattern-Driven Navigation in 2D Multiscale Visualizations with Scalable Insets.

Project description:We present Scalable Insets, a technique for interactively exploring and navigating large numbers of annotated patterns in multiscale visualizations such as gigapixel images, matrices, or maps. Exploration of many but sparsely-distributed patterns in multiscale visualizations is challenging as visual representations change across zoom levels, context and navigational cues get lost upon zooming, and navigation is time consuming. Our technique visualizes annotated patterns too small to be identifiable at certain zoom levels using insets, i.e., magnified thumbnail views of the annotated patterns. Insets support users in searching, comparing, and contextualizing patterns while reducing the amount of navigation needed. They are dynamically placed either within the viewport or along the boundary of the viewport to offer a compromise between locality and context preservation. Annotated patterns are interactively clustered by location and type. They are visually represented as an aggregated inset to provide scalable exploration within a single viewport. In a controlled user study with 18 participants, we found that Scalable Insets can speed up visual search and improve the accuracy of pattern comparison at the cost of slower frequency estimation compared to a baseline technique. A second study with 6 experts in the field of genomics showed that Scalable Insets is easy to learn and provides first insights into how Scalable Insets can be applied in an open-ended data exploration scenario.

Multiscale pattern analysis of orientation-selective activity in the primary visual cortex.

Project description:Although orientation columns are less than a millimeter in width, recent neuroimaging studies indicate that viewed orientations can be decoded from cortical activity patterns sampled at relatively coarse resolutions of several millimeters. One proposal is that these differential signals arise from random spatial irregularities in the columnar map. However, direct support for this hypothesis has yet to be obtained. Here, we used high-field, high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and multivariate pattern analysis to determine the spatial scales at which orientation-selective information can be found in the primary visual cortex (V1) of cats and humans. We applied a multiscale pattern analysis approach in which fine- and coarse-scale signals were first removed by ideal spatial lowpass and highpass filters, and the residual activity patterns then analyzed by linear classifiers. Cat visual cortex, imaged at 0.3125 mm resolution, showed a strong orientation signal at the scale of individual columns. Nonetheless, reliable orientation bias could still be found at spatial scales of several millimeters. In the human visual cortex, imaged at 1 mm resolution, a majority of orientation information was found on scales of millimeters, with small contributions from global spatial biases exceeding approximately 1 cm. Our high-resolution imaging results demonstrate a reliable millimeters-scale orientation signal, likely emerging from irregular spatial arrangements of orientation columns and their supporting vasculature. fMRI pattern analysis methods are thus likely to be sensitive to signals originating from other irregular columnar structures elsewhere in the brain.

A study for multiscale information transfer measures based on conditional mutual information.

Project description:As the big data science develops, efficient methods are demanded for various data analysis. Granger causality provides the prime model for quantifying causal interactions. However, this theoretic model does not meet the requirement for real-world data analysis, because real-world time series are diverse whose models are usually unknown. Therefore, model-free measures such as information transfer measures are strongly desired. Here, we propose the multi-scale extension of conditional mutual information measures using MORLET wavelet, which are named the WM and WPM. The proposed measures are computational efficient and interpret information transfer by multi-scales. We use both synthetic data and real-world examples to demonstrate the efficiency of the new methods. The results of the new methods are robust and reliable. Via the simulation studies, we found the new methods outperform the wavelet extension of transfer entropy (WTE) in both computational efficiency and accuracy. The features and properties of the proposed measures are also discussed.

Conformal Vortex Crystals.

Project description:We investigate theoretically globally nonuniform configurations of quantized-flux vortices in clean superconductors trapped by an external force field that induces a nonuniform vortex density profile. Using an extensive series of numerical simulations, we demonstrate that, for suitable choices of the force field, and bellow a certain transition temperature, the vortex system self-organizes into highly inhomogeneous conformal crystals in a way as to minimize the total energy. These nonuniform structures are topologically ordered and can be mathematically mapped into a triangular Abrikosov lattice via a conformal transformation. Above the crystallization temperature, the conformal vortex crystal becomes unstable and gives place to a nonuniform polycrystalline structure. We propose a simple method to engineer the potential energy profile necessary for the observation of conformal crystals of vortices, which can also be applied to other 2D particle systems, and suggest possible experiments in which conformal or quasi-conformal vortex crystals could be observed in bulk superconductors and in thin films.

Conformal Robotic Stereolithography.

Project description:Additive manufacturing by layerwise photopolymerization, commonly called stereolithography (SLA), is attractive due to its high resolution and diversity of materials chemistry. However, traditional SLA methods are restricted to planar substrates and planar layers that are perpendicular to a single-axis build direction. Here, we present a robotic system that is capable of maskless layerwise photopolymerization on curved surfaces, enabling production of large-area conformal patterns and the construction of conformal freeform objects. The system comprises an industrial six-axis robot and a custom-built maskless projector end effector. Use of the system involves creating a mesh representation of the freeform substrate, generation of a triangulated toolpath with curved layers that represents the target object to be printed, precision mounting of the substrate in the robot workspace, and robotic photopatterning of the target object by coordinated motion of the robot and substrate. We demonstrate printing of conformal photopatterns on spheres of various sizes, and construction of miniature three-dimensional objects on spheres without requiring support features. Improvement of the motion accuracy and development of freeform toolpaths would enable construction of polymer objects that surpass the size and support structure constraints imparted by traditional SLA systems.
