Project description:A novel calibration method based on polar coordinate is proposed. The world coordinates are expressed in the form of polar coordinates, which are converted to world coordinates in the calibration process. In the beginning, the calibration points are obtained in polar coordinates. By transformation between polar coordinates and rectangular coordinates, the points turn into form of rectangular coordinates. Then, the points are matched with the corresponding image coordinates. At last, the parameters are obtained by objective function optimization. By the proposed method, the relationships between objects and cameras are expressed in polar coordinates easily. It is suitable for multi-camera calibration. Cameras can be calibrated with fewer points. The calibration images can be positioned according to the location of cameras. The experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method is an efficient calibration method. By the method, cameras are calibrated conveniently with high accuracy.

Project description:The fish-eye lens camera offers the advantage of efficient acquisition of image data through a wide field of view. However, unlike the popular perspective projection camera, a strong distortion effect appears as the periphery of the image is compressed. Such characteristics must be precisely analyzed through camera self-calibration. In this study, we carried out a fish-eye lens camera self-calibration while considering different types of test objects and projection models. Self-calibration was performed using the V-, A-, Plane-, and Room-type test objects. In the fish-eye lens camera, the V-type test object was the most advantageous for ensuring the accuracy of the principal point coordinates and focal length, because the correlations between parameters were relatively low. On the other hand, the other test objects were advantageous for ensuring the accuracy of distortion parameters because of the well-distributed image points. Based on the above analysis, we proposed, an accurate fish-eye lens camera self-calibration method that applies the V-type test object. The RMS-residuals of the proposed method were less than 1 pixel.

Project description:The development of autonomous or semi-autonomous surgical robots stands to improve the performance of existing teleoperated equipment, but requires fine hand-eye calibration between the free-moving endoscopic camera and patient-side manipulator arms (PSMs). A novel method of solving this problem for the da Vinci® robotic surgical system and kinematically similar systems is presented. First, a series of image-processing and optical-tracking operations are performed to compute the coordinate transformation between the endoscopic camera view frame and an optical-tracking marker permanently affixed to the camera body. Then, the kinematic properties of the PSM are exploited to compute the coordinate transformation between the kinematic base frame of the PSM and an optical marker permanently affixed thereto. Using these transformations, it is then possible to compute the spatial relationship between the PSM and the endoscopic camera using only one tracker snapshot of the two markers. The effectiveness of this calibration is demonstrated by successfully guiding the PSM end effector to points of interest identified through the camera. Additional tests on a surgical task, namely grasping a surgical needle, are also performed to validate the proposed method. The resulting visually-guided robot positioning accuracy is better than the earlier hand-eye calibration results reported in the literature for the da Vinci® system, while supporting intraoperative update of the calibration and requiring only devices that are already commonly used in the surgical environment.

Project description:Currently, galvanometric scanning systems (like the one used in a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer) rely on a planar calibration procedure between a two-dimensional (2D) camera and the laser galvanometric scanning system to automatically aim a laser beam at a particular point on an object. In the case of nonplanar or moving objects, this calibration is not sufficiently accurate anymore. In this work, a three-dimensional (3D) calibration procedure that uses a 3D range sensor is proposed. The 3D calibration is valid for all types of objects and retains its accuracy when objects are moved between subsequent measurement campaigns. The proposed 3D calibration uses a Non-Perspective-n-Point (NPnP) problem solution. The 3D range sensor is used to calculate the position of the object under test relative to the laser galvanometric system. With this extrinsic calibration, the laser galvanometric scanning system can automatically aim a laser beam to this object. In experiments, the mean accuracy of aiming the laser beam on an object is below 10 mm for 95% of the measurements. This achieved accuracy is mainly determined by the accuracy and resolution of the 3D range sensor. The new calibration method is significantly better than the original 2D calibration method, which in our setup achieves errors below 68 mm for 95% of the measurements.

Project description:This paper describes a non-invasive, automatic, and robust method for calibrating a scalable RGB-D sensor network based on retroreflective ArUco markers and the iterative closest point (ICP) scheme. We demonstrate the system by calibrating a sensor network comprised of six sensor nodes positioned in a relatively large industrial robot cell with an approximate size of 10 x 10 x 4 m . Here, the automatic calibration achieved an average Euclidean error of 3 c m at distances up to 9 . 45 m . To achieve robustness, we apply several innovative techniques: Firstly, we mitigate the ambiguity problem that occurs when detecting a marker at long range or low resolution by comparing the camera projection with depth data. Secondly, we use retroreflective fiducial markers in the RGB-D calibration for improved accuracy and detectability. Finally, the repeating ICP refinement uses an exact region of interest such that we employ the precise depth measurements of the retroreflective surfaces only. The complete calibration software and a recorded dataset are publically available and open source.

Project description:Camera calibration is a crucial step for computer vision in many applications. For example, adequate calibration is required in infrared thermography inside gas turbines for blade temperature measurements, for associating each pixel with the corresponding point on the blade 3D model. The blade has to be used as the calibration frame, but it is always only partially visible, and thus, there are few control points. We propose and test a method that exploits the anisotropic uncertainty of the control points and improves the calibration in conditions where the number of control points is limited. Assuming a bivariate Gaussian 2D distribution of the position error of each control point, we set uncertainty areas of control points' position, which are ellipses (with specific axis lengths and rotations) within which the control points are supposed to be. We use these ellipses to set a weight matrix to be used in a weighted Direct Linear Transformation (wDLT). We present the mathematical formalism for this modified calibration algorithm, and we apply it to calibrate a camera from a picture of a well known object in different situations, comparing its performance to the standard DLT method, showing that the wDLT algorithm provides a more robust and precise solution. We finally discuss the quantitative improvements of the algorithm by varying the modules of random deviations in control points' positions and with partial occlusion of the object.

Project description:Description A holographic display combines artificial intelligence with partially coherent light sources to reduce speckle. Computer-generated holography (CGH) holds transformative potential for a wide range of applications, including direct-view, virtual and augmented reality, and automotive display systems. While research on holographic displays has recently made impressive progress, image quality and eye safety of holographic displays are fundamentally limited by the speckle introduced by coherent light sources. Here, we develop an approach to CGH using partially coherent sources. For this purpose, we devise a wave propagation model for partially coherent light that is demonstrated in conjunction with a camera-in-the-loop calibration strategy. We evaluate this algorithm using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and superluminescent LEDs (SLEDs) and demonstrate improved speckle characteristics of the resulting holograms compared with coherent lasers. SLEDs in particular are demonstrated to be promising light sources for holographic display applications, because of their potential to generate sharp and high-contrast two-dimensional (2D) and 3D images that are bright, eye safe, and almost free of speckle.

Project description:As a kind of forensic evidence, shoeprints have been treated as important as fingerprint and DNA evidence in forensic investigations. Shoeprint verification is used to determine whether two shoeprints could, or could not, have been made by the same shoe. Successful shoeprint verification has tremendous evidentiary value, and the result can link a suspect to a crime, or even link crime scenes to each other. In forensic practice, shoeprint verification is manually performed by forensic experts; however, it is too dependent on experts' experience. This is a meaningful and challenging problem, and there are few attempts to tackle it in the literatures. In this paper, we propose a multi-layer feature-based method to conduct shoeprint verification automatically. Firstly, we extracted multi-layer features; and then conducted multi-layer feature matching and calculated the total similarity score. Finally, we drew a verification conclusion according to the total similarity score. We conducted extensive experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method on two shoeprint datasets. Experimental results showed that the proposed method achieved good performance with an equal error rate (EER) of 3.2% on the MUES-SV1KR2R dataset and an EER of 10.9% on the MUES-SV2HS2S dataset.

Project description:Camera trapping and solicitation of wildlife images through citizen science have become common tools in ecological research. Such studies collect many wildlife images for which correct species classification is crucial; even low misclassification rates can result in erroneous estimation of the geographic range or habitat use of a species, potentially hindering conservation or management efforts. However, some species are difficult to tell apart, making species classification challenging-but the literature on classification agreement rates among experts remains sparse. Here, we measure agreement among experts in distinguishing between images of two similar congeneric species, bobcats (Lynx rufus) and Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis). We asked experts to classify the species in selected images to test whether the season, background habitat, time of day, and the visible features of each animal (e.g., face, legs, tail) affected agreement among experts about the species in each image. Overall, experts had moderate agreement (Fleiss' kappa = 0.64), but experts had varying levels of agreement depending on these image characteristics. Most images (71%) had ?1 expert classification of "unknown," and many images (39%) had some experts classify the image as "bobcat" while others classified it as "lynx." Further, experts were inconsistent even with themselves, changing their classifications of numerous images when they were asked to reclassify the same images months later. These results suggest that classification of images by a single expert is unreliable for similar-looking species. Most of the images did obtain a clear majority classification from the experts, although we emphasize that even majority classifications may be incorrect. We recommend that researchers using wildlife images consult multiple species experts to increase confidence in their image classifications of similar sympatric species. Still, when the presence of a species with similar sympatrics must be conclusive, physical or genetic evidence should be required.

Project description:IntroductionMathematical and computational modeling have a long history of uncovering mechanisms and making predictions for biological systems. However, to create a model that can provide relevant quantitative predictions, models must first be calibrated by recapitulating existing biological datasets from that system. Current calibration approaches may not be appropriate for complex biological models because: 1) many attempt to recapitulate only a single aspect of the experimental data (such as a median trend) or 2) Bayesian techniques require specification of parameter priors and likelihoods to experimental data that cannot always be confidently assigned. A new calibration protocol is needed to calibrate complex models when current approaches fall short.MethodsHerein, we develop CaliPro, an iterative, model-agnostic calibration protocol that utilizes parameter density estimation to refine parameter space and calibrate to temporal biological datasets. An important aspect of CaliPro is the user-defined pass set definition, which specifies how the model might successfully recapitulate experimental data. We define the appropriate settings to use CaliPro.ResultsWe illustrate the usefulness of CaliPro through four examples including predator-prey, infectious disease transmission, and immune response models. We show that CaliPro works well for both deterministic, continuous model structures as well as stochastic, discrete models and illustrate that CaliPro can work across diverse calibration goals.ConclusionsWe present CaliPro, a new method for calibrating complex biological models to a range of experimental outcomes. In addition to expediting calibration, CaliPro may be useful in already calibrated parameter spaces to target and isolate specific model behavior for further analysis.
