Cesium-containing triple cation perovskite solar cells: improved stability, reproducibility and high efficiency.

ABSTRACT: Today's best perovskite solar cells use a mixture of formamidinium and methylammonium as the monovalent cations. With the addition of inorganic cesium, the resulting triple cation perovskite compositions are thermally more stable, contain less phase impurities and are less sensitive to processing conditions. This enables more reproducible device performances to reach a stabilized power output of 21.1% and ?18% after 250 hours under operational conditions. These properties are key for the industrialization of perovskite photovoltaics.

Project description:Efficient and stable perovskite solar cells with a simple active layer are desirable for manufacturing. Three-dimensional perovskite solar cells are most efficient but need to have improved environmental stability. Inclusion of larger ammonium salts has led to a trade-off between improved stability and efficiency, which is attributed to the perovskite films containing a two-dimensional component. Here, we show that addition of 0.3 mole percent of a fluorinated lead salt into the three-dimensional methylammonium lead iodide perovskite enables low temperature fabrication of simple inverted solar cells with a maximum power conversion efficiency of 21.1%. The perovskite layer has no detectable two-dimensional component at salt concentrations of up to 5 mole percent. The high concentration of fluorinated material found at the film-air interface provides greater hydrophobicity, increased size and orientation of the surface perovskite crystals, and unencapsulated devices with increased stability to high humidity.

Potassium iodide reduces the stability of triple-cation perovskite solar cells.

Project description:The addition of alkali metal halides to hybrid perovskite materials can significantly impact their crystallisation and hence their performance when used in solar cell devices. Previous work on the use of potassium iodide (KI) in active layers to passivate defects in triple-cation mixed-halide perovskites has been shown to enhance their luminescence efficiency and reduce current-voltage hysteresis. However, the operational stability of KI passivated perovskite solar cells under ambient conditions remains largely unexplored. By investigating perovskite solar cell performance with SnO2 or TiO2 electron transport layers (ETL), we propose that defect passivation using KI is highly sensitive to the composition of the perovskite-ETL interface. We reconfirm findings from previous reports that KI preferentially interacts with bromide ions in mixed-halide perovskites, and - at concentrations >5 mol% in the precursor solution - modifies the primary absorber composition as well as leading to the phase segregation of an undesirable secondary non-perovskite phase (KBr) at high KI concentration. Importantly, by studying both material and device stability under continuous illumination and bias under ambient/high-humidity conditions, we show that this secondary phase becomes a favourable degradation product, and that devices incorporating KI have reduced stability.

Surface Passivation of Perovskite Solar Cells Toward Improved Efficiency and Stability.

Project description:The advancement of perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) technology toward commercialized promotion needs high efficiency and optimum stability. By introducing a small molecular material such as tetratetracontane (TTC, CH3(CH2)42CH3) at the fullerene (C60)/perovskite interface of planar p-i-n PVSCs, we significantly reduced the interfacial traps, thereby suppressing electron recombination and facilitating electron extraction. Consequently, an improved efficiency of 20.05% was achieved with a high fill factor of 79.4%, which is one of the best performances for small molecular-modified PVSCs. Moreover, the hydrophobic TTC successfully protects the perovskite film from water damage. As a result, we realized a better long-term stability that maintains 87% of the initial efficiency after continuous exposure for 200 h in air.

A novel natural scaffold layer improving efficiency, stability and reproducibility of Perovskite solar cells.

Project description:In this study, our hypothesis was to demonstrate the usability of a natural clay structure as scaffold layer in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Sepiolite, which is a natural and environmentally friendly clay structure, has a very high active surface area and can easily be dispersed in solvents. In addition we predicted that crystallization could easily occur on their surfaces due to their surface chemistry. In the study, we firstly used a natural clay as scaffold layer in PSCs. It is observed that, efficiency, reproducibility and stability of PSCs have been significantly improved. Improvements in efficiency have been observed to be between 30 and 50% depending on the type of perovskite solvent used. In addition, the surface chemistry of the sepiolite resulted in better crystallization as well as stability. Due to its high-water adsorption capability, sepiolite makes the perovskite crystal more stable by trapping the residual water molecules as well as penetrated water molecules from environment. Consequently, we demonstrated that, a natural, low-cost and environmentally friendly clay may be an alternative material which may contribute to the commercialization of PSCs.

Fully Spray-Coated Triple-Cation Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:We use ultrasonic spray-coating to sequentially deposit thin films of tin oxide, a triple-cation perovskite and spiro-OMeTAD, allowing us fabricate perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with a champion reverse scan power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.4% on small-area substrates. We show that the use of spray-deposition permits us to rapidly (>80 mm s-1) coat 25 mm × 75 mm substrates that were divided into a series of devices each with an active area of 15.4 mm2, yielding an average PCE of 10.3% and a peak PCE of 16.3%. By connecting seven 15.4 mm2 devices in parallel on a single substrate, we create a device having an effective active area of 1.08 cm2 and a PCE of 12.7%. This work demonstrates the possibility for spray-coating to fabricate high efficiency and low-cost perovskite solar cells at speed.

All-inorganic cesium lead iodide perovskite solar cells with stabilized efficiency beyond 15.

Project description:As the black cesium lead iodide (CsPbI3) tends to transit into a yellow ?-phase at ambient, it is imperative to develop a stabilized black phase for photovoltaic applications. Herein, we report a distorted black CsPbI3 film by exploiting the synergistic effect of hydroiodic acid (HI) and phenylethylammonium iodide (PEAI) additives. It is found that the HI induces formation of hydrogen lead iodide (HPbI3+x), an intermediate to the distorted black phase with appropriate band gap of 1.69?eV; while PEAI provides nucleation for optimized crystallization. More importantly, it stabilizes the distorted black phase by hindering phase transition via its steric effects. Upon optimization, we have attained solar cell efficiency as high as 15.07%. Specifically, the bare cell without any encapsulation shows negligible efficiency loss after 300?h of light soaking. The device keeps 92% of its initial cell efficiency after being stored for 2 months under ambient conditions.

Enhanced Moisture Stability by Butyldimethylsulfonium Cation in Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Many organic cations in halide perovskites have been studied for their application in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Most organic cations in PSCs are based on the protic nitrogen cores, which are susceptible to deprotonation. Here, a new candidate of fully alkylated sulfonium cation (butyldimethylsulfonium; BDMS) is designed and successfully assembled into PSCs with the aim of increasing humidity stability. The BDMS-based perovskites retain the structural and optical features of pristine perovskite, which results in the comparable photovoltaic performance. However, the fully alkylated aprotic nature of BDMS shows a much more pronounced effect on the increase in humidity stability, which emphasizes a generic electronic difference between protic ammonium and aprotic sulfonium cation. The current results would pave a new way to explore cations for the development of promising PSCs.

NiO <i><sub>x</sub></i> Hole Transport Layer for Perovskite Solar Cells with Improved Stability and Reproducibility.

Project description:In this study, highly stable, low-temperature-processed planar lead halide perovskite (MAPbI3-x Cl x ) solar cells with NiO x interfaces have been developed. Our solar cells maintain over 85% of the initial efficiency for more than 670 h, at the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) under 1 sun illumination (no UV-light filtering) at 30 °C, and over 73% of the initial efficiency for more than 1000 h, at the accelerating aging test (85 °C) under the same MPPT condition. Storing the encapsulated devices at 85 °C in dark over 1000 h revealed no performance degradation. The key factor for the prolonged lifetime of the devices was the sputter-deposited polycrystalline NiO x hole transport layer (HTL). We observed that the properties of NiO x are dependent on its composition. At a higher Ni3+/Ni2+ ratio, the conductivity of NiO x is higher, but at the expense of optical transmittance. We obtained the highest power conversion efficiency of 15.2% at the optimized NiO x condition. The sputtered NiO x films were used to fabricate solar cells without annealing or any other treatments. The device stability enhanced significantly compared to that of the devices with PEDOT:PSS HTL. We clearly demonstrated that the illumination-induced degradation depends heavily on the nature of the HTL in the inverted perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). The sputtered NiO x HTL can be a good candidate to solve stability problems in the lead halide PVSCs.

Interfacial Contact Passivation for Efficient and Stable Cesium-Formamidinium Double-Cation Lead Halide Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved extremely high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of over 25%, but practical application still requires further improvement in the long-term stability of the device. Herein, we present an in situ interfacial contact passivation strategy to reduce the interfacial defects and extraction losses between the hole transporting layer and perovskite. The existence of PbS promotes the crystallization of perovskite, passivates the interface and grain boundary defects, and reduces the nonradiation recombination, thereby leading to a champion PCE of 21.07% with reduced hysteresis, which is one of the best results for the methylammonium (MA)-free, cesium formamidinium double-cation lead-based PSCs. Moreover, the unencapsulated device retains more than 93% and 82% of its original efficiencies after 1 year's storage under ambient conditions and thermal aging at 85°C for 1,000 h in a nitrogen atmosphere, likely due to the usage of MA-free perovskite and the enhanced surface hydrophobicity.

Nanoscale Back Contact Perovskite Solar Cell Design for Improved Tandem Efficiency.

Project description:Tandem photovoltaics, combining absorber layers with two distinct band gap energies into a single device, provide a practical solution to reduce thermalization losses in solar energy conversion. Traditionally, tandem devices have been assembled using two-terminal (2-T) or four-terminal (4-T) configurations; the 2-T limits the tandem performance due to the series connection requiring current matching, while the standard 4-T configuration requires at least three transparent electrical contacts, which reduce the total collected power due to unavoidable parasitic absorption. Here, we introduce a novel architecture based on a nanoscale back-contact for a thin-film top cell in a three terminal (3-T) configuration. Using coupled optical-electrical modeling, we optimize this architecture for a planar perovskite-silicon tandem, highlighting the roles of nanoscale contacts to reduce the required perovskite electronic quality. For example, with an 18% planar silicon base cell, the 3-T back contact design can reach a 32.9% tandem efficiency with a 10 μm diffusion length perovskite material. Using the same perovskite quality, the 4-T and 2-T configurations only reach 30.2% and 24.8%, respectively. We also confirm that the same 3-T efficiency advantage applies when using 25% efficient textured silicon base cells, where the tandems reach 35.2% and 32.8% efficiency for the 3-T, and 4-T configurations, respectively. Furthermore, because our design is based on the individual subcells being back-contacted, further improvements can be readily made by optimizing the front surface, which is left free for additional antireflective coating, light trapping, surface passivation, and photoluminescence outcoupling enhancements.
