Structural and functional analysis of proteins involved in pre-mRNA splicing is challenging because of the complexity of the splicing machinery, known as the spliceosome. Bioinformatic, proteomic, and biochemical analyses have identified a minimal spliceosome in the red alga Cyanidioschyzon merolae.
