Bottom-up synthesis of chiral covalent organic frameworks and their bound capillaries for chiral separation.

ABSTRACT: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a novel class of porous materials, and offer great potential for various applications. However, the applications of COFs in chiral separation and chiral catalysis are largely underexplored due to the very limited chiral COFs available and their challenging synthesis. Here we show a bottom-up strategy to construct chiral COFs and an in situ growth approach to fabricate chiral COF-bound capillary columns for chiral gas chromatography. We incorporate the chiral centres into one of the organic ligands for the synthesis of the chiral COFs. We subsequently in situ prepare the COF-bound capillary columns. The prepared chiral COFs and their bound capillary columns give high resolution for the separation of enantiomers with excellent repeatability and reproducibility. The proposed strategy provides a promising platform for the synthesis of chiral COFs and their chiral separation application.

Chiral induction in covalent organic frameworks.

Project description:Synthetic control over chirality and function is the crowning achievement for metal-organic frameworks, but the same level of control has not been achieved for covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Here we demonstrate chiral COFs (CCOFs) can be crystallized from achiral organic precursors by chiral catalytic induction. A total of nine two-dimensional CCOFs are solvothermally prepared by imine condensations of the C3-symmetric 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) with diamine or triamine linkers in the presence of catalytic amount of (R)- or (S)-1-phenylethylamine. Homochirality of these CCOFs results from chiral catalyst-induced immobilization of threefold-symmetric tris(N-salicylideneamine) cores with a propeller-like conformation of one single handedness during crystallization. The CCOF-TpTab showed high enantioselectivity toward chiral carbohydrates in fluorescence quenching and, after postsynthetic modification of enaminone groups located in chiral channels with Cu(II) ions, it can also be utilized as a heterogeneous catalyst for the asymmetric Henry reaction of nitroalkane with aldehydes.

Hydrophobic covalent organic frameworks: a green synthesis approach for efficient oil/water separation.

Project description:Rapid economic development has led to oil pollution and energy shortage. Thus, it is highly desirable to develop an efficient and environment-friendly approach for oil/water (O/W) separation. Herein, we report a simple and green method for preparing macroscopic COF AG and AG. COF AG was rapidly synthesized at room temperature, washed and freeze-dried to prepare COF AG without any adhesives or additives. Due to its strong hydrophobicity, COF AG is used as an absorbent for removing organic pollutants in O/W separation, and has a certain demulsification performance, which has a certain application prospect in the field of O/W separation. The hydrophobic COF AG material was combined with MA, which was synthesized in one step at room temperature, avoiding the long reaction conditions of traditional high temperature and high-pressure reaction, as well as the post-modification process and complex washing steps. The superhydrophobic sponge material was rapidly prepared. The introduction of MA reduced the amount of COF monomer, improved the adsorption capacity of the material for organic solvents and oil samples, increased from 37 times of the previous maximum adsorption weight to more than 120 times, and the demulsification capacity of O/W emulsion increased to more than 99%, with the ability of direct separation and continuous separation of O/W. Therefore, the prepared superhydrophobic sponge has high adsorption capacity and good reusability, and can be used for O/W separation. This work not only provides a strategy for the construction of functional COF, but also opens up a way for the growth of COF on different carriers for O/W separation.

Charge-Enhanced Separation of Organic Pollutants in Water by Anionic Covalent Organic Frameworks.

Project description:The effective removal of organic pollutants in wastewater is a key environmental challenge. In this work, an anionic covalent organic framework (named TpPa-SO3Na) was synthesized through a green two-in-one synthesis strategy with autocatalytic imine formation. The slowly generated acetic acid as a catalyst is favorable to sustain the reversibility of the covalent organic framework (COF) formation reaction and improve the crystallinity of TpPa-SO3Na. TpPa-SO3Na consists of a homogeneous distribution of sulfonate groups to produce negatively charged regular channels. The strong electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding interactions between the sulfonate groups anchored in the nanochannels and the amine groups in organic pollutants improve the adsorption selectivity and capacity. These structures allow a high degree of control over adsorption processes to boost the adsorption kinetics and improve selective separation. TpPa-SO3Na exhibits ultrafast adsorption (<1 min) of cationic antibiotics and dyes (average over 95%). Furthermore, TpPa-SO3Na exhibits high selectivity for the uptake of dye molecules on the basis of the differences in charge and molecular size. This work explored functional designs and green manufacturing of anionic COFs for removal of hydrophilic organic pollutants.

Ionothermal Synthesis of Imide-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an extensively studied class of porous materials, which distinguish themselves from other porous polymers in their crystallinity and high degree of modularity, enabling a wide range of applications. COFs are most commonly synthesized solvothermally, which is often a time-consuming process and restricted to well-soluble precursor molecules. Synthesis of polyimide-linked COFs (PI-COFs) is further complicated by the poor reversibility of the ring-closing reaction under solvothermal conditions. Herein, we report the ionothermal synthesis of crystalline and porous PI-COFs in zinc chloride and eutectic salt mixtures. This synthesis does not require soluble precursors and the reaction time is significantly reduced as compared to standard solvothermal synthesis methods. In addition to applying the synthesis to previously reported imide COFs, a new perylene-based COF was also synthesized, which could not be obtained by the classical solvothermal route. In situ high-temperature XRPD analysis hints to the formation of precursor-salt adducts as crystalline intermediates, which then react with each other to form the COF.

On-surface synthesis of disilabenzene-bridged covalent organic frameworks.

Project description:Substituting carbon with silicon in organic molecules and materials has long been an attractive way to modify their electronic structure and properties. Silicon-doped graphene-based materials are known to exhibit exotic properties, yet conjugated organic materials with atomically precise Si substitution have remained difficult to prepare. Here we present the on-surface synthesis of one- and two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks whose backbones contain 1,4-disilabenzene (C4Si2) linkers. Silicon atoms were first deposited on a Au(111) surface, forming a AuSix film on annealing. The subsequent deposition and annealing of a bromo-substituted polyaromatic hydrocarbon precursor (triphenylene or pyrene) on this surface led to the formation of the C4Si2-bridged networks, which were characterized by a combination of high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy and photoelectron spectroscopy supported by density functional theory calculations. Each Si in a hexagonal C4Si2 ring was found to be covalently linked to one terminal Br atom. For the linear structure obtained with the pyrene-based precursor, the C4Si2 rings were converted into C4Si pentagonal siloles by further annealing.

Rapid synthesis of aminal-linked covalent organic frameworks for CO<sub>2</sub>/CH<sub>4</sub> separation.

Project description:As an emerging category of crystalline porous materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are primarily synthesized via solvothermal methods. However, achieving rapid synthesis of COFs through this approach poses a significant challenge. To address the issue of slow synthesis, we studied the crystallization process of aminal-linked COFs via the condensation of a cost-effective aldehyde and secondary amine, and successfully expedited the synthesis of COFs within a one-hour duration. Furthermore, gram-scale aminal-linked COFs with abundant ultra-microporous channels demonstrated promising potential for CO2/CH4 separation. This study enables the rapid synthesis of aminal-linked COFs from cheap raw materials, which lays a foundation for their practical applications.

Construction of chiral crown ethers in robust covalent organic frameworks for electrochromatographic enantioseparation.

Project description:Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) is a rapidly emerging separation technique that merges the high separation efficiency of capillary electrophoresis with the exceptional selectivity of liquid chromatography. However, it remains a synthetic challenge to design functional chiral stationary phases (CSPs) with high chemical stability against acid and base in CEC enantioseparation. Here we demonstrate that incorporating chiral crown ethers into stable covalent organic frameworks (COFs) enables efficient and stable separations of racemates by CEC. This facilitates the crafting of two three-dimensional (3D) chiral COFs by polycondensation of a chiral 1,1'-binaphyl-20-crown-6-derived dialdehyde and tetraamines with diisopropyl substituents. Both feature an 11-fold interpenetrated diamond framework, characterized by tubular open channels decorated with chiral crown ethers serving as enantioselective recognition and binding sites. These frameworks demonstrate excellent stability in water, acid and base, thanks to the presence of bulky isopropyl groups that shield the dynamic imine linkages. Moreover, the precisely defined COF channels enhanced the accessibility of the enclosed crown ethers to the analytes while providing strong protection against harsh environments, rendering them suitable for CSPs in CEC separations. They can effectively separate some important enantiomers, including ketones, epoxides and alkaline substances, when utilized as coatings on chiral columns, particularly facilitating the chiral separation of drugs. This study advances the application of COFs in electrochromatographic separations, expanding the scope of porous materials design and engineering to create COFs with targeted enantioselective properties.

Polyphosphonate covalent organic frameworks.

Project description:Herein, we report polyphosphonate covalent organic frameworks (COFs) constructed via P-O-P linkages. The materials are synthesized via a single-step condensation reaction of the charge-assisted hydrogen-bonded organic framework, which is constructed from phenylphosphonic acid and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis[p-phenylphosphonic acid]porphyrin and is formed by simply heating its hydrogen-bonded precursor without using chemical reagents. Above 210 °C, it becomes an amorphous microporous polymeric structure due to the oligomerization of P-O-P bonds, which could be shown by constant-time solid-state double-quantum 31P nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. The polyphosphonate COF exhibits good water and water vapor stability during the gas sorption measurements, and electrochemical stability in 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte in water. The reported family of COFs fills a significant gap in the literature by providing stable microporous COFs suitable for use in water and electrolytes. Additionally, we provide a sustainable synthesis route for the COF synthesis. The narrow pores of the COF effectively capture CO2.

Colloidal Covalent Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are two- or three-dimensional (2D or 3D) polymer networks with designed topology and chemical functionality, permanent porosity, and high surface areas. These features are potentially useful for a broad range of applications, including catalysis, optoelectronics, and energy storage devices. But current COF syntheses offer poor control over the material's morphology and final form, generally providing insoluble and unprocessable microcrystalline powder aggregates. COF polymerizations are often performed under conditions in which the monomers are only partially soluble in the reaction solvent, and this heterogeneity has hindered understanding of their polymerization or crystallization processes. Here we report homogeneous polymerization conditions for boronate ester-linked, 2D COFs that inhibit crystallite precipitation, resulting in stable colloidal suspensions of 2D COF nanoparticles. The hexagonal, layered structures of the colloids are confirmed by small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering, and kinetic characterization provides insight into the growth process. The colloid size is modulated by solvent conditions, and the technique is demonstrated for four 2D boronate ester-linked COFs. The diameter of individual COF nanoparticles in solution is monitored and quantified during COF growth and stabilization at elevated temperature using in situ variable-temperature liquid cell transmission electron microscopy imaging, a new characterization technique that complements conventional bulk scattering techniques. Solution casting of the colloids yields a free-standing transparent COF film with retained crystallinity and porosity, as well as preferential crystallite orientation. Collectively this structural control provides new opportunities for understanding COF formation and designing morphologies for device applications.

Reconstructed covalent organic frameworks.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are distinguished from other organic polymers by their crystallinity1-3, but it remains challenging to obtain robust, highly crystalline COFs because the framework-forming reactions are poorly reversible4,5. More reversible chemistry can improve crystallinity6-9, but this typically yields COFs with poor physicochemical stability and limited application scope5. Here we report a general and scalable protocol to prepare robust, highly crystalline imine COFs, based on an unexpected framework reconstruction. In contrast to standard approaches in which monomers are initially randomly aligned, our method involves the pre-organization of monomers using a reversible and removable covalent tether, followed by confined polymerization. This reconstruction route produces reconstructed COFs with greatly enhanced crystallinity and much higher porosity by means of a simple vacuum-free synthetic procedure. The increased crystallinity in the reconstructed COFs improves charge carrier transport, leading to sacrificial photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rates of up to 27.98 mmol h-1 g-1. This nanoconfinement-assisted reconstruction strategy is a step towards programming function in organic materials through atomistic structural control.
