Direct accumulation pathway of radioactive cesium to fruit-bodies of edible mushroom from contaminated wood logs.

ABSTRACT: This paper presents the accumulation process of radioactive Cs in edible mushrooms. We here first report the direct accumulation pathway of radioactive Cs from contaminated wood logs to the fruit-bodies of shiitake mushrooms through the basal portion of the stipe. In this pathway, radioactive Cs is not transported through the hyphae. This pathway results in a high accumulation of radioactive Cs in the fruit-body, more by the excess accumulation of radioactive Cs from the wood logs than that through the hyphae. We grew the fruit-bodies of Shiitake mushroom from radioactive-Cs-contaminated wood logs. The spatial distributions of radioactive Cs and Prussian blue as a tracer of interstitial water in the cross section of the wood log measured after the harvest of the fruit-body from the inoculated sawdust spawn area indicated that some fraction of the radioactive Cs and Prussian blue were transported directly to the basal portion of the stipe during the growth of the fruit-bodies.

Project description:BackgroundStable cesium (133Cs) naturally exists in the environment whereas recently deposited radionuclides (e.g., 137Cs) are not at equilibrium. Stable cesium has been used to understand the long-term behavior of radionuclides in plants, trees and mushrooms. We are interested in using 133Cs to predict the future transfer factor (TF) of radiocesium from contaminated logs to shiitake mushrooms in Eastern Japan. However, the current methodology to obtain a representative wood sample for 133Cs analysis involves mechanically breaking and milling the entire log (excluding bark) to a powder prior to analysis. In the current study, we investigated if sawdust obtained from cutting a log along its length at eight points is as robust but a faster alternative to provide a representative wood sample to determine the TF of 133Cs between logs and shiitake.MethodsOak logs with ready-to-harvest shiitake fruiting bodies were cut into nine 10-cm discs and each disc was separated into bark, sapwood and heartwood and the concentration of 133Cs was measured in the bark, sapwood, heartwood, sawdust (generated from cutting each disc) and fruiting bodies (collected separately from each disc), and the wood-to-shiitake TF was calculated.ResultsWe found that the sawdust-to-shiitake TF of 133Cs did not differ (P = 0.223) compared to either the sapwood-to-shiitake TF or heartwood-to-shiitake TF, but bark did have a higher concentration of 133Cs (P < 0.05) compared to sapwood and heartwood. Stable cesium concentration in sawdust and fruiting bodies collected along the length of the logs did not differ (P > 0.05).DiscussionSawdust can be used as an alternative to determine the log-to-shiitake TF of 133Cs. To satisfy the goals of different studies and professionals, we have described two sampling methodologies (Methods I and II) in this paper. In Method I, a composite of eight sawdust samples collected from a log can be used to provide a representative whole-log sample (i.e., wood and bark), whereas Method II allows for the simultaneous sampling of two sets of sawdust samples-one set representing the whole log and the other representing wood only. Both methodologies can greatly reduce the time required for sample collection and preparation.

Project description:Following the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011, even the municipal solid waste (MSW) and sewage sludge (SS) in northeastern Japan became contaminated by radioactive nuclides such as 137Cs and 134Cs. To understand the state of radioactive cesium (r-Cs) in the incineration residues of the municipal wastes, research groups studied the concentration and the chemical form of r-Cs in the residues, as well as its water-leaching behavior. In the present study, we conducted thermodynamic equilibrium calculations to estimate the possible chemical forms of r-Cs in the incineration residues. Thermodynamic data for cesium oxides and aluminosilicates were collected and compiled into a new database to perform equilibrium calculations for systems that include Cs. The calculation results suggested that Cs (radiocesium and stable cesium) in municipal solid waste was transformed into gaseous CsCl or crystalline aluminosilicate at incineration temperatures and, when a molten aluminosilicate phase (i.e., slag phase) was generated, a proportion of the Cs species was dissolved into the slag phase. In the case of sewage sludge, Cs was calculated to be transformed mostly into crystalline aluminosilicate at incineration temperatures, whereas by analogy with the behaviors of Na and K, Ca,Cs-phosphate double salts were also potential incineration products. These results could account for the high leaching rates of r-Cs from the MSW incineration fly ash and the low leaching rates from the MSW incineration bottom ash and SS incineration fly ash reported in earlier studies. In the case of dewatered SS that included a large amount of slaked lime as a flocculant, it was exceptionally difficult for the calculation to represent the fate of Cs, and we needed to include the contribution of silica sand in a fluidized-bed combustor in the equilibrium calculation to represent the low leaching rates of alkali species from the dewatered SS fly ash. From the results of the thermodynamic equilibrium calculations and also from the calculated standard Gibbs energy of cesium aluminosilicate formation/decomposition reactions, the effects of waste composition and incineration temperature on the fate of Cs were examined: High incineration temperature and large amounts of Ca and Cl in the waste composition increased the fraction of gaseous CsCl in the furnace and thus resulted in the high distribution ratios of Cs in the fly ash of MSW and the high leaching rates of Cs from the fly ash.
