Methylpalladium complexes with pyrimidine-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene ligands.

ABSTRACT: A series of methylpalladium(II) complexes with pyrimidine-NHC ligands carrying different aryl- and alkyl substituents R ([((pym)^(NHC-R))Pd(II)(CH3)X] with X = Cl, CF3COO, CH3) has been prepared by transmetalation reactions from the corresponding silver complexes and chloro(methyl)(cyclooctadiene)palladium(II). The dimethyl(1-(2-pyrimidyl)-3-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene)palladium(II) complex was synthesized via the free carbene route. All complexes were fully characterized by standard methods and in three cases also by a solid state structure.

Synthesis and Biological Studies on Dinuclear Gold(I) Complexes with Di-(N-Heterocyclic Carbene) Ligands Functionalized with Carbohydrates.

Project description:The design of novel metal complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands that display biological activity is an active research field in organometallic chemistry. One of the possible approaches consists of the use of NHC ligands functionalized with a carbohydrate moiety. Two novel Au(I)-Au(I) dinuclear complexes were synthesized; they present a neutral structure with one bridging diNHC ligand, having one or both heterocyclic rings decorated with a carbohydrate functionality. With the symmetric diNHC ligand, the dicationic dinuclear complex bearing two bridging diNHC ligands was also synthesized. The study was completed by analyzing the antiproliferative properties of these complexes, which were compared to the activity displayed by similar mononuclear Au(I) complexes and by the analogous bimetallic Au(I)-Au(I) complex not functionalized with carbohydrates.

Conformations of N-heterocyclic carbene ligands in ruthenium complexes relevant to olefin metathesis.

Project description:The structure of ruthenium-based olefin metathesis catalyst 3 and model pi-complex 5 in solution and in the solid state are reported. The N-tolyl ligands, due to their lower symmetry than the traditional N-mesityl substituents, complicate this analysis, but ultimately provide explanation for the enhanced reactivity of 3 relative to standard catalyst 2. The tilt of the N-tolyl ring provides additional space near the ruthenium center, which is consistent with the enhanced reactivity of 3 toward sterically demanding substrates. Due to this tilt, the more sterically accessible face bears the two methyl substituents of the N-aryl rings. These experimental studies are supported by computational studies of these complexes by DFT. The experimental data provides a means to validate the accuracy of the B3LYP and M06 functionals. B3LYP provides geometries that match X-ray crystal structural data more closely, though it leads to slightly less (approximately 0.5 kcal mol-1) accuracy than M06 most likely because it underestimates attractive noncovalent interactions.

Gold(I) Complexes Stabilized by Nine- and Ten-Membered N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands.

Project description:Nine- and ten-membered N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been developed and for the first time their gold(I) complexes were synthesized. The protonated NHC pro-ligands 2?a-h were prepared by the reaction of readily available N,N'-diarylformamidines with bis-electrophilic building blocks, followed by anion exchange. In situ deprotonation of the tetrafluoroborates 2?a-h with tBuOK in the presence of AuCl(SMe2 ) provided fast access to NHC-gold(I) complexes 3-10. These new NHC-gold(I) complexes show very good catalytic activity in a cycloisomerization reaction (0.1?mol?% catalyst loading, up to 100?% conversion) and their solid-state structures reveal high steric hindrance around the metal atom (%Vbur up to 53.0) which is caused by their expanded-ring architecture.

Dinuclear Nickel Complexes of Thiolate-Functionalized Carbene Ligands and Their Electrochemical Properties.

Project description:Four dimeric nickel(II) complexes [Ni2Cl2(BnC2S)2] [1], [Ni2Cl2(BnC3S)2] [2], [Ni2(PyC2S)2]Br2 [3]Br2, and [Ni2(PyC3S)2]Br2 [4]Br2 of four different thiolate-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands were synthesized, and their structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The four ligands differ by the alkyl chain length between the thiolate group and the benzimidazole nitrogen (two -C2- or three -C3- carbon atoms) and the second functionality at the NHC being a benzyl (Bn) or a pyridylmethyl (Py) group. The nickel(II) ions are coordinated to the NHC carbon atom and the pendent thiolate group, which bridges to the second nickel(II) ion creating the dinuclear structure. Additionally, in compounds [1] and [2], the fourth coordination position of the square-planar Ni(II) centers is occupied by the halide ions, whereas in [3]2+ and [4]2+, the additional pendant pyridylmethyl groups complete the coordination spheres of the nickel ions. The electrochemical properties of the four complexes were studied using cyclic voltammetry and controlled-potential coulometry methods. The thiolate-functionalized carbene complexes [1] and [2] appear to be poor electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction; the complexes [3]Br2 and [4]Br2, bearing an extra pyridylmethyl group, show higher catalytic activity in proton reduction, indicating that the pyridine group plays an important role in the catalytic cycle.

Mercury(II) Complexes of Anionic N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands: Steric Effects of the Backbone Substituent.

Project description:Mercury(II) complexes (Me-maloNHCDipp)HgCl (1b), (t-Bu-maloNHCDipp)HgCl (2b) and (t-Bu-maloNHCDipp)HgMe (2c) supported by anionic N-heterocyclic carbenes have been obtained in good yields from the reaction of the potassium salt of N-heterocyclic carbene ligand precursors and mercury(II) salts, HgCl2 and MeHgI. These molecules have been characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. X-ray crystal structures of 1b and 2b are also presented. Interestingly, complex 1b is polymeric {(Me-maloNHCDipp)HgCl}n in the solid state, as a result of inter-molecular Hg-O contacts, and features rare three coordinate mercury sites with a T-shaped arrangement, whereas the (t-Bu-maloNHCDipp)HgCl (2b) is monomeric and has a linear, two-coordinate mercury center. The formation of T-shaped structure and the aggregation of complex 1b is attributable to the reduced steric demand of the N-heterocyclic carbene ligand backbone substituent.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Adducts of Alkynyl Functionalized 1,3,2-Dithioborolanes.

Project description:Alkynyl functionalized boron compounds are versatile intermediates in the areas of medicinal chemistry, materials science, and optical materials. In particular, alkynyl boronate esters [R1-C≡C-B(OR2)2] are of interest since they provide reactivity at both the alkyne entity, with retention of the B-C bond or alkyne transfer to electrophilic substrates with scission of the latter. The boron atom is commonly well stabilized due to (i) the extraordinary strength of two B-O bonds, and (ii) the chelate effect exerted by a bifunctional alcohol. We reasoned that the replacement of a B-O for a B-S bond would lead to higher reactivity and post-functionalization in the resulting alkynyl boronate thioesters [R1-C≡C-B(S2X)]. Access to this poorly investigated class of compounds starts form chloro dithioborolane cyclo-Cl-B(S2C2H4) as a representative example. Whereas syntheses of three coordinate alkynyl boronate thioesters [R1-C≡C-B(S2X)] proved to be ineffective, the reactions of NHC-adducts (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) of cyclo-Cl-B(S2C2H4) afforded the alkyne substituted thioboronate esters in good yield. The products NHC-B(S2C2H4)(C≡C-R1) are remarkably stable towards water and air, which suggests their use as boron-based building blocks for applications akin to oxygen-based boronate esters.

Luminescent platinum(II) complexes with functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene or diphosphine selectively probe mismatched and abasic DNA.

Project description:The selective targeting of mismatched DNA overexpressed in cancer cells is an appealing strategy in designing cancer diagnosis and therapy protocols. Few luminescent probes that specifically detect intracellular mismatched DNA have been reported. Here we used Pt(II) complexes with luminescence sensitive to subtle changes in the local environment and report several Pt(II) complexes that selectively bind to and identify DNA mismatches. We evaluated the complexes' DNA-binding characteristics by ultraviolet/visible absorption titration, isothermal titration calorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations. These Pt(II) complexes show up to 15-fold higher emission intensities upon binding to mismatched DNA over matched DNA and can be utilized for both detecting DNA abasic sites and identifying cancer cells and human tissue samples with different levels of mismatch repair. Our work highlights the potential of luminescent Pt(II) complexes to differentiate between normal cells and cancer cells which generally possess more aberrant DNA structures.

Luminescent Iridium(III) Complexes Supported by N-Heterocyclic Carbene-based C^C^C-Pincer Ligands and Aromatic Diimines.

Project description:Iridium(III) hydrido complexes containing N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based pincer ligand 1,3-bis(1-butylimidazolin-2-ylidene)phenyl anion (C(1)^C^C(1)) or 1,3-bis(3-butylbenzimidazolin-2-ylidene)phenyl anion (C(2)^C^C(2)) and aromatic diimine (2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (Me2bpy), or dipyrido-[3,2-f:2',3'-h]-quinoxaline (dpq)) in the form of [Ir(C^C^C)(N^N)(H)](+) have been prepared. Crystal structures for these complexes show that the Ir-CNHC distances are 2.043(5)-2.056(5) Å. The hydride chemical shifts for complexes bearing C(1)^C^C(1) (-20.6 to -20.3 ppm) are more upfield than those with C(2)^C^C(2) (-19.5 and -19.2 ppm), revealing that C(1)^C^C(1) is a better electron donor than C(2)^C^C(2). Spectroscopic comparisons and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations suggest that the lowest-energy electronic transition associated with these complexes (λ = 340-530 nm (ε ≤ 10(3) dm(3) mol(-1) cm(-1))) originate from a dπ(Ir(III)) → π*(N^N) metal-to-ligand charge transfer transition, where the dπ(Ir(III)) level contain significant contribution from the C^C^C ligands. All these complexes are emissive in the yellow-spectral region (553-604 nm in CH3CN and CH2Cl2) upon photo-excitation with quantum yields of 10(-3)-10(-1).

Linear and T-Shaped Iron(I) Complexes Supported by N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands: Synthesis and Structure Characterization.

Project description:The use of the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands 1,3-bis(2',6'-diethylphenyl)-4,5-(CH2)4-imidazol-2-ylidene (cyIDep), 1,3-bis(2',6'-diethylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene (sIDep), and its N-mesityl analogue sIMes enables the preparation of the two-coordinate homoleptic iron(I)-NHC complexes [(cyIDep)2Fe][BAr(F)4] (3, Ar(F) denoted for 3,5-di(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) and [(sIDep)2Fe][BAr(F)4] (4) and the T-shaped iron(I)-NHC complex [(sIMes)2Fe(THF)][BPh4] (5, THF = tetrahydrofuran). Complexes 3-5 were prepared via the sequential protocol of control reduction of iron(II) dihalides by KC8 in the presence of the corresponding NHC ligands followed by halide-abstraction with NaBAr4. Spectroscopic characterization, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and (57)Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, in combination with density functional theory calculations, suggest their high-spin nature. Solution property study (absorption spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry) indicates that 3 and 5 keep their corresponding two- and three-coordinate nature in THF solution, and 4 might reversibly coordinate a THF molecule to form, presumably, the T-shaped species [(sIDep)2Fe(THF)][BAr(F)4]. The isolation of 3 and 4 demonstrates the accessibility of homoleptic two-coordinate iron(I)-NHC complexes.

Carbenaporphyrins: No Longer Missing Ligands in N-Heterocyclic Carbene Chemistry.

Project description:The synthesis of an NHC-containing porphyrinoid ligand is presented. The formally antiaromatic 20??e- macrocyclic framework can be obtained via a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition ("click-reaction") to form two triazole moieties which were alkylated to the respective triazolium macrocycle. Deprotonation of the ligand precursor with lithium bases to the respective dilithio carbenaporphyrin complex and transmetallation to scandium lead to complexes that exhibit orange fluorescence. Optical property combined with TD-DFT studies verify an aromatic character for each heterocyclic moiety rather than an antiaromatic macrocycle in the ligand precursor as well as in the complexes. While the geometric features of the carbenaporphyrin ligand strongly resemble those of porphyrin, DFT calculations reveal a stronger electron-donating ability of the new ligand.
