Ammonia intercalated flower-like MoS2 nanosheet film as electrocatalyst for high efficient and stable hydrogen evolution.

ABSTRACT: Ammonia intercalated flower-like MoS2 electrocatalyst film assembled by vertical orientated ultrathin nanosheet on graphite sheethas been successfully synthesized using one-step hydrothermal method. In this strategy, ammonia can effectively insert into the parallel plane of the MoS2 nanosheets, leading to the expansion of lattice and phase transfer from 2H to 1T, generating more active unsaturated sulfur atoms. The flower-like ammoniated MoS2 electrocatalysts with more active sites and large surface area exhibited excellent HER activity with a small Tafel slope and low onset overpotential, resulting a great enhancement in hydrogen evolution. The high efficient activity and recyclable utilization, as well as large-scale, indicate that it is a very promising electrocatalyst to replace Pt in industry application.

Nickel-Doped Silver Sulfide: An Efficient Air-Stable Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution from Neutral Water.

Project description:A low-cost, platinum-free electrocatalyst for hydrogen (H2) generation via the water splitting reaction holds great promise to meet the demand of clean and sustainable energy sources. Recent studies are mainly concerned with semiconducting materials like sulfides, selenides, and phosphides of different transition metals as electrocatalysts. Doping of the transition metals within the host matrix is a good strategy to improve the electrocatalytic activity of the host material. However, this activity largely depends on the nature of the dopant metal and its host matrix as well. To exploit this idea, here, in the present work, we have synthesized semiconducting Ag2S nanoparticles and successfully doped them with different transition metals like Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni to study their electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction from neutral water (pH = 7). Among the systems doped with these transition metals, the Ni-doped Ag2S (Ni-Ag2S) system shows a very low overpotential (50 mV) with high catalytic current in neutral water. The trend in electrocatalytic activity of different transition metals has also been explained. The Ni-Ag2S system also shows very good stability in ambient atmosphere over a long period of time and suffers no catalytic degradation in the presence of oxygen. Structural characterizations are carried out using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy to establish the phase purity and morphology of the materials.

Project description:The data presented in this article are related to the research article entitled "NiCoPt/Graphene-dot Nanosponge as a Highly Stable Electrocatalyst for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Acidic Electrolyte (N.-A. Nguyen et al., 2020) [1]. This article reports a simple method to synthesize NiCoPt/Graphene-dot as an electrocatalyst with low Pt loading but high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. The morphology of NiCoPt/Graphene-dot was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) techniques. The structural and chemical properties of NiCoPt/Graphene-dot were investigated by using X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques.

Nitrogen-plasma treated hafnium oxyhydroxide as an efficient acid-stable electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions.

Project description:Development of earth-abundant electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions in strong acids represents a great challenge for developing high efficiency, durable, and cost effective electrolyzers and fuel cells. We report herein that hafnium oxyhydroxide with incorporated nitrogen by treatment using an atmospheric nitrogen plasma demonstrates high catalytic activity and stability for both hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions in strong acidic media using earth-abundant materials. The observed properties are especially important for unitized regenerative fuel cells using polymer electrolyte membranes. Our results indicate that nitrogen-modified hafnium oxyhydroxide could be a true alternative for platinum as an active and stable electrocatalyst, and furthermore that nitrogen plasma treatment may be useful in activating other non-conductive materials to form new active electrocatalysts.

Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution over Hydrothermally Synthesized Re-Doped MoS2 Flower-Like Microspheres.

Project description:In this research, we report a simple hydrothermal synthesis to prepare rhenium (Re)- doped MoS2 flower-like microspheres and the tuning of their structural, electronic, and electrocatalytic properties by modulating the insertion of Re. The obtained compounds were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Structural, morphological, and chemical analyses confirmed the synthesis of poorly crystalline Re-doped MoS2 flower-like microspheres composed of few stacked layers. They exhibit enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance with low overpotential of 210 mV at current density of 10 mA/cm2, with a small Tafel slope of 78 mV/dec. The enhanced catalytic HER performance can be ascribed to activation of MoS2 basal planes and by reduction in charge transfer resistance during HER upon doping.

MoS2 nanosheets direct supported on reduced graphene oxide: An advanced electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction.

Project description:Molybdenum disulfide nanosheets/reduced graphene oxide (MoS2 NSs/rGO) nanohybrid as a highly effective catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have been successfully synthesized by a facile microwave-assisted method. The results clearly reveal that direct grown of MoS2 NSs on rGO have been achieved. Electrochemical tests show that the as-prepared hybrid material exhibited excellent HER activity, with a small Tafel slope of 57 mV dec-1, an overpotential of 130 mV and remarkable cycling stability. After analysis, the observed outstanding catalytic performance can be attributed to the uniform distribution of the MoS2 NSs, which are characterized by the presence of multiple active sites as well as the effective electron transport route provided by the conductive rGO substrate. Moreover, according to the classic theory, the mechanism governing of the catalytic HER on the MoS2 NSs/rGO nanohybrid has been clarified.

Nickel Hydr(oxy)oxide Nanoparticles on Metallic MoS2 Nanosheets: A Synergistic Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-based materials have been recently identified as promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, little work has been done to improve the catalytic performance of MoS2 toward HER in alkaline electrolytes, which is more suitable for water splitting in large-scale applications. Here, it is reported that the hybridization of 0D nickel hydr(oxy)oxide nanoparticles with 2D metallic MoS2 nanosheets can significantly enhance the HER activities in alkaline and neutral electrolytes. Impressively, the optimized hybrid catalyst can drive a cathodic current density of 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of ≈73 mV for HER in 1 m KOH, about 185 mV smaller than the original MoS2. The improved HER activity is attributed to a bifunctional mechanism adopted in these hybrid catalysts, in which nickel hydr(oxy)oxide promotes the water adsorption and dissociation to supply protons for subsequent reactions occurred on MoS2 to generate H2.

Red Mud as an Efficient, Stable, and Cost-Free Catalyst for COx-Free Hydrogen Production from Ammonia.

Project description:Red mud, one of the mostly produced industrial wastes, was converted into a catalyst with exceptionally high and stable performance for hydrogen production from ammonia. Results showed that iron species produced after reduction of the HCl digested red mud were converted into ?-Fe2N during the induction period of ammonia decomposition reaction at 700?°C. The catalytic performance measurements indicated that the modified red mud catalyst provides a record high hydrogen production rate for a non-noble metal catalyst at this temperature. For instance, stable hydrogen production rates were measured as 72 and 196?mmol H2 min(-1) gcat(-1) for the corresponding space velocities of 72 000 and 240 000?cm(3) NH3 h(-1) gcat(-1), respectively, at 700?°C. These results offer opportunities to utilize one of the key hazardous industrial wastes as an eco-friendly, efficient, stable, and almost cost-free catalyst for COx-free hydrogen production from ammonia decomposition.

Nitrogen-Doped Bismuth Nanosheet as an Efficient Electrocatalyst to CO2 Reduction for Production of Formate

Project description:Electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) to produce high value-added chemicals or fuels is a promising technology to address the greenhouse effect and energy challenges. Formate is a desirable product of CO2RR with great economic value. Here, nitrogen-doped bismuth nanosheets (N-BiNSs) were prepared by a facile one-step method. The N-BiNSs were used as efficient electrocatalysts for CO2RR with selective formate production. The N-BiNSs exhibited a high formate Faradic efficiency (FEformate) of 95.25% at −0.95 V (vs. RHE) with a stable current density of 33.63 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M KHCO3. Moreover, the N-BiNSs for CO2RR yielded a large current density (300 mA cm−2) for formate production in a flow-cell measurement, achieving the commercial requirement. The FEformate of 90% can maintain stability for 14 h of electrolysis. Nitrogen doping could induce charge transfer from the N atom to the Bi atom, thus modulating the electronic structure of N-Bi nanosheets. DFT results demonstrated the N-BiNSs reduced the adsorption energy of the *OCHO intermediate and promoted the mass transfer of charges, thereby improving the CO2RR with high FEformate. This study provides a valuable strategy to enhance the catalytic performance of bismuth-based catalysts for CO2RR by using a nitrogen-doping strategy.

Bulk layered heterojunction as an efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution.

Project description:We describe the spontaneous formation of composite chalcogenide materials that consist of two-dimensional (2D) materials dispersed in bulk and their unusual charge transport properties for application in hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). When MoS2 as a representative 2D material is deposited on transition metals (such as Cu) in a controlled manner, the sulfidation reactions also occur with the metal. This process results in remarkably unique structures, that is, bulk layered heterojunctions (BLHJs) of Cu-Mo-S that contain MoS2 flakes inside, which are uniformly dispersed in the Cu2S matrix. The resulting structures were expected to induce asymmetric charge transfer via layered frameworks and tested as electrocatalysts for HERs. Upon suitable thermal treatments, the BLHJ surfaces exhibited the efficient HER performance of approximately 10 mA/cm2 at a potential of -0.1 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode. The Tafel slope was approximately 30 to 40 mV per decade. The present strategy was further generalized by demonstrating the formation of BLHJs on other transition metals, such as Ni. The resulting BLHJs of Ni-Mo-S also showed the remarkable HER performance and the stable operation over 10 days without using Pt counter electrodes by eliminating any possible issues on the Pt contamination.

Paper-Cut Flexible Multifunctional Electronics Using MoS2 Nanosheet.

Project description:Art and science represent human creativity and rational thinking, respectively. When the two seemingly opposite fields are intertwined, there is always a life-changing spark. In particular, the integration of ancient traditional Chinese art into the latest electronic devices is always been an unexcavated topic. Fabricating two-dimensional material with a tensile strain less than 3% with an ultimate global stretch has been an important problem that plagues the current flexible electronics field. The current research is limited to material in small scale, and it is always necessary to develop and extend large-sized flexible electronic systems. Here, inspired by the traditional Chinese paper-cut structure, we present a highly deformable multifunctional electronic system based on the MoS2 nanosheet. In this work, we first demonstrate how the traditional paper-cut structure can open the view of flexible electronics. In order to obtain a large area of MoS2 with excellent performance, we use a metal-assisted exfoliation method to transfer MoS2, followed by fabricating a field effect transistor to characterize its excellent electrical properties. Two photodetectors and a temperature sensor are produced with good performance. The mechanical simulation proves that the structure has more advantages in stretchability than other typical paper-cut structures. From the experimental and mechanical point of view, it is proved that the device can work stably under high deformation. We finally show that the device has broad application prospects in highly deformed organs, tissues, and joints. These findings set a good example of traditional Chinese culture to guide innovation in the field of electronic devices.
