Generating Light from Upper Excited Triplet States: A Contribution to the Indirect Singlet Yield of a Polymer OLED, Helping to Exceed the 25% Singlet Exciton Limit.

ABSTRACT: The mechanisms by which light is generated in an organic light emitting diode have slowly been elucidated over the last ten years. The role of triplet annihilation has demonstrated how the "spin statistical limit" can be surpassed, but it cannot account for all light produced in the most efficient devices. Here, a further mechanism is demonstrated by which upper excited triplet states can also contribute to indirect singlet production and delayed fluorescence. Since in a device the population of these T_N states is large, this indirect radiative decay channel can contribute a sizeable fraction of the total emission measured from a device. The role of intra- and interchain charge transfer states is critical in underpinning this mechanism.

Multiphoton excited singlet/triplet mixed self-trapped exciton emission.

Project description:Multiphoton excited luminescence is of paramount importance in the field of optical detection and biological photonics. Self-trapped exciton (STE) emission with self-absorption-free advantages provide a choice for multiphoton excited luminescence. Herein, multiphoton excited singlet/triplet mixed STE emission with a large full width at half-maximum (617 meV) and Stokes shift (1.29 eV) has been demonstrated in single-crystalline ZnO nanocrystals. Temperature dependent steady state, transient state and time-resolved electron spin resonance spectra demonstrate a mixture of singlet (63%) and triplet (37%) mixed STE emission, which contributes to a high photoluminescence quantum yield (60.5%). First-principles calculations suggest 48.34 meV energy per exciton stored by phonons in the distorted lattice of excited states, and 58 meV singlet-triplet splitting energy for the nanocrystals being consistent with the experimental measurements. The model clarifies long and controversial debates on ZnO emission in visible region, and the multiphoton excited singlet/triplet mixed STE emission is also observed.

Promoting Singlet/triplet Exciton Transformation in Organic Optoelectronic Molecules: Role of Excited State Transition Configuration.

Project description:Exciton transformation, a non-radiative process in changing the spin multiplicity of an exciton usually between singlet and triplet forms, has received much attention recently due to its crucial effects in manipulating optoelectronic properties for various applications. However, current understanding of exciton transformation mechanism does not extend far beyond a thermal equilibrium of two states with different multiplicity and it is a significant challenge to probe what exactly control the transformation between the highly active excited states. Here, based on the recent developments of three types of purely organic molecules capable of efficient spin-flipping, we perform ab initio structure/energy optimization and similarity/overlap extent analysis to theoretically explore the critical factors in controlling the transformation process of the excited states. The results suggest that the states having close energy levels and similar exciton characteristics with same transition configurations and high heteroatom participation are prone to facilitating exciton transformation. A basic guideline towards the molecular design of purely organic materials with facile exciton transformation ability is also proposed. Our discovery highlights systematically the critical importance of vertical transition configuration of excited states in promoting the singlet/triplet exciton transformation, making a key step forward in excited state tuning of purely organic optoelectronic materials.

Delayed fluorescence from inverted singlet and triplet excited states.

Project description:Hund's multiplicity rule states that a higher spin state has a lower energy for a given electronic configuration1. Rephrasing this rule for molecular excited states predicts a positive energy gap between spin-singlet and spin-triplet excited states, as has been consistent with numerous experimental observations over almost a century. Here we report a fluorescent molecule that disobeys Hund's rule and has a negative singlet-triplet energy gap of -11 ± 2 meV. The energy inversion of the singlet and triplet excited states results in delayed fluorescence with short time constants of 0.2 μs, which anomalously decrease with decreasing temperature owing to the emissive singlet character of the lowest-energy excited state. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using this molecule exhibited a fast transient electroluminescence decay with a peak external quantum efficiency of 17%, demonstrating its potential implications for optoelectronic devices, including displays, lighting and lasers.

Inverting singlet and triplet excited states using strong light-matter coupling.

Project description:In organic microcavities, hybrid light-matter states can form with energies that differ from the bare molecular excitation energies by nearly 1 eV. A timely question, given the recent advances in the development of thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials, is whether strong light-matter coupling can be used to invert the ordering of singlet and triplet states and, in addition, enhance reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) rates. Here, we demonstrate a complete inversion of the singlet lower polariton and triplet excited states. We also unambiguously measure the RISC rate in strongly coupled organic microcavities and find that, regardless of the large energy level shifts, it is unchanged compared to films of the bare molecules. This observation is a consequence of slow RISC to the lower polariton due to the delocalized nature of the state across many molecules and an inability to compete with RISC to the dark exciton reservoir.

Identification of a triplet pair intermediate in singlet exciton fission in solution.

Project description:Singlet exciton fission is the spin-conserving transformation of one spin-singlet exciton into two spin-triplet excitons. This exciton multiplication mechanism offers an attractive route to solar cells that circumvent the single-junction Shockley-Queisser limit. Most theoretical descriptions of singlet fission invoke an intermediate state of a pair of spin-triplet excitons coupled into an overall spin-singlet configuration, but such a state has never been optically observed. In solution, we show that the dynamics of fission are diffusion limited and enable the isolation of an intermediate species. In concentrated solutions of bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)[TIPS]--tetracene we find rapid (<100 ps) formation of excimers and a slower (? 10 ns) break up of the excimer to two triplet exciton-bearing free molecules. These excimers are spectroscopically distinct from singlet and triplet excitons, yet possess both singlet and triplet characteristics, enabling identification as a triplet pair state. We find that this triplet pair state is significantly stabilized relative to free triplet excitons, and that it plays a critical role in the efficient endothermic singlet fission process.

Opposite Anisotropy Effects of Singlet and Triplet Exciton Diffusion in Tetracene Crystal.

Project description:We observe the diffusion anisotropy difference between singlet and triplet excitons in organic crystals; that is, singlet and triplet excitons may have completely different spatial direction preference for diffusion. This phenomenon can be ascribed to the distinct dependence of different excitonic couplings (Coulomb Förster vs. exchange Dexter) existing in singlet and triplet excitons on their intermolecular distance and intermolecular orientation. Such a discovery provides insights for understanding the fundamental photophysical process in a vast range of organic condensed-phase systems and optimizing the efficiency of organic optoelectronic materials.

Project description:The controlled delocalization of molecular excitons remains an important goal towards the application of organic chromophores in processes ranging from light-initiated chemical transformations to classical and quantum information processing. In this study, we present a methodology to couple optical and magnetic spectroscopic techniques and assess the delocalization of singlet and triplet excitons in model molecular chromophores. By comparing the steady-state and time-resolved optical spectra of Zn-porphyrin monomers and weakly coupled dimers, we show that we can use the identity of substituents bound at specific positions of the macromolecules' rings to control the inter-ring delocalization of singlet excitons stemming from their B states through acetylene bridges. While broadened steady-state absorption spectra suggest the presence of delocalized B state excitons in mesityl-substituted Zn-tetraphenyl porphyrin dimers (Zn2U-D), we confirm this conclusion by measuring an enhanced ultrafast non-radiative relaxation from these inter-ring excitonic states to lower lying electronic states relative to their monomer. In contrast to the delocalized nature of singlet excitons, we use time-resolved EPR and ENDOR spectroscopies to show that the triplet states of the Zn-porphyrin dimers remain localized on one of the two macrocyclic sub-units. We use the analysis of EPR and ENDOR measurements on unmetallated model porphyrin monomers and dimers to support this conclusion. The results of DFT calculations also support the interpretation of localized triplet states. These results demonstrate researchers cannot conclude triplet excitons delocalize in macromolecular based on the presence of spatially extended singlet excitons, which can help in the design of chromophores for application in spin conversion and information processing technologies.

Efficient electroluminescent hybridized local and charge-transfer host materials with small singlet-triplet splitting to enhance exciton utilization efficiency: excited state transition configuration.

Project description:A series of efficient electroluminescent materials with dual carrier transport properties shows enhanced singlet exciton utilization (η s) due to small singlet-triplet splitting (ΔE ST). The strong orbital-coupling transitions of N-(4-(1-(1-(2,3-dihydrobenzo[b][1,4]dioxin-6-yl)-4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)naphthalen-4-yl)phenyl)-N-phenyl benzenamine (DDPB) exhibit deep blue emission at 435 nm (CIEy, 0.07) with an external quantum efficiency of 2.01%. The electroluminescent efficiencies of 2-(1-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)naphthalen-4-yl)-1-(2,3-dihydrobenzo[b][1,4]dioxin-6-yl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (CDDPI) (L - 3992 cd m-2; η ex - 3.01%; η c - 2.56 cd A-1; η p - 2.12 lm W-1) are higher than those of the N-(4-(1-(1-(2,3-dihydrobenzo[b][1,4]dioxin-6-yl)-H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole-2-yl)naphthalen-4-yl)phenyl)-N-phenylbenzenamine (DBDPA) based device (L - 3015 cd m-2; η ex - 2.85%; η c - 2.01 cd A-1; η p - 1.92 lm W-1). The blue emissive materials CDDPI and DBDPA are used as a host to construct green and red phosphorescent OLEDs: the green device based on CDDPI:Ir(ppy)3 exhibits higher efficiencies (L - 8812 cd m-2; η ex - 19.0%; η c - 27.5 cd A-1; η p - 33.0 lm W-1) at 2.7 V and the red device based on CDDPI:Ir(MQ)2(acac) exhibits a maximum luminance of 39 661 cd m-2 with excellent EL efficiencies [η ex - 19.2%; η c - 27.9 cd A-1; η p - 29.2 lm W-1; CIE (0.64, 0.34)] compared with those of the DBDPA:Ir(MQ)2(acac) based device [L - 37 621 cd m-2; η ex - 18.5%; η c - 25.2 cd A-1; η p - 25.8 lm W-1; CIE (0.64, 0.34)].

Direct population of triplet excited states through singlet-triplet transition for visible-light excitable organic afterglow.

Project description:Invoking efficient afterglow in metal-free organic molecules represents an important material advancement. However, organic afterglow suffers from low intensity and efficiency and generally needs to be excited by UV light owing to its spin-forbidden phosphorescent nature that essentially requires facile intersystem crossing (ISC). Here, we propose a strategy to bypass the traditional ISC through facilitating singlet-triplet transition to directly populate triplet excited states from the ground state by combining synergetic effects of both heavy/hetero-atom incorporation and aromatic aggregation. Verified by systematic experimental and computational investigations, this unique singlet-to-triplet absorption results in a much improved organic afterglow quantum efficiency up to 9.5% with a prolonged lifetime of 0.25 s under visible-light irradiation. Fundamentally, this work illustrates for the first time the great potential of the direct population method to red-shift the excitation wavelength and improve the afterglow efficiency, offering important clues for the development of triplet-state involved organic optoelectronic technologies.

Enhancement of triplet-sensitized upconversion in rigid polymers via singlet exciton sink approach.

Project description:To increase the practical usefulness of solid-state sensitized upconversion (UC) materials as components of solar energy harvesting systems, it is important to identify and suppress loss mechanisms, and increase the UC quantum yield (? UC). Here we focus on a benchmark UC system consisting of the emitter 9,10-diphenylanthracene (DPA) and the sensitizer platinum octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP) in a rigid poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix, and show that one of the major losses originates from Förster resonant energy transfer (FRET) from DPA back to PtOEP. Even though DPA emission lies within the PtOEP transparency window, the quantitative assessment of singlet exciton diffusion for samples with a high DPA content evidences that long-range FRET results in effective exciton trapping by PtOEP. A dramatic factor-of-6 reduction of the DPA emission quantum yield occurs even at PtOEP concentrations as low as 0.05 wt%. To alleviate this problem, we demonstrate a new concept based on the introduction of highly emissive sink sites to trap the singlet excitons produced upon annihilation prior to their quenching by the sensitizer. For DPA/PtOEP blends in PMMA, 1,6-bis-[2,5-di(dodecyloxyphenyl)ethynyl]pyrene is shown to be a useful sink, which results in 1.5-fold increase of the ? UC. A maximum ? UC of 2.7% was achieved, which is among the highest reported values for rigid sensitized UC polymers.
