Nonlinear metamaterials for holography.

ABSTRACT: A hologram is an optical element storing phase and possibly amplitude information enabling the reconstruction of a three-dimensional image of an object by illumination and scattering of a coherent beam of light, and the image is generated at the same wavelength as the input laser beam. In recent years, it was shown that information can be stored in nanometric antennas giving rise to ultrathin components. Here we demonstrate nonlinear multilayer metamaterial holograms. A background free image is formed at a new frequency-the third harmonic of the illuminating beam. Using e-beam lithography of multilayer plasmonic nanoantennas, we fabricate polarization-sensitive nonlinear elements such as blazed gratings, lenses and other computer-generated holograms. These holograms are analysed and prospects for future device applications are discussed.

Spin and wavelength multiplexed nonlinear metasurface holography.

Project description:Metasurfaces, as the ultrathin version of metamaterials, have caught growing attention due to their superior capability in controlling the phase, amplitude and polarization states of light. Among various types of metasurfaces, geometric metasurface that encodes a geometric or Pancharatnam-Berry phase into the orientation angle of the constituent meta-atoms has shown great potential in controlling light in both linear and nonlinear optical regimes. The robust and dispersionless nature of the geometric phase simplifies the wave manipulation tremendously. Benefitting from the continuous phase control, metasurface holography has exhibited advantages over conventional depth controlled holography with discretized phase levels. Here we report on spin and wavelength multiplexed nonlinear metasurface holography, which allows construction of multiple target holographic images carried independently by the fundamental and harmonic generation waves of different spins. The nonlinear holograms provide independent, nondispersive and crosstalk-free post-selective channels for holographic multiplexing and multidimensional optical data storages, anti-counterfeiting, and optical encryption.

Nonlinear vectorial holography with quad-atom metasurfaces.

Project description:Vectorial optical holography represents a solution to control the polarization and amplitude distribution of light in the Fourier space. While vectorial optical holography has been experimentally demonstrated in the linear optical regime, its nonlinear counterpart, which can provide extra degrees of freedom of light-field manipulation through the frequency conversion processes, remains unexplored. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the nonlinear vectorial holography through the second harmonic generation process on a quad-atom plasmonic metasurface. The quad-atom metasurface consists of gold meta-atoms with threefold rotational symmetry. Based on the concept of nonlinear geometric phase, we can simultaneously manipulate the phase and amplitude of the left and right circularly polarized second harmonic waves generated from the quad-atom metasurface. By superposing the two orthogonal polarization components, the quad-atom metasurface can produce nonlinear holographic images with vectorial polarization distributions. The proposed metasurface platform may have important applications in vectorial polarization nonlinear optical source, high-capacity optical information storage, and optical encryption.

Nonlinear terahertz devices utilizing semiconducting plasmonic metamaterials.

Project description:The development of responsive metamaterials has enabled the realization of compact tunable photonic devices capable of manipulating the amplitude, polarization, wave vector and frequency of light. Integration of semiconductors into the active regions of metallic resonators is a proven approach for creating nonlinear metamaterials through optoelectronic control of the semiconductor carrier density. Metal-free subwavelength resonant semiconductor structures offer an alternative approach to create dynamic metamaterials. We present InAs plasmonic disk arrays as a viable resonant metamaterial at terahertz frequencies. Importantly, InAs plasmonic disks exhibit a strong nonlinear response arising from electric field-induced intervalley scattering, resulting in a reduced carrier mobility thereby damping the plasmonic response. We demonstrate nonlinear perfect absorbers configured as either optical limiters or saturable absorbers, including flexible nonlinear absorbers achieved by transferring the disks to polyimide films. Nonlinear plasmonic metamaterials show potential for use in ultrafast terahertz (THz) optics and for passive protection of sensitive electromagnetic devices.

Ultra-low and ultra-broad-band nonlinear acoustic metamaterials.

Project description:Linear acoustic metamaterials (LAMs) are widely used to manipulate sound; however, it is challenging to obtain bandgaps with a generalized width (ratio of the bandgap width to its start frequency) >1 through linear mechanisms. Here we adopt both theoretical and experimental approaches to describe the nonlinear chaotic mechanism in both one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear acoustic metamaterials (NAMs). This mechanism enables NAMs to reduce wave transmissions by as much as 20-40?dB in an ultra-low and ultra-broad band that consists of bandgaps and chaotic bands. With subwavelength cells, the generalized width reaches 21 in a 1D NAM and it goes up to 39 in a 2D NAM, which overcomes the bandwidth limit for wave suppression in current LAMs. This work enables further progress in elucidating the dynamics of NAMs and opens new avenues in double-ultra acoustic manipulation.

Direct generation of spatially entangled qudits using quantum nonlinear optical holography.

Project description:Nonlinear holography shapes the amplitude and phase of generated new harmonics using nonlinear processes. Classical nonlinear holography influenced many fields in optics, from information storage, demultiplexing of spatial information, and all-optical control of accelerating beams. Here, we extend the concept of nonlinear holography to the quantum regime. We directly shape the spatial quantum correlations of entangled photon pairs in two-dimensional patterned nonlinear photonic crystals using spontaneous parametric down conversion, without any pump shaping. The generated signal-idler pair obeys a parity conservation law that is governed by the nonlinear crystal. Furthermore, the quantum states exhibit quantum correlations and violate the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality, thus enabling entanglement-based quantum key distribution. Our demonstration paves the way for controllable on-chip quantum optics schemes using the high-dimensional spatial degree of freedom.

Geometric charges and nonlinear elasticity of two-dimensional elastic metamaterials.

Project description:Problems of flexible mechanical metamaterials, and highly deformable porous solids in general, are rich and complex due to their nonlinear mechanics and the presence of nontrivial geometrical effects. While numeric approaches are successful, analytic tools and conceptual frameworks are largely lacking. Using an analogy with electrostatics, and building on recent developments in a nonlinear geometric formulation of elasticity, we develop a formalism that maps the two-dimensional (2D) elastic problem into that of nonlinear interaction of elastic charges. This approach offers an intuitive conceptual framework, qualitatively explaining the linear response, the onset of mechanical instability, and aspects of the postinstability state. Apart from intuition, the formalism also quantitatively reproduces full numeric simulations of several prototypical 2D structures. Possible applications of the tools developed in this work for the study of ordered and disordered 2D porous elastic metamaterials are discussed.

Tunable mechanical diode of nonlinear elastic metamaterials induced by imperfect interface.

Project description:In this investigation, the non-reciprocal transmission in a nonlinear elastic metamaterial with imperfect interfaces is studied. Based on the Bloch theorem and stiffness matrix method, the band gaps and transmission coefficients with imperfect interfaces are obtained for the fundamental and double frequency cases. The interfacial influences on the transmission behaviour are discussed for both the nonlinear phononic crystal and elastic metamaterial. Numerical results for the imperfect interface structure are compared with those for the perfect one. Furthermore, experiments are performed to support the theoretical analysis. The present research is expected to be helpful to design tunable devices with the non-reciprocal transmission and diode behaviour of the elastic metamaterial.

Quasi-phase-matching-division multiplexing holography in a three-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal.

Project description:Nonlinear holography has recently emerged as a novel tool to reconstruct the encoded information at a new wavelength, which has important applications in optical display and optical encryption. However, this scheme still struggles with low conversion efficiency and ineffective multiplexing. In this work, we demonstrate a quasi-phase-matching (QPM) -division multiplexing holography in a three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear photonic crystal (NPC). 3D NPC works as a nonlinear hologram, in which multiple images are distributed into different Ewald spheres in reciprocal space. The reciprocal vectors locating in a given Ewald sphere are capable of fulfilling the complete QPM conditions for the high-efficiency reconstruction of the target image at the second-harmonic (SH) wave. One can easily switch the reconstructed SH images by changing the QPM condition. The multiplexing capacity is scalable with the period number of 3D NPC. Our work provides a promising strategy to achieve highly efficient nonlinear multiplexing holography for high-security and high-density storage of optical information.

Wide-band negative permeability of nonlinear metamaterials.

Project description:We propose a novel way to achieve an exceptionally wide frequency range where metamaterial possesses negative effective permeability. This can be achieved by employing a nonlinear response of metamaterials. We demonstrate that, with an appropriate design, a frequency band exceeding 100% is available for a range of signal amplitudes. Our proposal provides a significant improvement over the linear approach, opening a road towards broadband negative refraction and its applications.

New avenues for phase matching in nonlinear hyperbolic metamaterials.

Project description:Nonlinear optical processes, which are of paramount importance in science and technology, involve the generation of new frequencies. This requires phase matching to avoid that light generated at different positions interferes destructively. Of the two original approaches to achieve this, one relies on birefringence in optical crystals, and is therefore limited by the dispersion of naturally occurring materials, whereas the other, quasi-phase-matching, requires direct modulation of material properties, which is not universally possible. To overcome these limitations, we propose to exploit the unique dispersion afforded by hyperbolic metamaterials, where the refractive index can be arbitrarily large. We systematically analyse the ensuing opportunities and demonstrate that hyperbolic phase matching can be achieved with a wide range of material parameters, offering access to the use of nonlinear media for which phase matching cannot be achieved by other means. With the rapid development in the fabrication of hyperbolic metamaterials, our approach is destined to bring significant advantages over conventional techniques for the phase matching of a variety of nonlinear processes.
