Luminescent graphene quantum dots fabricated by pulsed laser synthesis.

ABSTRACT: Graphene has been the subject of intense research in recent years due to its unique electrical, optical and mechanical properties. Furthermore, it is expected that quantum dots of graphene would make their way into devices due to their structure and composition which unify graphene and quantum dots properties. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are planar nano flakes with a few atomic layers thick and with a higher surface-to-volume ratio than spherical carbon dots (CDs) of the same size. We have developed a pulsed laser synthesis (PLS) method for the synthesis of GQDs that are soluble in water, measure 2-6 nm across, and are about 1-3 layers thick. They show strong intrinsic fluorescence in the visible region. The source of fluorescence can be attributed to various factors, such as: quantum confinement, zigzag edge structure, and surface defects. Confocal microscopy images of bacteria exposed to GQDs show their suitability as biomarkers and nano-probes in high contrast bioimaging.

Laser wavelength modulated pulsed laser ablation for selective and efficient production of graphene quantum dots.

Project description:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) can be used in different applications such as optoelectronic and biomedical applications, respectively. Hence, the selective synthesis of GQDs and GOQDs is highly desirable but challenging. Here, we present GQDs and GOQDs selectively prepared by an easy and simple pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) method by controlling the laser wavelength. The obtained GQDs and GOQDs showed a significantly different optoelectronic nature mainly due to the existence of surface oxygen-rich functional groups (e.g. carboxyl or hydroxy groups). Also, we described a possible mechanism for the formation of oxygen functional groups during the PLAL process based on the Coulomb explosion model, which can give further insight for designing functional carbon materials.

Ultrasensitive Detection of Fe<sup>3+</sup> Ions Using Functionalized Graphene Quantum Dots Fabricated by a One-Step Pulsed Laser Ablation Process.

Project description:With respect to the detection of Fe3+ ions, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have limitations for commercialization owing to their high limit of detection (LOD). Here, we report a one-step pulsed laser ablation (PLA) process to fabricate amino-functionalized GQDs (FGQDs) for the efficient detection of Fe3+ using polypyrrole (PPy) both as a precursor (amine N) and as a surfactant and also using graphite as a carbon precursor. Using this method, the amine N groups were easily incorporated into the carbon network of the GQDs. Additionally, compared to pristine GQDs, FGQDs showed smaller particle sizes and narrower size distributions owing to the surface passivation effects of the PPy surfactant. Due to the synergistic effect of surface passivation and incorporation of amine N groups, FGQDs exhibited a sensitive response to Fe3+ ions in the concentration range of 500 nM to 50 μM, which is lower than the quality standards for Fe3+ ions (∼5.36 μM) as suggested by the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, the processing time for synthesizing FGQDs by the PLA process was less than 30 min, thus allowing successful practical applications of GQDs in the sensing field.

Synthesis of Luminescent Graphene Quantum Dots with High Quantum Yield and Their Toxicity Study.

Project description:High fluorescence quantum yield graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have showed up as a new generation for bioimaging. In this work, luminescent GQDs were prepared by an ameliorative photo-Fenton reaction and a subsequent hydrothermal process using graphene oxide sheets as the precursor. The as-prepared GQDs were nanomaterials with size ranging from 2.3 to 6.4 nm and emitted intense green luminescence in water. The fluorescence quantum yield was as high as 24.6% (excited at 340 nm) and the fluorescence was strongest at pH 7. Moreover, the influences of low-concentration (12.5, 25 μg/mL) GQDs on the morphology, viability, membrane integrity, internal cellular reactive oxygen species level and mortality of HeLa cells were relatively weak, and the in vitro imaging demonstrated GQDs were mainly in the cytoplasm region. More strikingly, zebrafish embryos were co-cultured with GQDs for in vivo imaging, and the results of heart rate test showed the intake of small amounts of GQDs brought little harm to the cardiovascular of zebrafish. GQDs with high quantum yield and strong photoluminescence show good biocompatibility, thus they show good promising for cell imaging, biolabeling and other biomedical applications.

Influence of luminescent graphene quantum dots on trypsin activity.

Project description:Protein-graphene interactions have the potential to play a pivotal role in the future directions of nanomedicine. These interactions lead to diverse processes such as generation of protein coronas, nano-bio interfaces, particle wrapping, and biocatalytic processes that could determine the ultimate fate of graphene nanocomposites in biologic systems. However, such interactions and their effects on the bioavailability of graphene have not yet been widely appreciated, despite the fact that this is the primary surface in contact with cells.This paper reports on the integrative physiochemical interaction between trypsin and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) to determine their potential biologic identity in enzyme engineering. This interaction was measured by a wide range of analytical methods.Definitive binding and modulation of trypsin-GQDs was demonstrated for the first time by use of vibrational spectroscopy and wetting transparency, which revealed that trypsin was absorbed on GQDs' surface through its cationic and hydrophilic residues. Our findings suggested that trypsin's active sites were stabilized and protected by the GQDs, which were likely to be responsible for the high bioavailability of GQDs in enzymes.Our work demonstrates the efficacy of GQDs as an enzyme modulator with high specificity, and their great application potential in enzyme engineering as well as enzyme-based therapies.

Novel Synthesis of Slightly Fluorinated Graphene Quantum Dots with Luminescent and Paramagnetic Properties through Thermal Cutting of Fluorinated Graphene.

Project description:A novel approach has been developed to synthesize slightly fluorinated graphene quantum dots (GQDs-F) through thermal cutting of highly fluorinated graphene. The fluorinated graphene with substantial structure defects is fragile and is readily attacked. The direct evaporation of abundant CFn (n = 2, 3) groups near structure defects lead to the loss of adjacent skelton C atoms, and the fluorinated graphene can be thermally cut into GQDs-F with a relatively uniform nanosize in pyrolysis at 810 K. The GQDs-F with a low F/C atomic ratio of ca. 0.03 exhibit excitation wavelength-dependent properties with multicolor photoluminescence (PL) from blue to green. At the same time, F adatoms that are most likely located at the edges of GQDs-F have a high efficiency of introducing paramagnetic centres, and GQDs-F show a strong paramagnetism because of sp³-type defects and magnetic zigzag edges. The graphene quantum dots with such multimodal capabilities should have great applied value in material science.

Highly luminescent polyethylene glycol-passivated graphene quantum dots for light emitting diodes.

Project description:The emergence of fluorescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs) is expected to enhance the usefulness of quantum dots (QDs), in terms of their unique luminescence, photostability, low toxicity, chemical resistance, and electron transport properties. Here we prepared blue-photoluminescent polyethylene glycol GQDs (PEG-GQDs) through PEG surface passivation. The photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY) of PEG-GQDs with 320 nm excitation was about 4.9%, which was higher than that of pure GQDs. The as-fabricated PEG-GQDs with high QY were then used as light-emitting diode (PGQD-LED) emitters, in which the GQDs were incorporated into polymeric host layers in a multilayer electroluminescent device; blue emission with a luminance exceeding 800 cd m-2 was achieved, thus demonstrating the potential of PEG-GQDs as emitters in electroluminescence applications. Furthermore, the fluorescence mechanism of PEG-GQDs was investigated and proved that the origin of strong fluorescence of PEG-GQDs is associated with the luminescence from intrinsic states. The highly fluorescent PEG-GQDs will allow new devices, such as multicolor LEDs, to be developed with extraordinary properties, by tailoring the intrinsic and extrinsic states.

Graphene Quantum Dots with Blue and Yellow Luminescence Fabricated by Modulating Intercalation State.

Project description:The development of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) with low toxicity, excellent dispersibility, and high photostability has led to extensive progress in bio-imaging and optical sensing applications. However, one-pot synthesis and mass production of GQDs, and tuning their photoluminescence, remains a challenge. Here we demonstrate a simple and scalable method for fabricating GQDs with high size uniformity and chemical stability, via a sequential process of inserting alkali metal into graphite (Stage I: KC8 and Stage II: KC24) and exfoliation to GQDs in a selected solvent. Structural and optical measurements were conducted, and the emitted colors of the as-prepared GQDs were blue (KC8) and yellow (KC24), respectively. The stage of graphite intercalation in the compounds played an important role in the size and thickness of the GQD. The as-prepared GQDs had clear characteristic peaks consistent with the quantum confinement effect and intrinsic/extrinsic states. Our approach will provide great potential for a wide variety of bioimaging and bioanalysis applications.

Flexible and Highly Sensitive Strain Sensor Based on Laser-Induced Graphene Pattern Fabricated by 355 nm Pulsed Laser.

Project description:A laser-induced-graphene (LIG) pattern fabricated using a 355 nm pulsed laser was applied to a strain sensor. Structural analysis and functional evaluation of the LIG strain sensor were performed by Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging, and electrical-mechanical coupled testing. The electrical characteristics of the sensor with respect to laser fluence and focal length were evaluated. The sensor responded sensitively to small deformations, had a high gauge factor of ~160, and underwent mechanical fracture at 30% tensile strain. In addition, we have applied the LIG sensor, which has high sensitivity, a simple manufacturing process, and good durability, to human finger motion monitoring.

Formation mechanism and optimization of highly luminescent N-doped graphene quantum dots.

Project description:Photoluminescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have received enormous attention because of their unique chemical, electronic and optical properties. Here a series of GQDs were synthesized under hydrothermal processes in order to investigate the formation process and optical properties of N-doped GQDs. Citric acid (CA) was used as a carbon precursor and self-assembled into sheet structure in a basic condition and formed N-free GQD graphite framework through intermolecular dehydrolysis reaction. N-doped GQDs were prepared using a series of N-containing bases such as urea. Detailed structural and property studies demonstrated the formation mechanism of N-doped GQDs for tunable optical emissions. Hydrothermal conditions promote formation of amide between -NH? and -COOH with the presence of amine in the reaction. The intramoleculur dehydrolysis between neighbour amide and COOH groups led to formation of pyrrolic N in the graphene framework. Further, the pyrrolic N transformed to graphite N under hydrothermal conditions. N-doping results in a great improvement of PL quantum yield (QY) of GQDs. By optimized reaction conditions, the highest PL QY (94%) of N-doped GQDs was obtained using CA as a carbon source and ethylene diamine as a N source. The obtained N-doped GQDs exhibit an excitation-independent blue emission with single exponential lifetime decay.
