Project description:Hierarchical structured porous NiMn2O4 microspheres assembled with nanorods are synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method followed by calcination in air. As anode materials for lithium ion batteries (LIBs), the NiMn2O4 microspheres exhibit a high specific capacity. The initial discharge capacity is 1126 mA h g-1. After 1000 cycles, the NiMn2O4 demonstrates a reversible capacity of 900 mA h g-1 at a current density of 500 mA g-1. In particular, the porous NiMn2O4 microspheres still could deliver a remarkable discharge capacity of 490 mA h g-1 even at a high current density of 2 A g-1, indicating their potential application in Li-ion batteries. This excellent electrochemical performance is ascribed to the unique hierarchical porous structure which can provide sufficient contact for the transfer of Li+ ion and area for the volume change of the electrolyte leading to enhanced Li+ mobility.

Project description:2-D transition metal carbides (TMCs)-based anode materials offer competitive performance in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its excellent conductivity; cheaper, flexible uses; and superior mechanical stability. However, the electrochemical energy storage of TMCs is still the major obstacle due to their modest capacity and the trends of restacking/aggregation. In this report, the Mo2C nanosheets were attached on conductive CNT network to form a hierarchical 2D hybrid structure, which not only alleviated the aggregation of the Mo2C nanoparticle and facilitated the rapid transference of ion/electron, but also adapted effectually to the hefty volume expansion of Mo2C nanosheets and prevented restacking/collapse of Mo2C structure. Benefitting from the layered Mo2@CNT hybrid structure, the charge/discharge profile produced a 200 mAh g-1 discharge-specific capacity (second cycle) and 132 mAh g-1 reversible-discharge discharge-specific capacity (after 100 cycles) at 50 mA g-1 current density, with high-speed competency and superior cycle stability. The improved storage kinetics for Mo2@CNT hybrid structure are credited to the creation of numerous active catalytic facets and association reaction between the CNT and Mo2C, promoting the efficient electron transfer and enhancing the cycling stability.

Project description:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a critical reaction in secondary batteries based on alkali metal chemistries. The nonaqueous electrolyte mediates ion and oxygen transport and determines the heterogeneous charge transfer rates by controlling the nature and degree of solvation. This study shows that the solvent reorganization energy (λ) correlates well with the oxygen diffusion coefficient [Formula: see text] and with the ORR rate constant [Formula: see text] in nonaqueous Li-, Na-, and K-O2 cells, thereby elucidating the impact of variations in the solvation shell on the ORR. Increasing cation size (from Li+ to K+) doubled [Formula: see text], indicating an increased sensitivity of k to the choice of anion, while variations in [Formula: see text]were minimal over this cation size range. At the level of a symmetric K-O2 cell, both the formation of solvent-separated ion pairs [K+-(DMSO)n-ClO4 - + (DMSO)m-ClO4 -] and the anions being unsolvated (in case of PF6 -) lowered ORR activation barriers with a 200-mV lower overpotential for the PF6 - and ClO4 - electrolytes compared with OTf- and TFSI- electrolytes with partial anion solvation [predominantly K+-(DMSO)n-OTf-]. Balancing transport and kinetic requirements, KPF6 in DMSO is identified as a promising electrolyte for K-O2 batteries.

Project description:Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) hold tremendous promise for clean and efficient energy storage with the merits of high theoretical energy density and environmental friendliness. However, the performance of practical ZABs is still unsatisfactory because of the inevitably decreased activity of electrocatalysts when assembly into a thick electrode with high mass loading. Herein, we report a hierarchical electrocatalyst based on carbon microtube@nanotube core-shell nanostructure (CMT@CNT), which demonstrates superior electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction with a small potential gap of 0.678 V. Remarkably, when being employed as air-cathode in ZAB, the CMT@CNT presents an excellent performance with a high power density (160.6 mW cm-2), specific capacity (781.7 mAhg Zn -1 ) as well as long cycle stability (117 h, 351 cycles). Moreover, the ZAB performance of CMT@CNT is maintained well even under high mass loading (3 mg cm-2, three times as much as traditional usage), which could afford high power density and energy density for advanced electronic equipment. We believe that this work is promising for the rational design of hierarchical structured electrocatalysts for advanced metal-air batteries.

Project description:Germanium is an outstanding anode material in terms of electrochemical performance, especially rate capability, but its developments are hindered by its high price because it is rare in the crust of earth, and its huge volume variation during the lithium insertion and extraction. Introducing other cheaper elements into the germanium-based material is an efficient way to dilute the high price, but normally sacrifice its electrochemical performance. By the combination of nanostructure design and cheap element (calcium) introduction, urchin-like Ca2Ge7O16 hierarchical hollow microspheres have been successfully developed in order to reduce the price and maintain the good electrochemical properties of germanium-based material. The electrochemical test results in different electrolytes show that ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate/diethyl carbonate (3/4/3 by volume) with 5 wt% fluoroethylene carbonate additive is the most suitable solvent for the electrolyte. From the electrochemical evaluation, the as-synthesized Ca2Ge7O16 hollow microspheres exhibit high reversible specific capacity of up to 804.6 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1) after 100 cycles and remarkable rate capability of 341.3 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 4 A g(-1). The growth mechanism is proposed based on our experimental results on the growth process.

Project description:Herein, we introduce a simple method to prepare hierarchical graphene with a tunable pore structure by activating graphene oxide (GO) with a two-step thermal annealing process. First, GO was treated at 600 °C by rapid thermal annealing in air, followed by subsequent thermal annealing in N2. The prepared graphene powder comprised abundant slit nanopores and micropores, showing a large specific surface area of 653.2 m2/g with a microporous surface area of 367.2 m2/g under optimized conditions. The pore structure was easily tunable by controlling the oxidation degree of GO and by the second annealing process. When the graphene powder was used as the supercapacitor electrode, a specific capacitance of 372.1 F/g was achieved at 0.5 A/g in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte, which is a significantly enhanced value compared to that obtained using activated carbon and commercial reduced GO. The performance of the supercapacitor was highly stable, showing 103.8% retention of specific capacitance after 10,000 cycles at 10 A/g. The influence of pore structure on the supercapacitor performance was systematically investigated by varying the ratio of micro- and external surface areas of graphene.

Project description:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) incorporated porous 3-dimensional (3D) CuS microspheres have been successfully synthesized via a simple refluxing method assisted by PVP. The composites are composed of flower-shaped CuS secondary microspheres, which in turn are assembled with primary nanosheets of 15-30?nm in thickness and fully integrated with CNT. The composites possess a large specific surface area of 189.6?m(2) g(-1) and a high conductivity of 0.471?S cm(-1). As electrode materials for supercapacitors, the nanocomposites show excellent cyclability and rate capability and deliver an average reversible capacitance as high as 1960?F g(-1) at a current density of 10?mA cm(-2) over 10000 cycles. The high electrochemical performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of CNTs and the unique microstructure of CuS. The CNTs serve as not only a conductive agent to accelerate the transfer of electrons in the composites, but also as a buffer matrix to restrain the volume change and stabilize the electrode structure during the charge/discharge process. The porous structure of CuS also helps to stabilize the electrode structure and facilitates the transport for electrons.

Project description:A hierarchical mesoporous carbon foam (ECF) with an interconnected micro-/mesoporous architecture was prepared and used as a binder-free, low-cost, high-performance anode for lithium ion batteries. Due to its high specific surface area (980.6 m2/g), high porosity (99.6%), light weight (5 mg/cm3) and narrow pore size distribution (~2 to 5 nm), the ECF anode exhibited a high reversible specific capacity of 455 mAh/g. Experimental results also demonstrated that the anode thickness significantly influence the specific capacity of the battery. Meanwhile, the ECF anode retained a high rate performance and an excellent cycling performance approaching 100% of its initial capacity over 300 cycles at 0.1 A/g. In addition, no binders, carbon additives or current collectors are added to the ECF based cells that will increase the total weight of devices. The high electrochemical performance was mainly attributed to the combined favorable hierarchical structures which can facilitate the Li+ accessibility and also enable the fast diffusion of electron into the electrode during the charge and discharge process. The synthesis process used to make this elastic carbon foam is readily scalable to industrial applications in energy storage devices such as li-ion battery and supercapacitor.

Project description:A method of microalgae-templated spray drying to develop hierarchical porous Fe3O4/C composite microspheres as anode materials for Li-ion batteries was developed. During the spray-drying process, individual microalgae serve as building blocks of raspberry-like hollow microspheres via self-assembly. In the present study, microalgae-derived carbon matrices, naturally doped heteroatoms, and hierarchical porous structural features synergistically contributed to the high electrochemical performance of the Fe3O4/C composite microspheres, enabling a discharge capacity of 1375 mA·h·g-1 after 700 cycles at a current density of 1 A/g. Notably, the microalgal frameworks of the Fe3O4/C composite microspheres were maintained over the course of charge/discharge cycling, thus demonstrating the structural stability of the composite microspheres against pulverization. In contrast, the sample fabricated without microalgal templating showed significant capacity drops (up to ~40% of initial capacity) during the early cycles. Clearly, templating of microalgae endows anode materials with superior cycling stability.

Project description:Nanomaterials are extensively studied in electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems because of their structural advantages. However, their volumetric energy density still needs improvement due to the high surface area, especially the carbon based nanocomposites. Constructing hierarchical micro-scaled materials from closely stacked subunits is proposed as an effective way to solve the problem. In this work, Li3V2(PO4)3@carbon hierarchical microspheres are prepared by a solvothermal reaction and subsequent annealing. Hierarchical Li3V2(PO4)3 structures with different subunits are obtained with the aid of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). Moreover, excessive PVP interconnect and form PVP-based hydrogels, which later convert into conductive carbon layer on the surface of Li3V2(PO4)3 microspheres during the annealing process. As a cathode material for lithium ion batteries, the 3D carbon wrapped Li3V2(PO4)3 hierarchical microspheres exhibit high rate capability and excellent cycling stability. The electrode has the capacity retention of 80% after 5000 cycles even at 50C.
