Species characteristics of lead in sea foods collected from coastal water of Fujian, Southeastern of China.

ABSTRACT: Various sea foods including fish, shellfish and shrimp were collected from different coastal areas of Fujian in China, and their Pb species characteristics were investigated in detail. The results indicated that there are two different species characteristics of Pb existing in sea food samples. About half of samples were detected to have only Pb(2+), and another half of samples were detected to have both Pb(2+) and trimethyl lead (TML). The results also revealed that Pb species characteristics in the sea foods rather depend on the species of sea food than the sampling area. In comparison with shellfish/shrimp samples, fish samples have higher concentrations of TML and Pb(2+). Especially, the average concentration of TML in the TML-detected fish samples is about 3 times of that in the TML-detected shellfish/shrimp samples, indicating that fish has stronger ability to uptake and accumulate TML. The concentrations of total lead in all samples are lower than the maximum allowable limit of national standard, suggesting that the sea foods collected from Fujian are safe for consumption. By considering that TAL has more toxicity than Pb(2+), the effect of TML in sea foods on the human health should be paid more attention in the future.

Project description:BackgroundGlutaric acidemia type 1 (GA1) is a rare autosomal recessive inherited metabolic disorder caused by variants in the gene encoding the enzyme glutaryl-CoA dehydrogenase (GCDH). The estimated prevalence of GA1 and the mutational spectrum of the GCDH gene vary widely according to race and region. The aim of this study was to assess the acylcarnitine profiles and genetic characteristics of patients with GA1 in Fujian Province, southeastern China.ResultsFrom January 2014 to December 2022, a total of 1,151,069 newborns (631,016 males and 520,053 females) were screened using MS/MS in six newborn screening (NBS) centers in Fujian Province and recruited for this study. Through NBS, 18 newborns (13 females and 5 males) were diagnosed with GA1. Thus, the estimated incidence of GA1 was 1 in 63,948 newborns in Fujian province. In addition, 17 patients with GA1 were recruited after clinical diagnosis. All but one patient with GA1 had a remarkable increase in glutarylcarnitine (C5DC) concentrations. The results of urinary organic acid analyses in 33 patients showed that the concentration of glutaric acid (GA) increased in all patients. The levels of C5DC and GA in patients identified via NBS were higher than those in patients identified via clinical diagnosis (P < 0.05). A total of 71 variants of 70 alleles were detected in patients with GA1, with 19 different pathogenic variants identified. The three most prevalent variants represented 73.23% of the total and were c.1244-2 A > C, p.(?) (63.38%), c.1261G > A, p.Ala421Thr (5.63%), and c.406G > T, p.Gly136Cys (4.22%). The most abundant genotype observed was c.[1244-2 A > C]; [1244-2 A > C] (18/35, 52.43%) and its phenotype corresponded to high excretors (HE, GA > 100 mmol/mol Cr).ConclusionsIn conclusion, we investigated the biochemical and molecular features of 35 unrelated patients with GA1. C5DC concentrations in dried blood spots and urinary GA are effective indicators for a GA1 diagnosis. Our study also identified a GCDH variant spectrum in patients with GA1 from Fujian Province, southeastern China. Correlation analysis between genotypes and phenotypes provides preliminary and valuable information for genetic counseling and management.

Project description:Complete ammonia oxidizers (comammox Nitrospira) are ubiquitous in coastal wetland sediments and play an important role in nitrification. Our study examined the impact of habitat modifications on comammox Nitrospira communities in coastal wetland sediments across tropical and subtropical regions of southeastern China. Samples were collected from 21 coastal wetlands in five provinces where native mudflats were invaded by Spartina alterniflora and subsequently converted to aquaculture ponds. The results showed that comammox Nitrospira abundances were mainly influenced by sediment grain size rather than by habitat modifications. Compared to S. alterniflora marshes and native mudflats, aquaculture pond sediments had lower comammox Nitrospira diversity, lower clade A.1 abundance, and higher clade A.2 abundance. Sulfate concentration was the most important factor controlling the diversity of comammox Nitrospira. The response of comammox Nitrospira community to habitat change varied significantly by location, and environmental variables accounted for only 11.2% of the variations in community structure across all sites. In all three habitat types, dispersal limitation largely controlled the comammox Nitrospira community assembly process, indicating the stochastic nature of these sediment communities in coastal wetlands. IMPORTANCE Comammox Nitrospira have recently gained attention for their potential role in nitrification and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in soil and sediment. However, their distribution and assembly in impacted coastal wetland are poorly understood, particularly on a large spatial scale. Our study provides novel evidence that the effects of habitat modification on comammox Nitrospira communities are dependent on the location of the wetland. We also found that the assembly of comammox Nitrospira communities in coastal wetlands was mainly governed by stochastic processes. Nevertheless, sediment grain size and sulfate concentration were identified as key variables affecting comammox Nitrospira abundance and diversity in coastal sediments. These findings are significant as they advance our understanding of the environmental adaptation of comammox Nitrospira and how future landscape modifications may impact their abundance and diversity in coastal wetlands.

Project description:Morphological and molecular phylogenetic studies suggest that the pantropical genus Bauhinia L. s.l. (Bauhiniinae, Cercideae, Leguminosae) is paraphyletic and may as well be subdivided into nine genera, including Bauhinia L. s.s. and its allies. Their leaves are usually characteristic bilobate and are thus easily recognized in the fossil record. This provides the opportunity to understand the early evolution, diversification, and biogeographic history of orchid trees from an historical perspective under the framework of morphological and molecular studies.The taxonomy, distribution, and leaf architecture of Bauhinia and its allies across the world are summarized in detail, which formed the basis for classifying the bilobate leaf fossils and evaluating the fossil record and biogeography of Bauhinia. Two species of Bauhinia are described from the middle Miocene Fotan Group of Fujian Province, southeastern China. Bauhinia ungulatoides sp. nov. is characterized by shallowly to moderately bilobate, pulvinate leaves with shallowly cordate bases and acute apices on each lobe, as well as paracytic stomatal complexes. Bauhinia fotana F.M.B. Jacques et al. emend. possesses moderately bilobate, pulvinate leaves with moderately to deeply cordate bases and acute or slightly obtuse apices on each lobe.Bilobate leaf fossils Bauhinia ungulatoides and B. fotana together with other late Paleogene - early Neogene Chinese record of the genus suggest that Bauhinia had been diverse in South China by the late Paleogene. Their great similarities to some species from South America and South Asia respectively imply that Bauhinia might have undergone extensive dispersals and diversification during or before the Miocene. The fossil record, extant species diversity, as well as molecular phylogenetic analyses demonstrate that the Bauhiniinae might have originated in the Paleogene of low-latitudes along the eastern Tethys Seaway. They dispersed southwards into Africa, migrated from Eurasia to North America via the North Atlantic Land Bridge or floating islands during the Oligocene. Then the genus spread into South America probably via the Isthmus of Panama since the Miocene onward, and underwent regional extinctions in the Boreotropics of mid-high-latitudes during the Neogene climatic cooling. Hence, Bauhinia presently exhibits a pantropical intercontinental disjunct distribution.
