Encoded diffractive optics for full-spectrum computational imaging.

ABSTRACT: Diffractive optical elements can be realized as ultra-thin plates that offer significantly reduced footprint and weight compared to refractive elements. However, such elements introduce severe chromatic aberrations and are not variable, unless used in combination with other elements in a larger, reconfigurable optical system. We introduce numerically optimized encoded phase masks in which different optical parameters such as focus or zoom can be accessed through changes in the mechanical alignment of a ultra-thin stack of two or more masks. Our encoded diffractive designs are combined with a new computational approach for self-calibrating imaging (blind deconvolution) that can restore high-quality images several orders of magnitude faster than the state of the art without pre-calibration of the optical system. This co-design of optics and computation enables tunable, full-spectrum imaging using thin diffractive optics.

Metasurface optics for full-color computational imaging.

Project description:Conventional imaging systems comprise large and expensive optical components that successively mitigate aberrations. Metasurface optics offers a route to miniaturize imaging systems by replacing bulky components with flat and compact implementations. The diffractive nature of these devices, however, induces severe chromatic aberrations, and current multiwavelength and narrowband achromatic metasurfaces cannot support full visible spectrum imaging (400 to 700 nm). We combine principles of both computational imaging and metasurface optics to build a system with a single metalens of numerical aperture ~0.45, which generates in-focus images under white light illumination. Our metalens exhibits a spectrally invariant point spread function that enables computational reconstruction of captured images with a single digital filter. This work connects computational imaging and metasurface optics and demonstrates the capabilities of combining these disciplines by simultaneously reducing aberrations and downsizing imaging systems using simpler optics.

Full-color, large area, transmissive holograms enabled by multi-level diffractive optics.

Project description:We show that multi-level diffractive microstructures can enable broadband, on-axis transmissive holograms that can project complex full-color images, which are invariant to viewing angle. Compared to alternatives like metaholograms, diffractive holograms utilize much larger minimum features (>10 µm), much smaller aspect ratios (<0.2) and thereby, can be fabricated in a single lithography step over relatively large areas (>30 mm ×30 mm). We designed, fabricated and characterized holograms that encode various full-color images. Our devices demonstrate absolute transmission efficiencies of >86% across the visible spectrum from 405 nm to 633 nm (peak value of about 92%), and excellent color fidelity. Furthermore, these devices do not exhibit polarization dependence. Finally, we emphasize that our devices exhibit negligible absorption and are phase-only holograms with high diffraction efficiency.

Terahertz structured light: nonparaxial Airy imaging using silicon diffractive optics.

Project description:Structured light - electromagnetic waves with a strong spatial inhomogeneity of amplitude, phase, and polarization - has occupied far-reaching positions in both optical research and applications. Terahertz (THz) waves, due to recent innovations in photonics and nanotechnology, became so robust that it was not only implemented in a wide variety of applications such as communications, spectroscopic analysis, and non-destructive imaging, but also served as a low-cost and easily implementable experimental platform for novel concept illustration. In this work, we show that structured nonparaxial THz light in the form of Airy, Bessel, and Gaussian beams can be generated in a compact way using exclusively silicon diffractive optics prepared by femtosecond laser ablation technology. The accelerating nature of the generated structured light is demonstrated via THz imaging of objects partially obscured by an opaque beam block. Unlike conventional paraxial approaches, when a combination of a lens and a cubic phase (or amplitude) mask creates a nondiffracting Airy beam, we demonstrate simultaneous lensless nonparaxial THz Airy beam generation and its application in imaging system. Images of single objects, imaging with a controllable placed obstacle, and imaging of stacked graphene layers are presented, revealing hence potential of the approach to inspect quality of 2D materials. Structured nonparaxial THz illumination is investigated both theoretically and experimentally with appropriate extensive benchmarks. The structured THz illumination consistently outperforms the conventional one in resolution and contrast, thus opening new frontiers of structured light applications in imaging and inverse scattering problems, as it enables sophisticated estimates of optical properties of the investigated structures.

Azimuthal multiplexing 3D diffractive optics.

Project description:Diffractive optics have increasingly caught the attention of the scientific community. Classical diffractive optics are 2D diffractive optical elements (DOEs) and computer-generated holograms (CGHs), which modulate optical waves on a solitary transverse plane. However, potential capabilities are missed by the inherent two-dimensional nature of these devices. Previous work has demonstrated that extending the modulation from planar (2D) to volumetric (3D) enables new functionalities, such as generating space-variant functions, multiplexing in the spatial or spectral domain, or enhancing information capacity. Unfortunately, despite significant progress fueled by recent interest in metasurface diffraction, 3D diffractive optics still remains relatively unexplored. Here, we introduce the concept of azimuthal multiplexing. We propose, design, and demonstrate 3D diffractive optics showing this multiplexing effect. According to this new phenomenon, multiple pages of information are encoded and can be read out across independent channels by rotating one or more diffractive layers with respect to the others. We implement the concept with multilayer diffractive optical elements. An iterative projection optimization algorithm helps solve the inverse design problem. The experimental realization using photolithographically fabricated multilevel phase layers demonstrates the predicted performance. We discuss the limitations and potential of azimuthal multiplexing 3D diffractive optics.

Ultra-broadband diffractive imaging with unknown probe spectrum.

Project description:Strict requirement of a coherent spectrum in coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) architectures poses a significant obstacle to achieving efficient photon utilization across the full spectrum. To date, nearly all broadband computational imaging experiments have relied on accurate spectroscopic measurements, as broad spectra are incompatible with conventional CDI systems. This paper presents an advanced approach to broaden the scope of CDI to ultra-broadband illumination with unknown probe spectrum, effectively addresses the key challenges encountered by existing state-of-the-art broadband diffractive imaging frameworks. This advancement eliminates the necessity for prior knowledge of probe spectrum and relaxes constraints on non-dispersive samples, resulting in a significant extension in spectral bandwidth, achieving a nearly fourfold improvement in bandlimit compared to the existing benchmark. Our method not only monochromatizes a broadband diffraction pattern from unknown illumination spectrum, but also determines the compressive sampled profile of spectrum of the diffracted radiation. This superiority is experimentally validated using both CDI and ptychography techniques on an ultra-broadband supercontinuum with relative bandwidth exceeding 40%, revealing a significantly enhanced coherence and improved reconstruction with high fidelity under ultra-broadband illumination.

Multifocus microscopy with precise color multi-phase diffractive optics applied in functional neuronal imaging.

Project description:Multifocus microscopy (MFM) allows high-resolution instantaneous three-dimensional (3D) imaging and has been applied to study biological specimens ranging from single molecules inside cells nuclei to entire embryos. We here describe pattern designs and nanofabrication methods for diffractive optics that optimize the light-efficiency of the central optical component of MFM: the diffractive multifocus grating (MFG). We also implement a "precise color" MFM layout with MFGs tailored to individual fluorophores in separate optical arms. The reported advancements enable faster and brighter volumetric time-lapse imaging of biological samples. In live microscopy applications, photon budget is a critical parameter and light-efficiency must be optimized to obtain the fastest possible frame rate while minimizing photodamage. We provide comprehensive descriptions and code for designing diffractive optical devices, and a detailed methods description for nanofabrication of devices. Theoretical efficiencies of reported designs is ≈90% and we have obtained efficiencies of > 80% in MFGs of our own manufacture. We demonstrate the performance of a multi-phase MFG in 3D functional neuronal imaging in living C. elegans.

Photonic machine learning with on-chip diffractive optics.

Project description:Machine learning technologies have been extensively applied in high-performance information-processing fields. However, the computation rate of existing hardware is severely circumscribed by conventional Von Neumann architecture. Photonic approaches have demonstrated extraordinary potential for executing deep learning processes that involve complex calculations. In this work, an on-chip diffractive optical neural network (DONN) based on a silicon-on-insulator platform is proposed to perform machine learning tasks with high integration and low power consumption characteristics. To validate the proposed DONN, we fabricated 1-hidden-layer and 3-hidden-layer on-chip DONNs with footprints of 0.15 mm2 and 0.3 mm2 and experimentally verified their performance on the classification task of the Iris plants dataset, yielding accuracies of 86.7% and 90%, respectively. Furthermore, a 3-hidden-layer on-chip DONN is fabricated to classify the Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology handwritten digit images. The proposed passive on-chip DONN provides a potential solution for accelerating future artificial intelligence hardware with enhanced performance.

A Silicon Photonics Computational Lensless Active-Flat-Optics Imaging System.

Project description:The need for lightweight, miniature imaging systems is becoming increasingly prevalent in light of the development of wearable electronics, IoT devices, and drones. Computational imaging enables new types of imaging systems that replace standard optical components like lenses with cleverly designed computational processes. Traditionally, many of these types of systems use conventional complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) or charge coupled device (CCD) sensors for data collection. While this allows for rapid development of large-scale systems, the lack of system-sensor co-design limits the compactness and performance. Here we propose integrated photonics as a candidate platform for the implementation of such co-integrated systems. Using grating couplers and co-designed computational processing in lieu of a lens, we demonstrate the use of silicon photonics as a viable platform for computational imaging with a prototype lensless imaging device. The proof-of-concept device has 20 sensors and a 45-degree field of view, and its optics and sensors are contained within a 2,000 μm × 200 μm × 20 μm volume.

Computational conjugate adaptive optics microscopy for longitudinal through-skull imaging of cortical myelin.

Project description:Myelination processes are closely related to higher brain functions such as learning and memory. While their longitudinal observation has been crucial to understanding myelin-related physiology and various brain disorders, skull opening or thinning has been required to secure clear optical access. Here we present a high-speed reflection matrix microscope using a light source with a wavelength of 1.3 μm to reduce tissue scattering and aberration. Furthermore, we develop a computational conjugate adaptive optics algorithm designed for the recorded reflection matrix to optimally compensate for the skull aberrations. These developments allow us to realize label-free longitudinal imaging of cortical myelin through an intact mouse skull. The myelination processes of the same mice were observed from 3 to 10 postnatal weeks to the depth of cortical layer 4 with a spatial resolution of 0.79 μm. Our system will expedite the investigations on the role of myelination in learning, memory, and brain disorders.

Hybrid optical-electronic convolutional neural networks with optimized diffractive optics for image classification.

Project description:Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) excel in a wide variety of computer vision applications, but their high performance also comes at a high computational cost. Despite efforts to increase efficiency both algorithmically and with specialized hardware, it remains difficult to deploy CNNs in embedded systems due to tight power budgets. Here we explore a complementary strategy that incorporates a layer of optical computing prior to electronic computing, improving performance on image classification tasks while adding minimal electronic computational cost or processing time. We propose a design for an optical convolutional layer based on an optimized diffractive optical element and test our design in two simulations: a learned optical correlator and an optoelectronic two-layer CNN. We demonstrate in simulation and with an optical prototype that the classification accuracies of our optical systems rival those of the analogous electronic implementations, while providing substantial savings on computational cost.
