Prognathodes basabei, a new species of butterflyfish (Perciformes, Chaetodontidae) from the Hawaiian Archipelago.

ABSTRACT: A new species of the butterflyfish genus Prognathodes is described from specimens collected at a depth of 55-61 m off Pearl and Hermes Atoll, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. This species has been observed by mixed-gas divers and from submersibles at depths ranging from 45-187 m throughout the Hawaiian Archipelago, with shallower sightings in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and deeper in the Main Hawaiian Islands. It is similar to Prognathodes guezei (Maugé and Bauchot 1976) from the western Indian Ocean, and at least one other undescribed species of Prognathodes from Palau, differing from these species in the number of soft dorsal-fin rays, size of head, and body depth. There are also differences in the life color, and a substantial genetic difference from the Palauan species (d » .08 in mtDNA cytochrome oxidase I).

Project description:A new species of the butterflyfish genus Prognathodes (Chaetodontidae) is described from two specimens collected at a depth of 116 m off Ngemelis Island, Palau. Prognathodesgeminus sp. n. is similar to P.basabei Pyle & Kosaki, 2016 from the Hawaiian archipelago, and P.guezei (Maugé & Bauchot, 1976) from the western Indian Ocean, but differs from these species in the number of soft dorsal-fin rays, size of head, body width, and body depth. There are also subtle differences in life color, and substantial differences in the mtDNA cytochrome oxidase I sequence (d ? 0.08). Although genetic comparisons with P.guezei are unavailable, it is expected that the genetic divergence between P.guezei and P.geminus will be even greater than that between P.geminus and P.basabei. It is named for the strikingly similar color pattern it shares with P.basabei.

Roa rumsfeldi, a new butterflyfish (Teleostei, Chaetodontidae) from mesophotic coral ecosystems of the Philippines.

Project description:A new species of the butterflyfish genus Roa is herein described from the Verde Island Passage in the Philippines, West Pacific Ocean. Roa rumsfeldisp. n. was found on mesophotic coral ecosystems at Puerto Galera and Batangas, and sampled through technical mixed-gas rebreather diving at 100-130 m depth. This represents the fifth known species of Roa. The main differences between Roa rumsfeldisp. n. and its congeners are the lower number of pored scales in the lateral line, longer snout, longer caudal peduncle, shorter caudal fin, pelvic fin color (dark first spine vs. white in all other Roa), and genetics (8.4% divergence from its closest relative Roa modesta in the mitochondrial COI gene). Roa spp. are usually seen in pairs, but the two specimens we collected were solitary individuals. We have kept one of the specimens alive in the California Academy of Sciences' Twilight Zone exhibit for more than one year, where it thrives and is feeding on a variety of dried and fresh food.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Heniochus chrysostomus (Perciformes, Chaetodontidae).

Project description:We report the first mitochondrial genome sequences for the three band pennant fish, Heniochus chrysostomus. The whole mitogenome of H. chrysostomus was circular in shape and 16,650 bp in length. The mitogenome consists of 13 typical vertebrate protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes (12S rRNA and 16S rRNA), and 2 putative non-coding regions. Phylogenetic tree analysis revealed that H. chrysostomus was closely related to Heniochus diphreutes. This study will provide useful genetic information for future phylogenetic and taxonomic classification of Chaetodontidae.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Apolemichthys trimaculatus (Perciformes, Chaetodontidae).

Project description:Three-spot angelfish (Apolemichthys trimaculatus) is one of the most widespread angelfish that belongs to Pomacanthidae. However, there are few reports of the systemically classification and evolutionary analysis for A. trimaculatus so far. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of the A. trimaculatus is described. The full length of the mitogenome is 16,548 bp, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes, 22 transfer RNAs, two ribosomal RNAs genes, and a non-coding control region. The overall base composition is 28.4% for A, 25.6% for T, 29.5% for C, and 16.5% for G, with a slight AT bias (54.0%). The mitogenome of A. trimaculatus provided essential and valuable DNA molecular information for further phylogeny and management of angelfish species.

Analysis of the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Japanese butterflyfish, Chaetodon nippon (Chaetodontiformes, Chaetodontidae).

Project description:Japanese butterflyfish (Chaetodon nippon) belong to the family Chaetodontidae and order Chaetodontiformes. It has circular mitochondrial genome of 16,507 bp in length with 55.4% of A + T content and has 37 genes, including 22 tRNA, 2 rRNA, and 13 protein-coding genes, in addition to a control region. The results of phylogenetic analysis indicated that the C. nippon, C. wiebeli, C. auripes, C. auriga, C. octofasciatus, C. speculum, and C. modestus are closely related to each other. The findings of this study will provide useful genetic information for further phylogenetic and taxonomic classifications of Chaetodontidae.

The complete mitochondrial genome of threadfin butterflyfish, Chaetodon auriga (Chaetodontiformes: Chaetodontidae) and phylogenetic analysis.

Project description:Chaetodon auriga (Forsskal, 1775) belongs to the family Chaetodontidae and the order Chaetodontiformes. Here, we report the complete mitochondrial genome of C. auriga assembled using the Illumina MiSeq platform. The circular mitochondrial genome of C. auriga is 16,527 bp long, has an A + T content of 54.53%, and contains 37 genes (13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes), and a non-coding region. The overall nucleotide composition was A: 28.19%, T: 26.34%, G: 16.27%, and C: 29.20%. The mitochondrial genome of C. auriga contributes to revealing the phylogenetic relationships among species of the Chaetodontidae family.

Modeled Population Connectivity across the Hawaiian Archipelago.

Project description:We present the first comprehensive estimate of connectivity of passive pelagic particles released from coral reef habitat throughout the Hawaiian Archipelago. Potential connectivity is calculated using a Lagrangian particle transport model coupled offline with currents generated by an oceanographic circulation model, MITgcm. The connectivity matrices show a surprising degree of self-recruitment and directional dispersal towards the northwest, from the Main Hawaiian Islands (MHI) to the northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI). We identify three predicted connectivity breaks in the archipelago, that is, areas in the mid and northern part of the archipelago that have limited connections with surrounding islands and reefs. Predicted regions of limited connectivity generally match observed patterns of genetic structure reported for coral reef species in the uninhabited NWHI, but multiple genetic breaks observed in the inhabited MHI are not explained by passive dispersal. The better congruence in our modeling results based on physical transport of passive particles in the low-lying atolls of the uninhabited NWHI, but not in the anthropogenically impacted high islands of the MHI begs the question: what ultimately controls connectivity in this system?

Hawai'i Coral Disease database (HICORDIS): species-specific coral health data from across the Hawaiian archipelago.

Project description:The Hawai'i Coral Disease database (HICORDIS) houses data on colony-level coral health condition observed across the Hawaiian archipelago, providing information to conduct future analyses on coral reef health in an era of changing environmental conditions. Colonies were identified to the lowest taxonomic classification possible (species or genera), measured and assessed for visual signs of health condition. Data were recorded for 286,071 coral colonies surveyed on 1819 transects at 660 sites between 2005 and 2015. The database contains observations for 60 species from 22 genera with 21 different health conditions. The goals of the HICORDIS database are to: i) provide open access, quality controlled and validated coral health data assembled from disparate surveys conducted across Hawai'i; ii) facilitate appropriate crediting of data; and iii) encourage future analyses of coral reef health. In this article, we describe and provide data from the HICORDIS database. The data presented in this paper were used in the research article "Satellite SST-based Coral Disease Outbreak Predictions for the Hawaiian Archipelago" (Caldwell et al., 2016) [1].

New records and species of deep-sea squat lobsters (Galatheoidea, Munidopsidae) from the Hawaiian Archipelago: an integrative approach using micro-CT and barcodes.

Project description:The Hawaiian Archipelago remains extensively under-sampled for many marine invertebrate taxa, including squat lobsters. During the last few years, several deep-sea expeditions carried out in the Pacific Ocean have conducted opportunistic collections of specimens and image data from the vicinity of Hawai'i. Here we describe a new species: Munidopsis hawaii sp. nov. and provide new records for Munidopsidae in the Archipelago and its associations. We illustrate and describe the new species using an integrative approach including micro-CT 3D imaging. Phylogenetic analyses of the species collected from seamounts from Hawai'i indicate that the new species represents a divergent lineage compared to morphologically similar species such as M. dispar and M. papanui. We also study the genetic distances for the species recorded in Hawai'i and other populations of the same species in the adjacent West Pacific. Three species are now known in the Hawaiian region. We also compiled identifications from images captured with ROVs in the area. These observations suggest that munidopsid species are common in the deep sea of Hawaiian waters below 1,000 m.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Chaetodon octofasciatus (Perciformes: Chaetodontidae) and phylogenetic studies of Percoidea.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of this species was first determined in this study, which is 16,485 bp in length, containing 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, a putative control region, and 1 origin of replication on the light-strand. The overall base composition includes C(28.2%), A(28.3%), T(27.4%), and G(16.1%). Moreover, the 13 PCGs encode 3796 amino acids in total, 12 of which use the initiation codon ATG except COI that uses GTG. Most of them have TAA as the stop codon, whereas ND3 ends with TAG, and three protein-coding genes (COII, ND4, and Cytb) ended with the incomplete stop codon represented as a single T. The phylogenetic tree based on the Neighbor Joining method was constructed to provide relationship within Percoidea, which could be a useful basis for management of this species.
