The shell of the pearl oyster (<i>Pinctada fucata</i>) mainly comprises aragonite whereas that of the Pacific oyster (<i>Crassostrea gigas</i>) is mainly calcite, thereby suggesting the different mechanisms of shell formation between above two mollusks.
