Structural studies of Li1.2Mn0.55Ni0.15Co0.1O2 electrode material.

ABSTRACT: A pristine Li-rich layered electrode material with composition Li1.2Mn0.55Ni0.15Co0.1O2 was characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning transmission electron microscopy to determine whether it is a coherent mixture of monoclinic C2/m Li2MO3 and trigonal [Formula: see text] LiMO2 phases or a solid solution of the monoclinic phase. Contradictory results have been previously reported which can be attributed to the complexity and structural similarity of the monoclinic and trigonal phases. We resolved this uncertainty by combining diffraction and imaging techniques that probe complimentary length scales. Our results demonstrate that the structure is primarily monoclinic, supporting the solid solution model, although near surface structural alterations were also observed.

Benchmarking the electrochemical parameters of the LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 positive electrode material for Li-ion batteries.

Project description:The layered oxide LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811, NCM811) is of utmost technological importance as a positive electrode (cathode) material for the forthcoming generation of Li-ion batteries. In this contribution, we have collected 548 research articles comprising >950 records on the electrochemical properties of NMC811 as a cathode material in half-cells with metallic Li counter electrode. The analysis of distribution histograms provided statistically-relevant values of such key characteristics of NMC811 as the first cycle discharge capacity and Coulombic efficiency, discharge capacities at different upper cut-off voltages, capacity fade and capacity retention at the 0.1C-5C current densities. We derived equations describing the relationships between discharge capacity and upper cut-off voltage, Ni content in the LiNixMnyCozO2 compositions in vicinity of NMC811, antisite disorder, and the C-rate. Additionally, the distribution histograms were used for a qualitative comparison between various groups of NMC811 materials, such as benchmarks in various optimizations vs obtained in course of synthesis development, lab-made vs commercial, polycrystalline vs single-crystal. The results of this analysis provide justified values to be used as benchmarks in further works related to optimizing and improving NMC811 and related materials, eliminating random picking up from a huge pool of published data.

Sulfate-Containing Composite Based on Ni-Rich Layered Oxide LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 as High-Performance Cathode Material for Li-ion Batteries.

Project description:Composite positive electrode materials (1-x) LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2?xLi2SO4 (x = 0.002-0.005) for Li-ion batteries have been synthesized via conventional hydroxide or carbonate coprecipitation routes with subsequent high-temperature lithiation in either air or oxygen atmosphere. A comparative study of the materials prepared from transition metal sulfates (i.e., containing sulfur) and acetates (i.e., sulfur-free) with powder X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, high angle annular dark field transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and electron energy loss spectroscopy revealed that the sulfur-containing species occur as amorphous Li2SO4 at the grain boundaries and intergranular contacts of the primary NMC811 crystallites. This results in a noticeable enhancement of rate capability and capacity retention over prolonged charge/discharge cycling compared to their sulfur-free analogs. The improvement is attributed to suppressing the high voltage phase transition and the associated accumulation of anti-site disorder upon cycling and improving the secondary agglomerates' mechanical integrity by increasing interfacial fracture toughness through linking primary NMC811 particles with soft Li2SO4 binder, as demonstrated with nanoindentation experiments. As the synthesis of the (1-x) LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2?xLi2SO4 composites do not require additional operational steps to introduce sulfur, these electrode materials might demonstrate high potential for commercialization.

Soft X-ray Absorption Spectroscopic Investigation of Li(Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1)O2 Cathode Materials.

Project description:Herein, we report the soft X-ray absorption spectroscopic investigation for Li(Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1)O2 cathode material during charging and discharging. These measurements were carried out at the Mn L-, Co L-, and Ni L-edges during various stages of charging and discharging. Both the Mn and Co L-edge spectroscopic measurements reflect the invariance in the oxidation states of Mn and Co ions. The Ni L-edge measurements show the modification of the oxidation state of Ni ions during the charging and discharging process. These studies show that eg states are affected dominantly in the case of Ni ions during the charging and discharging process. The O K-edge measurements reflect modulation of metal-oxygen hybridization as envisaged from the area-ratio variation of spectral features corresponding to t2g and eg states.

Intrinsic Origins of Crack Generation in Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 Layered Oxide Cathode Material.

Project description:Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 layered oxide cathodes have been highlighted for large-scale energy applications due to their high energy density. Although its specific capacity is enhanced at higher voltages as Ni ratio increases, its structural degradation due to phase transformations and lattice distortions during cycling becomes severe. For these reasons, we focused on the origins of crack generation from phase transformations and structural distortions in Ni-rich LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 using multiscale approaches, from first-principles to meso-scale phase-field model. Atomic-scale structure analysis demonstrated that opposite changes in the lattice parameters are observed until the inverse Li content x = 0.75; then, structure collapses due to complete extraction of Li from between transition metal layers. Combined-phase investigations represent the highest phase barrier and steepest chemical potential after x = 0.75, leading to phase transformations to highly Li-deficient phases with an inactive character. Abrupt phase transformations with heterogeneous structural collapse after x = 0.81 (~220 mAh g-1) were identified in the nanodomain. Further, meso-scale strain distributions show around 5% of anisotropic contraction with lower critical energy release rates, which cause not only micro-crack generations of secondary particles on the interfaces between the contracted primary particles, but also mechanical instability of primary particles from heterogeneous strain changes.

LiMg0.1Co0.9BO3 as a positive electrode material for Li-ion batteries.

Project description:LiCoBO3 could be a promising cathode material given the electronic and ionic conductivity problems are addressed. Here, Mg substitution in LiCoBO3 is employed to stabilise the structure and improve the electrochemical performance. LiMg0.1Co0.9BO3 is synthesised for the first time via sol-gel method and Mg substitution in the structure is verified by X-ray powder diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analyses. The electrochemical properties are investigated by galvanostatic cycling and cyclic voltammetry tests. The composite electrode with conductive carbon (reduced graphite oxide and carbon black) delivers a first discharge capacity of 32 mA h g-1 within a 4.7-1.7 voltage window at a rate of 10 mA g-1. The cycling is relatively stable compared to the unsubstituted LiCoBO3. Mg substitution may enhance the electrochemical performance of borate-based electrode materials when combined with suitable electrode design techniques.

Self-standing Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2/graphene membrane as a binder-free cathode for Li-ion batteries.

Project description:Lithium-rich transition-metal layered oxides (LROs), such as Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2, are promising cathode materials for application in Li-ion batteries, but the low initial coulombic efficiency, severe voltage fade and poor rate performance of the LROs restrict their commercial application. Herein, a self-standing Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2/graphene membrane was synthesized as a binder-free cathode for Li-ion batteries. Integrating the graphene membrane with Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2 forming a Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2/graphene structure significantly increases the surface areas and pore volumes of the cathode, as well as the reversibility of oxygen redox during the charge-discharge process. The initial discharge capacity of the Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2/graphene membrane is ∼270 mA h g-1 (∼240 mA h g-1 for Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2) and its initial coulombic efficiency is 90% (72% for Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2) at a current density of 40 mA g-1. The capacity retention of the Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2/graphene membrane remains at 88% at 40 mA g-1 after 80 cycles, and the rate performance is largely improved compared with that of the pristine Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2. The improved performance of the Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2/graphene membrane is ascribed to the lower charge-transfer resistance and solid electrolyte interphase resistance of the Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2/graphene membrane compared to that of Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2. Moreover, the lithium ion diffusion of the Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2/graphene membrane is enhanced by three orders of magnitude compared to that of Li1.2Mn0.6Ni0.2O2. This work may provide a new avenue to improve the electrochemical performance of LROs through tuning the oxygen redox progress during cycling.

Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 nanosheets with porous structure as a high-performance cathode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:The morphological and structural optimizations of electrode materials are efficient ways to enhance their electrochemical performance. Herein, we report a facile co-precipitation and subsequent calcination method to fabricate Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 nanosheets consisting of interconnected primary nanoparticles and open holes through the full thickness. By comparing the nanosheets and the agglomerated nanoparticles, the effects of the morphology and structure on the electrochemical performance are investigated. Specifically, the nanosheets exhibit a discharge capacity of 210 mA h g-1 at 0.5C with a capacity retention of 85% after 100 cycles. The improved electrochemical performance could be attributed to their morphological and structural improvements, which may facilitate sufficient electrolyte contacts, short diffusion paths and good structural integrity during the charge/discharge process. This work provides a feasible approach to fabricate lithium-rich layered oxide cathode materials with 2D morphology and porous structure, and reveals the relationships between their morphology, structure and electrochemical performance.

Mitigating the Surface Degradation and Voltage Decay of Li1.2Ni0.13Mn0.54Co0.13O2 Cathode Material through Surface Modification Using Li2ZrO3.

Project description:In the quest to tackle the issue of surface degradation and voltage decay associated with Li-rich phases, Li-ion conductive Li2ZrO3 (LZO) is coated on Li1.2Ni0.13Mn0.54Co0.13O2 (LNMC) by a simple wet chemical process. The LZO phase coated on LNMC, with a thickness of about 10 nm, provides a structural integrity and facilitates the ion pathways throughout the charge-discharge process, which results in significant improvement of the electrochemical performances. The surface-modified cathode material exhibits a reversible capacity of 225 mA h g-1 (at C/5 rate) and retains 85% of the initial capacity after 100 cycles. Whereas, the uncoated pristine sample shows a capacity of 234 mA h g-1 and retains only 57% of the initial capacity under identical conditions. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals that the LZO coating plays a vital role in stabilizing the interface between the electrode and electrolyte during cycling; thus, it alleviates material degradation and voltage fading and ameliorates the electrochemical performance.

Enhanced stability of vanadium-doped Li1.2Ni0.16Co0.08Mn0.56O2 cathode materials for superior Li-ion batteries.

Project description:Lithium-manganese-based cathode materials have attracted much attention due to its high specific capacity, but the low initial coulomb efficiency, poor rate performance and voltage attenuation during cycling limit its application. In this work, Li1.2Ni0.16Co0.08Mn0.56-x V x O2 samples (x = 0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02, 0.05) were prepared using the sol-gel method, and the effects of different V5+ contents on the structure, valence state, and electrochemical performance of electrode materials were investigated. The results show that the introduction of high-valence V5+ in cathode materials can reduce partial Mn4+ to active Mn3+ ions for charge conservation, which not only improves the discharge capacity and coulomb efficiency of Li-rich manganese-based cathode materials, but also inhibits the voltage attenuation. The initial discharge capacity of the Li1.2Ni0.16Co0.08Mn0.55V0.01O2 is as high as 280.9 mA h g-1 with coulomb efficiency of 77.7% at 0.05C, which is much higher than that of the undoped pristine sample (236.6 mA h g-1 with coulomb efficiency of 74.0%). After 100 cycles at 0.1C, the capacity retention rate of Li1.2Ni0.16Co0.08Mn0.55V0.01O2 was 92.3% with the median voltage retention rate of 95.6%. This work provides a new idea for high performance of lithium-rich manganese-based cathode materials.

Temperature-Controlled Synthesis of Li- and Mn-Rich Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 Hollow Nano/Sub-Microsphere Electrodes for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery.

Project description:The calcination temperature plays a significant role in the structural, textural, and energy-storage performance of metal oxide nanomaterials in Li-ion battery application. Here, we report the formation of well-crystallized homogeneously dispersed Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 hollow nano/sub-microsphere architectures through a simple cost-effective coprecipitation and chemical mixing route without surface modification for improving the efficiency of energy storage devices. The synthesized Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 hollow nano/sub-microsphere cathode materials are calcined at 800, 900, 950, and 1000 °C. Among them, Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 calcined at 950 °C exhibits a high discharge capacity (277 mAh g-1 at 0.1C rate) and excellent capacity retention (88%) after 50 cycles and also delivers an excellent discharge capacity of >172 mAh g-1 at 5C rate. Good electrochemical performance of Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2-950 is directly related to the optimized size of its primary particles (85 nm) (which constitute the spherical secondary particle, ∼720 nm) and homogeneous cation mixing. Higher calcination temperature (≥950 °C) leads to an increase of the primary particle size, poor cycling stability, and inferior rate capacity of Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2 due to smashing of quasi-hollow spheres upon repeated lithium ion intercalations/deintercalations. Therefore, Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2-950 is a promising electrode for the next-generation high-voltage and high-capacity Li-ion battery application.
