Giant Kerr response of ultrathin gold films from quantum size effect.

ABSTRACT: With the size of plasmonic devices entering into the nanoscale region, the impact of quantum physics needs to be considered. In the past, the quantum size effect on linear material properties has been studied extensively. However, the nonlinear aspects have not been explored much so far. On the other hand, much effort has been put into the field of integrated nonlinear optics and a medium with large nonlinearity is desirable. Here we study the optical nonlinear properties of a nanometre scale gold quantum well by using the z-scan method and nonlinear spectrum broadening technique. The quantum size effect results in a giant optical Kerr susceptibility, which is four orders of magnitude higher than the intrinsic value of bulk gold and several orders larger than traditional nonlinear media. Such high nonlinearity enables efficient nonlinear interaction within a microscopic footprint, making quantum metallic films a promising candidate for integrated nonlinear optical applications.

Possible absence of critical thickness and size effect in ultrathin perovskite ferroelectric films.

Project description:Although the size effect in ferroelectric thin films has been known for long time, the underlying mechanism is not yet fully understood and whether or not there is a critical thickness below which the ferroelectricity vanishes is still under debate. Here, we directly measure the thickness-dependent polarization in ultrathin PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 films via quantitative annular bright field imaging. We find that the polarization is significantly suppressed for films <10-unit cells thick (∼4 nm). However, approximately the polarization never vanishes. The residual polarization is ∼16 μCcm-2 (∼17%) at 1.5-unit cells (∼0.6 nm) thick film on bare SrTiO3 and ∼22 μCcm-2 at 2-unit cells thick film on SrTiO3 with SrRuO3 electrode. The residual polarization in these ultrathin films is mainly attributed to the robust covalent Pb-O bond. Our atomic study provides new insights into mechanistic understanding of nanoscale ferroelectricity and the size effects.

Exceptional fracture resistance of ultrathin metallic glass films due to an intrinsic size effect.

Project description:Metallic glasses typically fail in a brittle manner through shear band propagation but can exhibit significant ductility when the sample size is reduced below a few hundreds of nanometers. To date the size effect was mainly demonstrated for free-standing samples and the role of extrinsic setup parameters on the observed behavior is still under debate. Therefore, in the present work we investigated the mechanical properties of polymer-supported sputtered amorphous Pd82Si18 thin films with various thicknesses. We show that the films exhibit brittle fracture for thicknesses far below 100 nm. A pronounced size effect resulting in extended crack-free deformation up to 6% strain was observed only in films as thin as 7 nm - a thickness which is lower than the typical shear band thickness. This size effect results in exceptional cyclic reliability of ultrathin metallic glass films which can sustain cyclic strains of 3% up to at least 30,000 cycles without any indication of fatigue damage or electrical conductivity degradation. Since the enhancement of mechanical properties is observed at ambient conditions using inexpensive substrates and an industrially scalable sputter deposition technique, a new research avenue for utilization of ultrathin metallic glasses in microelectronics, flexible electronics or nanoelectromechanical devices is opened up.

Stamping patterns of insulated gold nanowires with self-organized ultrathin polymer films.

Project description:A thermal contact transfer technique is presented for the fabrication of nanoscaled to microscaled patterns of polymer-insulated metal structures on ceramic surfaces using metal-coated, thermoplastic stamps. The thermally activated formation of polymer-metal-polymer (PMP) heterostructures occurs spontaneously when a metal-coated thermoplastic stamp is compressed against a ceramic substrate and subsequently heated. The presented technique exploits the dynamics of ultrathin polymer films localized at interfaces and interfacial forces to prompt local reorganization of polymer stamp materials during processing. Intercalation of polymer stamp materials into the metal-substrate interface yields a cohesive polymer layer that binds the metal layer to the substrate. Disproportionate adhesion between the bulk polymer and the polymer layer at the stamp-metal interface leaves a capping layer upon separation of the stamp from the substrate. Here we demonstrate this technique with single use, bilevel polymer stamps which afford transfer of two distinct general products. The transfer of insulated submicrometer wide wires from the raised stamp features affords patterns of trilayered PMP structures with uniform wire dimensions. Concomitant transfer from the recessed stamp features allows fabrication of multilayered PMP architectures with sub-100 nm spacing from microstructured polymer stamps. Thus, patterns with two different insulated nanowire widths are readily fabricated in a single stamping process. A variety of ceramic substrates, thermoplastic materials, and metals can be used; e.g., inexpensive gold-coated CD or DVD media can be used as stamps, where the combination of materials dictates the relative interfacial forces and the processing parameters.

Anomalous quantum Griffiths singularity in ultrathin crystalline lead films.

Project description:Superconductor-insulator/metal transition (SIT/SMT) represents a prototype of quantum phase transition, where quantum fluctuation plays a dominant role and dramatically changes the physical properties of low-dimensional superconducting systems. Recent observation of quantum Griffiths singularity (QGS) offers an essential perspective to understand the subtleties of quantum phase transition in two-dimensional superconductors. Here we study the magnetic field induced SMT in ultrathin crystalline Pb films down to ultralow temperatures. The divergent critical exponent is observed when approaching zero temperature quantum critical point, indicating QGS. Distinctively, the anomalous phase boundary of SMT that the onset critical field decreases with decreasing temperatures in low temperature regime distinguishes our observation from previous reports of QGS in various two-dimensional superconductors. We demonstrate that the anomalous phase boundary originates from the superconducting fluctuations in ultrathin Pb films with pronounced spin-orbit interaction. Our findings reveal a novel aspect of QGS of SMT in two-dimensional superconductors with anomalous phase boundary.

Magneto-optical fingerprints of distinct graphene multilayers using the giant infrared Kerr effect.

Project description:The remarkable electronic properties of graphene strongly depend on the thickness and geometry of graphene stacks. This wide range of electronic tunability is of fundamental interest and has many applications in newly proposed devices. Using the mid-infrared, magneto-optical Kerr effect, we detect and identify over 18 interband cyclotron resonances (CR) that are associated with ABA and ABC stacked multilayers as well as monolayers that coexist in graphene that is epitaxially grown on 4H-SiC. Moreover, the magnetic field and photon energy dependence of these features enable us to explore the band structure, electron-hole band asymmetries, and mechanisms that activate a CR response in the Kerr effect for various multilayers that coexist in a single sample. Surprisingly, we find that the magnitude of monolayer Kerr effect CRs is not temperature dependent. This unexpected result reveals new questions about the underlying physics that makes such an effect possible.

Femtosecond time-resolved photodissociation dynamics of methyl halide molecules on ultrathin gold films.

Project description:The photodissociation of small organic molecules, namely methyl iodide, methyl bromide, and methyl chloride, adsorbed on a metal surface was investigated in real time by means of femtosecond-laser pump-probe mass spectrometry. A weakly interacting gold surface was employed as substrate because the intact adsorption of the methyl halide molecules was desired prior to photoexcitation. The gold surface was prepared as an ultrathin film on Mo(100). The molecular adsorption behavior was characterized by coverage dependent temperature programmed desorption spectroscopy. Submonolayer preparations were irradiated with UV light of 266 nm wavelength and the subsequently emerging methyl fragments were probed by photoionization and mass spectrometric detection. A strong dependence of the excitation mechanism and the light-induced dynamics on the type of molecule was observed. Possible photoexcitation mechanisms included direct photoexcitation to the dissociative A-band of the methyl halide molecules as well as the attachment of surface-emitted electrons with transient negative ion formation and subsequent molecular fragmentation. Both reaction pathways were energetically possible in the case of methyl iodide, yet, no methyl fragments were observed. As a likely explanation, the rapid quenching of the excited states prior to fragmentation is proposed. This quenching mechanism could be prevented by modification of the gold surface through pre-adsorption of iodine atoms. In contrast, the A-band of methyl bromide was not energetically directly accessible through 266 nm excitation. Nevertheless, the one-photon-induced dissociation was observed in the case of methyl bromide. This was interpreted as being due to a considerable energetic down-shift of the electronic A-band states of methyl bromide by about 1.5 eV through interaction with the gold substrate. Finally, for methyl chloride no photofragmentation could be detected at all.

High-Refractive-Index Materials for Giant Enhancement of the Transverse Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect.

Project description:The ability of plasmonic structures to confine and enhance light at nanometer length scales has been traditionally exploited to boost the magneto-optical effects in magneto-plasmonic structures. These platforms allows for light control via externally applied magnetic fields, which is of prime importance for sensing, data storage, optical-isolation, and telecommunications applications. However, applications are hindered by the high-level of ohmic losses associated to metallic and ferromagnetic components. Here, we use a lossless all-dielectric platform for giant enhancement of the magneto-optical effects. Our structure consists of a high-refractive index dielectric film on top of a magnetic dielectric substrate. We numerically demonstrate an extraordinarily enhanced transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect due to the Fabry-Perot resonances supported by the high-refractive index slab. Potential applications for sensing and biosensing are also illustrated in this work.

Ultrathin calcinated films on a gold surface for highly effective laser desorption/ionization of biomolecules.

Project description:We report a nanoscale calcinated silicate film fabricated on a gold substrate for highly effective, matrix-free laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) analysis of biomolecules. The calcinated film is prepared by a layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition/calcination process wherein the thickness of the silicate layer and its surface properties are precisely controlled. The film exhibits outstanding efficiency in LDI-MS with extremely low background noise in the low-mass region, allowing for effective analysis of low mass samples and detection of large biomolecules including amino acids, peptides, and proteins. Additional advantages for the calcinated film include ease of preparation and modification, high reproducibility, low cost, and excellent reusability. Experimental parameters that influence LDI on calcinated films have been systemically investigated. Presence of citric acid in the sample significantly enhances LDI performance by facilitating protonation of the analyte and reducing fragmentation. The wetting property and surface roughness appear to be important factors that manipulate LDI performance of the analytes. This new substrate presents a marked advance in the development of matrix-free mass spectrometric methods and is uniquely suited for analysis of biomolecules over a broad mass range with high sensitivity. It may open new avenues for developing novel technology platforms upon integration with existing methods in microfluidics and optics.

Electrical conduction and noise spectroscopy of sodium-alginate gold-covered ultrathin films for flexible green electronics.

Project description:Green electronics is an emerging topic that requires the exploration of new methodologies for the integration of green components into electronic devices. Therefore, the development of alternative and eco-friendly raw materials, biocompatible and biodegradable, is of great importance. Among these, sodium-alginate is a natural biopolymer extracted from marine algae having a great potential in terms of transparency, flexibility, and conductivity, when functionalized with a thin gold (Au) layer. The electrical transport of these flexible and conducting substrates has been studied, by DC measurements, from 300 to 10 K, to understand the interplay between the organic substrate and the metallic layer. The results were compared to reference bilayers based on polymethyl-methacrylate, a well-known polymer used in electronics. In addition, a detailed investigation of the electric noise properties was also performed. This analysis allows to study the effect of charge carriers fluctuations, providing important information to quantify the minimum metallic thickness required for electronic applications. In particular, the typical noise behavior of metallic compounds was observed in samples covered with 5 nm of Au, while noise levels related to a non-metallic conduction were found for a thickness of 4.5 nm, despite of the relatively good DC conductance of the bilayer.

Tunable Magneto-Optical Kerr Effects of Nanoporous Thin Films.

Project description:Magnetoplasmonics, combining magnetic and plasmonic functions, has attracted increasing attention owing to its unique magnetic and optical properties in various nano-architectures. In this work, Ag, CoFeB and ITO layers are fabricated on anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) porous films to form hybrid multi-layered nanoporous thin films by magnetron sputtering deposition process. The designed nanostructure supports localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and tunable magneto-optical (MO) activity, namely, the sign inversion, which can be controlled by AAO porous film geometry (pore diameter and inter-pore spacing) flexibly. The physical mechanism of this special MO phenomena is further analyzed and discussed by the correlation of Kerr rotation and electronic oscillations controlled by the surface plasmon resonance that is related to the nanoporous structure.
