An Organic Mixed Ion-Electron Conductor for Power Electronics.

ABSTRACT: A mixed ionic-electronic conductor based on nanofibrillated cellulose composited with poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythio-phene):-poly(styrene-sulfonate) along with high boiling point solvents is demonstrated in bulky electrochemical devices. The high electronic and ionic conductivities of the resulting nanopaper are exploited in devices which exhibit record values for the charge storage capacitance (1F) in supercapacitors and transconductance (1S) in electrochemical transistors.

Tuning direct-written terahertz metadevices with organic mixed ion-electron conductors.

Project description:In the past decade, organic mixed ion-electron conductors have been successfully adopted in innovative bioelectronic, neuromorphic, and electro-optical technologies, as well as in multiple energy harvesting and printed electronics applications. However, despite the intense research efforts devoted to these materials, organic mixed conductors have not yet found application in electronic/photonic devices operating in key regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as the microwave (>5 GHz) and terahertz (0.1-10 THz) ranges. A possible reason for this technological gap is the widespread notion that organic electronic materials are unsuitable for high-frequency applications. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time the utility of high-performance polymer mixed conductors as electro-active tuning layers in reconfigurable terahertz metasurfaces, achieving modulation performances comparable with state-of-the-art inorganic and 2D semiconductors. Through time-domain terahertz spectroscopy, we show that the large conductivity modulations of these polymers, until now probed only at very low frequencies, are effectively preserved in the terahertz range, leading to optimal metadevice reconfigurability. Finally, we leverage the unique processability of organic materials to develop fully direct-written electrically tuneable metasurfaces onto both rigid and flexible substrates, opening new opportunities for the mass-scale realization of flexible and light-weight terahertz optics with unique mechanical characteristics and environmental footprint.

Printed sustainable elastomeric conductor for soft electronics.

Project description:The widespread adoption of renewable and sustainable elastomers in stretchable electronics has been impeded by challenges in their fabrication and lacklustre performance. Here, we realize a printed sustainable stretchable conductor with superior electrical performance by synthesizing sustainable and recyclable vegetable oil polyurethane (VegPU) elastomeric binder and developing a solution sintering method for their composites with Ag flakes. The binder impedes the propagation of cracks through its porous network, while the solution sintering reaction reduces the resistance increment upon stretching, resulting in high stretchability (350%), superior conductivity (12833 S cm-1), and low hysteresis (0.333) after 100% cyclic stretching. The sustainable conductor was used to print durable and stretchable impedance sensors for non-obstructive detection of fruit maturity in food sensing technology. The combination of sustainable materials and strategies for realizing high-performance stretchable conductors provides a roadmap for the development of sustainable stretchable electronics.

A Solvent-Free Covalent Organic Framework Single-Ion Conductor Based on Ion-Dipole Interaction for All-Solid-State Lithium Organic Batteries.

Project description:Single-ion conductors based on covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have garnered attention as a potential alternative to currently prevalent inorganic ion conductors owing to their structural uniqueness and chemical versatility. However, the sluggish Li+ conduction has hindered their practical applications. Here, we present a class of solvent-free COF single-ion conductors (Li-COF@P) based on weak ion-dipole interaction as opposed to traditional strong ion-ion interaction. The ion (Li+ from the COF)-dipole (oxygen from poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate embedded in the COF pores) interaction in the Li-COF@P promotes ion dissociation and Li+ migration via directional ionic channels. Driven by this single-ion transport behavior, the Li-COF@P enables reversible Li plating/stripping on Li-metal electrodes and stable cycling performance (88.3% after 2000 cycles) in organic batteries (Li metal anode||5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bis-p-benzoquinone (Me2BBQ) cathode) under ambient operating conditions, highlighting the electrochemical viability of the Li-COF@P for all-solid-state organic batteries.

Organic Power Electronics: Transistor Operation in the kA/cm<sup>2</sup> Regime.

Project description:In spite of interesting features as flexibility, organic thin-film transistors have commercially lagged behind due to the low mobilities of organic semiconductors associated with hopping transport. Furthermore, organic transistors usually have much larger channel lengths than their inorganic counterparts since high-resolution structuring is not available in low-cost production schemes. Here, we present an organic permeable-base transistor (OPBT) which, despite extremely simple processing without any high-resolution structuring, achieve a performance beyond what has so far been possible using organic semiconductors. With current densities above 1 kA cm-2 and switching speeds towards 100 MHz, they open the field of organic power electronics. Finding the physical limits and an effective mobility of only 0.06 cm2 V-1 s-1, this OPBT device architecture has much more potential if new materials optimized for its geometry will be developed.

Understanding Interface Dipoles at an Electron Transport Material/Electrode Modifier for Organic Electronics.

Project description:Interface dipoles formed at an electrolyte/electrode interface have been widely studied and interpreted using the "double dipole step" model, where the dipole vector is determined by the size and/or range of motion of the charged ions. Some electron transport materials (ETMs) with lone pairs of electrons on heteroatoms exhibit a similar interfacial behavior. However, the origin of the dipoles in such materials has not yet been explored in great depth. Herein, we systematically investigate the influence of the lone pair of electrons on the interface dipole through three pyridine derivatives B2-B4PyMPM. Experiments show that different positions of nitrogen atoms in the three materials give rise to different hydrogen bonds and molecular orientations, thereby affecting the areal density and direction of the lone pair of electrons. The interface dipoles of the three materials predicted by the "double dipole step" model are in good agreement with the ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy results both in spin-coated and vacuum-deposited films. These findings help to better understand the ETMs/electrode interfacial behaviors and provide new guidelines for the molecular design of the interlayer.

Asymmetrically Functionalized Electron-Deficient π-Conjugated System for Printed Single-Crystalline Organic Electronics.

Project description:Large-area single-crystalline thin films of n-type organic semiconductors (OSCs) fabricated via solution-processed techniques are urgently demanded for high-end electronics. However, the lack of molecular designs that concomitantly offer excellent charge-carrier transport, solution-processability, and chemical/thermal robustness for n-type OSCs limits the understanding of fundamental charge-transport properties and impedes the realization of large-area electronics. The benzo[de]isoquinolino[1,8-gh]quinolinetetracarboxylic diimide (BQQDI) π-electron system with phenethyl substituents (PhC2 -BQQDI) demonstrates high electron mobility and robustness but its strong aggregation results in unsatisfactory solubility and solution-processability. In this work, an asymmetric molecular design approach is reported that harnesses the favorable charge transport of PhC2 -BQQDI, while introducing alkyl chains to improve the solubility and solution-processability. An effective synthetic strategy is developed to obtain the target asymmetric BQQDI (PhC2 -BQQDI-Cn ). Interestingly, linear alkyl chains of PhC2 -BQQDI-Cn (n = 5-7) exhibit an unusual molecular mimicry geometry with a gauche conformation and resilience to dynamic disorders. Asymmetric PhC2 -BQQDI-C5 demonstrates excellent electron mobility and centimeter-scale continuous single-crystalline thin films, which are two orders of magnitude larger than that of PhC2 -BQQDI, allowing for the investigation of electron transport anisotropy and applicable electronics.

Enhanced mixed proton and electron conductor at room temperature from chemically modified single-wall carbon nanotubes.

Project description:Remarkably high mixed proton and electron conduction arising from oxidized single-wall carbon nanotubes at room temperature is demonstrated. The respective proton and electronic conductivities are 1.40 and 8.0 × 10-2 S cm-1 in the in-plane direction, and 3.1 × 10-2 and 1.1 × 10-3 S cm-1 in the out-of-plane direction, indicating their potential in a wide range of solid electrolyte membranes.

Ion buffering and interface charge enable high performance electronics with organic electrochemical transistors.

Project description:Organic electrochemical transistors rely on ionic-electronic volumetric interaction to provide a seamless interface between biology and electronics with outstanding signal amplification. Despite their huge potential, further progress is limited owing to the lack of understanding of the device fundamentals. Here, we investigate organic electrochemical transistors in a wide range of experimental conditions by combining electrical analyses and device modeling. We show that the measurements can be quantitatively explained by nanoscale ionic-electronic charge interaction, giving rise to ion buffering and interface charge compensation. The investigation systematically explains and unifies a wide range of experiments, providing the rationale for the development of high-performance electronics. Unipolar inverters - universal building blocks for electronics - with gain larger than 100 are demonstrated. This is the highest gain ever reported, enabling the design of devices and circuits with enhanced performance and opening opportunities for the next-generation integrated bioelectronics and neuromorphic computing.

Understanding a Single-Li-Ion COF Conductor for Being Dendrite Free in a Li-Organic Battery.

Project description:In addition to improving ion conductivity and the transference number, single-Li-ion conductors (SLCs) also enable the elimination of interfacial side reactions and concentration difference polarization. Therefore, the SLCs can achieve high performance in solid-state batteries with Li metal as anode and organic molecule as cathode. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are leading candidates for constructing SLCs because of the excellent 1D channels and accurate chemical-modification skeleton. Herein, various contents of lithium-sulfonated covalently anchored COFs (denoted as LiO3S-COF1 and LiO3S-COF2) are controllably synthesized as SLCs. Due to the directional ion channels, high Li contents, and single-ion frameworks, LiO3S-COF2 shows exceptional Li-ion conductivity of 5.47 × 10-5 S · cm-1, high transference number of 0.93, and low activation energy of 0.15 eV at room temperature. Such preeminent Li-ion-transported properties of LiO3S-COF2 permit stable Li+ plating/stripping in a symmetric lithium metal battery, effectively impeding the Li dendrite growth in a liquid cell. Moreover, the designed quasi-solid-state cell (organic anthraquinone (AQ) as cathode, Li metal as anode, and LiO3S-COF2 as electrolyte) shows high-capacity retention and rate behavior. Consequently, LiO3S-COF2 implies a potential value restraining the dissolution of small organic molecules and Li dendrite growth.

Suppressing electron-phonon coupling in organic photovoltaics for high-efficiency power conversion.

Project description:The nonradiative energy loss (∆Enr) is a critical factor to limit the efficiency of organic solar cells. Generally, strong electron-phonon coupling induced by molecular motion generates fast nonradiative decay and causes high ∆Enr. How to restrict molecular motion and achieve a low ∆Enr is a sticking point. Herein, the free volume ratio (FVR) is proposed as an indicator to evaluate molecular motion, providing new molecular design rationale to suppress nonradiative decay. Theoretical and experimental results indicate proper proliferation of alkyl side-chain can decrease FVR and restrict molecular motion, leading to reduced electron-phonon coupling while maintaining ideal nanomorphology. The reduced FVR and favorable morphology are simultaneously obtained in AQx-6 with pinpoint alkyl chain proliferation, achieving a high PCE of 18.6% with optimized VOC, JSC and FF. Our study discovered aggregation-state regulation is of great importance to the reduction of electron-phonon coupling, which paves the way to high-efficiency OSCs.
