Chloroquine-containing HPMA copolymers (pCQs) were synthesized for the first time by copolymerization of methacryloylated hydroxychloroquine and HPMA. The copolymers showed lower cytotoxicity when compared with hydroxychloroquine. Treatment of cancer cells with pCQ resulted in decreased surface expression of chemokine receptor CXCR4.
