The photochemical reaction of Fe<sub>2</sub>(S<sub>2</sub>)(CO)<sub>6</sub> and Ph<sub>2</sub>CS affords the perthiolate Fe<sub>2</sub>(S<sub>3</sub>CPh<sub>2</sub>)(CO)<sub>6</sub> (<b>1</b>) in good yield. As confirmed crystallographically, <b>1</b> contains a previously elusive perthiolate ligand. The related reaction of Fe<sub>2</sub>(S<sub>2</sub>)(CO)<sub>5</sub>-(PPh<sub>3</sub>) and Ph<sub>2</sub>CS gave Fe<sub>2</sub>(S<sub>3</sub>CPh<sub>2</sub>)(CO)<sub>5</sub>(PPh<sub>3</sub>). Project description:Virtually all organosulfur compounds react with Fe(0) carbonyls to give the title complexes. These reactions are reviewed in light of major advances over the past few decades, spurred by interest in Fe2(?-SR)2(CO)x centers at the active sites of the [FeFe]-hydrogenase enzymes. The most useful synthetic route to Fe2(?-SR)2(CO)6 involves the reaction of thiols with Fe2(CO)9 and Fe3(CO)12. Such reactions can proceed via mono-, di-, and triiron intermediates. The reactivity of Fe(0) carbonyls toward thiols is highly chemoselective, and the resulting dithiolato complexes are fairly rugged. Thus, many complexes tolerate further synthetic elaboration directed at the organic substituents. A second major route involves alkylation of Fe2(?-S2)(CO)6, Fe2(?-SH)2(CO)6, and Li2Fe2(?-S)2(CO)6. This approach is especially useful for azadithiolates Fe2[(?-SCH2)2NR](CO)6. Elaborate complexes arise via addition of the FeSH group to electrophilic alkenes, alkynes, and carbonyls. Although the first example of Fe2(?-SR)2(CO)6 was prepared from ferrous reagents, ferrous compounds are infrequently used, although the Fe(II)(SR)2 + Fe(0) condensation reaction is promising. Almost invariably low-yielding, the reaction of Fe3(CO)12, S8, and a variety of unsaturated substrates results in C-H activation, affording otherwise inaccessible derivatives. Thiones and related C?S-containing reagents are highly reactive toward Fe(0), often giving complexes derived from substituted methanedithiolates and C-H activation.

Project description:This investigation examines the protonation of diiron dithiolates, exploiting the new family of exceptionally electron-rich complexes Fe(2)(xdt)(CO)(2)(PMe(3))(4), where xdt is edt (ethanedithiolate, 1), pdt (propanedithiolate, 2), and adt (2-aza-1,3-propanedithiolate, 3), prepared by the photochemical substitution of the corresponding hexacarbonyls. Compounds 1-3 oxidize near -950 mV vs Fc(+/0). Crystallographic analyses confirm that 1 and 2 adopt C(2)-symmetric structures (Fe-Fe = 2.616 and 2.625 Å, respectively). Low-temperature protonation of 1 afforded exclusively [?-H1](+), establishing the non-intermediacy of the terminal hydride ([t-H1](+)). At higher temperatures, protonation afforded mainly [t-H1](+). The temperature dependence of the ratio [t-H1](+)/[?-H1](+) indicates that the barriers for the two protonation pathways differ by ?4 kcal/mol. Low-temperature (31)P{(1)H} NMR measurements indicate that the protonation of 2 proceeds by an intermediate, proposed to be the S-protonated dithiolate [Fe(2)(Hpdt)(CO)(2)(PMe(3))(4)](+) ([S-H2](+)). This intermediate converts to [t-H2](+) and [?-H2](+) by first-order and second-order processes, respectively. DFT calculations support transient protonation at sulfur and the proposal that the S-protonated species (e.g., [S-H2](+)) rearranges to the terminal hydride intramolecularly via a low-energy pathway. Protonation of 3 affords exclusively terminal hydrides, regardless of the acid or conditions, to give [t-H3](+), which isomerizes to [t-H3'](+), wherein all PMe(3) ligands are basal.

Project description:DFT calculations have been carried out for coordinatively saturated neutral and charged carbonyl complexes [M(CO) n ] q where M is a metal atom of groups 2-10. The model compounds M(CO)2 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) and the experimentally observed [Ba(CO)]+ were also studied. The bonding situation has been analyzed with a variety of charge and energy partitioning approaches. It is shown that the Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson model in terms of M ← CO σ-donation and M → CO π-backdonation is a valid approach to explain the M-CO bonds and the trend of the CO stretching frequencies. The carbonyl ligands of the neutral complexes carry a negative charge, and the polarity of the M-CO bonds increases for the less electronegative metals, which is particularly strong for the group 4 and group 2 atoms. The NBO method delivers an unrealistic charge distribution in the carbonyl complexes, while the AIM approach gives physically reasonable partial charges that are consistent with the EDA-NOCV calculations and with the trend of the C-O stretching frequencies. The AdNDP method provides delocalized MOs which are very useful models for the carbonyl complexes. Deep insight into the nature of the metal-CO bonds and quantitative information about the strength of the [M] ← (CO)8 σ-donation and [M(d)] → (CO)8 π-backdonation visualized by the deformation densities are provided by the EDA-NOCV method. The large polarity of the M-CO π orbitals toward the CO end in the alkaline earth octacarbonyls M(CO)8 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) leads to small values for the delocalization indices δ(M-C) and δ(M···O) and significant overlap between adjacent CO groups, but the origin of the charge migration and the associated red-shift of the C-O stretching frequencies is the [M(d)] → (CO)8 π-backdonation. The heavier alkaline earth metals calcium, strontium and barium use their s/d valence orbitals for covalent bonding. They are therefore to be assigned to the transition metals.

Project description:Addition of H(+) to a synthetic (mu-1,2-peroxo)diiron(III) model complex results in protonation of a carboxylate rather than the peroxo ligand. This conclusion is based on spectroscopic evidence from UV-vis, (57)Fe Mossbauer, resonance Raman, infrared, and (1)H/(19)F NMR studies. These results suggest a similar role for protons in the dioxygen activation reactions in soluble methane monooxygenase and related carboxylate-bridged diiron enzymes.

Project description:The gene encoding the cyanobacterial ferritin SynFtn is up-regulated in response to copper stress. Here, we show that, while SynFtn does not interact directly with copper, it is highly unusual in several ways. First, its catalytic diiron ferroxidase center is unlike those of all other characterized prokaryotic ferritins and instead resembles an animal H-chain ferritin center. Second, as demonstrated by kinetic, spectroscopic, and high-resolution X-ray crystallographic data, reaction of O2 with the di-Fe2+ center results in a direct, one-electron oxidation to a mixed-valent Fe2+/Fe3+ form. Iron-O2 chemistry of this type is currently unknown among the growing family of proteins that bind a diiron site within a four ?-helical bundle in general and ferritins in particular. The mixed-valent form, which slowly oxidized to the more usual di-Fe3+ form, is an intermediate that is continually generated during mineralization. Peroxide, rather than superoxide, is shown to be the product of O2 reduction, implying that ferroxidase centers function in pairs via long-range electron transfer through the protein resulting in reduction of O2 bound at only one of the centers. We show that electron transfer is mediated by the transient formation of a radical on Tyr40, which lies ?4 Å from the diiron center. As well as demonstrating an expansion of the iron-O2 chemistry known to occur in nature, these data are also highly relevant to the question of whether all ferritins mineralize iron via a common mechanism, providing unequivocal proof that they do not.

Project description:In the present study the Mo(0) and W(0) complexes [M(PNP)(CO)3] as well as seven-coordinate cationic hydridocarbonyl Mo(II) and W(II) complexes of the type [M(PNP)(CO)3H]+, featuring PNP pincer ligands based on 2,6-diaminopyridine, have been prepared and fully characterized. The synthesis of Mo(0) complexes [Mo(PNP)(CO)3] was accomplished by treatment of [Mo(CO)3(CH3CN)3] with the respective PNP ligands. The analogous W(0) complexes were prepared by reduction of the bromocarbonyl complexes [W(PNP)(CO)3Br]+ with NaHg. These intermediates were obtained from the known dinuclear complex [W(CO)4(?-Br)Br]2, prepared in situ from W(CO)6 and stoichiometric amounts of Br2. Addition of HBF4 to [M(PNP)(CO)3] resulted in clean protonation at the molybdenum and tungsten centers to generate the Mo(II) and W(II) hydride complexes [M(PNP)(CO)3H]+. The protonation is fully reversible, and upon addition of NEt3 as base the Mo(0) and W(0) complexes [M(PNP)(CO)3] are regenerated quantitatively. All heptacoordinate complexes exhibit fluxional behavior in solution. The mechanism of the dynamic process of the hydrido carbonyl complexes was investigated by means of DFT calculations, revealing that it occurs in a single step. The structures of representative complexes were determined by X-ray single-crystal analyses.

Project description:A family of Re(I) carbonyl complexes of general formula [ReX(CO)3(phen)]0/1+ (where X = Cl-, CF3SO3-, MeCN, PPh3, and methylimidazole) derived from 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) exhibits variable emission characteristics depending on the presence of the sixth ancillary ligand/group (X). All complexes but with X = MeCN exhibit moderate CO release upon irradiation with low-power UV light and are indefinitely stable in anaerobic/aerobic environment in solution as well as in solid state when kept under dark condition. These CO donors liberate three, one, or no CO depending on the nature of sixth ligand upon illumination as studied with the aid of time-dependent IR spectroscopy. Results of excited-state density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations provided insight into the origin of the emission characteristics of these complexes. The luminescent rheinum(I) photoCORMs uniformly displayed efficient cellular internalization by the human breast adenocarcinoma cells, MDA-MB-231, while the complex with PPh3 as ancillary ligand showed moderate nuclear localization in addition to the cytosolic distribution. These species hold significant promise as theranostic photoCORMs (photoinduced CO releasing molecules), where the entry of the pro-drug can be tracked within the cellular matrices.

Project description:The complexes Fe2(pdt)(CNR)6 (pdt(2-) = CH2(CH2S(-))2) were prepared by thermal substitution of the hexacarbonyl complex with the isocyanides RNC for R = C6H4-4-OMe (1), C6H4-4-Cl (2), Me (3). These complexes represent electron-rich analogues of the parent Fe2(pdt)(CO)6. Unlike most substituted derivatives of Fe2(pdt)(CO)6, these isocyanide complexes are sterically unencumbered and have the same idealized symmetry as the parent hexacarbonyl derivatives. Like the hexacarbonyls, the stereodynamics of 1-3 involve both turnstile rotation of the Fe(CNR)3 as well as the inversion of the chair conformation of the pdt ligand. Structural studies indicate that the basal isocyanide has nonlinear CNC bonds and short Fe-C distances, indicating that they engage in stronger Fe-C ?-backbonding than the apical ligands. Cyclic voltammetry reveals that these new complexes are far more reducing than the hexacarbonyls, although the redox behavior is complex. Estimated reduction potentials are E1/2 ? -0.6 ([2](+/0)), -0.7 ([1](+/0)), and -1.25 ([3](+/0)). According to DFT calculations, the rotated isomer of 3 is only 2.2 kcal/mol higher in energy than the crystallographically observed unrotated structure. The effects of rotated versus unrotated structure and of solvent coordination (THF, MeCN) on redox potentials were assessed computationally. These factors shift the redox couple by as much as 0.25 V, usually less. Compounds 1 and 2 protonate with strong acids to give the expected ?-hydrides [H1](+) and [H2](+). In contrast, 3 protonates with [HNEt3]BAr(F)4 (pKa(MeCN) = 18.7) to give the aminocarbyne [Fe2(pdt)(CNMe)5(?-CN(H)Me)](+) ([3H](+)). According to NMR measurements and DFT calculations, this species adopts an unsymmetrical, rotated structure. DFT calculations further indicate that the previously described carbyne complex [Fe2(SMe)2(CO)3(PMe3)2(CCF3)](+) also adopts a rotated structure with a bridging carbyne ligand. Complex [3H](+) reversibly adds MeNC to give [Fe2(pdt)(CNR)6(?-CN(H)Me)](+) ([3H(CNMe)](+)). Near room temperature, [3H](+) isomerizes to the hydride [(?-H)Fe2(pdt)(CNMe)6](+) ([H3](+)) via a first-order pathway.

Project description:A growing subset of metalloenzymes activates dioxygen with nonheme diiron active sites to effect substrate oxidations that range from the hydroxylation of methane and the desaturation of fatty acids to the deformylation of fatty aldehydes to produce alkanes and the six-electron oxidation of aminoarenes to nitroarenes in the biosynthesis of antibiotics. A common feature of their reaction mechanisms is the formation of O2 adducts that evolve into more reactive derivatives such as diiron(II,III)-superoxo, diiron(III)-peroxo, diiron(III,IV)-oxo, and diiron(IV)-oxo species, which carry out particular substrate oxidation tasks. In this review, we survey the various enzymes belonging to this unique subset and the mechanisms by which substrate oxidation is carried out. We examine the nature of the reactive intermediates, as revealed by X-ray crystallography and the application of various spectroscopic methods and their associated reactivity. We also discuss the structural and electronic properties of the model complexes that have been found to mimic salient aspects of these enzyme active sites. Much has been learned in the past 25 years, but key questions remain to be answered.

Project description:Carboxylate-bridged diiron(II) centers activate dioxygen for the selective oxidation of hydrocarbon substrates in bacterial multicomponent monooxygenases. Synthetic analogues of these systems exist in which substrate fragments tethered to the diiron(II) core through attachment to an N-donor ligand are oxidized by transient species that arise following the introduction of O2 into the system. The present study describes the results of experiments designed to probe mechanistic details of these oxidative N-dealkylation reactions. A series of diiron(II) complexes with ligands N,N-(4-R-Bn)Bnen, where en is ethylenediamine, Bn is benzyl, and R-Bn is benzyl with a para-directing group R = Cl, F, CH3, t-Bu, or OCH3, were prepared. A Hammett plot of the oxygenation product distributions of these complexes, determined by gas chromatographic analysis, reveals a small positive slope of rho = +0.48. Kinetic isotope effect (KIE(intra)) values for oxygenation of [Fe2(mu-O2CAr(Tol))2(O2CAr(Tol))2(N,N-(C6H5CDH)2en)2] and [Fe2(mu-O2CAr(Tol))2(O2CAr(Tol))2(N,N-(C6H5CD2)(C6H5CH2)en)2] are 1.3(1) and 2.2(2) at 23 degrees C, respectively. The positive slope rho and low KIE(intra) values are consistent with a mechanism involving one-electron transfer from the dangling nitrogen atom in N,N-Bn2en to a transient electrophilic diiron intermediate, followed by proton transfer and rearrangement to eliminate benzaldehyde.
