A meta-analysis of the mechanical properties of ice-templated ceramics and metals.

ABSTRACT: Ice templating, also known as freeze casting, is a popular shaping route for macroporous materials. Over the past 15 years, it has been widely applied to various classes of materials, and in particular ceramics. Many formulation and process parameters, often interdependent, affect the outcome. It is thus difficult to understand the various relationships between these parameters from isolated studies where only a few of these parameters have been investigated. We report here the results of a meta analysis of the structural and mechanical properties of ice templated materials from an exhaustive collection of records. We use these results to identify which parameters are the most critical to control the structure and properties, and to derive guidelines for optimizing the mechanical response of ice templated materials. We hope these results will be a helpful guide to anyone interested in such materials.

Ice-templated synthesis of multifunctional three dimensional graphene/noble metal nanocomposites and their mechanical, electrical, catalytic, and electromagnetic shielding properties.

Project description:In-situ homogeneous dispersion of noble metals in three-dimensional graphene sheets is a key tactic for producing macroscopic architecture, which is desirable for practical applications, such as electromagnetic interference shielding and catalyst. We report a one-step greener approach for developing porous architecture of 3D-graphene/noble metal (Pt and Ag) nanocomposite monoliths. The resulting graphene/noble metal nanocomposites exhibit a combination of ultralow density, excellent elasticity, and good electrical conductivity. Moreover, in order to illuminate the advantages of the 3D-graphene/noble metal nanocomposites, their electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding and electrocatalytic performance are further investigated. The as-synthesized 3D-graphene/noble metal nanocomposites exhibit excellent EMI shielding effectiveness when compared to bare graphene; the effectiveness has an average of 28 dB in the 8.2-12.4 GHz X-band range. In the electro-oxidation of methanol, the 3D-graphene/Pt nanocomposite also exhibits significantly enhanced electrocatalytic performance and stability than compared to reduced graphene oxide/Pt and commercial Pt/C.

Mechanical properties and failure behavior of unidirectional porous ceramics.

Project description:We show that the honeycomb out-of-plane model derived by Gibson and Ashby can be applied to describe the compressive behavior of unidirectional porous materials. Ice-templating allowed us to process samples with accurate control over pore volume, size, and morphology. These samples allowed us to evaluate the effect of this microstructural variations on the compressive strength in a porosity range of 45-80%. The maximum strength of 286 MPa was achieved in the least porous ice-templated sample (P(%) = 49.9), with the smallest pore size (3 μm). We found that the out-of-plane model only holds when buckling is the dominant failure mode, as should be expected. Furthermore, we controlled total pore volume by adjusting solids loading and sintering temperature. This strategy allows us to independently control macroporosity and densification of walls, and the compressive strength of ice-templated materials is exclusively dependent on total pore volume.

Metals by Micro-Scale Additive Manufacturing: Comparison of Microstructure and Mechanical Properties.

Project description:Many emerging applications in microscale engineering rely on the fabrication of 3D architectures in inorganic materials. Small-scale additive manufacturing (AM) aspires to provide flexible and facile access to these geometries. Yet, the synthesis of device-grade inorganic materials is still a key challenge toward the implementation of AM in microfabrication. Here, a comprehensive overview of the microstructural and mechanical properties of metals fabricated by most state-of-the-art AM methods that offer a spatial resolution ≤10 μm is presented. Standardized sets of samples are studied by cross-sectional electron microscopy, nanoindentation, and microcompression. It is shown that current microscale AM techniques synthesize metals with a wide range of microstructures and elastic and plastic properties, including materials of dense and crystalline microstructure with excellent mechanical properties that compare well to those of thin-film nanocrystalline materials. The large variation in materials' performance can be related to the individual microstructure, which in turn is coupled to the various physico-chemical principles exploited by the different printing methods. The study provides practical guidelines for users of small-scale additive methods and establishes a baseline for the future optimization of the properties of printed metallic objects-a significant step toward the potential establishment of AM techniques in microfabrication.

Ice-Templated Protein Nanoridges Induce Bone Tissue Formation.

Project description:Little is known about the role of biocompatible protein nanoridges in directing stem cell fate and tissue regeneration due to the difficulty in forming protein nanoridges. Here an ice-templating approach is proposed to produce semi-parallel pure silk protein nanoridges. The key to this approach is that water droplets formed in the protein films are frozen into ice crystals (removed later by sublimation), pushing the surrounding protein molecules to be assembled into nanoridges. Unlike the flat protein films, the unique protein nanoridges can induce the differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into osteoblasts without any additional inducers, as well as the formation of bone tissue in a subcutaneous rat model even when not seeded with MSCs. Moreover, the nanoridged films induce less inflammatory infiltration than the flat films in vivo. This work indicates that decorating biomaterials surfaces with protein nanoridges can enhance bone tissue formation in bone repair.

Ice-Templated W-Cu Composites with High Anisotropy.

Project description:Controlling anisotropy in self-assembled structures enables engineering of materials with highly directional response. Here, we harness the anisotropic growth of ice walls in a thermal gradient to assemble an anisotropic refractory metal structure, which is then infiltrated with Cu to make a composite. Using experiments and simulations, we demonstrate on the specific example of tungsten-copper composites the effect of anisotropy on the electrical and mechanical properties. The measured strength and resistivity are compared to isotropic tungsten-copper composites fabricated by standard powder metallurgical methods. Our results have the potential to fuel the development of more efficient materials, used in electrical power grids and solar-thermal energy conversion systems. The method presented here can be used with a variety of refractory metals and ceramics, which fosters the opportunity to design and functionalize a vast class of new anisotropic load-bearing hybrid metal composites with highly directional properties.

Mechanical properties of provisional dental materials: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Project description:Provisional restorations represent an important phase during the rehabilitation process, knowledge of the mechanical properties of the available materials allows us to predict their clinical performance. At present, there is no systematic review, which supports the clinicians' criteria, in the selection of a specific material over another for a particular clinical situation. The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess and compare the mechanical properties of dimethacrylates and monomethacrylates used in fabricating direct provisional restorations, in terms of flexural strength, fracture toughness and hardness. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines. The searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, the New York Academy of Medicine Grey Literature Report and were complemented by hand-searching, with no limitation of time or language up to January 10, 2017. Studies that assess and compare the mechanical properties of dimethacrylate- and monomethacrylate-based provisional restoration materials were selected. A quality assessment of full-text articles were performed according to modified ARRIVE and CONSORT criteria and modified Cochrane Collaboration's tool for in vitro studies. Initially, 256 articles were identified. After removing the duplicates and applying the selection criteria, 24 articles were included in the qualitative synthesis and 7 were included in the quantitative synthesis (meta-analysis). It may be concluded that dimethacrylate-based provisional restorations presented better mechanical behavior than monomethacrylate-based ones in terms of flexural strength and hardness. Fracture toughness showed no significant differences. Within the monomethacrylate group, polymethylmethacrylate showed greater flexural strength than polyethylmethacrylate.

4D Bragg Edge Tomography of Directional Ice Templated Graphite Electrodes.

Project description:Bragg edge tomography was carried out on novel, ultra-thick, directional ice templated graphite electrodes for Li-ion battery cells to visualise the distribution of graphite and stable lithiation phases, namely LiC12 and LiC6. The four-dimensional Bragg edge, wavelength-resolved neutron tomography technique allowed the investigation of the crystallographic lithiation states and comparison with the electrode state of charge. The tomographic imaging technique provided insight into the crystallographic changes during de-/lithiation over the electrode thickness by mapping the attenuation curves and Bragg edge parameters with a spatial resolution of approximately 300 µm. This feasibility study was performed on the IMAT beamline at the ISIS pulsed neutron spallation source, UK, and was the first time the 4D Bragg edge tomography method was applied to Li-ion battery electrodes. The utility of the technique was further enhanced by correlation with corresponding X-ray tomography data obtained at the Diamond Light Source, UK.

Scale-Dependent Dielectric Properties in BaZr0.05Ti0.95O3 Ceramics.

Project description:In the present work, BaZr0.05Ti0.95O3 ceramics with grain sizes between 0.45 and 135 µm were prepared by solid-state reaction and classical sintering. The effect of grain size on dielectric properties was systematically explored, and it was found that dielectric permittivity reaches a maximum value for grain sizes between 1.5 and 10 µm and then rapidly drops for larger grain sizes. A numerical finite element method was employed to eliminate the effect of porosity on the effective values of permittivity. The results indicate that it is possible to have a critical size in slightly doped barium titanate ceramics with enhanced functional properties for a grain size between 1.5 and 10 µm.

Thermoresponsive composite hydrogels with aligned macroporous structure by ice-templated assembly.

Project description:Natural tissues, such as bone, tendon, and muscle, have well defined hierarchical structures, which are crucial for their biological and mechanical functions. However, mimicking these structural features still remains a great challenge. In this study, we use ice-templated assembly and UV-initiated cryo-polymerization to fabricate a novel kind of composite hydrogel which have both aligned macroporous structure at micrometer scale and a nacre-like layered structure at nanoscale. Such hydrogels are macroporous, thermoresponsive, and exhibit excellent mechanical performance (tough and high stretchable), attractive properties that are of significant impact on the wide applications of composite hydrogels, especially as tissue-engineering scaffolds. The fabrication method in this study including freeze-casting and cryo-polymerization can also be applied to other materials, which makes it promising for designing and developing smart and multifunctional composite hydrogels with hierar chical structures.

Recrystallized ice-templated electroless plating for fabricating flexible transparent copper meshes.

Project description:Flexible transparent conductors as a replacement for indium tin oxide (ITO) have been urgently pursued due to the inherent drawbacks of ITO films. Here, we report the fabrication of flexible transparent copper meshes with recrystallized ice-crystal templates. Completely different to conventional approaches, this novel method needs neither the fabrication of mesh patterns via micro/nanofabrication technologies nor the deposition of copper through evaporation or sputtering. The linewidth and mesh size of the prepared copper meshes can be regulated, as the ice recrystallization process is controllable. Therefore, the formed copper meshes have tailorable conductivity and transparency, which are critical for optoelectronic devices. Remarkably, the electrical performance of the copper meshes is maintained even after storing for 60 days in ambient conditions or bending for 1000 cycles. This strategy is modular and can also be employed to prepare other metal meshes, such as silver meshes, offering versatile substitutes for ITO in electronic devices.
