Project description:Secondary ion batteries rely on two-dimensional (2D) electrode materials with high energy density and outstanding rate capability. Rb- and Cs-ion batteries (RIBs and CIBs) are late-model batteries. Herein, using first-principles calculations, the potential performance of H-MoS2 as a 2D electrode candidate in RIBs and CIBs has been investigated. The M-top site on 2D H-MoS2 possesses the most stable metal atom binding sites, and after adsorbing Rb and Cs atoms, its Fermi level goes up to the conduction band, indicating a semiconductor-to-metal transition. The maximal theoretical capacities of RIBs and CIBs are 372.05 (comparable to those of commercial graphite-based LIBs) and 223.23 mA h g-1, respectively, due to the strong adsorption capability of H-MoS2 for Rb and Cs ions. Noticeably, the diffusion barriers of Rb and Cs on H-MoS2 are 0.037 and 0.036 eV, respectively. Such a low diffusion barrier gives MoS2-based RIBs and CIBs high rate capability. In addition, H-MoS2 also has the characteristics of suitable open-circuit voltage, low expansion, good cycle stability, low cost, and easy experimental realization. These results indicate that MoS2-based RIBs and CIBs are innovative batteries with great potential, and may provide opportunities for cross-application of energy storage and multiple disciplines.

Project description:In the present work, S doped graphitic carbon nitride (Sg-C3N4) 2D nanosheets were synthesized by performing a thermal polymerization reaction of thiourea at 500 °C. After that the surface of Sg-C3N4 was functionalized with Bi2O3/Ag composite nanoparticles via a chemical precipitation method followed by heat treatment at 330 °C. The prepared Sg-C3N4/Bi2O3/Ag ternary nanocomposites were used as a visible light active photocatalyst for catalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye and tetracycline hydrochloride, under natural solar light. The prepared ternary nanocomposites were characterized by using UV-Vis DRS, FT-IR, FESEM, EDX, TEM, XRD, photoluminescence (PL), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and XPS analytical techniques. The XRD, UV-Vis DRS and FT-IR studies clearly revealed the formation of ternary phases in the composites. From the TEM and EDX studies it was clearly observed that spherical Ag nanoparticles (5-10 nm) and irregular Bi2O3 particles (60-120 nm) were decorated on the surface of 2D S doped g-C3N4 nanosheets. XPS studies also confirmed the formation of the ternary nanocomposite system. The results from the photocatalytic degradation of RhB dye revealed that 95% of the RhB dye was decolorized within 90 min of contact time by Sg-C3N4/Bi2O3/Ag ternary nanocomposites under natural solar light. Among the different prepared photocatalysts, Sg-C3N4/Bi2O3/Ag (15%) was found to be the most efficient photocatalyst towards the decolourization of RhB dye. This result is ascribed to the optimum loading of Ag, formation of a hetero-junction between the ternary phases, more light harvesting capacity and the lowest recombination rate of charge carriers. Apart from the coloured RhB dye, the photocatalytic degradation of the non-coloured tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) compound was also studied to understand the photosensitization effect on the degradation process. Again scavenger studies were also performed in order to understand the mechanism of photodegradation. It was observed that along with the electron and hole pairs generated by light photons, hydroxide radicals play an important role in the degradation mechanism. The reusability study indicates that the photocatalysts prepared were highly stable at room temperature and can be recycled and reused for up to four successful cycles without a major loss in their performance.

Project description:Photocatalytic formation of hydrocarbons using solar energy via artificial photosynthesis is a highly desirable renewable-energy source for replacing conventional fossil fuels. Using an L-cysteine-based hydrothermal process, here we synthesize a carbon-doped SnS2 (SnS2-C) metal dichalcogenide nanostructure, which exhibits a highly active and selective photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to hydrocarbons under visible-light. The interstitial carbon doping induced microstrain in the SnS2 lattice, resulting in different photophysical properties as compared with undoped SnS2. This SnS2-C photocatalyst significantly enhances the CO2 reduction activity under visible light, attaining a photochemical quantum efficiency of above 0.7%. The SnS2-C photocatalyst represents an important contribution towards high quantum efficiency artificial photosynthesis based on gas phase photocatalytic CO2 reduction under visible light, where the in situ carbon-doped SnS2 nanostructure improves the stability and the light harvesting and charge separation efficiency, and significantly enhances the photocatalytic activity.

Project description:Scalable and sustainable solar hydrogen production through photocatalytic water splitting requires highly active and stable earth-abundant co-catalysts to replace expensive and rare platinum. Here we employ density functional theory calculations to direct atomic-level exploration, design and fabrication of a MXene material, Ti3C2 nanoparticles, as a highly efficient co-catalyst. Ti3C2 nanoparticles are rationally integrated with cadmium sulfide via a hydrothermal strategy to induce a super high visible-light photocatalytic hydrogen production activity of 14,342??mol?h-1?g-1 and an apparent quantum efficiency of 40.1% at 420?nm. This high performance arises from the favourable Fermi level position, electrical conductivity and hydrogen evolution capacity of Ti3C2 nanoparticles. Furthermore, Ti3C2 nanoparticles also serve as an efficient co-catalyst on ZnS or ZnxCd1-xS. This work demonstrates the potential of earth-abundant MXene family materials to construct numerous high performance and low-cost photocatalysts/photoelectrodes.

Project description:Using a phenoxazine-based organic photosensitizer and an iron porphyrin molecular catalyst, we demonstrated photochemical reduction of CO2 to CO and CH4 with turnover numbers (TONs) of 149 and 29, respectively, under visible-light irradiation (λ > 435 nm) with a tertiary amine as sacrificial electron donor. This work is the first example of a molecular system using an earth-abundant metal catalyst and an organic dye to effect complete 8e-/8H+ reduction of CO2 to CH4, as opposed to typical 2e-/2H+ products of CO or formic acid. The catalytic system continuously produced methane even after prolonged irradiation up to 4 days. Using CO as the feedstock, the same reactive system was able to produce CH4 with 85% selectivity, 80 TON and a quantum yield of 0.47%. The redox properties of the organic photosensitizer and acidity of the proton source were shown to play a key role in driving the 8e-/8H+ processes.

Project description:Extensive investigation of the passivating agents has been performed to suppress the perovskite defects. However, very few attentions have been paid to rationally design the passivating agents for the balance of the carrier confinement and transfer in quasi-2D perovskites, which is essential to achieve high-performance perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs). In this work, tributylphosphine oxide (TBPO) with moderate carbon chain length is demonstrated as a decent passivator for the quasi-2D perovskites by strengthening the carrier confinement for massive radiative recombination within the perovskites, and more importantly providing efficient carrier transfer in the quasi-2D perovskites. Benefiting from these interesting optoelectronic properties of TBPO-incorporated perovskites, we achieve high-efficient blue PeLEDs with an external quantum efficiency up to 11.5% and operational stability as long as 41.1 min without any shift of the electroluminescence spectra. Consequently, this work contributes an effective approach to promote the carrier confinement and transfer for high-performance and stable blue PeLEDs.

Project description:Photocatalytic conversion of CO2 into transportable fuels such as formic acid (HCOOH) under sunlight is an attractive solution to the shortage of energy and carbon resources as well as to the increase in Earth's atmospheric CO2 concentration. The use of abundant elements as the components of a photocatalytic CO2 reduction system is important, and a solid catalyst that is active, recyclable, nontoxic, and inexpensive is strongly demanded. Here, we show that a widespread soil mineral, alpha-iron(III) oxyhydroxide (α-FeOOH; goethite), loaded onto an Al2 O3 support, functions as a recyclable catalyst for a photocatalytic CO2 reduction system under visible light (λ>400 nm) in the presence of a RuII photosensitizer and an electron donor. This system gave HCOOH as the main product with 80-90 % selectivity and an apparent quantum yield of 4.3 % at 460 nm, as confirmed by isotope tracer experiments with 13 CO2 . The present work shows that the use of a proper support material is another method of catalyst activation toward the selective reduction of CO2 .

Project description:Introduction: Semiconductors have similar crystal structures and matched energy levels could form a coupled heterojunction at an interface between them which may allow response to visible light, achieving efficient decomposition of organic compounds. Methods: The Bi2O2CO3/BiOI (BOC/BOI) with 2D/2D p-n heterojunction was prepared by one-pot room-temperature strategy. The prepared materials were tested by various technologies, and the three-dimensional structure, light absorption properties, electrochemical properties and other information were obtained. Photocatalytic tests have also been carried out. Results and discussion: BOC/BOI heterojunction with oxygen vacancies showed much higher photocatalytic activity than pure BOC and BOI. For example, the preferred BOC/BOI-0.5 heterojunction of the degradation rate for Rhodamine B (RhB) is 97.6 % within 2 h, which is 15.8 and 2.2 times faster than that of BiOI and BOC. In addition, the removal rates of tetracycline, ciprofloxacin and bisphenol A by BOC/ BOI-0.5 were 92.4, 80.3 and 68.6%, respectively. The 2D/2D structures of BOC/BOI-0.5 with rich in oxygen vacancies combined p-n junction can effectively inhibit the photoinduced electron-hole pair recombination and increase the production of active free radicals. The O2- and h+ are the main reactants, giving the composite catalyst potential for degrading a variety of pollutants.

Project description:In the present study, we synthesized several high-surface area V2O5/TiO2-SiO2 catalysts (vanado titanium silicate, VTS). The synthesized materials were characterized by PXRD, FE-SEM/EDAX, TEM, FTIR, UV-Vis, XPS, fluorescence and photocatalytic activity studies. The small-angle powder X-ray diffraction pattern shows that the 110 and 200 planes are merged to become a single broad peak. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy shows that the titanosilicate is spherical in shape and V2O5 has a hexagonal rod-shaped morphology. The presence of various metal ions, such as V, Ti, Si and O, was observed by energy dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The transmission electron microscopy image shows clear hexagonal mesoporous fringes with V2O5 distribution. The BET surface area analysis shows that the VTS catalysts have higher surface areas than pure V2O5. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis shows the presence of Ti4+ ions connected to the silanol groups. The bandwidths of pure titanosilicate, V2O5 and their composites were calculated from their diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible spectra. The bandwidth was tuned by heterojunctions in the studied catalysts. The photoluminescence spectra of the VTS catalysts show a distinct behaviour as compared to those of the pure components. The photocatalytic activity of methylene blue degradation was determined with pure constituents and catalysts. VTS-1 (TS and VO weight ratio 2 : 1) shows higher conversion than other catalysts, pure titanosilicate and V2O5. This is probably due to the heterojunctions and higher surface area in VTS-1. Kinetic studies reveal that direct sunlight shows higher activity than pure visible light. A plausible physical and chemical mechanism for the photocatalytic activity is proposed.
