Project description:Changes of molecular spin are ubiquitous in chemistry and biology. Among spin flip processes, one of the fastest is intersystem crossing (ISC) in transition metal complexes. Here, we investigate the spin relaxation dynamics and emission spectrum of [Re(CO)3(im)(phen)]+ (im = imidazole, phen = phenanthroline) using extensive full-dimensional excited-state dynamics simulations in explicit aqueous solution. Contrary to what has been observed in other transition metal complexes, the transition from the singlet to triplet states occurs via a two-step process, with clearly separable electronic and nuclear-driven components with two different time scales. The initially excited electronic wave function is a "molecular spin-orbit wave packet" that evolves almost instantaneously, with an 8 fs time constant, into an approximate 25?:?75 singlet-to-triplet equilibrium. Surprisingly, this ISC process is an order of magnitude faster than it was previously documented for this and other rhenium(i) carbonyl diimine complexes from emission spectra. Simulations including explicit laser field interactions evidence that few-cycle UV laser pulses are required to follow the creation and evolution of such molecular spin-orbit wave packets. The analysis of the dynamics also reveals a retarded ISC component, with a time constant of 420 fs, which can be explained invoking intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution. The emission spectrum is shown to be characterized by ISC convoluted with internal conversion and vibrational relaxation. These results provide fundamental understanding of ultrafast intersystem crossing in transition metal complexes.

Project description:A re-refinement of 4xan, hen egg-white lysozyme (HEWL) with carboplatin crystallized in NaBr solution, has been made and is published here as an addendum to Tanley et al. [(2014), Acta Cryst. F70, 1135-1142]. This follows a previous re-refinement and PDB deposition (4yem) by Shabalin et al. [(2015), Acta Cryst. D71, 1965-1979]. The critical evaluation of the original PDB deposition (4xan), and the subsequent critical examination of the re-refined structure (4yem), has led to an improved model (PDB code 5hmj).

Project description:We study Re analogues of (99m)Tc renal agents to interpret previous results at the (99m)Tc tracer level. The relative propensities of amine donors versus carboxylate oxygen donors of four L = polyaminocarboxylate ligands to coordinate in fac-[Re(I)(CO)(3)L](n) complexes were assessed by examining the reaction of fac-[Re(I)(CO)(3)(H(2)O)(3)](+) under conditions differing in acidity and temperature. All four L [N,N-bis-(2-aminoethyl)glycine (DTGH), N,N-ethylenediaminediacetic acid, diethylenetriamine-N-malonic acid, and diethylenetriamine-N-acetic acid] can coordinate as tridentate ligands while creating a dangling chain terminated in a carboxyl group. Dangling carboxyl groups facilitate renal clearance in fac-[(99m)Tc(I)(CO)(3)L](n) agents. Under neutral conditions, the four ligands each gave two fac-[Re(I)(CO)(3)L](n) products with HPLC traces correlating well with known traces of the fac-[(99m)Tc(I)(CO)(3)L](n) mixtures. Such mixtures are common in renal agents because the needed dangling carboxyl group can compete for a coordination site. However, the HPLC separations needed to assess the biodistribution of a single tracer are impractical in a clinical setting. One goal in investigating this Re chemistry is to identify conditions for avoiding this problem of mixtures in preparations of fac-[(99m)Tc(I)(CO)(3)L](n) renal tracers. After separation and isolation of the fac-[Re(I)(CO)(3)L](n) products, NMR analysis of all products and single crystal X-ray crystallographic analysis of both DTGH products, as well as one product each from the other L, allowed us to establish coordination mode unambiguously. The product favored in acidic conditions has a dangling amine chain and more bound oxygen. The product favored in basic conditions has a dangling carboxyl chain and more bound nitrogen. At the elevated temperatures used for simulating tracer preparation, equilibration was facile (ca. 1 h or less), allowing selective formation of one product by utilizing acidic or basic conditions. The results of this fundamental study offer protocols and guidance useful for the design and preparation of fac-[(99m)Tc(I)(CO)(3)L](n) agents consisting of a single tracer.

Project description:We demonstrate that Ru(II)(CO)2-protein complexes, formed by the reaction of the hydrolytic decomposition products of [fac-RuCl(?(2)-H2NCH2CO2)(CO)3] (CORM-3) with histidine residues exposed on the surface of proteins, spontaneously release CO in aqueous solution, cells, and mice. CO release was detected by mass spectrometry (MS) and confocal microscopy using a CO-responsive turn-on fluorescent probe. These findings support our hypothesis that plasma proteins act as CO carriers after in?vivo administration of CORM-3. CO released from a synthetic bovine serum albumin (BSA)-Ru(II)(CO)2 complex leads to downregulation of the cytokines interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-? in cancer cells. Finally, administration of BSA-Ru(II)(CO)2 in mice bearing a colon carcinoma tumor results in enhanced CO accumulation at the tumor. Our data suggest the use of Ru(II)(CO)2-protein complexes as viable alternatives for the safe and spatially controlled delivery of therapeutic CO in?vivo.

Project description:In solution, half-cell potentials are measured relative to other half-cells resulting in a ladder of thermodynamic values that is anchored to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE), which is assigned an arbitrary value of exactly 0 V. A new method for measuring the absolute SHE potential is introduced in which reduction energies of Eu(H(2)O)(n)(3+), from n = 55 to 140, are extrapolated as a function of the geometric dependence of the cluster reduction energy to infinite size. These measurements make it possible to directly relate absolute reduction energies of these gaseous nanodrops containing Eu(3+) to the absolute reduction enthalpy of this ion in bulk solution. From this value, an absolute SHE potential of +4.11 V and a real proton solvation energy of -269.0 kcal/mol are obtained. The infrared photodissociation spectrum of Eu(H(2)O)(119-124)(3+) indicates that the structure of the surface of the nanodrops is similar to that at the bulk air-water interface and that the hydrogen bonding of interior water molecules is similar to that in aqueous solution. These results suggest that the environment of Eu(3+) in these nanodrops and the surface potential of the nandrops are comparable to those of the condensed phase. This method for obtaining absolute potentials of redox couples has the advantage that no explicit solvation model is required, which eliminates uncertainties associated with these models, making this method potentially more accurate than previous methods.

Project description:In a conventional photocatalytic or photochemical process, either a photocatalyst or a molecule is excited by irradiation light that has energy greater than the forbidden band (i.e., the band gap) of the semiconductor or the transition energy of an excited state of the molecule, respectively, for a reaction to occur. However, in this work, we found that a considerable amount of H2 can be generated from a CH3OH-H2O solution at a quartz surface using light with energy far outside the electronic absorbance range of the CH3OH-H2O solution; this process should not occur in principle via either conventional photocatalysis or a photochemical process. The H2 production was further confirmed using 266 nm and 355 nm lasers as light sources. Our work demonstrates that photo-induced H2 production can occur on insulator surfaces (e.g., quartz), which were commonly believed to be inert, and will shed light on the surface nature of insulators.

Project description:The strength of hydrogen bonding to and structure of hydrated oxometallate ions in aqueous solution have been studied by double difference infrared (DDIR) spectroscopy and large-angle X-ray scattering (LAXS), respectively. Anions are hydrated by accepting hydrogen bonds from the hydrating water molecules. The oxygen atom of the permanganate and perrhenate ions form weaker and longer hydrogen bonds to water than the hydrogen bonds in bulk water (i.e., they act as structure breakers), while the oxygen atoms of the chromate, dichromate, molybdate, tungstate, and hydrogenvanadate ions form hydrogen bonds stronger than those in bulk water (i.e., they act as structure makers). The oxometallate ions form one hydration shell distinguishable from bulk water as determined by DDIR spectroscopy and LAXS. The hydration of oxoanions results in X-O bond distances ca. 0.02 Å longer than those in unsolvated ions in the solid state not involved in strong bonding to counterions. The oxygens of oxoanions with a central atom from the second and third series in the periodic table and the hydrogenvanadate ion hydrogen bind three hydrating water molecules, while oxygens of oxoanions with a heavier central atom only form hydrogen bonds to two water molecules.

Project description:Carbonic acid (H2CO3) forms in small amounts when CO2 dissolves in H2O, yet decomposes rapidly under ambient conditions of temperature and pressure. Despite its fleeting existence, H2CO3 plays an important role in the global carbon cycle and in biological carbonate-containing systems. The short lifetime in water and presumed low concentration under all terrestrial conditions has stifled study of this fundamental species. Here, we have examined CO2/H2O mixtures under conditions of high pressure and high temperature to explore the potential for reaction to H2CO3 inside celestial bodies. We present a novel method to prepare solid H2CO3 by heating CO2/H2O mixtures at high pressure with a CO2 laser. Furthermore, we found that, contrary to present understanding, neutral H2CO3 is a significant component in aqueous CO2 solutions above 2.4?GPa and 110?°C as identified by IR-absorption and Raman spectroscopy. This is highly significant for speciation of deep C-O-H fluids with potential consequences for fluid-carbonate-bearing rock interactions. As conditions inside subduction zones on Earth appear to be most favorable for production of aqueous H2CO3, a role in subduction related phenomena is inferred.

Project description:This work demonstrates photocatalytic CO2 reduction by a noble-metal-free photosensitizer-catalyst system in aqueous solution under red-light irradiation. A water-soluble Mn(I) tricarbonyl diimine complex, [MnBr(4,4'-{Et2O3PCH2}2-2,2'-bipyridyl)(CO)3] (1), has been fully characterized, including single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and shown to reduce CO2 to CO following photosensitization by tetra(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphyrin Zn(II) tetrachloride [Zn(TMPyP)]Cl4 (2) under 625 nm irradiation. This is the first example of 2 employed as a photosensitizer for CO2 reduction. The incorporation of -P(O)(OEt)2 groups, decoupled from the core of the catalyst by a -CH2- spacer, afforded water solubility without compromising the electronic properties of the catalyst. The photostability of the active Mn(I) catalyst over prolonged periods of irradiation with red light was confirmed by 1H and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopy. This first report on Mn(I) species as a homogeneous photocatalyst, working in water and under red light, illustrates further future prospects of intrinsically photounstable Mn(I) complexes as solar-driven catalysts in an aqueous environment.

Project description:A series of novel Fe-Cd co-doped ZnO nanoparticle based photocatalysts are successfully synthesized by sol-gel route and characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray emission (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques. The photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanoparticles doped with various atomic weight fraction of Fe and Cd has been investigated under visible light irradiation using the Methylene Blue and Rhodamine B dye in aqueous solution. The FeCd (2%):ZnO (ZFC-1) exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity in terms of rate constant as KMB = 0.01153 min-1 and KRhB = 0.00916 min-1). Further, the re-usability of the ZFC-1 photocatalyst is studied which confirms that it can be reused up to five times with nearly negligible loss of the photocatalytic efficiency. Moreover, the role of photoactive species investigated using a radical scavenger technique. The present investigations show that the doping concentration plays significant role in photocatalytic performance. The visible light absorption shown by Fe-Cd co-doped ZnO nanoparticles is much higher than that of undoped body probably due to co-doping, and the charge carrier recombination is decreased effectively which yields a higher photocatalytic performance. The mechanism for the enhancement of photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation is also proposed.
