Trapped charge-driven degradation of perovskite solar cells.

ABSTRACT: Perovskite solar cells have shown unprecedent performance increase up to 22% efficiency. However, their photovoltaic performance has shown fast deterioration under light illumination in the presence of humid air even with encapulation. The stability of perovskite materials has been unsolved and its mechanism has been elusive. Here we uncover a mechanism for irreversible degradation of perovskite materials in which trapped charges, regardless of the polarity, play a decisive role. An experimental setup using different polarity ions revealed that the moisture-induced irreversible dissociation of perovskite materials is triggered by charges trapped along grain boundaries. We also identified the synergetic effect of oxygen on the process of moisture-induced degradation. The deprotonation of organic cations by trapped charge-induced local electric field would be attributed to the initiation of irreversible decomposition.

Degradation Kinetics of Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:We explore the degradation behaviour under continuous illumination and direct oxygen exposure of inverted unencapsulated formamidinium(FA)0.83Cs0.17Pb(I0.8Br0.2)3, CH3NH3PbI3, and CH3NH3PbI3-xClx perovskite solar cells. We continuously test the devices in-situ and in-operando with current-voltage sweeps, transient photocurrent, and transient photovoltage measurements, and find that degradation in the CH3NH3PbI3-xClx solar cells due to oxygen exposure occurs over shorter timescales than FA0.83Cs0.17Pb(I0.8Br0.2)3 mixed-cation devices. We attribute these oxygen-induced losses in the power conversion efficiencies to the formation of electron traps within the perovskite photoactive layer. Our results highlight that the formamidinium-caesium mixed-cation perovskites are much less sensitive to oxygen-induced degradation than the methylammonium-based perovskite cells, and that further improvements in perovskite solar cell stability should focus on the mitigation of trap generation during ageing.

UV Degradation and Recovery of Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Although the power conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells has increased from 3.81% to 22.1% in just 7 years, they still suffer from stability issues, as they degrade upon exposure to moisture, UV light, heat, and bias voltage. We herein examined the degradation of perovskite solar cells in the presence of UV light alone. The cells were exposed to 365 nm UV light for over 1,000 h under inert gas at <0.5 ppm humidity without encapsulation. 1-sun illumination after UV degradation resulted in recovery of the fill factor and power conversion efficiency. Furthermore, during exposure to consecutive UV light, the diminished short circuit current density (Jsc) and EQE continuously restored. 1-sun light soaking induced recovery is considered to be caused by resolving of stacked charges and defect state neutralization. The Jsc and EQE bounce-back phenomenon is attributed to the beneficial effects of PbI2 which is generated by the decomposition of perovskite material.

High efficiency perovskite quantum dot solar cells with charge separating heterostructure.

Project description:Metal halide perovskite semiconductors possess outstanding characteristics for optoelectronic applications including but not limited to photovoltaics. Low-dimensional and nanostructured motifs impart added functionality which can be exploited further. Moreover, wider cation composition tunability and tunable surface ligand properties of colloidal quantum dot (QD) perovskites now enable unprecedented device architectures which differ from thin-film perovskites fabricated from solvated molecular precursors. Here, using layer-by-layer deposition of perovskite QDs, we demonstrate solar cells with abrupt compositional changes throughout the perovskite film. We utilize this ability to abruptly control composition to create an internal heterojunction that facilitates charge separation at the internal interface leading to improved photocarrier harvesting. We show how the photovoltaic performance depends upon the heterojunction position, as well as the composition of each component, and we describe an architecture that greatly improves the performance of perovskite QD photovoltaics.

Modulation of perovskite degradation with multiple-barrier for light-heat stable perovskite solar cells.

Project description:The long-term stability of perovskite solar cells remains one of the most important challenges for the commercialization of this emerging photovoltaic technology. Here, we adopt a non-noble metal/metal oxide/polymer multiple-barrier to suppress the halide consumption and gaseous perovskite decomposition products release with the chemically inert bismuth electrode and Al2O3/parylene thin-film encapsulation, as well as the tightly closed system created by the multiple-barrier to jointly suppress the degradation of perovskite solar cells, allowing the corresponding decomposition reactions to reach benign equilibria. The resulting encapsulated formamidinium cesium-based perovskite solar cells with multiple-barrier maintain 90% of their initial efficiencies after continuous operation at 45 °C for 5200 h and 93% of their initial efficiency after continuous operation at 75 °C for 1000 h under 1 sun equivalent white-light LED illumination.

Improved charge carrier lifetime in planar perovskite solar cells by bromine doping.

Project description:The charge carrier lifetime is an important parameter in solar cells as it defines, together with the mobility, the diffusion length of the charge carriers, thus directly determining the optimal active layer thickness of a device. Herein, we report on charge carrier lifetime values in bromine doped planar methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) solar cells determined by transient photovoltage. The corresponding charge carrier density has been derived from charge carrier extraction. We found increased lifetime values in solar cells incorporating bromine compared to pure MAPbI3 by a factor of ~2.75 at an illumination intensity corresponding to 1 sun. In the bromine containing solar cells we additionally observe an anomalously high value of extracted charge, which we deduce to originate from mobile ions.

Antiferroelectric Nature of CH3NH3PbI3-xClx Perovskite and Its Implication for Charge Separation in Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been attracted scientific interest due to high performance. Some researchers have suggested anomalous behavior of PSCs to the polarizations due to the ion migration or ferroelectric behavior. Experimental results and theoretical calculations have suggested the possibility of ferroelectricity in organic-inorganic perovskite. However, still no studies have been concretely discarded the ferroelectric nature of perovskite absorbers in PSCs. Hysteresis of P-E (polarization-electric field) loops is an important evidence to confirm the ferroelectricity. In this study, P-E loop measurements, in-depth structural study, analyses of dielectric behavior and the phase transitions of CH3NH3PbI3-xClx perovskite were carried out and investigated. The results suggest that CH3NH3PbI3-xClx perovskite is in an antiferroelectric phase at room temperature. The antiferroelectric phase can be switched to ferroelectric phase by the poling treatment and exhibits ferroelectric-like hysteresis P-E loops and dielectric behavior around room temperature; namely, the perovskite can generate a ferroelectric polarization under PSCs operating conditions. Furthermore, we also discuss the implications of ferroelectric polarization on PSCs charge separation.

Light-activated photocurrent degradation and self-healing in perovskite solar cells.

Project description:Solution-processed organometallic perovskite solar cells have emerged as one of the most promising thin-film photovoltaic technology. However, a key challenge is their lack of stability over prolonged solar irradiation. Few studies have investigated the effect of light soaking on hybrid perovskites and have attributed the degradation in the optoelectronic properties to photochemical or field-assisted ion migration. Here we show that the slow photocurrent degradation in thin-film photovoltaic devices is due to the formation of light-activated meta-stable deep-level trap states. However, the devices can self-heal completely by resting them in the dark for <1 min or the degradation can be completely prevented by operating the devices at 0 °C. We investigate several physical mechanisms to explain the microscopic origin for the formation of these trap states, among which the creation of small polaronic states involving localized cooperative lattice strain and molecular orientations emerges as a credible microscopic mechanism requiring further detailed studies.

Charge Injection, Carriers Recombination and HOMO Energy Level Relationship in Perovskite Solar Cells.

Project description:We present a comparative study between a series of well-known semiconductor polymers, used in efficient organic solar cells as hole transport materials (HTM), and the state-of-the art material used as hole transport material in perovskite solar cells: the spiro-OMeTAD. The observed differences in solar cell efficiencies are studied in depth using advanced photoinduced spectroscopic techniques under working illumination conditions. We have observed that there is no correlation between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels of the organic semiconductors and the measured open-circuit voltage (VOC). For instance, spiro-OMeTAD and P3HT have a comparable HOMO level of ~5.2?eV vs vacuum even though a difference in VOC of around 200?mV is recorded. This difference is in good agreement with the shift observed for the charge vs voltage measurements. Moreover, hole transfer from the perovskite to the HTM, estimated qualitatively from fluorescence quenching and emission lifetime, seems less efficient for the polymeric HTMs. Finally, the recombination currents from all devices were estimated by using the measured charge (calculated using photoinduced differential charging) and the carriers' lifetime and their value resulted in accordance with the registered short-circuit currents (JSC) at 1 sun.

Dipole-field-assisted charge extraction in metal-perovskite-metal back-contact solar cells.

Project description:Hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites are low-cost solution-processable solar cell materials with photovoltaic properties that rival those of crystalline silicon. The perovskite films are typically sandwiched between thin layers of hole and electron transport materials, which efficiently extract photogenerated charges. This affords high-energy conversion efficiencies but results in significant performance and fabrication challenges. Herein we present a simple charge transport layer-free perovskite solar cell, comprising only a perovskite layer with two interdigitated gold back-contacts. Charge extraction is achieved via self-assembled monolayers and their associated dipole fields at the metal-perovskite interface. Photovoltages of ~600 mV generated by self-assembled molecular monolayer modified perovskite solar cells are equivalent to the built-in potential generated by individual dipole layers. Efficient charge extraction results in photocurrents of up to 12.1 mA cm-2 under simulated sunlight, despite a large electrode spacing.Simplified device concepts may become important for the development of low cost photovoltaics. Lin et al. report solar cells based on interdigitated gold back-contacts and metal halide perovskites where charge extraction is assisted via a dipole field generated by self-assembled molecular monolayers.

Diffusion engineering of ions and charge carriers for stable efficient perovskite solar cells.

Project description:Long-term stability is crucial for the future application of perovskite solar cells, a promising low-cost photovoltaic technology that has rapidly advanced in the recent years. Here, we designed a nanostructured carbon layer to suppress the diffusion of ions/molecules within perovskite solar cells, an important degradation process in the device. Furthermore, this nanocarbon layer benefited the diffusion of electron charge carriers to enable a high-energy conversion efficiency. Finally, the efficiency on a perovskite solar cell with an aperture area of 1.02 cm2, after a thermal aging test at 85 °C for over 500 h, or light soaking for 1,000 h, was stable of over 15% during the entire test. The present diffusion engineering of ions/molecules and photo generated charges paves a way to realizing long-term stable and highly efficient perovskite solar cells.
