Project description:A cross-sectional census was conducted on all students at the campus of Inner Mongolia Medical University using a self-administered questionnaire. This study aimed to investigate their love from psychological pressure, behavioral characteristics, social cognition, etc. Our results show that all students cultivate feelings and become lifelong partners as their motivation for love. Among the population with various demographic characteristics, the prevalence of love among disadvantaged groups is low; that is, women are lower than men, and those from rural are lower than those from cities. After balancing areas and gender, mental working families have a high prevalence of love. Instead, students whose parents' high expectations pressure their children to have a high love prevalence. This is due to China's specific historical perspective. Our results suggested that although China has been deeply integrated with the world and has more frequent ideological and cultural exchanges, college students still inherit China's traditional outlook on love.

Project description:Love forgiveness is categorized as forgiveness in a specific relationship, which is the tendency of individuals to forgive the objects of their interpersonal relationships. We investigated 831 undergraduate students in China with a love forgiveness questionnaire, a subjective well-being questionnaire and an interpersonal relationship comprehensive diagnostic, including demographic variables. Students of different genders and grades showed significant differences across the three questionnaires. There were significant correlations between love forgiveness, interpersonal relationships, and subjective well-being of Chinese college students. Interpersonal relationships played an intermediary role between love forgiveness and subjective well-being of Chinese college students. Specifically, whereas Chinese college students' love forgiveness could directly promote the improvement of subjective well-being, love forgiveness could also indirectly improve subjective well-being through interpersonal relationships. The mediating effect of interpersonal relationships between love forgiveness and subjective well-being accounted for 40.52% of the total effect. This provides a new way of thinking for psychological counselors to approach the intimate relationship problems of college students.

Project description:Sexual swear words are frequently used and considered vulgar and controversial in Chinese. The study of attitude is not only an important part of the study of swear words, but is also an important way for predicting their use. To date, few independent studies have been conducted on Chinese sexual swear words; those that have been conducted mostly focus on language ontology rather than language use. The studies have mainly used qualitative research methods, with a lack of empirical analysis and use of measurement tools. It is feasible and necessary to study college students as the object of sexual swear words because of the prevalence of "Zu'an culture" and the abuse of sexual swear words. Based on the current research status of Chinese swear words and the context of using swear words on campus, this paper combines the research of linguistic differences in swearing, psychological theories, and social science measurement theories and uses SPSS and Mplus statistical software to develop Chinese college students' attitudes toward Sexual Swear Words Scale. The participants consist of students from Zhejiang Normal University and other universities. A total of 262 college students participated in the preliminary test. Through item analysis and exploratory factor analysis, the formal scale was formed. A total of 608 college students were formally tested, and confirmatory factor analysis, reliability, and validity tests were carried out to produce the final scale. The scale contains three subscales: Cognition (17 items), Affection (17 items), and Behavior Tendency (15 items). The results show that each subscale model fits well, has good reliability and validity, and can be used as an important tool to measure attitudes of Chinese college students toward sexual swear words.

Project description:The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of environmental education on students' attitudes about the environment in Chinese higher education. The findings showed that students' environmental attitudes can be greatly enhanced by college-level ecology and environmental education. One of the most major factors influencing students' environmental attitudes in the context of college environmental education is subjective norms, and curriculum education also has a big impact on this. It is possible that Chinese college students today lack the self-efficacy necessary to safeguard the environment since perceived behavioral control has less of an impact on college students' environmental attitudes than subjective norms and curricular education. This highlights the need of promoting environmental practices and improving college students' self-perceive and capacity for environmental protection. The study also showed that factors including gender, location, educational level, and economic status of the family had no impact on college students' environmental attitudes. The results of this study can be used to examine the factors influencing the environmental views of Chinese college students and to teach educators how to raise college students' awareness of the environment through curricular modifications, classroom instruction, and perceived behavioral control.

Project description:BackgroundTo investigate the knowledge, attitudes and anxiety toward COVID-19 among Chinese college students studying in China and abroad.MethodA structured questionnaire, comprised of demographic characteristics, knowledge and attitudes toward COVID-19 and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), was used to collect data for 566 domestic students and 126 students studying abroad.ResultsDomestic students were better than students abroad in knowledge of epidemiology and manifestations. Domestic students showed a significant higher enthusiasm for voluntary services than students abroad, including medical science popularization, community services, traffic dispersion, logistics transportation and being volunteers for vaccine trials. The scores (Mean ± SD) of S-AI and T-AI among students abroad were 59.48 ± 8.63 and 54.10 ± 7.20, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of domestic students (39.46 ± 8.16 and 39.25 ± 7.72).ConclusionsOur study showed a better understanding of knowledge, more positive attitudes and less anxiety toward COVID-19 among domestic students, compared with students studying abroad. In light of this information, more attention and appropriate psychological and social intervention should be paid to college students with anxiety, especially those studying abroad.

Project description:BackgroundThis study aimed to categorize different subgroups of problematic smartphone use in Chinese college students. Differences in gender and psychosocial characteristics of the categorized groups were also examined.MethodsA total of 1123 participants completed the Mobile Phone Addiction Index Scale, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, the Perceived Social Support Scale, and the Perceived Stress Scale. Using latent profile analysis, we identified different subgroups of problematic smartphone use in college students. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was implemented to examine the relationship between latent classes and demographic and psychosocial covariates.ResultsThe four following latent classes were identified: a low-risk group, a moderate-risk with no evasiveness group, a moderate-risk with evasiveness group, and high-risk group that accounted for 11%, 24.1%, 35.5%, and 29.4% of the total sample, respectively. Further analysis revealed that female participants were more likely to be in the moderate-risk with evasiveness and high-risk groups, and individuals with depressed mood were more likely to be in the moderate-risk and high-risk groups.ConclusionsClassifying college students according to the features of problematic smartphone use is potentially useful for understanding risk factors and developing targeted prevention and intervention programs.

Project description:BackgroundHealth literacy is a multidimensional concept that is considered a primary public health concern. This concept is often neglected in research, and the evidence regarding health literacy in college students is limited. The aim of this study was two-fold: to determine the needs and limitations of health literacy among college students and to explore the relationships among the nine dimensions of health literacy and sociodemographic factors, including age, gender, nationality, year of study, field of study, smoking status, history of chronic diseases, use of on-campus gym, and the intention to exercise on-campus.MethodsThis study was conducted using a cross-sectional approach. A total of 520 college students participated in this study. The average age was 21.03 years (SD = 2.29), with 47.5% males and 52.5% females. Data were collected using a demographics questionnaire and the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ). In addition to descriptive statistics, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and follow-up analyses were performed to explore any statistically significant mean differences among levels of health literacy and sociodemographic factors.ResultsThe levels of health literacy on the nine HLQ scales were lower than the levels reported in the literature. Multivariate analysis showed a significant effect of age, gender, smoking status, year of study, and field of study on the level of health literacy. Follow-up analyses revealed that female students, students from the health-related faculties, and those who do not smoke have higher levels of health literacy compared to their counterparts. A detailed comparison between the levels of the HLQ scales was made based on students' demographic characteristics. The field of study had the most prominent effect on the level of college students' health literacy; mean differences were statistically significant (p < .001), and effect sizes were large (ranging from .66 to 1.35 for the nine scales of the HLQ).ConclusionCollege students' health literacy is influenced by demographic characteristics. Such variations could amplify some of the existing health disparities. The implications of the findings on health, health promotion, and interprofessional education are discussed.

Project description:Modernization in China is accompanied by some specific features: aging, individualization, the emergence of the nuclear family, and changing filial piety. While young Chinese people are still the main caregivers for older adults, understanding the attitudes of young Chinese people toward aging and living independently in the context of modernization is important because it relates to future elderly care problems in China. By using in-depth interviews and qualitative methods, 45 participants were enrolled in the study, 38 (84.44%) were women and 37 (82.22%) had no siblings. The ages ranged from 17 to 25 years (mean age = 19.28, SD = 1.74). Results revealed that participants held diverse attitudes about older adults, but the general attitudes were that older adults are lonely, financially disadvantaged, have poor social support, lack hobbies, and care about their children more than themselves. Chinese college students were affected both by traditional filial piety and individualism; however, of the two, they seemed put greater value on independence. Moreover, traditional filial piety is changing in a modern direction, affected by Western ideas of individualism: the status of the senior is diminishing, and living with one's parents is no longer regarded as a necessary component. Implications concerning age stereotypes, elderly care policies, and strategies are discussed.

Project description:Approximately 4 μg of DNA was isolated from blood of each of 16 subjects using the Qiagen DNEasy Blood and Tissue Kit. Of the 16 samples, 8 were from group 1 (CESD-H/TST-H; 5 female, 3 male) and 8 were from group 2 (CESD-H/TST-L; 5 female, 3 male). All DNA samples were confirmed to be of high purity (A260/280: 1.7-2.0). Pooled samples were prepared for each group by combining approximately 75 ng of DNA from each of the eight subjects. These two samples were submitted to the Yale Genomics Core for epigenome-wide methylation profiling using the Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip, which measures the level of methylation β (a value ranging from 0 to 1, where 0 represents a completely unmethylated site and 1 a completely methylated site) at each of the 485,577 CpG sites on the array. Illumina’s GenomeStudio software was used to calculate the degree of differential methylation by group for each CpG site on the array, and FDR-adjusted p-values (Q-values) were calculated for each site in order to adjust for multiple comparisons. Project description:Volunteer service activities of college students are crucial for universities to educate students on civic engagement. Education laws and scientific methods must be employed to enhance college students' willingness to volunteer and actively participate in volunteer service activities. Based on literature collection and collation, this study takes the theory of planned behaviour as the basic framework, includes the dimension of "cognition," designs the questionnaire, and discusses the relationship among the relevant factors that affect the volunteer service behaviour of college students. Cognition, defined as understanding volunteerism's personal and social benefits, positively predicted attitudes, norms, and control, but not directly behaviour. A sample survey of Chinese college students and a correlation analysis of effective questionnaires demonstrate that college students' volunteer service attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behaviour control positively impact volunteer service behaviour intention, which can predict volunteer service behaviour. College students' cognition of volunteer service significantly and positively impacts their attitude toward it, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control but does not directly impact their volunteer service behaviour. Thus, the following aspects must be improved: guiding attitude, creating atmosphere, improving mechanisms, innovating projects, strengthening cognition, and implementing practical education. The findings of this study can help colleges and universities to clarify the impact mechanism of college students' volunteer service cognition on their volunteer service behaviour. It contributes new evidence on optimising the student environment to engage youth in building community well.
