Project description:High-energy-density rechargeable Li-O2 batteries are one of few candidates that can meet the demands of electric drive vehicles and other high-energy applications because of the ultra-high theoretical specific energy. However, the practical realization of the high rechargeable capacity is usually limited by the conflicted requirements for porous cathodes in high porosity to store the solid reaction products Li2O2 and large accessible surface area for easy formation and decomposition of Li2O2. Here we designed a hierarchical and bicontinuous nanoporous structure by introducing secondary nanopores into the ligaments of coarsened nanoporous gold by two-step dealloying. The hierarchical and bicontinuous nanoporous gold cathode provides high porosity, large accessible surface area and sufficient mass transport path for high capacity and long cycling lifetime of Li-O2 batteries.

Project description:While the compressive strength-density scaling relationship of ultralight cellular graphene materials has been extensively investigated, high tensile strength and ductility have not been realized in the theoretically strongest carbon materials because of high flaw sensitivity under tension and weak van der Waals interplanar bonding between graphene sheets. In this study, we report that large-scale ultralight nanoporous graphene with three-dimensional bicontinuous nanoarchitecture shows orders of magnitude higher strength and elastic modulus than all reported ultralight carbon materials under both compression and tension. The high-strength nanoporous graphene also exhibits excellent tensile ductility and work hardening, which are comparable to well-designed metamaterials but until now had not been realized in ultralight cellular materials. The excellent mechanical properties of the nanoporous graphene benefit from seamless graphene sheets in the bicontinuous nanoporosity that effectively preserves the intrinsic strength of atomically thick graphene in the three-dimensional cellular nanoarchitecture.

Project description:In this research, we demonstrate a facile approach for the synthesis of a graphite-analogous layer-by-layer heterostructured CuO/ZnO/carbon paper using a graphene oxide paper as a sacrificial template. Cu2+ and Zn2+ were inserted into the interlayer of graphene oxide papers via physical absorption and electrostatic effects and then, the M n+-graphene oxide paper was annealed in air to generate 2D nanoporous CuO/ZnO nanosheets. Due to the graphene oxide template, the structure of the obtained CuO/ZnO nanosheets with an average size of ∼50 nm was duplicated from the graphene oxide paper, which displayed a layer-by-layer structure on the microscale. The papers composed of nanosheets had an average pore size of ∼10 nm. Moreover, the as-prepared CuO-ZnO papers displayed high hybridization on the nanoscale. More importantly, the thickness of the single-layer CuO/ZnO nanosheet was about 2 nm (3-4 layer atom thickness). The as-synthesized nano-hybrid material with a high specific surface area and conjunct bimodal pores could play key roles for providing a shorter diffusion path and rapid electrolyte transport, which could further facilitate electrochemical reactions by providing more active sites. As an electrode material, it displayed high performances as a non-enzymatic sensor for the detection of glucose with a low potential (0.3 V vs. SCE), high sensitivity (3.85 mA mM-1 cm-2), wide linear range (5 μM to 3.325 mM), and low detection limit of 0.5 μM.

Project description:The electrocatalysts utilized as the prospective electrodes in fuel cells and high efficient energy conversion devices require both the interconnected channels for efficient electrolyte transportation and the superior catalytic activity with long service life. In this work, nanoporous gold with the rigid skeletons in three dimensions is partially decorated by porous platinum shell containing nanoscale interstitials, aiming to create the heterogeneous gold-platinum interfaces and facilitate the electrolyte transportation as well. In comparison with no catalytic activity of bare nanoporous gold, the catalytic activity of hierarchical nanoporous gold-platinum towards electrochemical oxidation of methanol increases with the loading level of platinum shells, resulting in the highest electrochemical area of 70.4?m(2)·g(-1) after the normalization by the mass of platinum. Heterogeneous gold-platinum interfaces affect the tolerance of the absorbed intermediate species because of the oxidization by the oxygenated species absorbed on the gold surface and the enhanced ion transportation within the porous platinum shell.

Project description:Dealloyed nanoporous gold (NPG) dramatically enhances quantum dot (QD) fluorescence by amplifying near-field excitation and increasing the radiative decay rate. Originating from plasmonic coupling, the fluorescence enhancement is highly dependent upon the nanopore size of the NPG. In contrast to other nanoengineered metallic structures, NPG exhibits fluorescence enhancement of QDs over a large substrate surface.

Project description:We describe a regularized regression model for the selection of gene-environment (G×E) interactions. The model focuses on a single environmental exposure and induces a main-effect-before-interaction hierarchical structure. We propose an efficient fitting algorithm and screening rules that can discard large numbers of irrelevant predictors with high accuracy. We present simulation results showing that the model outperforms existing joint selection methods for (G×E) interactions in terms of selection performance, scalability and speed, and provide a real data application. Our implementation is available in the gesso R package.

Project description:We present an algorithm to identify individual neural spikes observed on high-density multi-electrode arrays (MEAs). Our method can distinguish large numbers of distinct neural units, even when spikes overlap, and accounts for intrinsic variability of spikes from each unit. As MEAs grow larger, it is important to find spike-identification methods that are scalable, that is, the computational cost of spike fitting should scale well with the number of units observed. Our algorithm accomplishes this goal, and is fast, because it exploits the spatial locality of each unit and the basic biophysics of extracellular signal propagation. Human interaction plays a key role in our method; but effort is minimized and streamlined via a graphical interface. We illustrate our method on data from guinea pig retinal ganglion cells and document its performance on simulated data consisting of spikes added to experimentally measured background noise. We present several tests demonstrating that the algorithm is highly accurate: it exhibits low error rates on fits to synthetic data, low refractory violation rates, good receptive field coverage, and consistency across users.

Project description:Perception, thoughts, and actions are encoded by the coordinated activity of large neuronal populations spread over large areas. However, existing electrophysiological devices are limited by their scalability in capturing this cortex-wide activity. Here, we developed an electrode connector based on an ultra-conformable thin-film electrode array that self-assembles onto silicon microelectrode arrays enabling multithousand channel counts at a millimeter scale. The interconnects are formed using microfabricated electrode pads suspended by thin support arms, termed Flex2Chip. Capillary-assisted assembly drives the pads to deform toward the chip surface, and van der Waals forces maintain this deformation, establishing Ohmic contact. Flex2Chip arrays successfully measured extracellular action potentials ex vivo and resolved micrometer scale seizure propagation trajectories in epileptic mice. We find that seizure dynamics in absence epilepsy in the Scn8a+/- model do not have constant propagation trajectories.

Project description:Nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) microcantilevers are fabricated and MIL-53 (Al) metal-organic framework (MOF) layers are directly synthesized on each cantilever surface by using the aluminum oxide as the metal ion source. Exposure of the MIL53-AAO cantilevers to various concentrations of CO2, N2, CO, and Ar induces changes in their deflections and resonance frequencies. The results of the resonance frequency measurements for the different adsorbed gas molecules are almost identical when the frequency changes are normalized by the molecular weights of the gases. In contrast, the deflection measurements show that only CO2 adsorption induces substantial bending of the MIL53-AAO cantilevers. This selective deflection of the cantilevers is attributed to the strong interactions between CO2 and the hydroxyl groups in MIL-53, which induce structural changes in the MIL-53 layers. Simultaneous measurements of the resonance frequency and the deflection are performed to show that the diffusion of CO2 into the nanoporous MIL-53 layers occurs very rapidly, whereas the binding of CO2 to hydroxyl groups occurs relatively slowly, which indicates that the adsorption of CO2 onto the MIL-53 layers and the desorption of CO2 from the MIL-53 layers are reaction limited.

Project description:The effective implantation of conductive and charge storage materials into flexible frames has been strongly demanded for the development of flexible supercapacitors. Here, we introduce metallic cellulose paper-based supercapacitor electrodes with excellent energy storage performance by minimizing the contact resistance between neighboring metal and/or metal oxide nanoparticles using an assembly approach, called ligand-mediated layer-by-layer assembly. This approach can convert the insulating paper to the highly porous metallic paper with large surface areas that can function as current collectors and nanoparticle reservoirs for supercapacitor electrodes. Moreover, we demonstrate that the alternating structure design of the metal and pseudocapacitive nanoparticles on the metallic papers can remarkably increase the areal capacitance and rate capability with a notable decrease in the internal resistance. The maximum power and energy density of the metallic paper-based supercapacitors are estimated to be 15.1?mW?cm-2 and 267.3??Wh?cm-2, respectively, substantially outperforming the performance of conventional paper or textile-type supercapacitors.With ligand-mediated layer-by-layer assembly between metal nanoparticles and small organic molecules, the authors prepare metallic paper electrodes for supercapacitors with high power and energy densities. This approach could be extended to various electrodes for portable/wearable electronics.
