Crystal structures of two ytterbium(III) complexes comprising alkynylamidinate ligands.

ABSTRACT: Two ytterbium(III) complexes comprising alkynylamidinate ligands, namely bis-(?⁵-cyclo-penta-dien-yl)(3-cyclo-propyl-N,N'-diiso-propyl-propynamidinato-?²N,N')ytterbium(III), [Yb(C₅H₅)₂(C₁₂H₁₉N₂)] or Cp₂Yb[( ⁱ Pr₂N)₂C-C?C-c-C₃H₅] (1) and tris-(3-phenyl-N,N'-di-cyclo-hexyl-propynamidinato-?²N,N')ytterbium(III), [Yb(C₂₁H₂₇N₂)₃] or Yb[(CyN)₂C-C?C-Ph]₃ (Cy = cyclo-hex-yl) (2) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Both complexes are monomers; for complex 2, the contribution to the scattering from highly disordered toluene solvent molecules in these voids was removed with the SQUEEZE routine [Spek (2015). Acta Cryst. C71, 9-18] in PLATON. The stated crystal data for Mr, ? etc. do not take these into account.

Project description:Structural characterization of the ionic complexes [FeCl2(C26H22P2)2][FeCl4]·0.59CH2Cl2 or [(dppen)2FeCl2][FeCl4]·0.59CH2Cl2 (dppen = cis-1,2-bis-(di-phenyl-phosphane)ethyl-ene, P2C26H22) and [FeCl2(C30H24P2)2][FeCl4]·CH2Cl2 or [(dpbz)2FeCl2][FeCl4]·CH2Cl2 (dpbz = 1,2-bis-(di-phenyl-phosphane)benzene, P2C30H24) demonstrates trans coordination of two bidentate phosphane ligands (bis-phosphanes) to a single iron(III) center, resulting in six-coordinate cationic complexes that are balanced in charge by tetra-chlorido-ferrate(III) monoanions. The trans bis-phosphane coordination is consistent will all previously reported mol-ecular structures of six coordinate iron(III) complex cations with a (PP)2X2 (X = halido) donor set. The complex with dppen crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group C2/c as a partial-occupancy [0.592 (4)] di-chloro-methane solvate, while the dpbz-ligated complex crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 as a full di-chloro-methane monosolvate. Furthermore, the crystal studied of [(dpbz)2FeCl2][FeCl4]·CH2Cl2 was an inversion twin, whose component mass ratio refined to 0.76 (3):0.24 (3). Beyond a few very weak C-H⋯Cl and C-H⋯π inter-actions, there are no significant supra-molecular features in either structure.

Electronic structures of bent lanthanide(III) complexes with two N-donor ligands.

Project description:Low coordinate metal complexes can exhibit superlative physicochemical properties, but this chemistry is challenging for the lanthanides (Ln) due to their tendency to maximize electrostatic contacts in predominantly ionic bonding regimes. Although a handful of Ln2+ complexes with only two monodentate ligands have been isolated, examples in the most common +3 oxidation state have remained elusive due to the greater electrostatic forces of Ln3+ ions. Here, we report bent Ln3+ complexes with two bis(silyl)amide ligands; in the solid state the Yb3+ analogue exhibits a crystal field similar to its three coordinate precursor rather than that expected for an axial system. This unanticipated finding is in opposition to the predicted electronic structure for two-coordinate systems, indicating that geometries can be more important than the Ln ion identity for dictating the magnetic ground states of low coordinate complexes; this is crucial transferable information for the construction of systems with enhanced magnetic properties.

Crystal structures of two dioxomolybdenum complexes stabilized by salan ligands featuring phenyl and cyclo-hexyl backbones.

Project description:Two cis-dioxomolybdenum complexes based on salan ligands with different backbones are reported. The first complex, dioxido{2,2'-[l,2-phenyl-enebis(imino-methyl-ene)]bis-(phenolato)}molybdenum(VI) di-methyl-formamide disolvate, [Mo(C20H18N2O2)O2]·2C3H7NO (PhLMoO2, 1b), features a phenyl backbone, while the second complex, (6,6'-{[(cyclo-hexane-1,2-di-yl)bis(aza-nedi-yl)]bis-(methyl-ene)}bis-(2,4-di-tert-butyl-phenolato))dioxidomolybdenum(VI) methanol disolvate, [Mo(C36H56N2O2)O2]·2CH3OH (CyLMoO2, 2b), is based on a cyclo-hexyl backbone. These complexes crystallized as solvated species, 1b·2DMF and 2b·2MeOH. The salan ligands PhLH2 (1a) and CyLH2 (2a) coordinate to the molybdenum center in these complexes 1b and 2b in a κ2 N,κ2 O fashion, forming a distorted octa-hedral geometry. The Mo-N and Mo-O distances are 2.3475 (16) and 1.9567 (16) Å, respectively, in 1b while the corresponding measurements are Mo-N = 2.3412 (12) Å, and Mo-O = 1.9428 (10) Å for 2b. A key geometrical feature is that the N-Mo-N angle of 72.40 (4)° in CyLMoO2 is slightly less than that of the PhLMoO2 angle of 75.18 (6)°, which is attributed to the flexibility of the cyclo-hexane ring between the nitro-gen as compared to the rigid phenyl ring in the PhLMoO2.

Crystal structures of two nickel compounds comprising neutral NiII hydrazone complexes and di-carb-oxy-lic acids.

Project description:Two isostructural NiII compounds, bis-{N-[1-(pyridin-2-yl-κN)eth-ylidene]pyridine-4-carbohydrazonato-κ2N',O}nickel(II)-2,5-di-chloro-terephthalic acid (1/1), [Ni(C13H11N4O)2](C8H4Cl2O4), and bis-{N-[1-(pyridin-2-yl-κN)eth-ylidene]pyridine-4-carbohydrazonato-κ2N',O}nickel(II)-2,5-di-bromo-terephthalic acid (1/1), [Ni(C13H11N4O)2](C8H4Br2O4), were synthesized and their crystal structures determined. The pair of N,N',O-tridentate N-[1-(pyridin-2-yl-κN)eth-yl]pyridine-4-carbohydrazonate L ligands result in a cis-NiO2N4 octa-hedral coordination sphere for the metal ions. The asymmetric units consist of two half-mol-ecules of the di-carb-oxy-lic acids, which are completed by crystallographic inversion symmetry. In the respective crystals, the 2,5-di-chloro-terephthalic acid (H2Cl2TPA, 1-Cl) mol-ecules form zigzag hydrogen-bonded chains with the [Ni(L)2] mol-ecules, with the hydrogen-bond distances in 1-Br slightly longer than those in 1-Cl. The packing is consolidated by aromatic π-π stacking between the di-carb-oxy-lic acid mol-ecules and terminal pyridine rings in [Ni(L)2] and short halogen-halogen inter-actions are also observed. The qualitative prediction of the H-atom position from the C-N-C angles of the terminal pyridine rings in L and the C-O distances in the carboxyl groups show that 1-Cl and 1-Br are co-crystals rather than salts.

Project description:The crystal structure of the title compound, [YbCl2(H2O)6]Cl, was determined at 110 K. Samples were obtained from evaporated aceto-nitrile solutions containing the title compound, which consists of a [YbCl2(H2O)6](+) cation and a Cl(-) anion. The cations in the title compound sit on a twofold axis and form O-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds with the nearby Cl(-) anion. The coordination geometry around the metal centre forms a distorted square anti-prism. The ytterbium complex is isotypic with the europium complex [Tambrornino et al. (2014 ▶). Acta Cryst. Crystal structures of two SmIII complexes with dipicolinate [DPA]2- ligands: comparison of luminescent properties of products obtained at different pH values.

Project description:The formation of the two title compounds, Na3[Sm(DPA)3]·14H2O tris-odium tris-(pyridine-2,6-di-carboxyl-ato-κ3 O 2,N,O 6)samarate(III) tetra-deca-hydrate, Na3[Sm(C7H3NO4)3]·14H2O, and catena-poly[[[di-aqua-(6-carb-oxy-pyridine-2-carb-oxyl-ato-κ3 O 2,N,O 6)samarium(III)]-μ-pyridine-2,6-di-carboxyl-ato-κ4 O 2,N,O 6:O 2] tetra-hydrate], {[Sm(C7H3NO4)(C7H4NO4)(H2O)2]·4H2O}n, depends on the pH value adjusted with NaOH solution. In both crystal structures, the coordination spheres of the SmIII cations were found to be best described by a tricapped trigonal prism (TTP), with a more regular O6N3 donor set for Na3[Sm(DPA)3]·14H2O than that of O7N2 for [Sm(DPA)(HDPA)(H2O)2]·4H2O. The supra-molecular features of both crystal structures are dominated by O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds between water mol-ecules and the O atoms of the dipicolinato ligands. Samples were made from solutions at pH = 2, pH = 5, pH = 7, and pH = 10, and the crystals present in each sample were ground to a powder. The powder samples were analyzed with powder X-ray diffraction and luminescence spectroscopy. The splitting of the bands in the luminescence spectra recorded on powders at 77 K was observed to vary with the pH.

Highly near-IR emissive ytterbium(iii) complexes with unprecedented quantum yields.

Project description:The design of highly near-infrared (NIR) emissive lanthanide (Ln) complexes is challenging, owing to the lack of molecular systems with a high sensitization efficiency and the difficulty of achieving a large intrinsic quantum yield. Previous studies have reported success in optimizing individual factors and achieving high overall quantum yields, with the best yield being 12% for Yb(iii). Herein we report a series of highly NIR emissive Yb complexes, in which the Yb is sandwiched between an octafluorinated porphyrinate antenna ligand and a deuterated Kläui ligand, which allowed optimization of two factors in the same system, and one of the complexes had an unprecedented quantum yield of 63% (estimated uncertainty 15%) in CD2Cl2 with a long lifetime (?obs) of 714 ?s. Systematic analysis of the structure-photophysical properties relationship suggested that porphyrinates are effective antenna ligands with a sensitization efficiency up to ca. 100% and that replacement of the high-energy C-H oscillators in porphyrinate and Kläui ligands significantly improves the intrinsic quantum yield up to 75% (?obs/?rad), both of which contribute to enhancing the NIR emission intensity of Yb(iii) up to 25-fold. Besides the high luminescence efficiency, these Yb complexes have other attractive features such as excitation in the visible range and large extinction coefficients which make these Yb(iii) complexes outstanding optical materials in the NIR region.

Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes Incorporating Aromatic Phosphonate Ligands: Syntheses, Structures, and Tunable Optical Properties.

Project description:The incorporation of phosphonate ligands into the cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes can not only tune their electronic and optical properties but also provide the possibility of anchoring these molecules on the semiconductor surfaces for further applications. Herein, we report the first examples of mononuclear cyclometallated iridium(III) complexes incorporating phosphonate ligands, namely, [Ir(ppy)2(HL1)]·0.5H2O (1), [Ir(ppy)2(HL2)]·0.5H2O (2), [Ir(dfppy)2(HL1)] (3), and [Ir(dfppy)2(HL2)]·3.5H2O (4) (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, dfppy = 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine, H2L1 = 2-pyridylphosphonic acid, H2L2 = 2-quinolinephosphonic acid). Luminescent spectra are studied both in solution and in the solid state, and significantly red-shifted broad emission bands are observed in complexes 2 and 4. The experimental and density functional theory (DFT) time-dependent-DFT calculation results indicate that the expansion of the aromatic conjugation length in the ancillary phosphonate ligands decreases the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels of the systems, originating from the triplet state associated with the ancillary ligand such as 3MLCT, 3LC, and 3LLCT charge-transfer transitions.

Synthesis and Crystal Structures of New Strontium Complexes with Aminoalkoxy and β-Diketonato Ligands.

Project description:New heteroleptic strontium complexes were synthesized using substitution reaction of bis(trimethylsilyl)amide of Sr(btsa)2·2DME with aminoalkoxide and β-diketonate ligands. The complexes [Sr(bdmp)(btsa)]2·2THF (1), [Sr(bdeamp)(btsa)]2 (2), [Sr(dadamb)(btsa)]2 (3), [Sr(bdmp)(hfac)]3 (4), [Sr(bdeamp)(hfac)]3 (5), [Sr(dadamb)(hfac)]3 (6), and [Sr3(dadamb)4(tmhd)2] (7) were prepared and characterized by means of various analysis techniques such as Fourier transform infrared, NMR, thermogravimetric analysis, and elemental analysis. Complexes 1-3 were further structurally confirmed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and they displayed dimeric structures in which strontium atoms were connected by alkoxide oxygen atoms of the μ2 type. Compound 1 has a trigonal prismatic structure, whereas 2 and 3 have a distorted square pyramidal structure. In complexes 5-7, trimeric structures were obtained with strontium atoms connected by μ3-O bonds of alkoxide oxygen atoms and μ2-O bonds of alkoxide and β-diketonate oxygen atoms. The crystal structures of 5, 6, and 7 showed distorted capped octahedral geometry, while 7 (middle Sr atom) displayed a distorted trigonal prism geometry. Complexes 5-7 displayed ∼70% mass loss in the temperature range from 25 to 315 °C.
