Knowledge, Attitudes, and Current Practices of Canadian Physiotherapists in Preventing and Managing Diabetes.

ABSTRACT: Purpose: To describe the knowledge, attitudes, and current practices of Canadian physiotherapists in preventing and managing diabetes. Methods: Members of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association were recruited by email to participate in a Web-based survey. The survey contained 40 items in four domains: demographics and education, attitudes and beliefs, current practices, and knowledge of diabetes. A descriptive analysis was completed for all the response variables from the survey. Results: A total of 401 physiotherapists from 10 provinces and 2 territories participated. Respondents were most confident in providing education about exercise and had decreasing confidence in providing education about managing secondary complications, weight management, blood sugar control, and nutrition, respectively. Only 32.4% of participants offered diabetes management counselling, citing lack of training. Knowledge was generally good, except for activity guidelines. Conclusions: A significant proportion of physiotherapists lack confidence in providing key aspects of care to patients with diabetes. Gaps in clinical practice and knowledge of activity guidelines were also observed. This study highlights the need to review entry-level physiotherapy training and to develop continuing educational opportunities in this area.

Project description:IntroductionWith growing concerns about climate change and the healthcare sector's carbon footprint, integrating sustainable practices into physiotherapy could not only reduce this impact but also enhance patient outcomes. This study explores the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of physiotherapists in Iceland regarding climate change and their role in promoting sustainability.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was distributed to active members of the Icelandic Physiotherapy Association. A total of 114 physiotherapists participated (17.1% response rate). The survey, consisting of 21 questions across four themes-knowledge, attitudes, behavior, and obstacles-captured insights on respondents' understanding of climate change, their environmental practices, and the challenges they encounter.ResultsThe results revealed a strong awareness of the relevance of climate change to health, though many respondents acknowledged limited knowledge on the topic. A majority expressed a sense of responsibility to mitigate climate change and reported taking actions such as reducing waste and promoting energy conservation. However, many identified a need for more guidance and training to integrate sustainable practices effectively. The primary obstacle was insufficient knowledge on implementing environmental strategies, with respondents indicating that education and resources would help overcome this barrier.DiscussionThis study highlights the potential for physiotherapists to contribute significantly to the healthcare sector's sustainability goals. The respondents' desire to enhance their environmental practices suggests an opportunity for professional associations and educational institutions to provide targeted training and support. By fostering greater environmental literacy, physiotherapists could not only contribute to reducing the healthcare sector's carbon footprint but also promote sustainable health behaviors in patients. Enhanced knowledge and support could help physiotherapists become key contributors to sustainability in healthcare.

Project description:BackgroundThe promotion of early mobilization following critical illness is tempered by national reports of patient and institutional barriers to this approach. We carried out a survey to assess current knowledge, perceptions and practices of Canadian physicians and physiotherapists with respect to acquired weakness and early mobilization in adults in the intensive care unit (ICU).MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional, self-administered postal survey among critical care physicians and physiotherapists in all 46 academic ICUs in Canada in 2011-2012. To identify all physicians and physiotherapists working in the ICUs, we contacted division heads and senior physiotherapists by telephone or email. We designed, tested and administered a questionnaire with the following domains: knowledge of ICU-acquired weakness and early mobilization; personal views of, perceived barriers to and adequacy of technical skills for early mobilization; assessments for initiation of early mobilization and permissible activity levels by patient physiologic characteristics, diagnoses and therapies; staffing issues; and sedation practices.ResultsThe overall response rate was 71.3% (311/436); it was 64.2% (194/302) among physicians and 87.3% (117/134) among physiotherapists. A total of 214 respondents (68.8%) underestimated the incidence of ICU-acquired weakness in the general medical-surgical ICU population, and 186 (59.8%) stated they had insufficient knowledge or skills to mobilize patients receiving mechanical ventilation. Excessive sedation, medical instability, limited staffing, safety concerns, insufficient guidelines and insufficient equipment were common perceived barriers to early mobilization.InterpretationPhysicians and physiotherapists in the ICU underestimated the incidence of ICU-acquired weakness and felt inadequately trained to mobilize patients receiving mechanical ventilation. We identified multiple modifiable barriers to early mobilization at the institutional, health care provider and patient levels that need to be addressed when designing mobilization programs for critically ill adults.

Project description:BackgroundThis study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices among medical workers toward outpatient diabetes information platform.MethodsThis web-based cross-sectional study was conducted between May 2023 and June 2023 at the First Hospital of Zhangjiakou, China. A self-designed questionnaire was developed to collect demographic information of medical workers, and assess their knowledge, attitudes and practices toward outpatient diabetes information platform.ResultsA total of 685 questionnaires were collected. Among the participants, 603 (88.03%) were female, 432 (63.07%) work in a tertiary hospital, 548 (80.00%) have a bachelor degree, 270 (39.42%) of them work in the department of internal medicine and 315 (45.99%) of them received previous training on outpatient diabetes information platform. The mean knowledge, attitudes and practices scores were 4.32 ± 1.27 (possible range: 0-6), 56.76 ± 5.72 (possible range: 14-70), and 32.22 ± 8.42 (possible range: 9-45), respectively. 350 (51.09%) of them have sufficient knowledge, 168 (24.53%) have positive attitudes and 395 (57.66%) have active practices. Pearson correlation analysis showed that knowledge was positively correlated with attitudes (r = 0.397, P < 0.001), and attitudes were positively correlated with practices (r = 0.306, P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that primary hospital (OR = 0.32, 95% CI: 0.14-0.71, P = 0.005), secondary hospital (OR = 0.48, 95% CI: 0.32-0.72, P < 0.001), doctor (OR = 2.44, 95% CI: 1.39-4.28, P = 0.002) were independently associated with sufficient knowledge. Knowledge (OR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.29-1.73, P < 0.001), community hospital staff (OR = 0.21, 95% CI: 0.05-0.88, P = 0.032) were independently associated with positive attitudes. Attitudes (OR = 1.13, 95% CI: 1.09-1.17, P < 0.001), junior college (OR = 1.72, 95% CI: 1.07-2.77, P = 0.026) were independently associated with active practices. The structural equation model demonstrated that knowledge had a direct effect on attitudes (path coefficient = 0.521, P < 0.001), and attitudes had a direct effect on practices (path coefficient = 0.542, P < 0.001). Moreover, the type of hospital had a direct effect on knowledge (path coefficient = 0.085, P < 0.001). Additionally, previous training on the outpatient diabetes platform had direct effects on attitudes (path coefficient = 0.191, P < 0.001) and practices (path coefficient = 0.184, P < 0.001).ConclusionThese findings revealed that medical workers have insufficient knowledge, positive attitudes and inactive practices toward the outpatient diabetes information platform. Comprehensive training programs are needed to improve medical staff's practices in this area.
