Use of AMSR-E microwave satellite data for land surface characteristics and snow cover variation.

ABSTRACT: This data article contains data related to the research article entitled "Global land cover classification based on microwave polarization and gradient ratio (MPGR)" [1] and "Microwave polarization and gradient ratio (MPGR) for global land surface phenology" [2]. This data article presents land surface characteristics and snow cover variation information from sensors like EOS Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E). This data article use the HDF Explorer, Matlab, and ArcGIS software to process the pixel latitude, longitude, snow water equivalent (SWE), digital elevation model (DEM) and Brightness Temperature (BT) information from AMSR-E satellite data to provide land surface characteristics and snow cover variation data in all-weather condition at any time. This data information is useful to discriminate different land surface cover types and snow cover variation, which is turn, will help to improve monitoring of weather, climate and natural disasters.

Project description:Hereby presented data consists of a land use / land cover map of an 84 km2 part of the Vavatenina district, in the Analanjirofo Region of the east coast of Madagascar, where the landscape is dominated by woody vegetation. This map was obtained by processing very high spatial resolution multispectral images acquired by the Pleiades satellite sensor in 2018. Pleiades data were produced by Airbus defence & Space (France), and distributed by the French National Space Agency (CNES, France). An object-based approach was chosen to exploit the advantages of such images, allowing the use of various texture indices derived from the image to discriminate between different surfaces sharing similar radiometric properties while being structurally different. The object-based image analysis consists of iterative segmentations of the image into homogeneous regions, called objects, which can afterwards be classified using radiometric and textural variables. The reference database, computed out of field knowledge and used to train the mapping methodology, is also described here. It includes 2105 georeferenced points labelled with one of the 9 following classes: Built up/road/bare areas, Annual crops/pasture/short vegetation, Clove dominated park, Clove monoculture, Diversified agroforest, Diversified park, Plantation of woody species, Shrubby fallow, Woody fallow. It is formatted as a geographical information system, accessible for any other purpose like further methodology development. These ground-truth data also helped to the definition of the 13 thematic land use / land cover types to be distinguished in the area. Multiple segmentation levels were thus necessary to gradually derive these classes, with different classification algorithms depending on the level. The final map provides an exhaustive description of the area with a good overall accuracy, reaching 80%. It is openly available as an ESRI shapefile to allow quantitative spatial analysis in key applications such as agriculture, environment, or food security.

Project description:The dynamic interplay between urbanization and its impacts on climate is a subject of recent concern, particularly in rapidly urbanizing cities of Pakistan. This research investigated the spatio-temporal effects of urban growth in terms of Land Use Land Cover changes on the thermal environment (Land Surface Temperature) of the Sialkot city, Pakistan using satellite data spanning four distinct time periods (1989, 2000, 2009 and 2020) and predicted changes for year 2030 by employing Cellular Automata Markov Chain Model. Satellite imagery (Landsat 5, 7 and 8) was processed, and maximum likelihood supervised classification was done to generate LULC maps for each of the aforementioned years. In addition to LULC classification, thermal bands of satellite data (for summer and winter) were processed to compute Land Surface Temperature (LST) of the city. The prediction of LULC changes and LST was done for year 2030 using Cellular Automata Markov Chain Model. The accuracy of classified and prediction maps was checked using Kappa Index. The LULC analysis revealed 4.14% increase in the built-up area and 3.43% decrease in vegetation cover of the city during 1989 to 2020. Both land covers are expected to change in the future (year 2030) by + 1.31% (built-up) and - 1.1% (vegetation). Furthermore, a declining trend in the barren land and water bodies was also observed over time. These LULC changes were found affecting the LST of study area. The transformation of vegetation cover into built-up area resulted in an increase in LST over time. A notable rise of 4.5 °C (summer) and 5.7 °C (winter) in the mean LST of Sialkot was observed during 1989 to 2020 and further increases are anticipated in year 2030. This study calls for attention of the policy makers to reduce human impact on the local climate of the city. The study will also help city developers in analyzing the urban population growth trend, finding suitable location to built new infrastructure by governmental authorities and how the rising temperature can affect energy demand and agriculture production of the city in future.
