Synthesis and crystal structure of a new alluaudite-like iron phosphate Na₂CaMnFe(PO₄)₃.

ABSTRACT: A new iron phosphate, disodium calcium manganese(II) iron(III) tris(phosphate), Na₂CaMnFe(PO₄)₃, has been synthesized as single crystals by the flux technique. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The structure belongs to the alluaudite structural type and thus, it obeys the X(2)X(1)M(1)M(2)₂(PO₄)₃ general formula. Both the X(2) and X(1) sites are fully occupied by sodium, while M(1) is occupied by calcium and M(2) exhibits a statistical distribution of iron and manganese.

Project description:Na2.22Mn0.87In1.68(PO4)3, sodium manganese indium tris-(phosphate) (2.22/0.87/1.68), was obtained in the form of single crystals by a flux method and was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound belongs to the alluaudite structure type (space group C2/c) with general formula X(2)X(1)M(1)M(2)2(PO4)3. The X(2) and X(1) sites are partially occupied by sodium [occupancy 0.7676 (17) and 1/2] while the M(1) and M(2) sites are fully occupied within a mixed distribution of sodium/manganese(II) and manganese(II)/indium, respectively. The three-dimensional anionic framework is built up on the basis of M(2)2O10 dimers that share opposite edges with M(1)O6 octa-hedra, thus forming infinite chains extending parallel to [10]. The linkage between these chains is ensured by PO4 tetra-hedra through common vertices. The three-dimensional network thus constructed delimits two types of hexa-gonal channels, resulting from the catenation of M(2)2O10 dimers, M(1)O6 octa-hedra and PO4 tetra-hedra through edge- and corner-sharing. The channels are occupied by Na+ cations with coordination numbers of seven and eight.

Project description:A new magnesium phosphate, Na3RbMg7(PO4)6 [tris-odium rubidium hepta-magnesium hexakis(ortho-phosphate)], has been synthesized as single crystals by the flux method and exhibits a new structure type. Its original structure is built up from MgO x (x = 5 and 6) polyhedra linked directly to each other through common corners or edges and reinforced by corner-sharing with PO4 tetra-hedra. The resulting anionic three-dimensional framework leads to the formation of channels along the [010] direction, in which the Na+ cations are located, while the Rb+ cations are located in large inter-stitial cavities.

Synthesis, crystal structure determination of a novel phosphate Ag1.64Zn1.64Fe1.36(PO4)3 with an alluaudite-like structure.

Project description:Single crystals of Ag1.64Zn1.64Fe1.36(PO4)3 [silver zinc iron phosphate (1.64/1.64/1.36/3)] have been synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compound crystallizes with an alluaudite-like structure. All atoms of the structure are in general positions except for four, which reside on special positions of the space group, C2/c. The Ag+ cations reside at full occupancy on inversion centre sites and at partial occupancy (64%) on a twofold rotation axis. In this structure, the unique Fe3+ ion with one of the two Zn2+ cations are substitutionally disordered on the same general position (Wyckoff site 8f), with a respective ratio of 0.68/0.32 (occupancies were fixed so as to ensure electrical neutrality for the whole structure). The remaining O and P atoms are located in general positions. The three-dimensional framework of this structure consists of kinked chains of edge-sharing octa-hedra stacked parallel to [10]. These chains are built up by a succession of [MO6] (M = Zn/Fe or Zn) units. Adjacent chains are connected by the PO4 anions, forming sheets oriented perpendicular to [010]. These inter-connected sheets generate two types of channels parallel to the c axis, in which the Ag+ cations are located. The validity and adequacy of the proposed structural model of Ag1.64Zn1.64Fe1.36(PO4)3 was established by means of bond-valence-sum (BVS) and charge-distribution (CHARDI) analysis tools.

Crystal structure of a silver-, cobalt- and iron-based phosphate with an alluaudite-like structure: Ag1.655Co1.64Fe1.36(PO4)3.

Project description:The new silver-, cobalt- and iron-based phosphate, silver cobalt iron tris(ortho-phosphate), Ag1.655Co1.64Fe1.36(PO4)3, was synthesized by solid-state reactions. Its structure is isotypic to that of Na2Co2Fe(PO4)3, and belongs to the alluaudite family, with a partial cationic disorder, the AgI atoms being located on an inversion centre and twofold rotation axis sites (Wyckoff positions 4a and 4e), with partial occupancies of 0.885 (2) and 0.7688 (19), respectively. One of the two P atoms in the asymmetric unit completely fills one 4e site while the Co and Fe atoms fill another 4e site, with partial occupancies of 0.86 (5) and 0.14 (5), respectively. The remaining Co2+ and Fe3+ cations are distributed on a general position, 8f, in a 0.39 (4):0.61 (4) ratio. All O atoms and the other P atoms are in general positions. The structure is built up from zigzag chains of edge-sharing [MO6] (M = Fe/Co) octa-hedra stacked parallel to [101]. These chains are linked together through PO4 tetra-hedra, forming polyhedral sheets perpendicular to [010]. The resulting framework displays two types of channels running along [001], in which the AgI atoms (coordination number eight) are located.

Crystal structure of SrCo4(OH)(PO4)3, a new hy-droxy-phosphate.

Project description:Single crystals of strontium tetra-cobalt tris-(orthophosphate) hydroxide, SrCo4(OH)(PO4)3, were grown serendipitously under hydro-thermal conditions at 473 K. The crystal structure consists of undulating chains of edge-sharing [CoO6] octa-hedra that are linked into (010) layers by common vertices between chains. Adjacent layers are linked along [010] into a framework structure by tetra-hedral [CoO4] units and by PO4 tetra-hedra. The framework delimits channels extending along [100] in which the eleven-coordinate strontium cations are situated. Bifurcated O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds of weak strengths consolidate the crystal packing. The title compound was also characterized by infrared spectroscopy.

Synthesis and crystal structure of NaCuIn(PO4)2.

Project description:Single crystals of sodium copper(II) indium bis-[phosphate(V)], NaCuIn(PO4)2, were grown from the melt under atmospheric conditions. The title phosphate crystallizes in the space group P21/n and is isotypic with KCuFe(PO4)2. In the crystal, two [CuO5] trigonal bipyramids share an edge to form a dimer [Cu2O8] that is connected to two PO4 tetra-hedra. The obtained [Cu2P2O12] units are inter-connected through vertices to form sheets that are sandwiched between undulating layers resulting from the junction of PO4 tetra-hedra and [InO6] octa-hedra. The two types of layers are alternately stacked along [101] and are joined into a three-dimensional framework through vertex- and edge-sharing, leaving channels parallel to the stacking direction. The channels host the sodium cations that are surrounded by four oxygen atoms in form of a distorted disphenoid.

Crystal structure of a sodium, zinc and iron(III)-based non-stoichiometric phosphate with an alluaudite-like structure: Na1.67Zn1.67Fe1.33(PO4)3.

Project description:The new title compound, disodium dizinc iron(III) tris-(phosphate), Na1.67Zn1.67Fe1.33(PO4)3, which belongs to the alluaudite family, has been synthesized by solid-state reactions. In this structure, all atoms are in general positions except for four, which are located on special positions of the C2/c space group. This structure is characterized by cation substitutional disorder at two sites, one situated on the special position 4e (2) and the other on the general position 8f. The 4e site is partially occupied by Na(+) [0.332 (3)], whereas the 8f site is entirely filled by a mixture of Fe and Zn. The full-occupancy sodium and zinc atoms are located at the Wyckoff positions on the inversion center 4a (-1) and on the twofold rotation axis 4e, respectively. Refinement of the occupancy ratios, bond-valence analysis and the electrical neutrality requirement of the structure lead to the given composition for the title compound. The three-dimensional framework of this structure consists of kinked chains of edge-sharing octa-hedra stacked parallel to [10-1]. The chains are formed by a succession of trimers based on [ZnO6] octa-hedra and the mixed-cation Fe(III)/Zn(II) [(Fe/Zn)O6] octa-hedra [Fe(III):Zn(III) ratio 0.668 (3)/0.332 (3)]. Continuous chains are held together by PO4 phosphate groups, forming polyhedral sheets perpendicular to [010]. The stacked sheets delimit two types of tunnels parallel to the c axis in which the sodium cations are located. Each Na(+) cation is coordinated by eight O atoms. The disorder of Na in the tunnel might presage ionic mobility for this material.

Project description:The title compound, AgMg(3)(PO(4))(HPO(4))(2), which has been synthesized by the hydro-thermal method, has an alluaudite-like structure which is formed by edge-sharing MgO(6) octa-hedra (one of which has symmetry 2), resulting in chains linked together by phosphate groups and hydrogen bonds. The three-dimensional framework leads to two different channels along the c axis, one of which is occupied by Ag(+) ions with a square-planar coordination. The Ag(+) ions are disordered over two sites in a 0.89?(3):0.11?(3) ratio. The OH groups, which point into the other type of channel, are involved in strong O-H?O hydrogen bonds. The title compound is isotypic with the compounds AM(3)H(2)(XO(4))(HXO(4))(2) (A = Na or Ag, M = Mn, Co or Ni, and X = P or As) of the alluaudite structure type.

Na(4)FeFe(PO(4))(3), a new synthetic NASICON-type phosphate.

Project description:This paper reports the crystal structure of tetra-sodium diiron tris(phosphate), Na(4)Fe(2+)Fe(3+)(PO(4))(3), which has been synthesized hydro-thermally at 773 K and 0.1 GPa. The crystal structure has been refined in the space group Rc and is identical to that of γ-NASICON. The heteropolyhedral framework is based on a regular alternation, in three dimensions, of corner-sharing PO(4) tetra-hedra and FeO(6) octa-hedra, constituting so-called 'lantern units' stacked along the c axis. The Na(+) cations are distributed over two crystallographic sites: the six-coordinated Na1 site which lies between two 'lantern units', and the eight-coordinated Na2 site which lies at the same z value as the P site.

Crystal structure of calcium dinickel(II) iron(III) tris-(orthophosphate): CaNi2Fe(PO4)3.

Project description:The title compound, CaNi2Fe(PO4)3, was synthesized by solid-state reactions. Its structure is closely related to that of α-CrPO4 in the space group Imma. Except for two O atoms in general positions, all atoms are located in special positions. The three-dimensional framework is built up from two types of sheets extending parallel to (100). The first sheet is made up from two edge-sharing [NiO6] octa-hedra, leading to the formation of [Ni2O10] double octa-hedra that are connected to two PO4 tetra-hedra through a common edge and corners. The second sheet results from rows of corner-sharing [FeO6] octa-hedra and PO4 tetra-hedra forming an infinite linear chain. These layers are linked together through common corners of PO4 tetra-hedra and [FeO6] octa-hedra, resulting in an open three-dimensional framework that delimits two types of channels parallel to [100] and [010] in which the eightfold-coordinated CaII cations are located.
