N-Methylformamide as a Source of Methylammonium Ions in the Synthesis of Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals and Bulk Crystals.

ABSTRACT: We report chemical routes for the synthesis of both nanocrystals and bulk crystals of methylammonium (MA) lead halide perovskites employing N-methylformamide (NMF) as a source of MA ions. Colloidal nanocrystals were prepared by a transamidation reaction between NMF and an alkyl amine (oleylamine). The nanocrystals showed photoluminescence quantum yields reaching 74% for MAPbBr₃ and 60% for MAPbI₃. Bulk crystals were grown at room temperature, with no need for an antisolvent, by the acid hydrolysis of NMF. Important advantages of using NMF instead of MA salts are that the syntheses involve fewer steps and less toxic and less expensive chemicals.

Inversion symmetry and bulk Rashba effect in methylammonium lead iodide perovskite single crystals.

Project description:Methylammonium lead iodide perovskite (MAPbI3) exhibits long charge carrier lifetimes that are linked to its high efficiency in solar cells. Yet, the mechanisms governing these unusual carrier dynamics are not completely understood. A leading hypothesis-disproved in this work-is that a large, static bulk Rashba effect slows down carrier recombination. Here, using second harmonic generation rotational anisotropy measurements on MAPbI3 crystals, we demonstrate that the bulk structure of tetragonal MAPbI3 is centrosymmetric with I4/mcm space group. Our calculations show that a significant Rashba splitting in the bandstructure requires a non-centrosymmetric lead iodide framework, and that incorrect structural relaxations are responsible for the previously predicted large Rashba effect. The small Rashba splitting allows us to compute effective masses in excellent agreement with experiment. Our findings rule out the presence of a large static Rashba effect in bulk MAPbI3, and our measurements find no evidence of dynamic Rashba effects.

Giant Zero-Drift Electronic Behaviors in Methylammonium Lead Halide Perovskite Diodes by Doping Iodine Ions.

Project description:Methylammonium lead halide perovskites have attracted extensive attention for optoelectronic applications. Carrier transport in perovskites is obscured by vacancy-mediated ion migration, resulting in anomalous electronic behavior and deteriorated reliability of the devices. In this communication, we demonstrate that ion migration can be significantly enhanced by doping additional mobile I? ions into the perovskite bulk. Ionic confinement structures of vertical metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) and lateral metal semiconductor metal (MSM) diodes designed to decouple ion-migration/accumulation and electronic transport are fabricated and characterized. Measurement conditions (electric-field history, scan rate and sweep frequency) are shown to affect the electronic transport in perovskite films, through a mechanism involving ion migration and accumulation at the block interfaces. Prominent zero-point drifts of dark current-voltage curves in both vertical and lateral diode are presented, and further varied with the perovskite film containingthe different iodine-lead atomic ratio. The doped perovskite has a large ion current at grain boundaries, offering a large ion hysteresis loopand zero drift value. The results confirmthat the intrinsic behavior of perovskite film is responsible for the hysteresisof the optoelectronic devices, but also paves the way for potential applications in many types of devices including memristors and solid electrolyte batteries by doping the native species (I- ions) in perovskite film.

X-ray Scintillation in Lead Halide Perovskite Crystals.

Project description:Current technologies for X-ray detection rely on scintillation from expensive inorganic crystals grown at high-temperature, which so far has hindered the development of large-area scintillator arrays. Thanks to the presence of heavy atoms, solution-grown hybrid lead halide perovskite single crystals exhibit short X-ray absorption length and excellent detection efficiency. Here we compare X-ray scintillator characteristics of three-dimensional (3D) MAPbI3 and MAPbBr3 and two-dimensional (2D) (EDBE)PbCl4 hybrid perovskite crystals. X-ray excited thermoluminescence measurements indicate the absence of deep traps and a very small density of shallow trap states, which lessens after-glow effects. All perovskite single crystals exhibit high X-ray excited luminescence yields of >120,000 photons/MeV at low temperature. Although thermal quenching is significant at room temperature, the large exciton binding energy of 2D (EDBE)PbCl4 significantly reduces thermal effects compared to 3D perovskites, and moderate light yield of 9,000 photons/MeV can be achieved even at room temperature. This highlights the potential of 2D metal halide perovskites for large-area and low-cost scintillator devices for medical, security and scientific applications.

Pressure-induced emission of cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals.

Project description:Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are of great interest for optoelectronics because of their high quantum efficiency in solar cells and light-emitting devices. However, exploring an effective strategy to further improve their optical activities remains a considerable challenge. Here, we report that nanocrystals (NCs) of the initially nonfluorescent zero-dimensional (0D) cesium lead halide perovskite Cs4PbBr6 exhibit a distinct emission under a high pressure of 3.01 GPa. Subsequently, the emission intensity of Cs4PbBr6 NCs experiences a significant increase upon further compression. Joint experimental and theoretical analyses indicate that such pressure-induced emission (PIE) may be ascribed to the enhanced optical activity and the increased binding energy of self-trapped excitons upon compression. This phenomenon is a result of the large distortion of [PbBr6]4- octahedral motifs resulting from a structural phase transition. Our findings demonstrate that high pressure can be a robust tool to boost the photoluminescence efficiency and provide insights into the relationship between the structure and optical properties of 0D MHPs under extreme conditions.

The Phosphine Oxide Route toward Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals.

Project description:We report an amine-free synthesis of lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals, using trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) instead of aliphatic amines, in combination with a protic acid (e.g., oleic acid). The overall synthesis scheme bears many similarities to the chemistry behind the preparation of LHP thin films and single crystals, in terms of ligand coordination to the chemical precursors. The acidity of the environment and hence the extent of protonation of the TOPO molecules tune the reactivity of the PbX2 precursor, regulating the size of the nanocrystals. On the other hand, TOPO molecules are virtually absent from the surface of our nanocrystals, which are simply passivated by one type of ligand (e.g., Cs-oleate). Furthermore, our studies reveal that Cs-oleate is dynamically bound to the surface of the nanocrystals and that an optimal surface coverage is critical for achieving high photoluminescence quantum yield. Our scheme delivers NCs with a controlled size and shape: only cubes are formed, with no contamination with platelets, regardless of the reaction conditions that were tested. We attribute such a shape homogeneity to the absence of primary aliphatic amines in our reaction environment, since these are known to promote the formation of nanocrystals with sheet/platelet morphologies or layered phases under certain reaction conditions. The TOPO route is particularly appealing with regard to synthesizing LHP nanocrystals for large-scale manufacturing, as the yield in terms of material produced is close to the theoretical limit: i.e., almost all precursors employed in the synthesis are converted into nanocrystals.

Microcarrier-Assisted Inorganic Shelling of Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals.

Project description:The conventional strategy of synthetic colloidal chemistry for bright and stable quantum dots has been the production of epitaxially matched core/shell heterostructures to mitigate the presence of deep trap states. This mindset has been shown to be incompatible with lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP NCs) due to their dynamic surface and low melting point. Nevertheless, enhancements to their chemical stability are still in great demand for the deployment of LHP NCs in light-emitting devices. Rather than contend with their attributes, we propose a method in which we can utilize their dynamic, ionic lattice and uniquely defect-tolerant band structure to prepare non-epitaxial salt-shelled heterostructures that are able to stabilize these materials against their environment, while maintaining their excellent optical properties and increasing scattering to improve out-coupling efficiency. To do so, anchored LHP NCs are first synthesized through the heterogeneous nucleation of LHPs onto the surface of microcrystalline carriers, such as alkali halides. This first step stabilizes the LHP NCs against further merging, and this allows them to be coated with an additional inorganic shell through the surface-mediated reaction of amphiphilic Na and Br precursors in apolar media. These inorganically shelled NC@carrier composites offer significantly improved chemical stability toward polar organic solvents, such as ?-butyrolactone, acetonitrile, N-methylpyrrolidone, and trimethylamine, demonstrate high thermal stability with photoluminescence intensity reversibly dropping by no more than 40% at temperatures up to 120 °C, and improve compatibility with various UV-curable resins. This mindset for LHP NCs creates opportunities for their successful integration into next-generation light-emitting devices.

Strong Carrier-Phonon Coupling in Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals.

Project description:We highlight the importance of carrier-phonon coupling in inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals. The low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of CsPbBr3 has been investigated under a nonresonant and a nonstandard, quasi-resonant excitation scheme, and phonon replicas of the main PL band have been identified as due to the Fröhlich interaction. The energy of longitudinal optical (LO) phonons has been determined from the separation of the zero phonon band and phonon replicas. We reason that the observed LO phonon coupling can only be related to an orthorhombically distorted crystal structure of the perovskite nanocrystals. Additionally, the strength of carrier-phonon coupling has been characterized using the ratio between the intensities of the first phonon replica and the zero-phonon band. PL emission from localized versus delocalized carriers has been identified as the source of the observed discrepancies between the LO phonon energy and phonon coupling strength under quasi-resonant and nonresonant excitation conditions, respectively.

Size-dependent phase transition in methylammonium lead iodide perovskite microplate crystals.

Project description:Methylammonium lead iodide perovskite has attracted considerable recent interest for solution processable solar cells and other optoelectronic applications. The orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition in perovskite can significantly alter its optical, electrical properties and impact the corresponding applications. Here, we report a systematic investigation of the size-dependent orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition using a combined temperature-dependent optical, electrical transport and transmission electron microscopy study. Our studies of individual perovskite microplates with variable thicknesses demonstrate that the phase transition temperature decreases with reducing microplate thickness. The sudden decrease of mobility around phase transition temperature and the presence of hysteresis loops in the temperature-dependent mobility confirm that the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition is a first-order phase transition. Our findings offer significant fundamental insight on the temperature- and size-dependent structural, optical and charge transport properties of perovskite materials, and can greatly impact future exploration of novel electronic and optoelectronic devices from these materials.

Ytterbium-Doped Lead-Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals: Synthesis, Near-Infrared Emission, and Open-Source Machine Learning Model for Prediction of Optical Properties.

Project description:Lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals are an attractive class of materials since they can be easily fabricated, their optical properties can be tuned all over the visible spectral range, and they possess high emission quantum yields and narrow photoluminescence linewidths. Doping perovskites with lanthanides is one of the ways to widen the spectral range of their emission, making them attractive for further applications. Herein, we summarize the recent progress in the synthesis of ytterbium-doped perovskite nanocrystals in terms of the varying synthesis parameters such as temperature, ligand molar ratio, ytterbium precursor type, and dopant content. We further consider the dependence of morphology (size and ytterbium content) and optical parameters (photoluminescence quantum yield in visible and near-infrared spectral ranges) on the synthesis parameters. The developed open-source code approximates those dependencies as multiple-parameter linear regression and allows us to estimate the value of the photoluminescence quantum yield from the parameters of the perovskite synthesis. Further use and promotion of an open-source database will expand the possibilities of the developed code to predict the synthesis protocols for doped perovskite nanocrystals.

Quantifying Photoinduced Polaronic Distortions in Inorganic Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals.

Project description:The development of next-generation perovskite-based optoelectronic devices relies critically on the understanding of the interaction between charge carriers and the polar lattice in out-of-equilibrium conditions. While it has become increasingly evident for CsPbBr3 perovskites that the Pb-Br framework flexibility plays a key role in their light-activated functionality, the corresponding local structural rearrangement has not yet been unambiguously identified. In this work, we demonstrate that the photoinduced lattice changes in the system are due to a specific polaronic distortion, associated with the activation of a longitudinal optical phonon mode at 18 meV by electron-phonon coupling, and we quantify the associated structural changes with atomic-level precision. Key to this achievement is the combination of time-resolved and temperature-dependent studies at Br K and Pb L3 X-ray absorption edges with refined ab initio simulations, which fully account for the screened core-hole final state effects on the X-ray absorption spectra. From the temporal kinetics, we show that carrier recombination reversibly unlocks the structural deformation at both Br and Pb sites. The comparison with the temperature-dependent XAS results rules out thermal effects as the primary source of distortion of the Pb-Br bonding motif during photoexcitation. Our work provides a comprehensive description of the CsPbBr3 perovskites' photophysics, offering novel insights on the light-induced response of the system and its exceptional optoelectronic properties.
