EU-Forest, a high-resolution tree occurrence dataset for Europe.

ABSTRACT: We present EU-Forest, a dataset that integrates and extends by almost one order of magnitude the publicly available information on European tree species distribution. The core of our dataset (~96% of the occurrence records) came from an unpublished, large database harmonising forest plot surveys from National Forest Inventories on an INSPIRE-compliant 1?km×1?km grid. These new data can potentially benefit several disciplines, including forestry, biodiversity conservation, palaeoecology, plant ecology, the bioeconomy, and pest management.

A high-resolution daily gridded meteorological dataset for Serbia made by Random Forest Spatial Interpolation.

Project description:We produced the first daily gridded meteorological dataset at a 1-km spatial resolution across Serbia for 2000-2019, named MeteoSerbia1km. The dataset consists of five daily variables: maximum, minimum and mean temperature, mean sea-level pressure, and total precipitation. In addition to daily summaries, we produced monthly and annual summaries, and daily, monthly, and annual long-term means. Daily gridded data were interpolated using the Random Forest Spatial Interpolation methodology, based on using the nearest observations and distances to them as spatial covariates, together with environmental covariates to make a random forest model. The accuracy of the MeteoSerbia1km daily dataset was assessed using nested 5-fold leave-location-out cross-validation. All temperature variables and sea-level pressure showed high accuracy, although accuracy was lower for total precipitation, due to the discontinuity in its spatial distribution. MeteoSerbia1km was also compared with the E-OBS dataset with a coarser resolution: both datasets showed similar coarse-scale patterns for all daily meteorological variables, except for total precipitation. As a result of its high resolution, MeteoSerbia1km is suitable for further environmental analyses.

HARCI-EU, a harmonized gridded dataset of critical infrastructures in Europe for large-scale risk assessments.

Project description:Critical infrastructures (CIs) are assets, systems, or parts thereof that are essential for the maintenance of socioeconomic functions, health, safety and well-being of people. The exposure of CIs to natural and man-made hazards poses a risk to the economy and society. The spatial distribution of CIs and their economic value are a prerequisite for quantifying risk and planning suitable protection and adaptation measures. However, the incompleteness and inconsistency of existing information on CIs hamper their integration into large-scale risk frameworks. We present here the 'HARmonized grids of Critical Infrastructures in EUrope' (HARCI-EU) dataset. It represents major CIs in the transport, energy, industry and social sectors at 1?km2 expressed in sector-specific, economically-relevant units. The HARCI-EU grids were produced by integrating geospatial and statistical data from multiple sources. Correlation analysis performed against independent metrics corroborates the approach showing average Pearson coefficients ranging between 0.61 and 0.95 across the sectors. HARCI-EU provides a consistent mapping of CIs in key sectors that can serve as exposure information for large-scale risk assessments in Europe.

High molecular diversity in the true service tree (Sorbus domestica) despite rareness: data from Europe with special reference to the Austrian occurrence.

Project description:Background and aimsSorbus domestica (Rosaceae) is one of the rarest deciduous tree species in Europe and is characterized by a scattered distribution. To date, no large-scale geographic studies on population genetics have been carried out. Therefore, the aims of this study were to infer levels of molecular diversity across the major part of the European distribution of S. domestica and to determine its population differentiation and structure. In addition, spatial genetic structure was examined together with the patterns of historic and recent gene flow between two adjacent populations.MethodsLeaf or cambium samples were collected from 17 populations covering major parts of the European native range from north-west France to south-east Bulgaria. Seven nuclear microsatellites and one chloroplast minisatellite were examined and analysed using a variety of methods.Key resultsAllelic richness was unexpectedly high for both markers within populations (mean per locus: 3·868 for nSSR and 1·647 for chloroplast minisatellite). Moreover, there was no evidence of inbreeding (mean Fis?=?-0·047). The Italian Peninsula was characterized as a geographic region with comparatively high genetic diversity for both genomes. Overall population differentiation was moderate (FST?=?0·138) and it was clear that populations formed three groups in Europe, namely France, Mediterranean/Balkan and Austria. Historic gene flow between two local Austrian populations was high and asymmetric, while recent gene flow seemed to be disrupted.ConclusionsIt is concluded that molecular mechanisms such as self-incompatibility and high gene flow distances are responsible for the observed level of allelic richness as well as for population differentiation. However, human influence could have contributed to the present genetic pattern, especially in the Mediterranean region. Comparison of historic and recent gene flow may mirror the progress of habitat fragmentation in eastern Austria.

Dataset of tree canopy structure and variation in understory composition in a boreal forest site.

Project description:A field data set from 301 forest plots was collected during peak-growing season (June 24 - July 17, 2013) around Hyytiälä forestry field station in Southern Finland (61° 50' N, 24° 17' E). For all plots, forest variables were collected following local forest inventory practice, and understory cover fractions were estimated using a traditional sampling quadrat. The understory layer in each plot was classified into four site fertility types: herb-rich, mesic, sub-xeric, and xeric. The upper understory layer fractional covers were estimated for: (1) dwarf shrubs, (2) pteridophytes and herbaceous species, and (3) graminoids, and the lower ground layer fractional covers for: (1) mosses, (2) lichens, and (3) litter (including all non-photosynthetic material). Canopy transmittance data were collected using two LAI-2000 device. The transmittance data were used to calculate effective leaf area index, true leaf area index, canopy openness and canopy cover for all plots. The data can be used to parameterize tree canopy and understory compositions in e.g., physically-based reflectance models, land surface models, and regional carbon cycle models. Interpretations of the results are provided in the related article [1].

A high-resolution wind damage model for Europe.

Project description:Extreme wind events are among the costliest natural disasters in Europe, causing severe damages every year. Despite the significant impact, damages related to windstorms are an understudied topic in academia. For damage estimates, the community mostly relies on post-disaster insurance data, which is often not publicly available. Few studies offer more generic tools, but again these are often based on non-disclosed insurance data. To offer a generic, high-resolution, reproducible, and publicly accessible tool, this study presents a wind damage model that is built around publicly available hazard, exposure, and vulnerability data. We apply the model to assess building damages related to extratropical storms in Europe, but the methodology is applicable globally, given data availability, and to other hazards for which similar risk frameworks can be applied. The results show that for Europe, coastal regions are affected the most, with the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Denmark as most affected countries. We find that the modelled damage estimates are in line with reported damages for a series of historical storms. The model is distributed as an open-source model to offer a transparent and useable windstorm damage model to a broad audience.

Bright Lu2 O3 :Eu Thin-Film Scintillators for High-Resolution Radioluminescence Microscopy.

Project description:The performance of a new thin-film Lu2 O3 :Eu scintillator for single-cell radionuclide imaging is investigated. Imaging the metabolic properties of heterogeneous cell populations in real time is an important challenge with clinical implications. An innovative technique called radioluminescence microscopy has been developed to quantitatively and sensitively measure radionuclide uptake in single cells. The most important component of this technique is the scintillator, which converts the energy released during radioactive decay into luminescent signals. The sensitivity and spatial resolution of the imaging system depend critically on the characteristics of the scintillator, that is, the material used and its geometrical configuration. Scintillators fabricated using conventional methods are relatively thick and therefore do not provide optimal spatial resolution. A thin-film Lu2 O3 :Eu scintillator is compared to a conventional 500 ?m thick CdWO4 scintillator for radioluminescence imaging. Despite its thinness, the unique scintillation properties of the Lu2 O3 :Eu scintillator allow us to capture single-positron decays with fourfold higher sensitivity, which is a significant achievement. The thin-film Lu2 O3 :Eu scintillators also yield radioluminescence images where individual cells appear smaller and better resolved on average than with the CdWO4 scintillators. Coupled with the thin-film scintillator technology, radioluminescence microscopy can yield valuable and clinically relevant data on the metabolism of single cells.

GFPLAIN250m, a global high-resolution dataset of Earth's floodplains.

Project description:Identifying floodplain boundaries is of paramount importance for earth, environmental and socioeconomic studies addressing riverine risk and resource management. However, to date, a global floodplain delineation using a homogeneous procedure has not been constructed. In this paper, we present the first, comprehensive, high-resolution, gridded dataset of Earth's floodplains at 250-m resolution (GFPLAIN250m). We use the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital terrain model and set of terrain analysis procedures for geomorphic floodplain delineations. The elevation data are processed by a fast geospatial tool for floodplain mapping available for download at https://github.com/fnardi/GFPLAIN. The GFPLAIN250m dataset can support many applications, including flood hazard mapping, habitat restoration, development studies, and the analysis of human-flood interactions. To test the GFPLAIN250m dataset, we perform a consistency analysis with floodplain delineations derived by flood hazard modelling studies in Europe.

UASOL, a large-scale high-resolution outdoor stereo dataset.

Project description:In this paper, we propose a new dataset for outdoor depth estimation from single and stereo RGB images. The dataset was acquired from the point of view of a pedestrian. Currently, the most novel approaches take advantage of deep learning-based techniques, which have proven to outperform traditional state-of-the-art computer vision methods. Nonetheless, these methods require large amounts of reliable ground-truth data. Despite there already existing several datasets that could be used for depth estimation, almost none of them are outdoor-oriented from an egocentric point of view. Our dataset introduces a large number of high-definition pairs of color frames and corresponding depth maps from a human perspective. In addition, the proposed dataset also features human interaction and great variability of data, as shown in this work.

New global high-resolution centerlines dataset of selected river systems.

Project description:We present the first high resolution (1:20,000) river centerlines shapefiles from 50 large rivers across the world. Rivers were selected based on the criteria of having more than 1000?km length and which have been reported to have a significant contribution to global fishery production. Since large rivers often span multiple countries, the degree of changes (i.e., anthropogenic or climate derived) varies from region to region. These high-resolution layers were developed to enable researchers to delineate accurate river length, from headwaters regions to their delta and assess or visualize the ongoing changes more accurately in these river systems. Further, these polylines could be used in coordination with satellite derived environmental or landscape variables for ecological research (e.g. predicting biodiversity, estimating biomass).

High-resolution forest carbon stocks and emissions in the Amazon.

Project description:Efforts to mitigate climate change through the Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) depend on mapping and monitoring of tropical forest carbon stocks and emissions over large geographic areas. With a new integrated use of satellite imaging, airborne light detection and ranging, and field plots, we mapped aboveground carbon stocks and emissions at 0.1-ha resolution over 4.3 million ha of the Peruvian Amazon, an area twice that of all forests in Costa Rica, to reveal the determinants of forest carbon density and to demonstrate the feasibility of mapping carbon emissions for REDD. We discovered previously unknown variation in carbon storage at multiple scales based on geologic substrate and forest type. From 1999 to 2009, emissions from land use totaled 1.1% of the standing carbon throughout the region. Forest degradation, such as from selective logging, increased regional carbon emissions by 47% over deforestation alone, and secondary regrowth provided an 18% offset against total gross emissions. Very high-resolution monitoring reduces uncertainty in carbon emissions for REDD programs while uncovering fundamental environmental controls on forest carbon storage and their interactions with land-use change.
