Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the Western world. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) has been less studied then coronary artery disease but is nearly as common. PAD impairs blood flow to the leg(s) and causes functional impairment, leg pain, and amputation. The last drug approved for PAD was in 1999.
