Diamond formation in the deep lower mantle: a high-pressure reaction of MgCO₃ and SiO₂.

ABSTRACT: Diamond is an evidence for carbon existing in the deep Earth. Some diamonds are considered to have originated at various depth ranges from the mantle transition zone to the lower mantle. These diamonds are expected to carry significant information about the deep Earth. Here, we determined the phase relations in the MgCO₃-SiO₂ system up to 152 GPa and 3,100 K using a double sided laser-heated diamond anvil cell combined with in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. MgCO₃ transforms from magnesite to the high-pressure polymorph of MgCO₃, phase II, above 80 GPa. A reaction between MgCO₃ phase II and SiO₂ (CaCl₂-type SiO₂ or seifertite) to form diamond and MgSiO₃ (bridgmanite or post-perovsktite) was identified in the deep lower mantle conditions. These observations suggested that the reaction of the MgCO₃ phase II with SiO₂ causes formation of super-deep diamond in cold slabs descending into the deep lower mantle.

High nitrogen solubility in stishovite (SiO2) under lower mantle conditions.

Project description:Nitrogen is a crucial volatile element in the early Earth's evolution and the origin of life. Despite its importance, nitrogen's behavior in the Earth's interior remains poorly understood. Compared to other volatile elements, nitrogen is depleted in the Earth's atmosphere (the so-called "missing nitrogen"), calling for a hidden deep reservoir. To investigate nitrogen's behavior in the deep Earth including how the reservoir formed, high-pressure and high-temperature experiments were conducted at 28 GPa and 1,400-1,700 °C. To reproduce the conditions in the lower mantle, the redox was controlled using a Fe-FeO buffer. We observed that depending on the temperature conditions, stishovite can incorporate up to 90-404 ppm nitrogen, experimentally demonstrating that stishovite has the highest nitrogen solubility among the deep mantle minerals. Stishovite is the main mineral component of subducted nitrogen-rich sedimentary rocks and eroded continental crust that are eventually transported down to the lower mantle. Our results suggest that nitrogen could have been continuously transported into the lower mantle via subduction, ever since plate tectonics began.

Dehydrogenation of goethite in Earth's deep lower mantle.

Project description:The cycling of hydrogen influences the structure, composition, and stratification of Earth's interior. Our recent discovery of pyrite-structured iron peroxide (designated as the P phase) and the formation of the P phase from dehydrogenation of goethite FeO2H implies the separation of the oxygen and hydrogen cycles in the deep lower mantle beneath 1,800 km. Here we further characterize the residual hydrogen, x, in the P-phase FeO2Hx Using a combination of theoretical simulations and high-pressure-temperature experiments, we calibrated the x dependence of molar volume of the P phase. Within the current range of experimental conditions, we observed a compositional range of P phase of 0.39 < x < 0.81, corresponding to 19-61% dehydrogenation. Increasing temperature and heating time will help release hydrogen and lower x, suggesting that dehydrogenation could be approaching completion at the high-temperature conditions of the lower mantle over extended geological time. Our observations indicate a fundamental change in the mode of hydrogen release from dehydration in the upper mantle to dehydrogenation in the deep lower mantle, thus differentiating the deep hydrogen and hydrous cycles.

Mantle-slab interaction and redox mechanism of diamond formation.

Project description:Subduction tectonics imposes an important role in the evolution of the interior of the Earth and its global carbon cycle; however, the mechanism of the mantle-slab interaction remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate the results of high-pressure redox-gradient experiments on the interactions between Mg-Ca-carbonate and metallic iron, modeling the processes at the mantle-slab boundary; thereby, we present mechanisms of diamond formation both ahead of and behind the redox front. It is determined that, at oxidized conditions, a low-temperature Ca-rich carbonate melt is generated. This melt acts as both the carbon source and crystallization medium for diamond, whereas at reduced conditions, diamond crystallizes only from the Fe-C melt. The redox mechanism revealed in this study is used to explain the contrasting heterogeneity of natural diamonds, as seen in the composition of inclusions, carbon isotopic composition, and nitrogen impurity content.

Coupled deep-mantle carbon-water cycle: Evidence from lower-mantle diamonds.

Project description:Diamonds form in a variety of environments between subducted crust, lithospheric and deep mantle. Recently, deep source diamonds with inclusions of the high-pressure H2O-phase ice-VII were discovered. By correlating the pressures of ice-VII inclusions with those of other high-pressure inclusions, we assess quantitatively the pressures and temperatures of their entrapment. We show that the ice-VII-bearing diamonds formed at depths down to 800 ± 60 km but at temperatures 200-500 K below average mantle temperature that match the pressure-temperature conditions of decomposing dense hydrous mantle silicates. Our work presents strong evidence for coupled recycling of water and carbon in the deep mantle based on natural samples.

Mesoporous TiO2-SiO2 adsorbent for ultra-deep desulfurization of organic-S at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.

Project description:Ultra-deep desulfurization is a major requirement for upgrading the quality of fuel and power sources for fuel-cells. A series of mesoporous TiO2-SiO2 adsorbents were prepared and investigated for ultra-deep adsorption of benzothiophene (BT) and dibenzothiophene (DBT) from model fuel at ambient conditions. The adsorbents were characterized via SEM, XRD, N2-BET, FT-IR and NH3-TPD techniques. The results revealed that the adsorbent containing 40 wt% silica achieved the desulfurization efficiency higher than 99% when the initial sulfur concentration in the model fuel was 550 ppm. The high desulfurization performance of the adsorbent was attributed to its large specific surface and surface acidity. It also achieved a high sulfur adsorption capacity of 7.1 mg g-1 in a fixed-bed test, while its static saturated sulfur capacity was 13.7 mg g-1. The order of selectivity towards the adsorption of different organic sulfurs was DBT > BT&DBT > BT. The kinetics of the adsorption of organic sulfur was studied and the results indicated that the pseudo-second order model appropriately fitted the kinetics data. Furthermore, the used adsorbent can be easily regenerated and the desulphurization efficiency of the recovered adsorbent after five regeneration cycles was still maintained at 94.5%.

Redox-freezing and nucleation of diamond via magnetite formation in the Earth's mantle.

Project description:Diamonds and their inclusions are unique probes into the deep Earth, tracking the deep carbon cycle to >800 km. Understanding the mechanisms of carbon mobilization and freezing is a prerequisite for quantifying the fluxes of carbon in the deep Earth. Here we show direct evidence for the formation of diamond by redox reactions involving FeNi sulfides. Transmission Kikuchi Diffraction identifies an arrested redox reaction from pyrrhotite to magnetite included in diamond. The magnetite corona shows coherent epitaxy with relict pyrrhotite and diamond, indicating that diamond nucleated on magnetite. Furthermore, structures inherited from h-Fe3O4 define a phase transformation at depths of 320-330 km, the base of the Kaapvaal lithosphere. The oxidation of pyrrhotite to magnetite is an important trigger of diamond precipitation in the upper mantle, explaining the presence of these phases in diamonds.

High-pressure phase of brucite stable at Earth's mantle transition zone and lower mantle conditions.

Project description:We investigate the high-pressure phase diagram of the hydrous mineral brucite, Mg(OH)2, using structure search algorithms and ab initio simulations. We predict a high-pressure phase stable at pressure and temperature conditions found in cold subducting slabs in Earth's mantle transition zone and lower mantle. This prediction implies that brucite can play a much more important role in water transport and storage in Earth's interior than hitherto thought. The predicted high-pressure phase, stable in calculations between 20 and 35 GPa and up to 800 K, features MgO6 octahedral units arranged in the anatase-TiO2 structure. Our findings suggest that brucite will transform from a layered to a compact 3D network structure before eventual decomposition into periclase and ice. We show that the high-pressure phase has unique spectroscopic fingerprints that should allow for straightforward detection in experiments. The phase also has distinct elastic properties that might make its direct detection in the deep Earth possible with geophysical methods.

Iron silicate perovskite and postperovskite in the deep lower mantle.

Project description:Ferromagnesian silicates are the dominant constituents of the Earth's mantle, which comprise more than 80% of our planet by volume. To interpret the low shear-velocity anomalies in the lower mantle, we need to construct a reliable transformation diagram of ferromagnesian silicates over a wide pressure-temperature (P-T) range. While MgSiO3 in the perovskite structure has been extensively studied due to its dominance on Earth, phase transformations of iron silicates under the lower mantle conditions remain unresolved. In this study, we have obtained an iron silicate phase in the perovskite (Pv) structure using synthetic fayalite (Fe2SiO4) as the starting material under P-T conditions of the lower mantle. Chemical analyses revealed an unexpectedly high Fe/Si ratio of 1.72(3) for the Pv phase in coexistence with metallic iron particles, indicating incorporation of about 25 mol% Fe2O3 in the Pv phase with an approximate chemical formula (Fe2+0.75Fe3+0.25)(Fe3+0.25Si0.75)O3. We further obtained an iron silicate phase in the postperovskite (PPv) structure above 95 GPa. The calculated curves of compressional (VP) and shear velocity (VS) of iron silicate Pv and PPv as a function of pressure are nearly parallel to those of MgSiO3, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the iron silicate Pv and PPv are the densest phases among all the reported silicates stable at P-T conditions of the lower mantle. The high ferric iron content in the silicate phase and the spin-crossover of ferric iron at the Si-site above ~55 GPa should be taken into account in order to interpret the seismic observations. Our results would provide crucial information for constraining the geophysical and geochemical models of the lower mantle.

Diamond formation in an electric field under deep Earth conditions.

Project description:Most natural diamonds are formed in Earth's lithospheric mantle; however, the exact mechanisms behind their genesis remain debated. Given the occurrence of electrochemical processes in Earth's mantle and the high electrical conductivity of mantle melts and fluids, we have developed a model whereby localized electric fields play a central role in diamond formation. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a diamond crystallization mechanism that operates under lithospheric mantle pressure-temperature conditions (6.3 and 7.5 gigapascals; 1300° to 1600°C) through the action of an electric potential applied across carbonate or carbonate-silicate melts. In this process, the carbonate-rich melt acts as both the carbon source and the crystallization medium for diamond, which forms in assemblage with mantle minerals near the cathode. Our results clearly demonstrate that electric fields should be considered a key additional factor influencing diamond crystallization, mantle mineral-forming processes, carbon isotope fractionation, and the global carbon cycle.

Evidence for complex iron oxides in the deep mantle from FeNi(Cu) inclusions in superdeep diamond.

Project description:The recent discovery in high-pressure experiments of compounds stable to 24-26 GPa with Fe4O5, Fe5O6, Fe7O9, and Fe9O11 stoichiometry has raised questions about their existence within the Earth's mantle. Incorporating both ferric and ferrous iron in their structures, these oxides if present within the Earth could also provide insight into diamond-forming processes at depth in the planet. Here we report the discovery of metallic particles, dominantly of FeNi (Fe0.71Ni0.24Cu0.05), in close spatial relation with nearly pure magnetite grains from a so-called superdeep diamond from the Earth's mantle. The microstructural relation of magnetite within a ferropericlase (Mg0.60Fe0.40)O matrix suggests exsolution of the former. Taking into account the bulk chemistry reconstructed from the FeNi(Cu) alloy, we propose that it formed by decomposition of a complex metal M oxide (M 4O5) with a stoichiometry of (Fe3+ 2.15Fe2+ 1.59Ni2+ 0.17Cu+ 0.04)Σ = 3.95O5 We further suggest a possible link between this phase and variably oxidized ferropericlase that is commonly trapped in superdeep diamond. The observation of FeNi(Cu) metal in relation to magnetite exsolved from ferropericlase is interpreted as arising from a multistage process that starts from diamond encapsulation of ferropericlase followed by decompression and cooling under oxidized conditions, leading to the formation of complex oxides such as Fe4O5 that subsequently decompose at shallower P-T conditions.
