The identity of Callicarpa minutiflora Y. Y. Qian (Lamiaceae) and taxonomic synonym of C. longifolia Lamarck.

ABSTRACT: Although the specific epithet of Callicarpa minutiflora Y. Y. Qian has been revised for many times, during the study of the genus Callicarpa, we find that Callicarpa minutiflora Y. Y. Qian is identical to Callicarpa longifolia Lamarck by a series of morphologic characters. In order to avoid more confusion, here Callicarpa minutiflora Y. Y. Qian is reduced as a synonym of Callicarpa longifolia Lamarck.

Project description:Callicarpa longifolia Lamk. var. floccosa Schauer is a species with medicinal and ornamental values. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome of C. longifolia var. floccose is reported. The chloroplast genome of this species is 154,285 bp in length and contains a typical circular quadripartite structure. There are two inverted repeats of 25,700 bp, which is separated by a large single-copy region of 85,008 bp and a small single-copy region of 17,877 bp. The complete chloroplast contains 112 distinct genes, including 78 protein-coding, 30 tRNAs and 4 rRNAs genes. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that C. longifolia var. floccose is closely associated with C. formosana.

On the identity of Thymushumifususvar.aureopunctatus (Lamiaceae) and taxonomic notes on the Th.richardii complex.

Project description:The name Thymushumifususvar.aureopunctatus, described from Bosnia and Herzegovina, is lectotypified, and its taxonomic value is discussed. Thymusrichardiisubsp.richardii is currently considered an endemic subspecies common to Mallorca (Balearic Islands) and Bosnia and Herzegovina from the Balkan Peninsula. Specimens identified as Th.richardii from both Balearic Islands and Bosnia and Herzegovina were studied to determine if they are indeed the same taxonomic entity. Detailed micromorphological observations and morphometric analysis, suggest that the Balkan plants (Th.humifususvar.aureopunctatus) and the Majorcan populations (Th.richardiisubsp.richardii) are clearly separate entities. For the former name, based on morphological, phytochemical, biogeographical and present results, we propose the subspecific rank, as Th.richardiisubsp.aureopunctatuscomb. & stat. nov. Full descriptions of all five subspecies currently accepted within Th.richardii are provided.

Generation of a chromosome-scale genome assembly of the insect-repellent terpenoid-producing Lamiaceae species, Callicarpa americana.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Plants exhibit wide chemical diversity due to the production of specialized metabolites that function as pollinator attractants, defensive compounds, and signaling molecules. Lamiaceae (mints) are known for their chemodiversity and have been cultivated for use as culinary herbs, as well as sources of insect repellents, health-promoting compounds, and fragrance. FINDINGS:We report the chromosome-scale genome assembly of Callicarpa americana L. (American beautyberry), a species within the early-diverging Callicarpoideae clade of Lamiaceae, known for its metallic purple fruits and use as an insect repellent due to its production of terpenoids. Using long-read sequencing and Hi-C scaffolding, we generated a 506.1-Mb assembly spanning 17 pseudomolecules with N50 contig and N50 scaffold sizes of 7.5 and 29.0 Mb, respectively. In all, 32,164 genes were annotated, including 53 candidate terpene synthases and 47 putative clusters of specialized metabolite biosynthetic pathways. Our analyses revealed 3 putative whole-genome duplication events, which, together with local tandem duplications, contributed to gene family expansion of terpene synthases. Kolavenyl diphosphate is a gateway to many of the bioactive terpenoids in C. americana; experimental validation confirmed that CamTPS2 encodes kolavenyl diphosphate synthase. Syntenic analyses with Tectona grandis L. f. (teak), a member of the Tectonoideae clade of Lamiaceae known for exceptionally strong wood resistant to insects, revealed 963 collinear blocks and 21,297 C. americana syntelogs. CONCLUSIONS:Access to the C. americana genome provides a road map for rapid discovery of genes encoding plant-derived agrichemicals and a key resource for understanding the evolution of chemical diversity in Lamiaceae.

Project description:Plants classified to the genus Callicarpa L. have important medicinal and ornamental value. Here, we report and characterize the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of C. bodinieri to provide molecular basis for the further studies on the phylogeny analysis of this genus. The cp genome is 154,183 bp in length and is organized with a typical quadripartite structure, containing two inverted repeats of 25,701 bp separated by a large single-copy region of 84,956 bp and a small single-copy region of 17,825 bp. The cp genome of C. bodinieri contains 112 distinct genes, including 78 protein-coding, 30 tRNAs and 4 rRNAs genes. The phylogenetic analysis showed that C. bodinieri is fully resolved in a clade with C. nudiflora, sister to the clade of C. formosana and C. longifolia var. floccosa.

The complete chloroplast genome of Callicarpa rubella Lindl. (Lamiaceae) from Guangxi, China: genome structure and phylogenetic analysis.

Project description:The relationship between Callicarpa rubella Lindl. and its infraspecific taxa has troubled researchers for a long time. Here, we reported for the first time the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of C. rubella to investigate its phylogenetic position and provide more sequencing information for further studies about the relationship between C. rubella and its related species. The cp genome of C. rubella was 154,202 bp in length and displayed a typical quadripartite angiosperm structure, containing two inverted repeat (IR) regions of 25,701 bp, a large single-copy (LSC) region of 84,968 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 17,832 bp. It contained 87 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes and 8 rRNA genes. The analysis fully resolved C. rubella was in a clade with C. bodinieri and C. nudiflora. The results indicated Callicarpa formed a sister relationship with Dicrastylis parvifolia in Lamiaceae.

Taxonomic notes on Scutellaria taipeiensis (Lamiaceae) from morphological and molecular data.

Project description:The genus Scutellaria comprises eight species distributed from 50 to 2000 m in Taiwan. Amongst them, S. barbata and S. taipeiensis are very similar on the basis of morphological and plastid DNA sequence information. Therefore, a comprehensive study of the taxonomic status of S. taipeiensis is necessary. We reviewed the herbarium sheets, related literature and protologues and compared morphologies of these two species, as well as their phylogenetic relationships. All evidence, including the diagnostic characters between S. taipeiensis and S. barbata, suggest that they belonged to a single species rather than two. As a result, S. taipeiensis is treated as a synonym of S. barbata.

Project description:Callicarpa siongsaiensis Metcalf is a drought resistance shrub with ornamental potential. In this study, Illumina sequencing data were used to assemble the complete chloroplast genome of Callicarpa siongsaiensis. The length of the circular genome is 154,144 bp. It contains a total of 130 genes, including 87 protein-coding, 36 tRNA, and seven rRNA genes. The GC content of the chloroplast genome of C. siongsaiensis is 38.09%. The phylogenetic analysis fully resolved C. siongsaiensis in a clade with C. formosana.

The complete chloroplast genome of Callicarpa integerrima var. chinensis (Lamiaceae) from Guilin, China, a potential medicinal plant.

Project description:Callicarpa integerrima var. chinensis is one of the traditional medical herbs which has the potential for multiple diseases' treatment. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome sequence of C. integerrima var. chinensis was sequenced and assembled. A typical quadripartite structure was observed in the chloroplast genome of C. integerrima var. chinensis which was 154179 bp in length, including a pair of inverted repeat (IR) regions (each 51396 bp) separated by a large single-copy region (LSC) of 84927 bp and a small single-copy region (SSC) of 17856 bp, and the overall GC contents of the chloroplast genome was 38.08%. Additionally, we annotated 132 genes, including 86 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis was adopted which confirmed the position of C. integerrima var. chinensis was close to the congeneric C. formosana and C. siongsaiensis.
