The Parametric Study and Fine-Tuning of Bow-Tie Slot Antenna with Loaded Stub.

ABSTRACT: A printed Bow-Tie slot antenna with loaded stub is proposed and the effects of changing the dimensions of the slot area, the stub and load sizes are considered in this paper. These parameters have a considerable effect on the antenna characteristics as well as its performance. An in-depth parametric study of these dimensions is presented. This paper proposes the necessary conditions for initial approximation of dimensions needed to design this antenna. In order to achieve the desired performance of the antenna fine tuning of all sizes of these parameters is required. The parametric studies used in this paper provide proper trends for initiation and tuning the design. A prototype of the antenna for 1.7GHz to 2.6GHz band is fabricated. Measurements conducted verify that the designed antenna has wideband characteristics with 50% bandwidth around the center frequency of 2.1GHz. Conducted measurements for reflection coefficient (S11) and radiation pattern also validate our simulation results.

Near-field enhanced ultraviolet resonance Raman spectroscopy using aluminum bow-tie nano-antenna.

Project description:An aluminum bow-tie nano-antenna is combined with the resonance Raman effect in the deep ultraviolet to dramatically increase the sensitivity of Raman spectra to a small volume of material, such as benzene used here. We further demonstrate gradient-field Raman peaks for several strong infrared modes. We achieve a gain of [Formula: see text] in signal intensity from the near field enhancement due to the surface plasmon resonance in the aluminum nanostructure. The on-line resonance enhancement contributes another factor of several thousands, limited by the laser line width. Thus, an overall gain of hundreds of million is achieved.

Evolution of bow-tie architectures in biology.

Project description:Bow-tie or hourglass structure is a common architectural feature found in many biological systems. A bow-tie in a multi-layered structure occurs when intermediate layers have much fewer components than the input and output layers. Examples include metabolism where a handful of building blocks mediate between multiple input nutrients and multiple output biomass components, and signaling networks where information from numerous receptor types passes through a small set of signaling pathways to regulate multiple output genes. Little is known, however, about how bow-tie architectures evolve. Here, we address the evolution of bow-tie architectures using simulations of multi-layered systems evolving to fulfill a given input-output goal. We find that bow-ties spontaneously evolve when the information in the evolutionary goal can be compressed. Mathematically speaking, bow-ties evolve when the rank of the input-output matrix describing the evolutionary goal is deficient. The maximal compression possible (the rank of the goal) determines the size of the narrowest part of the network-that is the bow-tie. A further requirement is that a process is active to reduce the number of links in the network, such as product-rule mutations, otherwise a non-bow-tie solution is found in the evolutionary simulations. This offers a mechanism to understand a common architectural principle of biological systems, and a way to quantitate the effective rank of the goals under which they evolved.

Understanding tie strength in social networks using a local "bow tie" framework.

Project description:Understanding factors associated with tie strength in social networks is essential in a wide variety of settings. With the internet and cellular phones providing additional avenues of communication, measuring and inferring tie strength has become much more complex. We introduce the social bow tie framework, which consists of a focal tie and all actors connected to either or both of the two focal nodes on either side of the focal tie. We also define several intuitive and interpretable metrics that quantify properties of the bow tie which enable us to investigate associations between the strength of the "central" tie and properties of the bow tie. We combine the bow tie framework with machine learning to investigate what aspects of the bow tie are most predictive of tie strength in two very different types of social networks, a collection of medium-sized social networks from 75 rural villages in India and a nationwide call network of European mobile phone users. Our results show that tie strength depends not only on the properties of shared friends, but also on non-shared friends, those observable to only one person in the tie, hence introducing a fundamental asymmetry to social interaction.

An unusual 'bow tie' image in pacemaker implantation.

Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) and absent right superior vena cava could be an arrhythmogenic source of atrial arrhythmias and cardiac conduction disease. We represent dual-chamber pacemaker implantation in a patient with a very rare upper venous system anomaly, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, sick sinus syndrome, that cause unusual fluoroscopic image.

Plasmonic eigenmodes in individual and bow-tie graphene nanotriangles.

Project description:In classical electrodynamics, nanostructured graphene is commonly modeled by the computationally demanding problem of a three-dimensional conducting film of atomic-scale thickness. Here, we propose an efficient alternative two-dimensional electrostatic approach where all calculation procedures are restricted to the graphene sheet. Furthermore, to explore possible quantum effects, we perform tight-binding calculations, adopting a random-phase approximation. We investigate multiple plasmon modes in 20 nm equilateral triangles of graphene, treating the optical response classically as well as quantum mechanically. Compared to the classical plasmonic spectrum which is "blind" to the edge termination, we find that the quantum plasmon frequencies exhibit blueshifts in the case of armchair edge termination of the underlying atomic lattice, while redshifts are found for zigzag edges. Furthermore, we find spectral features in the zigzag case which are associated with electronic edge states not present for armchair termination. Merging pairs of triangles into dimers, plasmon hybridization leads to energy splitting that appears strongest in classical calculations while splitting is lower for armchair edges and even more reduced for zigzag edges. Our various results illustrate a surprising phenomenon: Even 20 nm large graphene structures clearly exhibit quantum plasmonic features due to atomic-scale details in the edge termination.

Gated Bow-Tie Diode for Microwave to Sub-Terahertz Detection.

Project description:We propose a new design microwave radiation sensor based on a selectively doped semiconductor structure of asymmetrical shape (so-called bow-tie diode). The novelty of the design comes down to the gating of the active layer of the diode above different regions of the two-dimensional electron channel. The gate influences the sensing properties of the bow-tie diode depending on the nature of voltage detected across the ungated one as well as on the location of the gate in regard to the diode contacts. When the gate is located by the wide contact, the voltage sensitivity increases ten times as compared to the case of the ungated diode, and the detected voltage holds the same polarity of the thermoelectric electromotive force of hot electrons in an asymmetrically shaped n-n+ junction. Another remarkable effect of the gate placed by the wide contact is weak dependence of the detected voltage on frequency which makes such a microwave diode to be a proper candidate for the detection of electromagnetic radiation in the microwave and sub-terahertz frequency range. When the gate is situated beside the narrow contact, the two orders of sensitivity magnitude increase are valid in the microwaves but the voltage sensitivity is strongly frequency-dependent for higher frequencies.

Highly modular bow-tie gene circuits with programmable dynamic behaviour.

Project description:Synthetic gene circuits often require extensive mutual optimization of their components for successful operation, while modular and programmable design platforms are rare. A possible solution lies in the 'bow-tie' architecture, which stipulates a focal component-a 'knot'-uncoupling circuits' inputs and outputs, simplifying component swapping, and introducing additional layer of control. Here we construct, in cultured human cells, synthetic bow-tie circuits that transduce microRNA inputs into protein outputs with independently programmable logical and dynamic behaviour. The latter is adjusted via two different knot configurations: a transcriptional activator causing the outputs to track input changes reversibly, and a recombinase-based cascade, converting transient inputs into permanent actuation. We characterize the circuits in HEK293 cells, confirming their modularity and scalability, and validate them using endogenous microRNA inputs in additional cell lines. This platform can be used for biotechnological and biomedical applications in vitro, in vivo and potentially in human therapy.

Revisiting the evolution of bow-tie architecture in signaling networks.

Project description:Bow-tie architecture is a layered network structure that has a narrow middle layer with multiple inputs and outputs. Such structures are widely seen in the molecular networks in cells, suggesting that a universal evolutionary mechanism underlies the emergence of bow-tie architecture. The previous theoretical studies have implemented evolutionary simulations of the feedforward network to satisfy a given input-output goal and proposed that the bow-tie architecture emerges when the ideal input-output relation is given as a rank-deficient matrix with mutations in network link intensities in a multiplicative manner. Here, we report that the bow-tie network inevitably appears when the link intensities representing molecular interactions are small at the initial condition of the evolutionary simulation, regardless of the rank of the goal matrix. Our dynamical system analysis clarifies the mechanisms underlying the emergence of the bow-tie structure. Further, we demonstrate that the increase in the input-output matrix reduces the width of the middle layer, resulting in the emergence of bow-tie architecture, even when evolution starts from large link intensities. Our data suggest that bow-tie architecture emerges as a side effect of evolution rather than as a result of evolutionary adaptation.

Data of CT bow tie filter profiles from three modern CT scanners.

Project description:As one of the key hardware components in Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, a bowtie filter reduces unnecessary radiation dose to the peripheries of a patient and equalizes radiation signal to the detector. Knowledge of the exact profiles from different bowtie filters are critical to model the imaging process of CT scanners and to estimate patient dose. However, bowtie filter profiles remain proprietary to most CT vendors. The data of bowtie profiles reported here were directly measured using a solid-state linear-array detector from three modern CT scanners (GE Revolution, Philips iQon, and Toshiba Aquilion ONE Vision. The detailed method, including associated geometrical calibration and data validation, was previously published. This data article is mainly to present the updated bowtie profile data measured after our previous publication.

Light harvesting in purple bacteria does not rely on resonance fine-tuning in peripheral antenna complexes.

Project description:The ring-like peripheral light-harvesting complex 2 (LH2) expressed by many phototrophic purple bacteria is a popular model system in biological light-harvesting research due to its robustness, small size, and known crystal structure. Furthermore, the availability of structural variants with distinct electronic structures and optical properties has made this group of light harvesters an attractive testing ground for studies of structure-function relationships in biological systems. LH2 is one of several pigment-protein complexes for which a link between functionality and effects such as excitonic coherence and vibronic coupling has been proposed. While a direct connection has not yet been demonstrated, many such interactions are highly sensitive to resonance conditions, and a dependence of intra-complex dynamics on detailed electronic structure might be expected. To gauge the sensitivity of energy-level structure and relaxation dynamics to naturally occurring structural changes, we compare the photo-induced dynamics in two structurally distinct LH2 variants. Using polarization-controlled 2D electronic spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures, we directly access information on dynamic and static disorder in the complexes. The simultaneous optimal spectral and temporal resolution of these experiments further allows us to characterize the ultrafast energy relaxation, including exciton transport within the complexes. Despite the variations in PPC molecular structure manifesting as clear differences in electronic structure and disorder, the energy-transport and-relaxation dynamics remain remarkably similar. This indicates that the light-harvesting functionality of purple bacteria within a single LH2 complex is highly robust to structural perturbations and likely does not rely on finely tuned electronic- or electron-vibrational resonance conditions.
