Photoreceptor spectral tuning by colorful, multilayered facet lenses in long-legged fly eyes (Dolichopodidae).

ABSTRACT: The facet lenses of the compound eyes of long-legged flies (Dolichopodidae) feature a striking, interlaced coloration pattern, existing of alternating rows of green-yellow and orange-red reflecting facets, due to dielectric multilayers located distally in the facet lenses (Bernard and Miller. Invest Ophthalmol 7:416-434 (1968). We investigated this phenomenon in the dolichopodid Dolichopus nitidus by applying microspectrophotometry, electron microscopy and optical modeling. The measured narrow-band reflectance spectra, peaking at ~540 and ~590 nm with bandwidth ~105 nm, are well explained by a refractive index oscillating sinusoidally in six periods around a mean value of about 1.44 with amplitude 0.6. The facet lens reflectance spectra are associated with a spectrally restricted, reduced transmittance, which causes modified spectral sensitivities of the underlying photoreceptors. Based on the modeling and electroretinography of the dolichopodid Condylostylus japonicus we conjecture that the green and orange facets narrow the spectral bandwidths of blue and green central photoreceptors, respectively, thus possibly improving color and/or polarization vision.

Project description:PurposeDetect changes in the neurosensory retina using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD OCT) imaging over drusen in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Quantitative imaging biomarkers may aid in defining risk of disease progression.DesignCross-sectional, case-control study evaluating SD OCT testing in AMD.Participants and controlsSeventeen eyes of 12 subjects with nonneovascular AMD and drusen and 17 eyes of 10 age-matched control subjects.MethodsSpectral-domain OCT imaging across the fovea in the study eye with multiple 10- to 12-mm scans of 1000 A scans each.Main outcome measuresIn summed SD OCT scans, the height of individual retinal layers either over drusen or at corresponding locations in the control eye and qualitative changes in retinal layers over drusen. Secondary measures included photoreceptor layer (PRL) area, inner retinal area, and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)/drusen area.ResultsThe PRL was thinned over 97% of drusen, average PRL thickness was reduced by 27.5% over drusen compared with over a similar location in controls, and the finding of a difference was valid and significant (P=0.004). Photoreceptor outer segments were absent over at least 1 druse in 47% of eyes. Despite thinning of the PRL, inner retinal thickness remained unchanged. We observed 2 types of hyperreflective abnormalities in the neurosensory retina over drusen. Distinct hyperreflective speckled patterns occurred over drusen in 41% of AMD eyes and never in control eyes. A prominent hyperreflective haze was present in the photoreceptor nuclear layer over drusen in 67% of AMD eyes and more subtly in the photoreceptor nuclear layer in 18% of control eyes (no drusen).ConclusionsWith SD OCT as used in this study, we can easily detect and measure changes in PRL over drusen. Decreased PRL thickness over drusen suggests a degenerative process, with cell loss leading to decreased visual function. The hyperreflective foci overlying drusen are likely to represent progression of disease RPE cell migration into the retina and possible photoreceptor degeneration or glial scar formation. A longitudinal study using SD OCT to examine and measure the neurosensory retina over drusen will resolve the timeline of degenerative changes relative to druse formation.

Project description:Colorful feathers have long been assumed to be conspicuous to predators, and hence likely to incur costs due to enhanced predation risk. However, many mammals that prey on birds have dichromatic visual systems with only two types of color-sensitive visual receptors, rather than the three and four photoreceptors characteristic of humans and most birds, respectively. Here, we use a combination of multispectral imaging, reflectance spectroscopy, color vision modelling and visual texture analysis to compare the visual signals available to conspecifics and to mammalian predators from multicolored feathers from the Indian peacock (Pavo cristatus), as well as red and yellow parrot feathers. We also model the effects of distance-dependent blurring due to visual acuity. When viewed by birds against green vegetation, most of the feathers studied are estimated to have color and brightness contrasts similar to values previously found for ripe fruit. On the other hand, for dichromat mammalian predators, visual contrasts for these feathers were only weakly detectable and often below detection thresholds for typical viewing distances. We also show that for dichromat mammal vision models, the peacock's train has below-detection threshold color and brightness contrasts and visual textures that match various foliage backgrounds. These findings are consistent with many feathers of similar hue to those studied here being inconspicuous, and in some cases potentially cryptic, in the eyes of common mammalian predators of adult birds. Given that birds perform many conspicuous motions and behaviors, this study suggests that mammalian predators are more likely to use other sensory modalities (e.g., motion detection, hearing, and olfaction), rather than color vision, to detect avian prey. This suggests new directions for future behavioral studies and emphasizes the importance of understanding the influence of the sensory ecology of predators in the evolution of animal coloration.
