Microwave photon Fock state generation by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage.

ABSTRACT: The deterministic generation of non-classical states of light, including squeezed states, Fock states and Bell states, plays an important role in quantum information processing and exploration of the physics of quantum entanglement. Preparation of these non-classical states in resonators is non-trivial due to their inherent harmonicity. Here we use stimulated Raman adiabatic passage to generate microwave photon Fock states in a superconducting circuit quantum electrodynamics system comprised of a fixed-frequency transmon qubit in a three-dimensional microwave cavity at 20?mK. A two-photon process is employed to overcome a first order forbidden transition and the first, second and third Fock states are demonstrated. We also demonstrate how this all-microwave technique can be used to generate an arbitrary superposition of Fock states. Simulations of the system are in excellent agreement with the data and fidelities of 89%, 68% and 43% are inferred for the first three Fock states respectively.

Project description:The adiabatic manipulation of quantum states is a powerful technique that opened up new directions in quantum engineering--enabling tests of fundamental concepts such as geometrical phases and topological transitions, and holding the promise of alternative models of quantum computation. Here we benchmark the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage for circuit quantum electrodynamics by employing the first three levels of a transmon qubit. In this ladder configuration, we demonstrate a population transfer efficiency >80% between the ground state and the second excited state using two adiabatic Gaussian-shaped control microwave pulses. By doing quantum tomography at successive moments during the Raman pulses, we investigate the transfer of the population in time domain. Furthermore, we show that this protocol can be reversed by applying a third adiabatic pulse, we study a hybrid nondiabatic-adiabatic sequence, and we present experimental results for a quasi-degenerate intermediate level.

Experimental realization of stimulated Raman shortcut-to-adiabatic passage with cold atoms.

Project description:Accurate control of a quantum system is a fundamental requirement in many areas of modern science ranging from quantum information processing to high-precision measurements. A significantly important goal in quantum control is preparing a desired state as fast as possible, with sufficiently high fidelity allowed by available resources and experimental constraints. Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is a robust way to realize high-fidelity state transfer but it requires a sufficiently long operation time to satisfy the adiabatic criteria. Here we theoretically propose and then experimentally demonstrate a shortcut-to-adiabatic protocol to speed-up the STIRAP. By modifying the shapes of the Raman pulses, we experimentally realize a fast and high-fidelity stimulated Raman shortcut-to-adiabatic passage that is robust against control parameter variations. The all-optical, robust and fast protocol demonstrated here provides an efficient and practical way to control quantum systems.

Nanoscale nonreciprocity via photon-spin-polarized stimulated Raman scattering.

Project description:Time reversal symmetry stands as a fundamental restriction on the vast majority of optical systems and devices. The reciprocal nature of Maxwell's equations in linear, time-invariant media adds complexity and scale to photonic diodes, isolators, circulators and also sets fundamental efficiency limits on optical energy conversion. Though many theoretical proposals and low frequency demonstrations of nonreciprocity exist, Faraday rotation remains the only known nonreciprocal mechanism that persists down to the atomic scale. Here, we present photon-spin-polarized stimulated Raman scattering as a new nonreciprocal optical phenomenon which has, in principle, no lower size limit. Exploiting this process, we numerically demonstrate nanoscale nonreciprocal transmission of free-space beams at near-infrared frequencies with a 250 nm thick silicon metasurface as well as a fully-subwavelength plasmonic gap nanoantenna. In revealing all-optical spin-splitting, our results provide a foundation for compact nonreciprocal communication and computing technologies, from nanoscale optical isolators and full-duplex nanoantennas to topologically-protected networks.

Accessing Excited State Molecular Vibrations by Femtosecond Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy.

Project description:Excited state vibrations are crucial for determining the photophysical and photochemical properties of molecular compounds. Stimulated Raman scattering can coherently stimulate and probe molecular vibrations with optical pulses, but it is generally restricted to ground state properties. Working under resonance conditions enables cross-section enhancement and selective excitation to a targeted electronic level but is hampered by an increased signal complexity due to the presence of overlapping spectral contributions. Here, we show how detailed information about ground and excited state vibrations can be disentangled by exploiting the relative time delay between Raman and probe pulses to control the excited state population, combined with a diagrammatic formalism to dissect the pathways concurring with the signal generation. The proposed method is then exploited to elucidate the vibrational properties of the ground and excited electronic states in the paradigmatic case of cresyl violet. We anticipate that the presented approach holds the potential for selective mapping of the reaction coordinates pertaining to transient electronic stages implied in photoactive compounds.

Shortcuts to adiabatic passage for fast generation of Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states by transitionless quantum driving.

Project description:Berry's approach on "transitionless quantum driving" shows how to set a Hamiltonian which drives the dynamics of a system along instantaneous eigenstates of a reference Hamiltonian to reproduce the same final result of an adiabatic process in a shorter time. In this paper, motivated by transitionless quantum driving, we construct shortcuts to adiabatic passage in a three-atom system to create the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states with the help of quantum Zeno dynamics and of non-resonant lasers. The influence of various decoherence processes is discussed by numerical simulation and the result proves that the scheme is fast and robust against decoherence and operational imperfection.

Stimulated photon emission and two-photon Raman scattering in a coupled-cavity QED system.

Project description:We study the scattering problem of photon and polariton in a one-dimensional coupled-cavity system. Analytical approximate analysis and numerical simulation show that a photon can stimulate the photon emission from a polariton through polariton-photon collisions. This observation opens the possibility of photon-stimulated transition from insulating to radiative phase in a coupled-cavity QED system. Inversely, we also find that a polariton can be generated by a two-photon Raman scattering process. This paves the way towards single photon storage by the aid of atom-cavity interaction.

Ultrafast excited-state isomerization in phytochrome revealed by femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy.

Project description:Photochemical interconversion between the red-absorbing (P(r)) and the far-red-absorbing (P(fr)) forms of the photosensory protein phytochrome initiates signal transduction in bacteria and higher plants. The P(r)-to-P(fr) transition commences with a rapid Z-to-E photoisomerization at the C(15)=C(16) methine bridge of the bilin prosthetic group. Here, we use femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy to probe the structural changes of the phycocyanobilin chromophore within phytochrome Cph1 on the ultrafast time scale. The enhanced intensity of the C(15)-H hydrogen out-of-plane (HOOP) mode, together with the appearance of red-shifted C=C stretch and N-H in-plane rocking modes within 500 fs, reveal that initial distortion of the C(15)=C(16) bond occurs in the electronically excited I* intermediate. From I*, 85% of the excited population relaxes back to P(r) in 3 ps, whereas the rest goes on to the Lumi-R photoproduct consistent with the 15% photochemical quantum yield. The C(15)-H HOOP and skeletal modes evolve to a Lumi-R-like pattern after 3 ps, thereby indicating that the C(15)=C(16) Z-to-E isomerization occurs on the excited-state surface.

Amplification and generation of ultra-intense twisted laser pulses via stimulated Raman scattering.

Project description:Twisted Laguerre-Gaussian lasers, with orbital angular momentum and characterized by doughnut-shaped intensity profiles, provide a transformative set of tools and research directions in a growing range of fields and applications, from super-resolution microcopy and ultra-fast optical communications to quantum computing and astrophysics. The impact of twisted light is widening as recent numerical calculations provided solutions to long-standing challenges in plasma-based acceleration by allowing for high-gradient positron acceleration. The production of ultra-high-intensity twisted laser pulses could then also have a broad influence on relativistic laser-matter interactions. Here we show theoretically and with ab initio three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations that stimulated Raman backscattering can generate and amplify twisted lasers to petawatt intensities in plasmas. This work may open new research directions in nonlinear optics and high-energy-density science, compact plasma-based accelerators and light sources.

Excited-State Energy Surfaces in Molecules Revealed by Impulsive Stimulated Raman Excitation Profiles.

Project description:Photophysical and photochemical processes are ruled by the interplay between transient vibrational and electronic degrees of freedom, which are ultimately determined by the multidimensional potential energy surfaces (PESs). Differences between ground and excited PESs are encoded in the relative intensities of resonant Raman bands, but they are experimentally challenging to access, requiring measurements at multiple wavelengths under identical conditions. Herein, we perform a two-color impulsive vibrational scattering experiment to launch nuclear wavepacket motions by an impulsive pump and record their coupling with a targeted excited-state potential by resonant Raman processes with a delayed probe, generating in a single measurement background-free vibrational spectra across the entire sample absorption. Building on the interference between the multiple pathways resonant with the excited-state manifold that generate the Raman signal, we show how to experimentally tune their relative phase by varying the probe chirp, decoding nuclear displacements along different normal modes and revealing the multidimensional PESs. Our results are validated against time-dependent density functional theory.
