Review of Neopalpa Povolny, 1998 with description of a new species from California and Baja California, Mexico (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae).

ABSTRACT: The monotypic genus Neopalpa was described in 1998 by Czech entomologist Dalibor Povolný based on two male specimens from Santa Catalina Island, California, which he named Neopalpa neonata. The female of this species was discovered recently based on a DNA barcode match and is described. In addition, a new species with marked differences in morphology and DNA barcodes from southern California and Baja California Mexico is described as Neopalpa donaldtrumpisp. n. Adults and genitalia of both species are illustrated, new diagnosis for the genus Neopalpa is provided, and its position within Gelechiidae is briefly discussed.

Taxonomic study of Thiotricha Meyrick (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) in Japan, with the description of two new species.

Project description:A part of Japanese species of the genus Thiotricha Meyrick, 1886 are reviewed. Three species described by Omelko (1984) in the genus Cnaphostola Meyrick, 1918 are placed in combination with Thiotricha; Thiotricha biformis, T. angustella comb. nov. and T. venustalis comb. nov. These species are redescribed, and two new species, T. elaeocarpiella Kyaw, Yagi & Hirowatari, sp. nov. and T. flavitermina Kyaw, Yagi & Hirowatari, sp. nov. are described based on external morphological characters of adults and genitalia of males and females. Thiotricha chujaensis (Park, 2016), comb. nov. described in Cnaphostola from Korea, is newly recorded in Japan feeding on Mallotus japonica (Euphorbiaceae). One of the new species, T. elaeocarpiella sp. nov. has been associated with two different plants, Elaeocarpus zollingeri (Elaeocarpaceae) and Rhaphiolepis indica (Rosaceae). This paper presents the ﬁrst comprehensive description of the morphology, pupal morphology and biology of species previously treated in the genus Cnaphostola and their relatives in Japan.

DNA barcoding as a screening tool for cryptic diversity: an example from Caryocolum, with description of a new species (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae).

Project description:We explore the potential value of DNA barcode divergence for species delimitation in the genus Caryocolum Gregor & Povolný, 1954 (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae), based on data from 44 European species (including 4 subspecies). Low intraspecific divergence of the DNA barcodes of the mtCOI (cytochrome c oxidase 1) gene and/or distinct barcode gaps to the nearest neighbor support species status for all examined nominal taxa. However, in 8 taxa we observed deep splits with a maximum intraspecific barcode divergence beyond a threshold of 3%, thus indicating possible cryptic diversity. The taxonomy of these taxa has to be re-assessed in the future. We investigated one such deep split in Caryocolum amaurella (Hering, 1924) and found it in congruence with yet unrecognized diagnostic morphological characters and specific host-plants. The integrative species delineation leads to the description of Caryocolum crypticum sp. n. from northern Italy, Switzerland and Greece. The new species and the hitherto intermixed closest relative C. amaurella are described in detail and adults and genitalia of both species are illustrated and a lectotype of C. amaurella is designated; a diagnostic comparison of the closely related C. iranicum Huemer, 1989, is added.

A dwarf walrus from the Miocene of Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Project description:Here, we describe the odobenid Nanodobenus arandai gen. et sp. nov., based on a nearly complete left mandible from the mid to late Miocene Tortugas Formation in Baja California Sur. Nanodobenus is distinguished among odobenids by displaying a unique combination of plesiomorphic and derived characters, such as narrow mandibular symphysis, well-developed genial tuberosity, bilobed canine and p2 roots, bulbous post-canine teeth with the paraconid, protoconid and hypoconid, and smooth lingual cingula. Moreover, it is characterized by its small adult body length, which is estimated at about 1.65 m. Throughout the Miocene-Pliocene odobenids are characterized by an increase in body size, especially after the extinction of desmatophocids in the late Miocene. The small size of Nanodobenus departs from this trend, demonstrating that there was greater size disparity among odobenids in the mid-late Miocene than previously thought. It is hypothesized that Nanodobenus occupied a niche that was later on occupied by similar-sized otariids, such as Thalassoleon mexicanus, which occurs sympatrically with large odobenids in the overlying Almejas Formation.

Characterizing intercampus migration in a private university of Baja California, Mexico.

Project description:Given the socioeconomic and environmental differences between Mexico's geographical regions, having a multi-campus system is common for private and public universities. Hence, students may choose to migrate from one campus to another. Although such a phenomenon is not properly students' desertion, students' migration impacts campus' main indicators: enrollment growth goals, terminal efficiency, accreditation programs, and revenue. Thus, the campus of origin internalizes migration as students' desertion. By considering a campus from a private multi-campus university in Baja California, Mexico, this study characterizes and predicts students' migration and predicts by determining the socioeconomic and academic variables that impact the probability of moving to a different campus. Our database comprises quantitative and qualitative information of 356 dropout students from 2008 to 2018. Hence, we apply the logistic regression technique to build a predictive model; we found that the most significant predictive variables are the GPA results, age, financial support, and academic development. So, our main results characterize migrant students as having top grades, coming from the high school campus, and attending engineering programs. Surprisingly, economic variables are not significant in choosing to migrate from one campus to another.

New species and new records of the genus Scrobipalpa Janse (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) from China.

Project description:An annotated list of 71 species of the genus Scrobipalpa in China is given. Nine species of the genus Scrobipalpa Janse, 1951 are described as new: S.triangulella sp. n. (Gansu, Ningxia, Shaanxi), S.punctulata sp. n. (Henan, Shanxi), S.septentrionalis sp. n. (Heilongjiang, Ningxia), S.zhongweina sp. n. (Ningxia), S.tripunctella sp. n. (Hebei, Ningxia, Shanxi), S.ningxica sp. n. (Ningxia), S.psammophila sp. n. (Ningxia), S.zhengi sp. n. (Inner Mongolia, Ningxia), and S.liui sp. n. (Shanxi). Scrobipalpagorodkovi Bidzilya, 2012 is synonymised with S.subnitens Povolný, 1967. The female of S.flavinerva Bidzilya & Li, 2010 is described for the first time. Two new combinations are proposed: Scrobipalpaperfecta (Povolný, 1996), comb. n., Scrobipalpasuaveolens (Povolný, 1996), comb. n. Twelve species of Scrobipalpa are recorded from China for the first time. Scrobipalpacryptica Povolný, 1996, S.proclivella (Fuchs, 1886) and S.smithi Povolný & Bradley, 1964 are removed from the list of Scrobipalpa of China due to misidentification.

Project description:Information on the three previously described species of Halocoryza Alluaud is updated and a new species for the genus from Isla Carmen, Sea of Cortés, Baja California Sur, México is described. Halocoryza whiteheadianasp. n. was found at UV light on a beach of that island. This species does not fit the profile of the other three species, i.e., living on coralline beach sands, or in the Mangrove intertidal zone. Two alternative possibilities as to why this is so are suggested and a study plan for testing these possibilities is proposed.

Project description:Six new species of Gnorimoschema Busck, 1900 are described: G.pamira sp. nov. (Tadzhikistan), G.brachyptera sp. nov. (Russia: Buryatia), G.altaica sp. nov. (Russia: Altai), G.tabazhok sp. nov. (Russia, Altai, Tuva), G.yakovlevi sp. nov. (Russia: Altai, Buryatia), G.kozlovi sp. nov. (Mongolia). A new synonym is established: G.mikkolai Povolný, 1994 syn. nov. of G.radkevichi Piskunov, 1980. Gnorimoschemamontanum Povolný, 1966, sp. rev., stat. nov. is taken out from synonymy with G.soffneri (Riedl, 1965). An annotated check-list of the genus Gnorimoschema in the Palaearctic region is provided.

Seasonal variability shapes resilience of small-scale fisheries in Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Project description:Small-scale fisheries are an important source of food and livelihoods to coastal communities around the world. Understanding the seasonality of fisheries catch and composition is crucial to fisheries management, particularly in the context of changing environmental and socioeconomic conditions. While seasonal variability directly impacts the lives of fishers, most fisheries studies focus on longer-term change. Here we examine seasonal variability in the small-scale fisheries of Baja California Sur, Mexico based on 13 years of government fisheries data. We investigate how four fisheries indicators with direct relevance to ecological resilience-magnitude and variance of landed fish biomass, taxon richness and the proportion of top-trophic-level taxa in total catch-vary within and among years and at multiple spatial scales. We find that these resilience indicators vary both seasonally and spatially. These results highlight the value of finer-scale monitoring and management, particularly for data-poor fisheries.

Description of two new species of Cossidae (Lepidoptera) from China.

Project description:Two new Cossidaespecies from China's Zhejiang and Sichuan provinces are described. The new species Phragmataecia monikasp. n.and Patoptoformis rimsaitesp. n. superficially resemble related congeners but can be distinguished by differences in wing pattern, genitalia and distribution. Checklists of the genera Phragmataecia and Patoptoformis are presented.
